Compression Rate = Quality...  Rule of Thmb?

Are there any rules of thumb for compression rates and resulting quality? For instance, I've heard 5Mbps is the bottom end for "as good as commercial movie DVDs". I guess measures that describe "quality" are subjective or varied... but terms that are significant to me are things like "Movie DVD's" "Betacam" "VHS" "no perceptable loss, even in motion scenes".
I often need to decide if a client will need one or two disks, based on the proposed amount of footage, before production. I make a rough bit-budget ahead of time. So, if the bit-budget calls for a 4.2 bit rate and that is too ugly for what I think my client needs, then I'll need to go to 2 disks. So, knowing in advance the bit rate -to- quality relationship would be very helpful.
Let's say the constants are:
Decent DV footage, let's say "average" screen action

Not really. A lot comes down to what you see on screen when you try a few test encodes. Higher data rates don't always equate to higher quality - particularly at the upper end of the scale... can you see a difference between 8MBPS and 9.4MBPS, for example?
The fact is that it is only through experience that you get to know what tends to look good for the material you have got... therefore encode lots of things and see how it turns out!
Quite often the client will demand a single disc set, for example. Your experience will tell you that their 4 hour sport video won't look very good and so you have to have that conversation with them. No matter how good the source footage is, when you reduce the bitrate too far to get a file that fits the disc they want the quality will suffer - but you can turn to MPEG1, half D1, etc to help get them to replication, of course.
In general, the middle of the bit rate scale will be a good enough place to start. If you have really clean source footage then a software encoder like Compressor might do the job alright, but a better encoder, such as BitVice, MegaPEG.X, Canopus Procoder will do a better job with the same bit rates. A hardware encoder like the sonic SD2000 might give a different result again, whilst Cinemacraft could be set up to run a multi-pass VBR encode over a period of several days and squeeze every last drop of quality out of the footage.
There are simply too many variables involved, and I'd be sceptical of a 'one size fits all' approach, I'm afraid.
5MBPS for 'as good as commercial DVDs' is nonsense in this context. 5MBPS on really clean betacam source footage run through an SD2000 is a dream compared to 5MBPS on noisy, poorly lit mini-DV put through Compressor... it's unwise to make generalisations, IMO.

  • Zero quality loss compression rates

Hi. This my first post. Thanks to all who have posted so far, very helpful. My goal is to get away from DVD storage for home movies entirely, so I need to compress my .avi files to a reasonable size. I refuse to do so at the expense of quality, however. After a dozen experiments in QT, I determined that from my Sony Handicam, the following settings retained full clarity:
    h.264, 29.97frames/s, 5700kb/s, best quality, 640X480.
The end result for a 54 second clip was an .mp4 file roughly 1/5 of the size of the .avi (188MB down to 38MB). Has anyone achieved a better compression rate without quality loss? I want to ensure the best rate before I set to converting hours of home video. Any suggestions appreciated.

Patrick, thanks so much for your help. You're all really helpful on here!
Exporting in prores still displays artifacts and they show up when I bring it into FCP (regardless of whether I import the clip fresh or have it saved back from a "send").
    Here's what I tried:
importing clip directly into a new motion file (not sent from FCP) - movie displays with artifacting - upon rendering, rendered clip still has issue - imported into FCP - still shows artifacting
by importing the motion clip with artifacts into FCP and display in the timeline, FCP changes it's settings to match the clip as usual - I then tried importing the original source clip directly into FCP and when I move it to the timeline, it also shows identical artifacts. However, if I bring in the original clip first, so FCP changes it's settings to match it, the motion clip still shows compression.
Assuming the problem is with the transcode, is this just an issue with this video format working with motion? If so, I assume this means our video team needs to use a different codec. We're shooting a lot of green screen for HD video - any recommendations for a better codec?
Also, is this an issue that Apple can address with future versions of Motion?
    Thanks again!

  • InfoCube design- partition of chararcters over IC - compression rate etc

    Hello,
prerequiste for aggregation in an IC is that technical key is identical. technical key is formed of all DIM IDs and
those in turn are formed by characters in appropriate dimension. That means all characters of all dimensions form up the
technical key. So I have to organize an appropriate set of characters in an IC to get max. compression rate. That
partitioingn may result in to many InfoCubes if I consider semantic or project aspects. On the other hand aggregates are also
a means for realizing compression. Could you support me with guidelines for that or support me with links for this
    subject.
    Thanks in advance
    Oskar

    Arun,
thanks for your answer but I think I must change my misleading question to get the answer I want to have
    Assumption :
    1) InfoCube A has dimension d1 with characters ch1 and ch2 and dimension d2 has character ch3 and
    ch4.
    2) If ch1 and ch2 and ch3 and ch4 are identical standard aggregation is done ex. sum
Lets say thats what I want to have as aggregation level and which I get If I compress table F to table E
Til now I used an IC with 4 chararcters in 2 dimensions. Now I assume that I have additional 20 characters which
I didn´t organize in Cubes but they are semantical belonging to characters used in InfoCube A. If I pack them in Cube A
may be I destroy that aggregatio level I want to have ( because now all 24 characters must be identical for case of
aggregation ) . But if I organize them in seperate ICs may be I get to much ICs.
How would you solve that modelling ? Would you for example pack all characters into one IC and solve necessary aggregation level with aggregates , because they allow to use a subset of characters in the underlaying cube ?
    Thanks in advance

    Oskar

  • Possible to CONVERT CLIPS in order to match COMPRESSION rates?

