Computer Changed Name By Itself

When I woke my Imac from sleep there was a window saying something about this name is already in use and I need to use "computer name" -2. I have read some post on this talking about having windows computers on the network, I don't have any windows computers on my network. I do have XP running in Parallels on my computer but have had it now for a few months. I had a look at the console log and it look like this happened at 1:30 in the morning. My computer was asleep not logged out but asleep. Here is a copy of the console log if anyone can be of help reading
and translating. I was concerned about this happening at 1:30 in the morning. It may be coincidence but I downloaded and installed and cloned my hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner earlier that evening. I did not leave the drive external backup on also I have a time machine back up on another external that is not left on.

  • Changing Name of Computer in Finder

This is a general question.  I just purchased a new Macbook Air and set it up.  In Finder where my name should be it says "macowner".
Is there any way to change that?

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • Change computer's name?

At the very top of the tree I have my computer's name, I seem to remember during the setup process that the name I typed (for something) would be set forever, I think it could be this as I find no way to change it.
Is the computer's name set in stone and if not how do I change it please.

The Computer Name can be be changed in System Preferences >> Sharing >> Computer Name

  • How do I change my computer's name?

Right now my computer's name is my first and last name and then 15" G4 powerbook. How do I go about changing the name(if I can). Because when I am in a wireless network I find the name a bit too revealing of my identity. Thanks.

    Hi Sepehr --
Here's everything you need to know: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh632.html
Short answer: Go to System Preferences (click the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of your screen) > click on the "Sharing" preference pane and just type in whatever name you wish in the space provided.

  • How to change computer network name?

We're swapping 2 computers in our office. How would I change their network names to represent their new user/location? As well as changing the computer's user account?
The way our current setup is that each room has a name, and the room name is the computer network name as well as the user account name.

you mean the computer name is like "iMac-24inch-at-room-1.local" when you browse the networks ?
If so, Just change it in System Preferences->Sharing.
or the wireless SSID, eg. Airport connected to "Room 1" ?
if this is the case, just select the new room BS and set that in Airport Pref network.

  • How to make a Java app compute an MD5sum of itself

I am trying to write an open-source online Java game which will feature, among other things, an online economy system. The problem with this is security: I need a way to verify that the client app accessing the server has not been modified in any way. The client will be available as both an applet and as a standard Java application, making this somewhat more difficult.
My current plan is this: when the client connects to my server, it will download a heavily-obfuscated JAR file (the security module of the program does not need to be open-source), and that JAR file will tell the client to compute an MD5sum of itself, as well as gathering a bunch of other data and heavily encrypting it, and it will send this data back to the server. Unfortunately, I do not know how to accomplish either the loading of the classes in the downloaded JAR or the making the program take an MD5sum of itself. I cannot have the program take an MD5sum of the JAR file on disk, because its name may have been changed, and it would not work for the applet version. Somehow I would have to compute a checksum of the code stored in memory, and send that. Is this even possible? Or is there a better, less convoluted way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

You need to read the [Signed JAR file specification|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/jar/jar.html#Signed%20JAR%20File]. The .class files are digested. The digests are listed in a supplement to the manifest. The manifest is signed with a certificate. All that has to be reproducible at the recipient otherwise the JAR is corrupt. It can only be reproduced if the bytecodes agree with the digests and the signature of the digests agrees with the signature in the manifest, in other words essentially if the JAR is signed. And if it is signed by your certificate, it is your JAR file. Otherwise it is either corrupt or somebody else's JAR file. And only you can sign with your certificate because it is done with your private key, which is, well, private. Now it makes sense, thanks. But there's still one piece missing: how do you tell the server that you're running the signed version of the app? And how does the server know that the client is telling the truth?

