Complete system lockup

Hi all,
Having an intermittent issue with my Laptop (It's a dell D630)
I've had Arch running on it for about a week now and just today i've been getting random system crashed. The mouse/keyboard will completely freeze and if audio is playing it will just loop the last second of audio. Im unable to exit to TTY to try and get the system up and running again.
I've looked through dmesg and Xorg log and cannot see anything that would indicate a problem. Here are the logs anyway:
dmesg:

My pleasure.
Im not 100% sure but i believe the caps lock/num lock etc lights just freeze on what ever state they are in right before the crash. I will double check this for you when it happens again.
Great, but you may want to enable the magic Sysrq key stuff I had linked prior to your next freeze.  That way you can use the tool after the freeze.
Can you see anything in my logs that looks out of place?
Nothing jumps out at me.
You might set your machine up to allow you to log in via ssh.  Then, after the crash, see if you can log in via ssh.  If you cannot, then see if you can ping the box.  Response to the ping is handled at a very low level, log in via ssh is a fairly high level.  I am trying to determine if the system is unconscious,  in a coma, brain dead, or muerte. • Total System lockup during live show production (twice)

This may be too specific but here goes. I do my podcast live every Sunday night on Ustream, and every week it runs fine. Last Sunday and this Sunday I had a complete system lock up in the middle of the show. I thought it might be temperature, but I watched it carefully this week and had two cooling mechanisms so I don't think it was that.
I run Camtwist to pipe my desktop and picture in picture from my iSight on my Cinema Display. I run Audio Hijack Pro to pipe the audio to Soundflower from my Heil mic (via a USB interface) and from GarageBand where I'm recording. Feeder is what I'm reading my shownotes from and I've got Safari running to push everything to Ustream. Finally I've got Colloquy running to participate in the live chat. I know, a lot of balls in the air for me AND my Macbook Pro, right?
MBP is running Snow Leopard and is a 2.53GHz core 2 duo with 4GB of RAM, plenty of hard disk available.
After the lockup I rebooted and pulled the console logs right away. So what should I be looking for? I can see right where it died last week (6 minute gap in the logs) and the end of the logs for this week. I don't see anything that says "your system crashed because..."
The audience has been tolerant of my disappearing act but it's gonna get old soon!

Have to point out that you should work hard to be sure all 3rd party apps AND plug-ins are fully Snow Leopard compatible...and yes, that's quite a load for a laptop.
Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
As well, have you done due diligence on the basics.... confirm sufficient free space on the HD; validate disk health via DiskFirst Aid, never install SL from downloaded torrents/betas, etc. Let Spotlight finish indexing; clear out old cache files and outdated/broken/duplicate fonts; find and delete related plists.
And again, be aware that laptops are typically resource constrained - streaming as an example can tax the hardware and software. If you have large demands you might want to consider a desktop system.
Also, the general approach at this time is to ask if you've checked for any problematic fonts (all languages) with Apple's Font Book (look in the Applications folder). Find and remove all duplicates also.
Start there to be sure all fonts that are in play come out with a clean bill of health.
Don't hesisate to perform wholesale deletion of old and/or little used fonts - be skeptical of anything that has come from Office 2008, including those related to an Equation Editor installation.
If issues continue, you may consider walking that portable in to the nearest Apple store and asking for opinions from the staff.
    Good luck in any case.

  • [SOLVED (in kernel 3.8.8)] Random complete system freezes

I have installed Arch Linux on my desktop, however I am getting random complete system freezes when I use either GNOME Shell or KDE 4 when using OpenGL compositing. I have resorted to using Xfce (which uses Xrender for compositing).
Sometimes the system freezes immediately upon login.
Sometimes GNOME Shell says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again." and forces me out.
Sometimes the system works fine for an hour or so before it freezes.
Sometimes the driver appears to have crashed but then recovers (screen goes blank for a second and windows/decorations are redrawn, then works fine until it completely freezes again).
I am using the xf86-video-ati driver with a ATI Radeon HD 3850. I suspect the problem is with the video driver and/or kernel.
    I have tried:
    - Using Alt+SysRq+? keystrokes after adding kernel.syseq=1 to /etc/sysctl.conf (system doesn't respond at all once frozen)
    - Keeping an SSH connection open (SSH client says "host down" once the computer is frozen)
    - Doing a memtest (ran for 11 hours with no problems)
    - Redownloading and reinstalling all packages from a different mirror (no improvement)
    - Disabling KMS (GNOME Shell runs very slow, at wrong resolution, and the resolution settings doesn't give me the option of the correct resolution)
    - Adding radeon.agpmode=-1 to my kernel parmaters (no improvement)
    - Edit: Also I tried installing linux-lts (GDM and GNOME Shell graphics ends up all broken)
I was previously using Fedora 17 with the open source driver without any problems.

