Compatibility View Settings

Microsoft in their infinite wisdom has decided that Compatibility View is to be treated as Browsing History and therefore cleared on closure of the current Window.  Wonderful stuff!  We deal with lots of sites that are developed for IE7 such as
Banks and Financial organizations etc and this has really become a royal pain in the nether regions for IT staff.  Even though we have applied a GPO, IE does not retain the list of sites.  Therefore we have to explain to users about how to set the
compatibility view, and believe me users do not retain the information.
Anyone else come across this wonderful experience?
Anyone know of a way around this other than using Firefox?

CV (the list of sites) can be configured and deployed via Group Policy (classic templates), or you can do it using GP Preferences.
I've not heard of the "cleared on closure of current window" issue, and I doubt that is due to any infinite wisdom at all, rather, it sound slike a fault in your environment - it certainly doesn't happen in mine.
If it was a common occurrence, I'd be seeing a lot of chatter about it in the GP forum here on TechNet (and there is no such chatter about this topic) (although lots of other chatter about IE settings management there)
As for Enterprise Mode, list management with Enterprise Mode is no better and no worse, when it comes to deploying/applying lists, and managing the local per-user site list vs. a centrally-defined list.

  • How to control IE10's "Compatibility View settings" via Group Policy

    First
of all thanks for taking the time to read this.  I must let you know that I have limited experience with Group Policy so here it goes...
Domain Controllers are 2008 R2 Datacenter and client computers are Win7 Pro with IE10
I need to add several sites to the "Compatibility View settings" in IE10 and have these pushed out via Group Policy.
I followed this to enable the "Use Policy List of Internet Explorer 7 sites:"
    Use
Policy List of Internet Explorer 7 sites
I even added the settings to both User Configuration as well as Computer Configuration.  However the computers on the domain wouldn't show these sites in
IE even after forcing a GP update (gpupdate /force)
Yes I did use top level domain names.
Next I installed the Administrative Templates for Windows Internet Explorer 10 on the DC:
Administrative Templates for Windows Internet Explorer 10
this gave me an Inetres.adm file while I put in the same location as my other .adm files that Group Policy Manager sees (located at C:\Windows\SYSVOL\domain\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\Adm)
I do see a bunch of .ADMX files located at C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions
on the DC.  I also see a lot of .ADML files located at C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\en-US.
Where is my Central Store located that my Group Policy references?  How do I know what location GP is reading from?
Now I installed the Administrative Templates (ADMX) for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 from here:
Administrative Templates (ADMX) for Windows Server 2008 R2 and
    Windows 7
This gave me a "Win7-2008R2-admx.msi" package that I installed.  I took the defaults and extracted contents to:
    C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\Server 2008 Win7\PolicyDefinitions
Are all of these .ADMX files supposed to be placed into my Central Store?
If I mouse-over "Administrative Templates" in Group Policy Manager is says that the policy definitions are retrieved from the local machine.
I then right-clicked on top of "Administrative
Templates" in Group Policy Manager and highlighted Inetres and selected Delete.
While in Add/Remove Templates I click on Add and it defaults to looking for "Policy Templates" and will not let me select and .ADM/.ADML/.ADMX files.
What am I doing wrong here?
How do I know that I'm using the most recent Inetres file?
How do I know which file Group Policy Manager is using to manage the IE settings that are in:
    User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Internet Explorer->Compatibility View->Use Policy List of Internet
    Explorer 7 sites
    or
    Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Internet Explorer->Compatibility View->Use Policy List of
    Internet Explorer 7 sites.
Is there anything else you can suggest?
Many, many thanks in advance for any response

    Hi,
Regarding your question, usually we create a Central Store for Administrative Templates (Both .admx and .adml files), and create a folder that is named PolicyDefinitions in the following location:
\\FQDN\SYSVOL\FQDN\policies. The .adml files on the Windows computer
are stored in a language-specific folder. For example, English (United States) .adml files are stored in a folder that is named "en-US." When you have copied all .admx and .adml files, the PolicyDefinitions folder on the domain controller should contain the
.admx files and one or more folders that contain language-specific .adml files.
Please refer to the following articles. You will get more helpful details about the Central Store for Group Policy Administrative Template files.

