Computer backup

I am running vista and I can't get my printer to work. Someone suggested that I backup everything on my computer and then reboot it. I didn't get an installation disc when I bought my computer. If I back up everything can I get my system back to how it was? Also how many discs would I need? Or is there something better that I could use? Thanks.

  • Can I do a duplicate search to delete on my ipod classic 120gb only?  There are no duplicates on my itunes... I think these duplicates arose when I did a restore, and had to reload from the cloud, and my computer backup.... please help...

I have an ipod classic 120gb...
Somehow I have managed to get mutiple duplicates.....
I had a computer crash... and I restore several songs from the cloud, and from my computer backup from an external drive...
and also, from past purchases on itunes...... some songs I had loaded from my own cd collection....and songs had overlapped......
I knew I had duplicates before the crash and never took care of it.... but now of course there are more...
I have taken care of the duplicates in itunes, by deleting them one by one..... I made the mistake of checking boxes then highlighting and doing a mass delete... thinking it would only delete my check boxes.... and loss a lot of music... so had to restore backups again....
    so.......
Ipod......... how do I delete duplicates from the ipod, without loosing music from my ipod... I have lost music that is still there I believe on the Ipod that is not on my itunes... but I am not sure...and I can not find a search duplicates in itunes for Ipod....  can anyone help me on this... is there a way to do it, without going through 8 days of music line by line??
    Thank you

Restore the iPod and reload it from the library... Ah, but there might be media on the device that isn't in the library yes?
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device and a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates from iTunes if you end up needing to do a blanket recovery from the iPod. See this  thread for background on DeDuper.

  • Slow Dashboard Load and Computer Backup Information

I am using Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials that I am trying out with the trial evaluation.  I have a couple of questions and observations that I do not know why they are happening:
Xeon E3-1230V3 3.3 GHz, 16 gig ram, Intel DC3500 120 Gig SSD boot and system disk
    1.  When I click the dashboard icon it takes from 2 minutes 30 seconds - 3 minutes and 30 seconds from when the dashboard appears on the screen to when the menus appear on the dash board and the cursor changes from the hourglass.  On my SBS 2011
Essentials it takes 16 seconds from icon click to ready to go.
    2.  When I go to the user tab on the dashboard there are no users shown, even the administrator, although I have added users.  SBS 2011E shows all users correctly.
    3.  On the computer backup tab one of the computers shows the backups but one computer, I know has had successful backup, does not show any backups when double clicked. SBS 2011E shows everything correctly.
    4.  When selecting a computer that was backed up there is nothing in the lower half of the screen for the computer description i.e. name, OS etc.  On the SBS 2011E everything shows correctly.
I don't think that this is normal functionality but does anyone have an idea on what may be happening or how to correct these problems.
    Thanks in advance,
    Greg

Any errors in the event logs?
It does not sound normal particularly, but i don't think the dashboard is particularly speedy anyway.

  • HT201269 I lost my ICloud calendar  but I do have a recent iPad back up on my computer will my calendar restore form my computer backup?

I lost my iCloud calendar  but I do have a recent iPad back up on my computer will my calendar restore form my computer backup to my iPad mini and then can I get that info on my iPhone 6?

Not if you carefully follow the procedure outlined in this user tip from wjosten: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive.  If you're using iTunes 11 you'll want to first go to iTunes>View>Show Sidebar in order to follow this guide.
Edit: Sorry, didn't notice that you were restoring from the backup of an older phone.  Before doing so, connect your phone to your computer without syncing and import your photos, as outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083, to avoid losing them when you restore to this backup.  You will lose the app data from your current phone when you restore to the older backup.

  • Retrieving contacts directly from computer backup

My wife's IPhone4 was stolen but she has an ITunes backup. Is there anyway to access the contacts, photos and videos directly from the computer backup?
I also have an iphone4 so at the moment, I was thinking that I could backup my phone, then connect it to her computer and copy the backup of her phone on  to mine. Then extract everything we need and then reinstall my original backup back onto my phone. I assume that this is possible but is there an easier way?
    Thanks in advance...

