Computer disabled - Quicktime & Flip4mac

It used to be that I could view videos received via email (wmv, etc) I lost that many, many months ago. I upgraded and now am at latest version of QT (7.1.5?). Today I decided to do something about this and read some discussions and downloaded Flip4Mac. Well - it never finished the download. I have a spinning disc (cursor) and can do absolutely nothing except to restart from restart button or unplug. Every time that I turn the computer on I have several seconds before this takes over but then I'm stuck with this spinning disc (acting as if downloading I suppose).
I cannot force quit.
I tried to start holding the shift key down when restarting. No difference.
I tried to reset PRAM - no difference.
I don't have the software CD as I bought this particular G4 second hand.
HELP?
G4 400 w/1 GB Ram MAC OS (10.3.9)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Dual boot to OS 9.2.2

Prairiewolf, you cannot use machine specific CDs from one mac to another. If you do, you will do damage to your system.
As I suggested previously, you will need to contact the seller & obtain the original System Install CDs that came w/the computer. Per Apple's License Agreement it is illegal to sell Mac computers without the System CDs that originally came w/the computer. The reason being is because they are *machine specific.*
You may be able to get replacement System Install & Restore CDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 or 800-275-2273 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
Or you may need to puchase a retail univeral full installer CDs.
Regarding OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.1, ask the vendors the color of the CD lable. All universal full install CDs are white w/an orange/golden 9.x on it.
http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html(RECOMMENDED BY APPLE)
http://welovemacs.com/apsyso.html
http://www.applerescue.com
Do NOT buy a gray installation CD - those are not universal installers but model-specific [NO matter what the seller says about them!] OEM-versions have caused problems in the past when used on other computer models.
*The above is the same if you decide to purchase off of eBay.*
Furthermore, as this is a forum for QuickTime issues, you need to repost all your current issues in the Panther forums. Please see the Panther Forum link in my March 11, 2007 post in this thread.
Good luck!

  • Disabling Quicktime's handling of downloaded TIFF files in IE7

Prior to installing Quicktime 7, "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" was the default application used by Internet Explorer 7 to automatically open downloaded TIFF files. After installing Quicktime 7, it became the default application - which is something I most certainly do not want.
If I change (within Quicktime) the appropriate MIME content setting that disables Quicktime's handling of TIFF files, Internet Explorer continues to use Quicktime for displaying TIFF files. Same thing happens if I configure Quicktime to not be the default application used for opening TIFF files. If I disable the Quicktime ActiveX control in Internet Explorer and then try to view a TIFF file downloaded via Internet Explorer, I get an error message to the effect that the Quicktime ActiveX control is disabled.
The only way I can solve the problem is to uninstall Quicktime.
Is there some other solution I'm missing?

I needed to change the CLSID entry in the following two registry keys from that of Quicktime's to that of Microsoft Office Document Imaging:
    HKEYCLASSESROOT -> MIME -> Database -> Content Type -> image/tiff
    and
    HKEYCLASSESROOT -> MIME -> Database -> Content Type -> image/x-tiff
The Quicktime installer changes the CLSID entry in both these registry keys to its own, irrespective of how one configures Quicktime at the time of installation. After installation, the Quicktime settings control panel also fails to switch these CLSID settings from Quicktime back to the default, and that control panel seems to simply ignore any changes made by the user as regards these settings.
Alas, while this solution solved the problem on my personal computer, it has not solved the problem on a large corporate network of PCs where I work - and the only reliable solution thus far has been to request the network admins to permanently uninstall Quicktime.

  • Disable QuickTime

Help! I would like to view movie files with Windows Media Player, not Quicktime. But I have iTunes which won't work when I uninstall Quicktime. Everytime I download a movie file it opens up automatically in quicktime even though I specified Windows media player as my default player. How do I disable quicktime and prevent it from opening all my mov, mpg, wmv, ari, avi etc files?

    Thanks for you patience...
I've already selected WMP in the custom add/remove control panel before I wrote about the problem.
To right click on a media file on my computer means i have to save it on my computer, which I don't want to do. I tried that and indeed if opened from my computer it uses WMP. But I want to be able to open files from the inet without having to save them first on my computer.
In my browser (firefox) I can choose what program to open files with (the "open file with ___" and "always use this program for...this type of file") small window that opens when clicking on) only if the file online is a WMV. All other files clicked on go directly to another browser window and download and play simaltaneously, with quicktime. The window that gives me the option to choose which prgram to use, doesn't open in these cases.
Previously (and with my desktop right now as well) I did not have this problem. It started when I downloaded iTunes for the first time on my new laptop 2 weeks ago.

  • Disable QuickTime plug-in...

How can i disable quicktime's plug-in in Firefox?
    Thanks.

    You cant.
In a webenvironement you have very limited access to the browser. Diabling plugins is definitly not one of the things you are allowed to do on the client from your webpage

  • Is there a way to temporarily disable Quicktime in Windows 7?

Is there a way to temporarily disable Quicktime in Windows 7? I can't download any music from sites other than itunes, a player opens and streams the song instead. I download a lot of music and I'm crippled

I can't download any music from sites other than itunes, a player opens and streams the song instead.
That is a setting in your browser that tells it what to do with an MP3 file.  For example, if you are using Firefox, go to Options > Applications.  For "MP3 Format Sound," change it from QuickTime to "Always Ask."
    Other browsers have similar settings.