Based on your description, I understand you enable the setting “Use Policy List of Internet Explorer 7 sites”. However, didn’t show any sites in IE in client even after forcing a GP update
(gpupdate /force). Please use command “gpresult” in clients to collect the GPOs, and then check whether the GPO contain the setting “Use Policy List of Internet Explorer 7 sites” was applied to clients or wasn’t.
In addition, you also can change the related setting by using registry directly.
Follow the path of the registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Policies->Microsoft->Internet Explorer->BrowserEmulation->PolicyList. (Create registry folders
    manually if not present)
    Right Click
PolicyList ->New->String Value->Enter the name of the website. (Both under ‘Name’ and ‘Data’. For example,
Value name: example.com Value data: example.com)
There is a similar question, please read as a reference.

  • Where is compatibility view settings in Firefox 3.6.17?

Windows I.E. has Compatibility View Settings, where as Firefox 3.6.17 does not.
Many web pages do not view the same in Firefox as they do with I.E. 8 & 9.
The same web page in I.E. is dead on correct, however with Firefox 3.6.17, the same page extends off to the right and out of view unless you do the horizontal scroll.
How can the same web page display completely different, a non-pleasing view in Firefox
Any suggestions besides upgrade to Firefox 4 or use I.E. instead. As I.E. is slow as mud.
    Thanks, Doc

You can do that with an add-on such as [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/2592/ NoSquint] or [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/6965/ Default FullZoom Level].

  • Save Compatibility View Settings in Desktop IE11

    {Surface Pro - Win 8.1 - IE11}
I cannot get IE11 to save domains in compatibility view. In a session I can designate a domain to display in compatibility mode. During the session, everything is fine. When I close the browser and then go in the next day, all the domains that were in the
list are gone. The list is completely blank.
I go through the process again, but after closing out and then loading the browser again they're gone.
Is there a setting I'm missing?
    Thanks,
    Stathy

    Hi,
Did you choose the option Display all website in Compatibility View?
The issue may be caused by any add-ons. So I recommend you run IE with no add-ons
    firstly.
Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (with no add-ons).
If the issue solved, please follow the steps to narrow down which add-on cause the issue.
Start IE>Press Alt to show the menu bar>On the Tools menu, click manage add-ons>under show, click All add-ons>disable half add-ons one time for quick narrow down>restart IE.
If it is not the case, try the following steps.
    1.Delete your browser history.
Start IE>Press Alt to show the menu bar>On the Tools menu, click Internet options>Under Browsing history, click Delete>Select all the check boxes, and then click Delete>restart IE.
    2.Try resetting IE.
Start IE>Press Alt to show the menu bar>On the Tools menu, click Internet options>Advance>Reset>restart IE.

  • Urgent : SSRS reports zoom in option is not working in IE9 compatability view

    Hi,
We have SSRS reports which when viewed in IE 9 compatability view, zoom in option is not working properly.
SSRS report have 4 charts inside a rectangle. when zoom in from 100% to 50% only rectangle shrinkes not the charts.
Please let me know why it is happening and solutions if any?
    Rakesh Jayaram http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rakesh_ramblings/

    Hi Wendy Fu,
Thanks for your support. Below are the steps and screenshots as per your requirement.
/*******************Below are the steps to replicate ************************/
This document explain IE9 compatibility issue with SSRS report (SSRS 2008 R2 and IE9)
    Tools and software used:
Reports are rendered on Share Point 2010 server which uses SSRS 2008 R2.
Reports are accessed using web browser IE9, IE10 ….
    Problem statement:
To work OTHER reports compatibility mode in IE should be ON
To work SSRS reports (mainly zoom) compatibility mode in IE should be OFF
OTHER report is being used by customer and they will start using SSRS reports as well. While using both OTHER reports and SSRS reports customer do not prefer to keep switching between compatibility modes.
    “Browser Mode: IE9”
Steps to reproduce Zoom issue for SSRS report with Compatibility mode is given below:
Step-1: Select Tools menu -> Compatibility View Settings
Below setting is suggested for OTHER users so tick as shown below,
Step-2: On decision center select link and Open the report home page and click the link to open the report.
Step-3: On SSRS reports Change Zoom level from 100% to say 50%. Here all charts are not moved with container frame.
If “Browser Mode: IE8” is set with following steps then this issue does not happen.
Press F12 and from and select IE8 as shown below.
Press F12 again so this will set the mode and then try Zoom option it works fine. However this setting temporary and will remain for the session only.
If compatibility mode is OFF then also this does not happen. Please see image below.