  • Is there any way to move a file or something from one computer to another that will let the new computer backup my iphone over wifi? I don't want to have to sync my phone to the new computer (my sons computer).

    Hi,
I have my iphone 3GS setup to be able to backup and sync with my computer over wifi. But I want to be able to backup to my sons computer also.
The things is I don't want to have to sync to his computer first to do this. Is there a file or something I can move from my computer that is setup to his that would let his see my iphone over wifi?

If you don't have access to the old computer any longer, '''no'''. Unless you were using something like the Google Toolbar & Google Bookmarks or Xmarks, which would have your bookmarks in an online account that you could access. Firefox doesn't include an online storage feature for personal data, yet. That is coming in a future version.
If you have a friend at your old job maybe they have access to that old PC and they could export your bookmarks to a file and email that file to you.

  • I cant seem to restore my iphone from my computer backup i did lastnight?

it only gives me the option to back up, not to restore, but on my screen is displayed: Latest backup: yesterday 19:36 to this computer. Help?

The ipod is not a storage/backup device.  The sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
Have you failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer?

  • Backing up ipad/iphone to new computer.  Have old computer backup files.

I have a new computer and want to backup my ipad and iphone to the new computer without losing data and settings.  I have complete backup files from the old computer including the previous ipad and iphone syncs.  I have set up itunes on the new computer and transferred over my music.  Can I transfer over the mobile device backup files to the new computer so the sync on the new computer is as if I am to syncing to the old computer?

    Thanks for the info.
I have 2 files from from old computer (one for iphone and one for ipad) from the folder callled:  users\xxx\appdata\roaming\applecomputer\roaming\mobilesync\backup\.  If I just copy those over to the new computer and put them in the same subdirectory will the ipad/iphone recognize these when I try to sync?
I also have the old itunes subfolder called Mobile Applications and am wondering if I just copy that over to the new itunes subfolder called itunes\media whether it will automatically be recognized?  Note: I am able to access the backup but unable to do anything in itunes in the old computer (such as consolidating or merging files)
Are these all of the files associated with the ipad/ipod backup that would have been stored on the old computer?

  • Time machine Deleted old computer backups

    Hey,
I have been using a mac pro for about a year and a half now and as all computers get it has become slow and full of garbage. So i used my time machine back up and successfully backed up all my files. I put in the OS disk and wiped the computer clean and reinstalled the OS. I plugged the time machine back up in and began to copy over only the files that i wanted. A few days later I had not yet copied over all of the files that I needed, i was prompted me to set up this computer with a time machine back up. I began the process thinking that it would create the backups in a new file on the drive or append it to the current list of back up images. It stopped half way though saying there was not enough free disk space. on the 1 TB HD there was only 5 GB remaining. So I just canceled it and was going to finish copying over all of the files i wanted and they delete the old backups. However when I went to get my old backup files, they had all been deleted.
I was using this hard drive to store other media files as well as time machine backups. taking the HD into the local computer shop i was informed that that is a terrible thing to do and perhaps the reason that my backups have been lost. the tech said there was nothing to be done but reformat the drive and start again. I am hoping this is not the case. the drive still says there is only 5GB of free space however I can only fine 300GB of files on the drive. so i believe that the files are still there. Does anyone know a solution to this issue. There are many valuable things on this hard drive that i would hate to loose.
I have tried holding the option key and clicking on the icon to view other backups, but my original backups are not there.
    Thanks in advance.

