Computer continuously wakes from sleep mode

I have a late 2007 MBP, and it won't stay in sleep mode.  It continually wakes whether it's open or shut and "sleeping."  Is there a setting I can change?

Hi c,
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > and uncheck the "Wake" and "Start up" boxes if they're checked. You can also try an SMC Reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Helix 20CG won't wake from sleep mode

    Hi
After doing all updates (windows/lenovo) and ensuring latest lenovo power managers are installed, my Helix 20CG will still not wake from sleep mode. This problem has been persistant since the second day I had the computer.
If the Helix is in sleep mode for more than 2 hours and you press the power button, the screen will not turn on. However if the tablet is docked on the ultrabook keyboard the green light on the Fn key will briefly flicker. Also if you press the power button and then immediately hit the windows button on the bottom of the tablet it will vibrate a bit, but in both cases the screen does not turn on.
After continuously hitting the power button for ~5-10 minutes the screen will eventually turn on.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Thanks,
    Brandon

For the past week, I've been using the Helix and just shutting it down every time I walk away from it. This morning I put it in sleep mode walked away for an hour or so and when I went to wake it up, by pressing the power button, the green light on the Fn key flashed but it would not wake up. I held the power button down for 4 seconds to do a hard reboot. I checked the system log, and when the computer was "asleep" the following warnings were recorded:

  • Compter won't wake from sleep mode

My Pavilion 17 notebook computer, purchased in Oct. '13, won't wake from sleep mode; I must shut down and reboot each time.  I know this is not due to Windows 8, as I have another Win 8 computer that works normally.

I've done some more experimentation and found a workaround. I had Sleep and the Screensaver both set to Never, and by activating the Screensaver the wake up issue has gone away. This doesn't change the fact that there is an issue with my ATV sleeping when it shouldn't and failing to wake up, but having the screensaver active stops it sleeping in the first place I guess.
It's slightly annoying because I like to have music playing with the description and album art running, and this disappears when the screensaver comes on, but it is better than unplugging the thing every time I use it. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next update, because it only appeared in the last one.

  • IPhone 1.1.4 will not wake from sleep mode

    Hi all,
I have an iPhone with 1.1.4 firmware. The problem that I have is that the phone will not wake from sleep mode by pressing the "home" button. I have to press both the "home" and "sleep/power" buttons and hold them for 6 seconds for the phone to restart. I did restore the phone twice - did not solve the problem. Then, one day, I left it charging for about 3 days and when I came back it started working fine. Not for long though( After about a week of normal usage the wake up problem came back. I don't know what to do. I don't think it's the software problem, since I did complete restoration 2 times.
If the phone is connected to a charger or computer - it wakes up fine.
    Thanks, Gene K

    rimini,
When you've restored the iPhone, have you tried setting it up as a new phone? This would truly eliminate software as a possibility.
If setting it up as a new phone doesn't correct the issue, it's probably time for service: apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/
    Hope this helps,

  • PowerBook won't wake from sleep mode

My PowerBook G4 won't wake from sleep mode. I open the lid and nothing happens. I hold down the power button and nothing happens. I resetted the PMU and it will wake up and I am able to login and then it goes back to sleep mode. What should I do please help? And if my computer is dead, is there any way to retrieve my information saved on the hard drive?

this would happen to me when my battery was dead. you test the battery life? (little button on bottom near battery)
I'd make sure it was plugged in and let it charge for 10 minutes or so. then try restarting it if it doesnt wake up by itself.

  • Battery wakes from sleep mode

I have a user who's laptop wakes from sleep mode while the laptop is closed. We changed the battery, checked all settings for sleep mode (wake on LAN, etc) and it still wakes up while the lid is closed. Also, the laptop gets really hot on the left-hand side by the fans, below the screen.
Any other suggestions of what it could be? I'm not sure where else to go.
    Thanks!

    Hi again, itjedi
I did some research and found that there are some driver updates available for the machine that may be of some assistance. I would definitely make sure the BIOS gets updated, but the others may help as well. All of them can be found here, and the results can be filtered by OS and device type if you'd like.
Best of luck. Let me know how it goes

  • Ibook won't wake from sleep mode

I have an ibook G4. I have a slid show for a screen saver, and the display is set to sleep when the computer is inactive for 15 minutes. Recently the computer does not wake from sleep. It is stuck on a screen saver picture, and does not wake up when i press a key. The only way to access the computer is to shut it down by pressing the Start button.
I have tried to remove the slide show, but no difference.

I would suggest resetting the PMU. Since the PMU has control over sleeping and waking, resetting it may help.
Every time you have to do a forced shutdown (by pushing the start button) instead of a normal one, there is a chance of hard drive damage and you should repair the hard drive, either by booting into Safe Mode or starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key at the end of the startup chime. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or Utilities > Disk Utility (in Tiger) and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive. Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on your hard drive.
For future reference, you may want to try posting in the iBook G4 Forum with questions.

  • Snow Leopard won't always wake from sleep mode

Most of the time the system functions fine, but at least once a week, I cannot wake it from sleep mode using the mouse, space bar, or keys. I have to do a hard reboot, which I don't like doing. Are there settings I can adjust properly (Energy Saver or Computer Sleep time or Display time) to stop this from happening? Should it take a few seconds after I hit the space bar?
Or should I just shut it down at night or for periods of several hours?
Is there anything wrong with never letting it sleep? Thanks!