  • What do I need to do to set IE11 to show a specific site in compatibility view?

We have a legacy site which needs to be in the compatibility view settings in IE11 on our Win 7 workstation (and Win 2012 RDS).
On a test machine in a test OU, I have set a new IE group policy which only contains one setting, which is:
    Computer Configuration (Enabled)
    Policies
    Administrative Templates
Policy definitions (ADMX files) retrieved from the central store.
    Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Compatibility View
    Policy
    Setting
    Comment
    List of sites
    *.domain.com
Our domain is functional level 2003, but we have 2012 DCs (mainly) and I generally do Group Policy administration on a Win 7 machine using RSAT.  I mention that in case any of that is the explanation for this result.
On GP results, that IE Compat View policy with the single setting is denied on that machine because it is empty.
    Denied GPOs
    Name
    Link Location
    Reason Denied
Internet Explorer CompatView Config (Computer Only)
       contonso.local/Test/Workstations
    Empty
Clearly the GP is not actually empty - so something essential is missing.  I wonder if I need to import some IE11 settings files (admx?!) somewhere or if I need to do the Group Policy editing on the 2012 DC instead of on the Win 7 RSAT?  I've read
a little about importing admx files, but wouldn't really be sure of how to do it the right way.

    Hi,
Maybe you should first import the IE 11 Administrative Templates file when you modify the settings on Windows 7. For details about how to import these ADMX files.
Administrative Templates for Internet Explorer 11
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40905
    Internet Explorer 11 Administrator Templates
    http://www.grouppolicy.biz/2013/11/internet-explorer-11-administrator-templates/
Since you mentioned you have a Windows Server 2012 DC in your domain, if it is a R2 version, you do not need to import the ADMX file, the Internet Explorer 11 Administrative Template files
    are already installed.
    Hope this helps.

  • View/Resolution/Font is incredibly small resulting in web pages not displaying properly (Facebook) & I can not find internet tools options or compatibility view otions

I've tried different things to adjust this problem on my laptop, but nothing is working. I uninstalled firefox because this was very irritating. I just reinstalled after being away for 2months and the problem still exists. My laptop settings are for normal display and font sizes and everything is normal when I use internet explorer, but when I use firefox...everything shrinks. When I'm on facebook using apps...it gets even smaller and app screens will not display properly. There is no internet options or compatibility view settings on this new firefox that I can find and I'm out of ideas on how to fix this.

    See this: <br />
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Page+Zoom
The Firefox Page Zoom feature does a domain by domain level of saving the users preferred zoom level settings, there is no default Page Zoom level setting in Firefox.
Try the Default FullZoom Level extension: <br />

Or the NoSquint extension: <br />

  • How do I view videos in compatability view?

I am mandated by my school district to watch videos from Region 10. They have to be viewed in in Internet 7 format. Region 10 shows a visual picture about how to do that by going under TOOLS and clicking on COMPATABILITY VIEW SETTINGS, then click on the checkbox DISPLAY ALL WEBSITES IN COMPATIBILITY VIEW. My computers is Windows 7, Internet Explorer 64 bit

Firefox doesn't have a "compatibility view". It doesn't need one like IE does, because Firefox has always been "compatible" with published web standards, unlike IE wasn't for many years.
What problem are you having with viewing those videos? <br />
Are those videos supposed to play with the Windows Media Player? <br />
If so, you need to install the WMP Plugin for Firefox. <br />

  • How to set IE compatibility view programmatically in Browser Helper Object?

