Compression automatically applied to pics when importing??

Hello ~
I have noticed that when comparing the pics directly from the SD card and after importing into iPhoto (5.0.4) that there is a slight quality loss. I am using a digital Rebel on auto mode that automatically saves the picture as a jpeg, which is very clear when viewed off of the card. Does iPhoto also compress the photo during importing? Thank you everyone for your help in advance.

Jason:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto's importing process is just a straight copy. So that should not do any compression or change to the file. I think Chris CA probably hit the nail on the head. View the image at 100% in the iPhoto's separate edit window. iPhoto's thumbnail rendering is not the best so don't rely on it.

  • Lightroom 4 automatically applies presets to all imported pics - How to deactivate that?

    Hello
When I'm importing pics in Lightroom 4 (no matter if RAW or JPEG files) all picture get automatically convertet into B/W and some grain etc. is added - I guess an preset (BW Nr 4) is applied automatically to EVERY pic I'm opening.
How could I solve that problem?

In the <Import Dialog> on the right side in the panel <Apply during Import> make sure that <None> is selected.
If you only see the small Import Dialog you have to expand it to see <Apply during import> by clicking on the small triangle in the bottom left corner of the dialog box.

  • Automatic Play of Song When Importing Using Double Click

In previous versions of iTunes, I was able to double click a mp3 file on my desktop, have it copied into my iTunes library, and play automatically. Now, in iTunes 8, the file copies but does not play automatically. Is there a way to re-enable this feature? It is really frustrating because sometimes when I copy the file into the library, it doesn't get selected and I have to look around for it in order to play it. Thanks!

Your tracks have track numbers I hope? If so clicking on header of the Album column until it reads *Album by Artist* should sort you out...

  • Iphoto 9.6 shows triplicated pics when importing from a NAS drive

    Hi All,
First of all I want to tell you that I am a new mac user coming from PC.
The setup I have is as follows:
    - MacBook PRO 13 Retina with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    - Iphoto 9.6 (910.29) used as a Referenced Library (iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Copy items to Iphoto Library is UNCHECKED)
    - WD My Cloud Mirror 3TB
I want to used Iphotos to acces to my pictures but I don´t want to copy them in to my local HD. When I choose Archive -> Import to the Library and then I select the desire album to import, I got two events:
    1. The first EVENT is called with the original name folder and contains all the pictures.
    2. The second EVENT has a weird name (i.e. d312a08daf7d421a.....). This event has all the pictures again, but triplicated!!!!.
So, in sumary for every album I import, I got each picture quadruplicated (one time in the "proper" event, and there other times in that weird event name).
Am I doing something wrong? Is there any option I should change in the Iphoto?
    Thanks!

    Hi Barney-15E,
Actually it does. It has an app to access the files and manage folder. In the Mac, I don´t use this very much as I can do the same from the finder. But sometimes the NAS is sleeping and the only way of waking it up is using this up. I also use it from the Iphone.
Do you have any tip to solve this issue?
    Thanks!

  • Problems applying metadata to images when importing from device

When importing images from a device into lightroom 2 I have created and selected a metadata template in the information to apply section, but when importing the images to the lightroom library it does not apply the metadata to the images. Can anyone help?

You mean you're importing directly from an USB-attached camera?
If you import from a card reader, do the templates apply?

  • Same shooting, multiple lenses, how to apply the appropriate lens correction when importing ?

    Hello everyone,
    How do you handle this:
For each camera, i have a default preset i'm choosing manualy and applying when importing my raw files into lightroom.
I'd like to also add some default lens correction to those presets.
The problem is that multiples lenses (meaning different corrections) may be applied.
How to apply the correct lens correction for each file, in the batch import ?
    Thanks for your ideas ...
    Aymeric

Update your existing develop presets so that the Lens Corrections are checked (see attached screen shot). Select the develop preset in Import dialog. Lr will automatically apply the appropriate default lens profile to each individual image during import.

  • Automatic directory creation and renaming when importing pictures

    Hello,
I was wondering if what I'm trying to do is possible with iPhoto or anything in Leopard.
When I import pictures, I want to create folders and rename the pictures based on the date. For an example, when I import pictures taken on November 10th, 2007, I want to create folder "2007", then under that folder create "11", then create "20071110", then rename the photos in "20071110_001.jpg" format.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks.

No, actually I did all your posts all the way to the end. How can you tell? because I answered this question
    The goal.
When importing the pictures through my Mac Mini, copy new pictures in the Samba server using the same structure, NOT in my LOCAL Mac Mini.
in my very first reply to you. I did this when I said:
    No.
Was there some part of that that was confusing?
iPhoto will not do this, and, frankly, I know of nothing that will on the Mac. If you're confident with AppleScript you may be able to whip up a Folder Action to do it where you:
    1. Download the pics to a folder in the Finder. Have the attached script read the exif data, rename the files, and then create the required folders on the Samba server and copy the files over. But I have to say that I don't know if you can get a Finder Script to read exif data. I certainly could find nothing in the library. Nor is there anything in the Automator library that I can see. You might like to post on the AppleScript forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=724
where some of the folks over there might be able to help.
    2. Then have an attached script that will automatically import the files into iPhoto. This is relatively straightforward with either Automator or Hazel.