  • Icon wont change name-how do i fix?

i partitioned my HD with bootcamp, installed XP........now i want to rename "untitled" to XP HD
normally when i click on the text under the XP i can rename it...but now thats not working
Why? and how can i fix it?.............is it because i am showing statistics under the Icon (10.69GB)

i called Apple and found out what the problem was,I am posting THIS incase anyone else has the problem
The Icon that would not change names was the bootcamp Icon which now has a version of Windows Xp in it.
I installed Xp in NTFS format, had i done it in FAT i could have changed the icons name ,If i had changed it PRIOR to installing XP i could have changed the name
How i ended up changing it was i had to boot into Windows
then click into My Computer-->Properties--> and change the name inside the properties box from Local C: to XP HD............when i booted back to OS10 it automatically updated itself
I also had to connect a Windows Mouse to my use to Right click into Properties on my computer.

  • How to change name on Home folder?

I have an Apple iBook PPC G4 1.33 GHz running Leopard OS X version 10.5.8 and with 1 GB Memory. I just purchased this machine, which is in excellent condition, but I have a problem. It is not earthshattering and doesn't threaten the life of the machine in any way, but it is my machine and I would like the Home directory to reflect that.
The name in the System Preferences for Administrator is "gdavies", which is myself, but the Home Folder in the Finder sidebar is named "macuser". I went in as root user and came close to complete disaster, but got out in time. Having me named as administrator in Accounts but not on the Home directory is unusual. If both were called "macuser" I believe I could fix it, but this requires a greater level of expertise than I have.
Any ideas how to make home folder read "gdavies"? I just bought this iBook and it came with the Home folder named as "macuser". I changed the computer's name in "Sharing" in system prefs and I believe I may have changed the name in the Accounts. I know I should not have done it that way, but it doesn't help changing it back.
When I open the Users folder in the Mac HD there are there folders, one called "gdavies" with 10 items, most empty, such as desktop, downloads and so on, though dropbox is there.
The next folder is the house icon for the Home directory named "macuser" with 38 items and is the working folder. Then there is a folder called "shared", which contains no items.
How do I change the Home directory name in the Finder window sidebar to "gdavies'?

Kappy, you are indeed working overtime to help me and I just want you to know how appreciative I am.
Now, I shall take your answer step by step.
    1. Log into Accounts using the admin password for "macuser". That password and the "other" admin password for gadvies is one and the same. However, done.
    2. Click on Login Options, done - verify gdavies has admin status - done - answer "yes, gadvies has admin status".
    3. Turn off Auto login - done.
    4. Logged out then logged into "gdavies".
    5. Returned to Accounts pane authenticating with "gdavies" password - done. But remember that the admin password is one and the same for "macuser" and "gdavies". Now, I did *not* set it up like that. It just seemed to happen. do I :- )  or do I :- (    ???
    6. Select "macuser" account and using Login options delete. Select the option to remove completely.
I am sorry Kappy, but this pesky "macuser" sits in the home directory without any account in Accounts. So there is no "macuser" account to delete.
I went through all the motions and I was sort of hoping that a "macuser" account would *appear* in the Accounts pane beneath the Guest account so that I could delete it, but no such luck. You know, sometimes things like that do happen.
Thanks a heap for the try, Kappy, I do appreciate you exercising on my behalf "those little grey cells" as Hercule Poirot would say - my favorite Private Eye (Agatha Christie).
    Cheers, Gareth

    what are the implications
None unless its name is used as part of establishing a file sharing connection.
    how to solve it?

  • First time setup - how to change name...

Here's the deal. I bought my brother in law Macbook Pro and when I bought it the feller in the shop helpfully helped me set it up. At the time I did not know my brother in laws apple ID so I used mine. I used my name too. Now - I worked out hot to register it again with his Apple ID.. BUT he still gets my name popping up from time to time. For example when he makes a movie or slide show he tells me that the slide show or movie tells him that I made it - not him...how to change this name?

Make sure you have changed the name under the Accounts Preference pane in System Preferences. Without deleting the account and recreating it or using some command line fancy footwork, you can't completely change over the name, since your folders will still be under the old name because they were created that way, but you can change the log on name and such from there. Also, make sure until Sharing, you have changed the computer's name if that bugs you too.