I'm working with a sequence that has mismatched compression rates for my source material....
75% of my material is 8-bit uncompressed, that's also my sequence setting....however, I've had to import other material that's not 8-bit and, of course, requires rendering in the sequence...
Any way to convert this new material to 8-bit (or any other compression) that will allow me to use it in my sequence without rendering?
I think I know the answer, hoping that maybe someone out there has found a work-around.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

    Thanks, StudioX....
I was able to convert it to 8-bit using my Compressor.....I don't have QT pro....
Dang thing's taking so long to convert (it's a 90:00 film), that it's almost worth just rendering the clips I'll end up using rather than doing the entire film....
It doesn't usually occur to me that I have to go outside the fcp application to tweek files....
    Thanks again....

  • Lower Compression Rates & Dropped Frames

Frames keep on droppin' and FCE keeps telling me to lower the compression rate (among other things I've already taken care of, so I'm guessing this is the problem). But 1) I have no idea where to do this and 2) I have no idea what to change the rate to.
    Halp?

How do I do what? Copy the material onto another drive? You need another drive. Select all the material on the drive. Drag it to the other drive. To erase and reformat the drive you use Disk Utility. It's on your system hard drive. The first panel will have a tab for erasing.

  • Compression rate advice

I need to export a compressed file from FCP, that runs at just over 1hr, to iDVD via iMOVIE. (I haven't got my head around DVD Studio Pro yet!) What is the advised compression rate for this transfer? I usually use DVD PAL but it's too big and requires a dual-layer disc. I'm sure there is a different, more popular, choice of compression that I can use. The files will need to be able to stand alone and be importable into iMOVIE so that I can create a an iDVD project. Any ideas?

Make a QT Movie, not self contained, then drag the
file into iDVD. You dont need to use iMovie unless
there is something in there you want that FCP doesn't
offer... (Can't think of what that might be though.)
Thansk for replying. Before I do that - will a QT movie recognise chapter markers? I want to break it down in a scene selection menu.

  • Audio compression rate

    Hi,
is there a way to change the audio compression rate on my Ipod? Bass and treble sound very distorted when connected to my home stereo amplifier.
    Many thanks
    acer aspire 3500   Windows XP

Distortion can be caused by several things -
    1) Simply overloading the input to your hi-fi or by a high data compression rate or a combination of the two. Check the input sensitivity rating of the socket you are using for the iPod on your hi-fi is around the 1 volt level (RMS). If is much less than 1V (say 300mV or less), even a lowish volume setting on the iPod could cause distortion, at least in the bass. Input overload from high bass levels can cause clipping distortion that can blow speaker tweeters (not the woofers) and sound terrible. Also, file compression at less than 128kbps causes progressively more disagreeable distortion right across the audio bandwidth.
    2) Downloaded files are sometimes highly compressed (less than 68kbps) and are not worth playing from any half-decent hi-fi. Also, avoid ripping CD's at less than 128kbps if you want to play back through your hi-fi. Preferably, use a bigger bit rate than 128kbps. iTunes material should be fine, at least for the non-audiophile, as it's AAC files are not too highly compressed.
    3) If you use the Sound Enhancer (iTunes preferences) or an iPod Equalizer Preset, you could push the overall output toward overload for the hi-fi input.
    Happy listening.

  • LRT214 - Bandwidth Management Rate Control Rule

I have an LRT214 that is configured with 3 VLANs. VLAN 1 just for management, VLAN 10 for internal devices, VLAN 20 for guest devices. Everytime i try to add Bandwidth Management Rate Control Rules for my VLAN 20 IP Range, the router stops responding within 10 seconds to 5 minutes. If I remove the rules, I am able to keep the network up for days. I have even had someone from Linksys Support remotely login to my computer then the router and remove my rules, then add them just like I had. It stayed up for about 3 minutes and then I lost network connections to all devices and couldnt even login to the router. Once I power cycle the router, i am able to get into the router long enough to remove the rules and then everything functions normally. Is anyone else having issues with Rate Control Rules or are there other steps that need to be done as well?
Just as an FYI, I do have an open case with Linksys but havent heard back from them since Wednesday the 21st. I have tried configuring another LRT214 and even a LRT224, the same issue happens when I add the rules on both of those as well.

QOS does a calculation based on the up\down Maximum bandwidths. Then applies that against the rules you set. It's critical that the values be accurate.
Rate control is like pie slices. Leave enough for the rest of the network.
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

On my system (Windows XP Pro SP2, Premiere CS3) any attempt to use flash

Quicktime colors are washed out and lacks contrast.