    Thanks gitmar,
Indeed VLC opens both, avi and mpv, fine. Good media viewer! But why not Quicktime nor Final Cut?
Maybe post in the Quicktime or Final Cut forums here and you may well get an answer.

  • Registry key to disable Quicktime 7.6.8

    Application: Apple QuickTime 7.6.8
    OS: Windows XP
Problem: I need to disable Quicktime from updating across the board. They pop-ups are annoying to my customers and autoupdating is not part of software release process.
What Registry key stops this app from updating?

Same problem here. The only thing that fixes this is to revert back to 7.6.5. I have no idea what is causing this. Do you use Squeeze to compress?

  • Movie won't play on computer say quicktime is incompatible

downloaded purchased movie won't play on computer say quicktime is incompatible. I get this message for Hannibal Rising: This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes.

First, thank you for taking the time to respond.
This is the recorder I have: Sony DVD Recorder & VHS Combo PlayerRDR-VX515:

The specs stated that it does record MPEG video.
The Mac mini is a super drive w/ + & - capability. I guess I'll have to buy another recorder to get this to work.

  • Quicktime / Flip4Mac crash that also crashes Safari!

    Hi,
I have an irritating problem. Every time I visit this site: www.ynet.co.il (this is the top israeli daily news site) my Safari crashes. When I disable "Plug-ins" in Safari preferences it does NOT crash. Then I started looking around and I found that the crash is related to the Flip4Mac WMV player. When this plugin checkbox is set to "set Flip4Mac WMV browser plug-in", Safari crashes. This check box is grayed out and it does not allow me to uncheck it. What I can do is set the checkbox "Launch quicktime player" in the same Flip4Mac options screen, which means that instead of trying to play the wmv file inside the browser, the quicktime player is launched to play the file. This way Safari doesn't crash, but quicktime always does.
    This is an annoying problem.
I have Leopard 10.5.2 cleanly installed, the latest updates to all the applications and plugins (including Flip4Mac and Safari). There are no other plugins installed except "Perian", but I do not think that the problem comes from there. This is clearly a Flip4Mac / Quicktime problem that also affects safari.
    Any ideas?

It looked like it might be. You're playing video on that iPod looking thing on the page, I take it?
(Safari didn't crash until after the page loaded, so I got a very quick glimpse of it)
It's very possible that the H.264 stream is the reason my Safari crashed. Again, I am still on QT-6 pending an Avid update, but the Avid version that supports QT-7 requires OS X.4, which I haven't bought yet. So, yeah, I am missing out for now. 8-)

  • How to disable Quicktime but keep iTunes usable

Hi, thanks to anyone for looking at this...maybe you can help. I spend a lot of time on the US Patent and Trademark Office website, and to view patents filed online you need a special TIFF viewer, which I have. Quicktime, once installed, overrides it as the TIFF viewer which I hate because it gives no print options or sizing, save, zoom, etc. as my other TIFF viewer does.
I've tried opening the Quicktime preferences menu and basically disabling all streaming or web options, and then disabled it from the Internet Explorer add-ons menu and enabling my other TIFF viewer, but as long as Quicktime is installed I cannot view the TIFF files except with Quicktime.
Hope someone can help...I miss using iTunes! (won't work without QT).

In QT settings have you tryed unchecking the TIFF preferences listed in File Types and in Browser Mime Settings? Also try right clicking on a TIFF that is on the computer, go to properties, where it shows Opens with: click on the change button and choose the media program that you want to handle the file.

  • Disabling quicktime streaming in IE7

I've just installed the new itunes/qt update and qt has set itself as the default streaming player for IE7. I want video to play externally in WMP but I can't stop the QT association.
I've unchecked all the file types in QT and the browser streaming option, and disabled the plug-in in IE7, but it still tries to play in the browser window with QT. now IE7 crashes after trying too.
i'm normally an Apple fanboy but quicktime really bugs me.

I'm not entirely sure about this but since no one else is helping you I will give it a shot, and if doesn't wok this will not harm your computer.
    1. Open WMP
    2. On the toolbar press tools and down to options
    3. Click on the tab "file types"
    4. Select all or select the ones you want
    5. Close WMP and restart the browser
I'm not sure this will help, I'm pretty sure it will though.
    Hope it helps

  • Why can't I export WMV's on my other computer's quicktime 7 pro, even though I can on my other computer using the same registration?

I have a registration for quicktime pro and im setting up a second home computer
I need to make wmv's for clients, but I for some reason, even though it says quicktime PRO with the same registration, the wmv is not an option on the drop down for exports.
any idea on how I can get this computer to do the same as my other one?

  • Disable quicktime plug-in opening TIF files in browsers?

Whenever I click on a TIF file in a browser (Chrome or Safari), Quicktime plug-in tries to open the file. I'd rather have the file opened by an application that actually works (quicktime fails to load or displays garbage in most cases, but I do not care - I just want it gone) or just downloaded without opening (preferred). Rightclicking to opt for download is not an option on the sites I use. In windows I could disable it via Quicktime icon in Control Panel, but I cannot find a comparable thing on the Mac. This is unbelievably frustrating. It cost me more than the Macbook itself in lost productivity...

I already have TIFF files set to open with Preview. Nonetheless, USPTO.GOV website image files are all in TIFF format and it renders a broken plugin error in all browsers (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Firefox). Opera is actually the only browser that gives me the option to download the file, but that is cludgey. Anyone get it to actually work as a plugin?