  • My Apple G5 using operating system 10.6.8 keeps locking up. I get no warning or error message. I do get some intermittent screen distortion. Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how i get rid of this problem? Complete system re - install? N

My mac keeps locking up it s Power mac G5 Intel using 10.6.8 OS.X. I get no warning or error messages it just locks up and the only way to get it to work again is to depress power button and restart. Its random intermittent and incredibly frustrating. I do get some screen distortion from time to time and wondered whether it may be a graphics card issue or whether it could be solved with a complete system re-install and OS upgrade?

According to everymac.com, your Mac came with Tiger, 10.4.x and can't go any higher than Lion, 10.7.x.
It would have come with gray, machine specific disks. Since there's no reason to install 10.4.x first, and then Snow Leopard over that, just purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard for $20. What you won't get with the retail version of SL is the iLife suite (Garage Band, iDVD, etc.) that were on the original bundled disks, but you can purchase iLife on Amazon pretty cheap, and get newer versions besides.
When you get Snow Leopard, you can boot to the DVD, erase the drive and install everything clean. Hopefully, you issue is only software, and not hardware related.

  • Slow render times with large jpegs - complete system lag

In a project i'm working on I have two large jpegs with a small zoom scaling effect. Going from 100 to 103 percent.
I've noticed that both Adobe Media Encoder and Premiere Pro experience a heavy slow down in render time as soon as the jpegs have to be rendered.
Not only does the render speed almost come to a halt, the complete system lags very heavy, even the mouse cursor won't respond well.
This happens when i have GPU acceleration enabled and when i do a 2 pass H264 encoding.
When I have the GPU acceleration disabled the render goes very smooth, and doesn't seem to slow down...
The jpeg is 4023  x 2677, and 6,97 MB large.
Scaling the jpeg down to about 1920x1080 in Photoshop and put that one in the timeline made the render go a lot faster.
I understand that a large picture takes a bit more time to be rendered, but we're talking about a 10minute render whit the large jpeg file and  a 2 minute render with the jpeg resized.
The total time of the two jpegs in the video is 5 seconds in a 3 minutes video.
So, that made me think that the render times are exponentially long.
In the timeline everything runs really smooth.
Is this considered normal, I can't remember having such big differences in CS5. It's not a major thing, but I wanted to share anyway.
    My system:
    Premiere Pro CC (latest)
    i7 4930K
    32 GB RAM
    2xGTX480
Footage and project on a Raid0 disk
    Previews/Cache on a Raid0 disk
    System and Premiere on SSD
Render to a single 7200 rpm drive.

I had to do a complete system restore on my computer and now I am having issues getting all my music back. It's telling me that my account is in use with a different user but I'm the only user on my computer. When I go to sync it, it wants to delete all my music and ringtones. What should I do? I don't want to loose all my items.

When in recovery mode you can't backup the iPod.
You will have to restore via iTunes. See:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Had to do complete system restore - how can I get my library and apps back?

I recently had to do a complete system restore on my laptop. How can I get my iTunes library back, including apps? I haven't updated my iPod Touch in a while because I don't want everything on it to be erased.
    Thanks!

You restore them from the backups you made before you did a complete system restore.
You do make regular backups, especially before you wipe your system, correct?
haven't updated my iPod Touch in a while because I don't want everything on it to be erased.
You can get everything off your iPod touch

Make backups after you get them loaded.

Have got a Windows Vista basic and had run a a trial version of LR4 on it - just purchased an LR5 without checking out the complete system requirements. Can I get a complete download of LR4 so that the money I've spent is not wasted. I am not interested in upgrading to Windows 7 currently.