  • Photos in iOS 4.2 auto compressed/crap quality

I had this nice wallpaper i made that looks normal on every computer I placed it on and it looked normal under the previous iOS on my iPad when I had it as the wallpaper.
Its a simple grey background with white text and the center letter is Red, but for some reason the red letter looks compressed/low quality compared to the file sitting on my desktop, in iphoto and mail on the ipad.
no matter how many times i try to recreate the image the red letter looks crappy while the rest of the image looks okay but noticeably different/compressed or something.
does anyone know whats the reason for this? or how to change it?
it doesnt make sense, the image looked normal on the iPad prior to the update....

I have confirmed youre issue on my iPad with WiFi+3G using those images in your links.
the red looks completely loss of quality.
However that was with the JPGs but NOT with the PNG files you provided.
BUT not to mention the **** thumbnails in Photos have little grey dots and looke pixelated and bitmap-ish...w t f?!
They look like the color in the photos are some really bad 8-bit color.

RECOVERY RATE의 설정 및 DEFAULT RULE에 대한 설명
    =======================================
    PURPOSE
PO DISTRIBUTION의 RECOVERY RATE를 어떻게 설정하는지를
    기술하고자 한다.
    Explanation
    (1) Recovery Rate의 Setup
Recovery Rate는 Tax Code를 기준으로 Disply된다.
즉, Recovery Rate는 Tax Code를 설정하는 화면에서 지정하도록
    되어 있다.
    (path : Purchasing/Setup/tax/Tax code/recovery rate)
    (path : Inventory/Setup/Organizations/Purchasing Parameter/tax)
Tax Hierarchy는 Item/ship-to location/ supplier/ supplier site level
    별로 우선순위를 설정합니다.
note : 만약, PO Distribution을 생성한 후에, Tax code를 임의로 변경
한 경우, 관련된 Recovery Rate는 새로운 Tax Code에 의해 재설정
    되지 않습니다.
    (2) Recovery Rate의 자동 지정
Recovery Rate는 다음의 경우에만 자동 Display된다.
<1> tax code is not null.
(TAX will be displayed by tax defaulting rule)
<2> when you move the cursor to Charge account field in
    distributions window,
recovery rate can be displayed automatically.
<3> if you save the po form before distributions window open,
recovery rate can be inserted in distributions window
    automatically.
    (3) recovery rate가 Null일 경우 Check사항
case1. Setup of recovery rate is invalid.
==> you have to check the setup.
case2. when you change the tax code from old PO, recovery rate can
    not be updated automatically.
==> this is a standard process.
case3. Tax Recovery rate not defaulting for onetime items(without
    item code)
    ==> this is a bug.
    so we needs a one-off patch#1907369 (based on 11.5.4)

  • Best compression rate - help   - i'm still green

Help. Can any give me an estimate for what would be a good encoding rate for a footage with a lot of movement but yet only 6 minutes.
    Thanks

Is it only the portions that have been transcoded from DVD that are strobing? You have to figure that since your source DVD has been compressed to fit onto the original DVD, and the fact that DV video is already compressed 5-1, and then you are compressing it again to fit on your own DVD, there are going to be issues.
If it was me, I'd find out if I could get hold of the original tapes and recapture. Or, failing that, get hold of the original edited files. Any way you can cut out some of these compressions will only help your cause.
How did you 'pull the video' from your client's DVD? What software did you use? Every time I've done this, the result has been less than stellar. But I didn't have any strobing. This is perhaps because the DVDs I've taken footage from were generated from those DVD camcorders and bypassed some of that compression.
I do an awful lot of videos authored to DVD, which include elements from everywhere under the sun. I get digital stills, consumer MiniDV tapes, camcorder-generated DVDs, scanned photos and professionally-done MiniDV footage. And it's usually of people playing sports. Plus I add transitions like classic dissolves and such. After many tests on my system, I've come to a few conclusions:
Number one—CBR 6.7 (in DVDSP) gives me the best overall result for achieving decent motion AND decent dissolves. 2-pass schemes end up giving my dissolves a ratty look and end up making the whole video look cheesey. If you're not happy with that in your own tests, try upping the bitrate some, but I'm convinced that CBR is best for my needs 99% of the time.
Number two—I only use Maxell-R or RiData-R DVDs.
Number three—When it really counts, I burn my DVDs from a disk image in Toast as Data and on the UDF setting. And I burn it at 4x speed.
Others may debate me on a few of these, but these are the conclusions I've come to on my system, with my software. I generate hundreds of DVDs at a time and are played on every system imaginable. I rarely get one back as 'unplayable.' In fact, It's only happened once in the past year. And in that one case, it had been burned at 12x speed. Once I replaced it with the same file burned at 4x, it played fine.
Also, you read a lot of folks talking about only doing your encoding to MPEG2 through Compressor. I don't notice enough quality difference to justify the outrageous amount of time Compressor takes to encode an MPEG2 file. And, in some of my tests, DVDSP did a BETTER job.
I create the audio file in Compressor (AAC), and then replace the AIFF audio file DVDSP creates with it before dragging the audio and video into DVDSP's Graphical Menu.
I hope some of this helps you. I've learned these lessons through an awful lot of "stomach pain." I've read a lot of advice in this forum and tested it on my own system on my own projects. Your results, as they say, may vary.