  • Original image automatically altered when importing into iPhoto

When importing photos from a CD into iPhoto (by first saving them to desktop then dragging them in to iPhoto), they are being automatically altered by iPhoto. They appear in their original form on the desktop, but when I drag them into iPhoto, it seems to be doing some auto-enhancing (in this case not for the better). May be missing something simple, but have not had this problem w/ importing photos from a CD before. Any ideas?

iPhoto works best with an sRGB colour profile. From your description of the symptoms you have a different colour profile.
Why is this important? Because the colour profile tells the computer how to display the colours. It tells it, in other words, what this file means by 'red' or 'blue'.
Try attach an sRGB profile to one or two of the pics and import them. See does it help. You can do this using the Tools menu in Preview.

  • When importing raw photos from Nikon D90 aperture seems to automatically adjust exposure darker. why? How can I stop this?

When importing raw photos from Nikon D90 aperture seems to automatically adjust exposure darker. why? How can I stop this?

This is typical of the default NEF RAW conversion of Aperture and the best thing you can do is set up a few presets to apply to all of your RAW images to get a tone curve and colors that is pleasing to you as a default. The in camera JPEGs / embedded JPEGs (that you first see during import) are treated to the Nikon "Picture Control" settings that are set on the camera - the RAW's as interpreted by Aperture are not.
I have written extensively and even have a few downloadable presets on my site - look for NEF...

  • When I rename a paragraph style can I automatically apply it to the paragraphs using the old style?

    I am using RoboHelp 8.
I want to rename a paragraph style from Body to Bodytext (because the new css we have to use uses Bodytext).
When I rename the Body style to Bodytext, all my body text switches to the Normal paragraph style.
Is there no way to automatically apply the Bodytext style to all paragraphs that were using the Body style?
I am trying to avoid having to apply the style to each paragraph individually which would take forever.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Sorry but there isn't an automatic way.
You will need to fix this using a multi-file find and replace tool.
If you look at the HTML you will see something like <p class="body">.
Search for that and replace with <p class="bodytext">
Make sure you create a copy of the project before you start.

  • Compression when importing video

i exported a DV-PAL file from FCP using 'Quicktime Conversion', the file size came out as 4,4 GB. However when importing the file into DSP, the disc capacity meter is at 1.8 GB.
Can one control by how much the file gets compressed during the import process, or does one need to use compressor to create a higher resolution MPEG-2 before?
up until now i have imported Quicktime files into DSP, but the compression is rather big!

When you export a movie from Final Cut, even with codecs such as DV, they are going to be larger than a MPEG-2, since MPEG-2 is compressed format. It will, by definition, have "lower" quality since it is compressed. But that does not mean you cannot get good results.

When importing CDs into i-tunes should the artwork be there automatically.  If not how do I get artwork to show in i-tunes and on my ipod.  I had artwork with a PC but now I have a mac artwork does not appear.

I don't use iTunes's "fetch artwork", so I'm not 100% sure, but unless you are signed in to your iTunes account, artwork is not automatic. Even then, iTunes doesn't always find it.
You can copy-and-paste artwork from the inernet, either Amazon or Google. I use 300x300 pixel images.
For the future, if you have iTunes questions, you might be better off posting them in the iTunes for Mac forum, this is iTunes for Windows. In this situation, it doesn't make any difference, but next time maybe it will.

  • How do i prevent lightroom from automatically applying a star rating to my images during my import?

i have consistently imported images, apply my metadata preset, location(folder).
i then scroll thru my filmstrip and apply star ratings.
suddenly my images are appearing with a one star rating automatically.
    not sure why?

The first place to check is your Metadata Preset you are applying on/just after import. Is it applying the stars?

  • Does AAC Encoder apply when importing or when transfering to iPod?

I have iTunes set to import using AAC Encoder. CD songs in the iTunes libary on my PC are m4a fles, while downloaded mp3 files remain as mp3 files.
Are the mp3 songs converted to AAC when transferred onto my iPod? Or does the AAC Encoder only apply when importing into the libary on my PC, in which case why do mp3 files stay as mp3 files?
Reason for asking is concern that converting from mp3 to AAC reduces sound quality.
    iPod   Other OS   60GB Video

    Graham,
The import setting you select in your iTunes Preferences applies specifically to songs you add directly from a CD.
It does not affect songs that are added to your library that are already mp3's (or any other format for that matter).
    Have a look at: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301509
When you synch the files to your iPod they will remain whatever they are in iTunes - nothing changes in the transfer.
iTunes can convert files (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93123 if you're interested in details on that) but you are right, there is a loss of audio fidelity.