Goal: In IE11, I need to set "IE=EmulateIE7" compatibility view for particular websites.
Adding an HTML meta header or a HTTP response header is not an option as we do not control the websites. Configuring IE (Tools > Compatibility View settings...) is not fine-grained enough as it truncates the website URL to the second and top level domains.
My approach is to achieve the same but more fine-grained with the help of a Browser Helper Object (BHO). Is this possible at all?
I created a C# Hello World BHO according to an online sample. It works in IE9. I haven't tested it in IE11 yet. Now I need to add some flesh to the bone. My idea is to register with the appropriate WebBrowser event, check the URL being retrieved, and then
set a WebBrowser property to turn on compatibility view if necessary.
    Is this feasible?
Which WebBrowser event would that be? DownloadBegin or DownloadEnd? Other?
    pure guess: WebBrowser.PutProperty("X-UA-Compatible", "IE=EmulateIE7")?
Any ideas to cut down my trial-and-error space? Thanks a lot!
PS: I (prematurely?) posted this question last night on stackoverflow.com.

The compatibility list is more about developer and user preference and Microsoft tends to not provide API to override preferences.
If the user accepts launching a separate window to render the content in some alternative browser (pretty much like viewing source in Notepad) you can modify the browser emulation registry value before launching your own webbrowser control based application.

  • Wildcards in Compatability View

I have over 100 sites to add to Compatability View settings in IE 11.  I have a few questions regarding this.
    1.  Is there a limit on the number of sites that can be added?
    2.  Is there a way to import a list of sites?  I have to add these sites so many computers.  It would be easier to do it once and then import it on the other computers.
    3.  Can you use wildcards to add a group of sites?
For example:  I need to add several sites using their IP address.  the only thing that will change is the last to octives.
    192.168.x.x.

    Hi,
Until now I don’t found there have limit number and we can’t use the wildcards with compatibility setting. If you want to import a batch sites you can use GPO setting.

  • Compatibility view

in IE8 tools the compatibility view has to be checked for a web page to work how do i find the compatibiiltiy view in firefox 4.0.1 the web sit will not work in firefox . It did not work in IE 8 until i set it to compatibilty view how do i do this in firefox

    Hi,
In this case, you could use GPO to make the "Include updated website lists from Microsoft" option checked... It contains lists of public domains and their default document and browser modes and ModernIE Flash support.
for intranet sites either add the appropriate x-ua value in the head or in the response header.
And use GPO to configure the user setting (Tools>Compatibility View>"Display intranet sites in Compatibility View") and disable user access to change the Intranet zones' settings on the security tab and Compatibility view settings dialog.
You can refer to below link to get more details regarding the compatibility view.

    Hope it helps.
If you still got questions regarding this, feel free to post here.

  • Group Policy not populating Compatibility View List in IE 11

I am currently a domain admin in a large, multi domain controller environment. Our AD was much out of date (2000 mix mode) and we are currently updating it in steps (2003 Native at this point)
At the same time other technicians have started patch testing, moving us from IE10 to IE11. However, there seems to be one major catch so far. Users require access to a website that will only run properly in compatibility mode.  This was true in IE10 and
    is true in IE11.
As such, this website was set as a mandatory compatibility mode page in GPO (Administrative Tempaltes\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Compatibility View\Use Policy List of Internet Explorer 7 sites). This has worked fine for 8, 9, 10 for this site and
    others.
However, it was not showing in compatibility mode in IE 11 it is showing in normal mode and breaks. The policy is applying normally and the list is accurate in rsop.msc. If the site is added to compatibility mode locally inside IE11 it works fine.
Our patch testers are all seeing the same problem. However, I have been unable to establish if it is just this site or others are affected (mostly it's old billing and intranet sites I don't have access to).
I'm not sure what the disconnect is.

    Hi,
There are also more modes. The detailed information is below:
•Via X-UA-compatible meta tag: The webpage developer used a meta tag to specify a legacy document mode.
•compatible HTTP header: The web server has requested a legacy document mode via an HTTP header.
•Via local compatibility view settings: The site was manually added to the Compatibility View settings.
•Via the compatibility view list: The site is on Microsoft's Compatibility View list.
•Via intranet compatibility settings: The "Display intranet sites in Compatibility View" box is checked in the Compatibility View settings.
please remove all website from "Use Policy List of Internet Explorer 7 sites" list.
Remember to run "gpupdate /force" command to apply the new group policy object.
Then open the websites, click F12 key, check their Document mode status.
Based on my test, this is also related with web itself. it will adjust status according to its design.