Interesting how a common thread I see on these failures is 4GB ram upgrades. I too have a 4GB aftermarket RAM kit in my late 07 black MB. No issues with this machine, having this exact hardware / RAM configuration for 1+ years. My problems started about the time I ran the 10.5.6 upgrade, which may or may not have included a firmware update.
I would be inclined to think memory timing issues or undervolting the RAM during sleep which causes it to corrupt. Perhaps the OEM RAM modules are looking for different timings / voltage than Apple provided RAM modules.
All said, I am VERY confident this is not a hardware defect but instead firmware related. It doesn't appear to be OS related as none of these failures are making it into the console logs - the machine is asleep, deeeeep sleep. For all intents when it starts it is as if it lost complete power and starts from hibernation file (or starts from scratch if you didn't have a hibernation file...

  • IMac occasionally fails to wake from sleep mode

This is a transient problem. Happens every 2-3 days that computer fails to wake up from sleep mode. Space bar doesn't do anything and I finally have to unplug it and reboot. I have a late 2008 iMac and am running Lion. It has started doing this after I installed Lion but doesn't seem to be related.

It's tough to troubleshoot intermittent problems. You can try by restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt.

  • Powerbook Ti will occasionally not wake from sleep mode

When I put my powerbook in sleep mode, either it will wake, or it will wake but the screen will be blank. The HD will have turned on, the pulsating light will have turned off, and you can hear the fan running. I'll then have to force shutdown and restart.
    So far I have tried:
    1. sleeping via the powerbutton and choosing sleep to see if that changes anything
    2. to plug in a peripheral via USB
    3. to wait it out to see if the screen appears
    4. to reset the PMU underneath the keyboard
    5. to check to see if my ram was bad
    6. to repair disk permissions
    7. to repair file systems via fsck -f in terminal
Nothing has worked. Please help anyone. Thanks

ckoeshall: The note you quoted from that article concerns desktop Macs, most or all of which use non-rechargeable PRAM batteries. The internal backup battery in your Tibook is rechargeable, and is responsible for maintaining your time and date settings when both the main battery and the AC adapter are disconnected. It will only last a few minutes under those circumstances, though (it lasts long enough to let you change the main battery or get connected to AC power when your main battery runs down). You haven't mentioned that your time and date settings don't hold (but of course they're lost when you reset PRAM or the PMU), and I'm not aware that a depleted backup battery can cause the wake-from-sleep problem you're experiencing.
To recharge your backup battery just to eliminate it as a possible factor in your problem, remove the main battery and leave the PB connected to AC power for 4-5 hours. It takes much longer to charge the backup battery if the main battery is in place and in need of charging too, because the main battery evidently gets priority.
The fact that you have a third-party main battery probably has nothing at all to do with your problem. By now, I suspect that a large majority of Tibook users are operating with third-party batteries, since Apple no longer sells them.

  • Boot Problem! Slow start up, shut down and wake from sleep mode.

I have a MBP late 2009. I used it a long time whit Snow Leopard, few month ago i did an upgrade to Mavericks.
To start up it takes 30-40 seconds until appear the apple logo. Then 2 minutes more to start up the sistem.
When I wake the machine from sleep mode it takes 40 seconds to be working.
    Shut down 40 seconds.
Even sometime it get frezze using only Safari.
    Things I have tried:
    Reinstall Snow Leopard (clean install)
    Install Mavericks (clean install)
    Replace the HD
    ¿Any idea?
    Sorry for mi poor English

    Chepoka,
have you ensured that all of your installed software is compatible with Mavericks?
If you boot into Safe mode, does it still take 40 seconds to awaken from sleeping, or to shut down? (It will take longer to start up in Safe mode because it will perform “sanity checks” on your boot disk.)
If you have a bootable external disk with Mavericks installed, use Startup Manager to boot from the external disk. Does it take just as long to boot, awaken from sleep, and shut down from the external disk as it does from the internal disk?

  • Will not wake from sleep mode

When I close then open the lid on my MacBook, it will not wake up from sleep mode.  I have to reboot by holding down the power button for 10 sec.  When it restarts, it takes a long time to get past the gray screen with the apple logo.  I also have this same problem when it goes into sleep mode, when left idle.  I have since changed the settings so it will not go into sleep mode when idle in system preferences.  I have reset PRAM and SMC, but the problem still persists.

I have the same problem, intermittently.  I think it has something to do with full-screen mode, which I use intermittently.  Have you noticed this happening only when you are in a full-screen app?
I also have a MacBook Pro from 2011, and I know for sure my MagSafe power adapter is fine and not part of the problem.
I have noticed a few things that may be hints at what is happening:
one time, (all??) while my screen was basking in the glow of sunlight from the side, I saw that the screen pixels were indeed "on", that the back-light of the screen was just off.
Which led me to the conclusion that my MacBook Pro was indeed waking from sleep, the screen was just not lighting up.
But that theory was disproved this morning, when when waking from sleep, the screen was black, except for my cursor. My cursor was completely visible on a black background.  Huh??  It was like some software was putting up a black modal dialog over the whole screen. Also, the Apple Logo on the back of the laptop screen was fully lit -- meaning the backlight was on.  The machine was awake (curson moving on a black background), and the screen was fully back-lit.
I'm not sure yet how consistent this behavior is...  I will take more careful notes each time this problem happens in the future...  But, it looks like I have rogue software that is trying to make my machine look like it is sleeping.
To "capture" the culprit I think I could set up a hot-key command that takes a snapshot of all running processes in Activity Monitor. This could show what processes are running when "waking" from sleep. nabbing the culprit?
I use Snapz Pro. That is non-standard software running with control over screen functions. Maybe Snapz Pro has a problem?  I doubt it, but maybe, because it has hooks into background tasks with video. Snapz Pro is my only 32-bit process. Could Snapz Pro be the cause?  I use Snapz Pro all the time.
The problem seems to be related to Full-Screen mode.  Could it be possible that full-screen apps sometimes have problems returning from sleep?  I know there are viewControllers responsible for handling events when waking. Could the symptoms of not waking from sleep be caused by bugs in full-screen apps?