There are still retail packs of LR 4 to be found out there - for example, on EBay. It's just important to be careful whether it's a full version, an upgrade, or a student + teacher version. And to be certain it's genuine, and has a serial number which has never been activated before. The serial number that you get with that, should work with any 4.x version of LR, on either MacOS or Windows. And it will almost certainly be heavily discounted compared with the previous price direct from Adobe.
Of course the other way is to upgrade to Windows 7 SP1, which should also be available discounted, and thus eke out the life of an older PC (I personally would not go to Win8 in such a case). Maybe pick up some RAM also, if that's a problem, provided you can do so cheaply (since that will be simply thrown away in due course, when you get a newer PC),
Using LR4 instead of LR5 you do miss out on a few nice features, as well as potentially the Raw support and lens profiles for more recent camera equipment.
LR 4 is obsolete as far as Adobe is concerned. They will not sell a Serial Number for it.

  • Mavericks 10.9.4 complete system freeze on any webpage with Flash

Been running 10.9.4 without problems on this rMBP 15" 2.3GHz, 16GB RAM.  Today it started freezing when I tried to load a flash video from comedy central.  Complete system freeze, cursor stuck, no feedback, hard restart required.  I thought it might be Silverlight at first so I disallowed it in Safari and it seemed to be ok, but after loading another video the system froze again.
It now occurs for all browsers I try, Safari, Firefox, Chrome.  I have now *uninstalled Adobe Flash* via Adobe's uninstaller, and disabled extensions in Safari.  When I go to youtube.com the system freezes completely again.
I have run Disk Utility and at first it reported that repairs were needed.  I tried a Command-R restart but the computer would boot up eventually into a black screen and then I'd hear "To continue in English, press return" but then nothing would happen.  I restarted and tried to go into Safe Mode but it didn't work, read that I needed to disable FileVault for that approach.  I could still boot normally (and still can), so I disabled FileVault and have tried booting into Safe Mode.  It still doesn't work though--sometimes when I restart it just doesn't go into Safe Mode, and sometimes it goes to a black screen.  However, now when I run Disk Utility's Repair Disk, it reports no problems.
I don't know what to do from here except back up to Time Machine and restore from backup.

Thanks for your suggestion Eric.  I tried that and it gave me the recovery volume option.  But when I selected it, after a few seconds the screen went black and stayed there until a voice said "To continue in English, press return".  I'm guessing that it is in recovery mode correctly but there is a problem with the graphics card which leads to the screen shutting down.  I don't know what else I could try except taking this in to an apple bar, but holla if you have any ideas!

  • 10.7.4 update causes system lockup

Hello, I have Mac Pro (2006) with ATI Radeon 5770 (Apple Genuine) and 10.7.4 update causes system lockup.
I installed 10.7.4 update via software update and the update works fine.
But, after a couple of minutes, there are artfacts on display and the system locks up except for a mouse cursor or the display goes blank.
Obiously, ATI 5770 is overheating but on Windows 7, I run FurMark for an hour to see if 5770 is broken or not and no problem found.
So I reinstalled 10.7.4 (combo), reset PRAM & SMC. I found out about SMC error https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3940135?tstart=0 and replaceed AppleSMC.kext from 10.7.3 by using KextHelper but no luck.
I did clean install of 10.7.4 and everything seemed okay but the system locked up during the Setup Assistant.
I restroed the entire system (10.7.3) from Time Machine and am out of ideas. Does anybody have a simular problem?
btw, MP is upgraded to 2 quad core x5355 and to the firmware MP2.1 (2007)

    Update.
I ran Quartz Debug and disabled Quartz Extreme to see what'll happen.
No more system lock-up nor artifacts!
I reported to Apple and hope they're gonna fiz it soon.

  • I recently had to do a complete system restore how do i transfer my itunes library from my iphone back onto my computer

I recently had to do a complete system restore on my computer. How do i transfer the itunes content from my iphone back onto my computer?

    You don't.
The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases.
The iphone is not a backup device.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a  backup copy of your computer. Certainly you did not restore your system without making sure that your backup copy was up to date.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good) then you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases

    Here's the scoop, new friend.....
When you boot into Time Machine you'll get the same OS X Utilities screen as you would if you booted into the Recovery HD. So, from there go into Disk Utilities to erase/format your internal drive. After that's done, back out to the OS X Utilities screen and select the restore option. Just follow the prompts to select the TM back up date you want to restore from and where to restore it to. Pretty straight forward.