Before I make any reply, note that you are responding to a topic that has been inactive for more than two years, on a system two versions out of date. In the future, you would do better to start your own topic in an appropriate forum, specifying what system you're running and what hardware you're running it on, among other things.
this exact thing happened to me as well and I must say that I find it totally unacceptable...
Well, without more information, it's impossible to say what might have happened or how you can recover. You may find some answers on Pondini's excellent site:
    http://pondini.org
However, it's important to understand that this may or may not have anything to do with Time Machine. Perhaps your backup drive is dying, perhaps its directory structure became badly corrupt, perhaps one of any number of other things could have happened. Because there is no such thing as storage that is completely stable, it's important to keep more than one backup, as noted previously on this topic.
Carbon Copy Cloner seems like a much better solution at this time.
Carbon Copy Cloner is an excellent solution. Is it better? No. It is simply different, and that makes it better in some aspects and worse in others than Time Machine. The best backup strategy will involve two different backup programs. I frequently recommend using both Time Machine and CCC. I use TM with a Time Capsule for one backup, which has certain advantages over CCC. I use CCC for a couple other backups, one of which is in a safe deposit box at all times, and that has some advantages over TM. Using both, with multiple backups, means that I'm extremely unlikely to lose much data, if any at all... unless a meteor hits and destroys both my home and my bank, in which case I've got bigger problems!
Anyway, with regard to recovery, take a look at Pondini's site. If that doesn't help, or you need assistance with something, start your own topic in the appropriate forum for your system and provide additional details that may help us better assist you.

  • Trying to restore from computer backup...says its not saved???

    Hello
I went to the genius bar to have a problem solved. It was suggested I back up (which I did to my computer) restore back to factory setting (which I did)
and then hook up to iTunes and choose restore from back up (and choose the back up I want from the drop down menu)
I did all of this, it started to restore then about 6 minutes in, it stopped saying it was unable to back up as it was no saved to the computer.
This makes no sense since I it says right in iTunes when it was last backed up.
    Ideas...
    suggestions...
I am leaving tomorrow for a month long trip out of the Country and you bet your patootie I would like my phone with all of my stuff on it.
    Special thanks in advance.
    iPhone 4S 16GB
    iOS 7.1.2

He tried to disable the encrypted backup, which prompted you for the password. The password failed.
He went ahead with the backup regardless, which has the password set to it.
You restored from encrypted backup, it was again not the correct password.
He lied to get you out of the store.
End of the day nothing can be done without that password. It is NOT an appleID password, it is a unique password that you would have entered in on iTunes most likely when you got the phone and started ticking random boxes in iTunes. Try every known password combination you have. If that fails, even 3rd party tools cant access encrypted backups so you'd have to start from scratch.

  • External Storage Solutions (but not computer backups)

There are many articles about external hard drives for backups, but what about as a source to store home videos and pictures? For example, I have a MacBook Air 128GB that can’t store much. My backup drive is a Time Capsule 2TB. After extensive research it turns out the using the TC as a backup (using Time Machine) AND as extra storage is not recommended (problems with partitions). As such the 2TB is an overkill for the 128GB "McAir."
So how do I find a 2 identical hard drives of say 1TB each to store home videos (HD) and thousands of pictures? These files do not fit on the notebook so therefore do not get backed up with Time Machine. Currently I have files in a windows laptop, USB flash, Camcorder flash, etc that need proper storage.
I would use 2 so that the second one is a backup of the 1st. What is the best way to go about it? Thanks.

There are plenty of different solutions..
Generally a true NAS.. ie one that has mirrored drives and real backup is the way to go..
Look at Synology two drive NAS.. they are not cheap but the files are stored and you can setup automated backup.
A media computer is also a reasonable solution.. I don't know where you are but the micro HP servers are now hugely popular here.. they are cheap and take 4 drives. You can load it with several different OS from Linux or FreeNAS to full windows or some media distribution.
A Mac Mini can also do this kind of service but you need to use FW (much better than USB) hard disk on it. Use it as a media computer and file store.
Apple seem to be heading cloud.. (where their head is).. but for most people, our internet speeds are not such that loading media into cloud storage is viable.. great for backup.. not so great for anybody outside of high speed fibre service.

  • New iPhone, no computer backup but iCloud

I just got a new iphone and didn't have a computer back up, it was synced to icloud.  Now I can't get my data off iCloud because it is a synced device.  What do I do to get my stuff back?

Back up your old phone to iCloud, then restore your new phone from the backup:
