Computer display flashing on and off

So for the past couple weeks, whenever we turn on our computer, our display flashes on and off to the point to where its practically unusable. Eventually it stops after at least half an hour of blinking, but I was wondering, what could be wrong and how could I fix it? The computer isn't really affected, between flashes it isn't shutting down and the log in is still available, however, it only shows what I'm doing for a second before flashing back off. We tried switching displays but that didn't work either. Is there anything that could be done or should we just get rid of it?

Glad that you found the cause, expensive as it may be. I am not sure about this Out of Range message. What sort of monitor are you using? Most will connect and the Displays preferences self adjust.
Within the preferences are a number of display resolutions and refresh frequencies (in Hz) but these are not always shown (for example with my notebook monitor it displays resolutions not refresh rates (always the same for the built in monitor) but when I attach a monitor, such as HDTV or projector, I am offered a range of rates for each resolution.

  • Second Display flashing on and off randomly

Since upgrading to Lion, my second display (ViewSonic VX2235wm) flashes on and off frequently. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? This problem is with a second display hooked to my 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's driving me nuts!

I've since tried other resolutions and haven't found any others that are stable.  I've used the monitor with another system and had no problems and the problem started immediately after the Lion install, so the issue is clearly Lion-related.
I haven't heard of many people having this issue, so I'm contemplating upgrading the monitor to get around it. (Longterm, the 1360x768 solution is unacceptable to me as it stretches the image.) I think it may be specific to a few makes/models of monitors and possibly even to a graphics chip/monitor combo. I think if it were more general, there would be more noise about it: a two monitor set-up isn't uncommon.

  • External Display flashes on and off will not stay on.

When I turn on my Samsung external LCD display which is connected to the iMac, it flickers on and off and will not stay on. What could cause this problem. I tried different resolution settings to no effect. I had been using the display without problems until recently. I wonder if it was a system software update.

Are you using some sort of adapter to hook it to the Mac? I know on my iMac that I use an external monitor on I use a mini DVI to VGA connector. If you are using something like that it could be the adaptor.
I would think if it was software there would be more posts on it. Yours is the only one I have read on this subject.

  • Why is my Thunderbolt display flashing on and off?

    Hi -
I ave a 25 month old Thunderbolt 27" display that I run from my 25 month old (1 month past the applecare) MacBook Pro.  Since upgrading to Mavericks my MBP runs like junk - but that may be another story.
Last night - shortly after connecting the MBP and booting up, the display started going black for a second and then coming back. This happened about 5 times within the next 2 minutes before I shut down, checked all the connections and rebooted.  Within a minute of being fully operational it started again so I shut down again.  On the third boot things calmed down.  It flashed once - off then on - then stablized for the rest of the night.  All of this time the screen on the MBP itself remained on and un-flickering.
    What is happening??
I've checked all the cables and they are exactly as they were when I set the thing up 25 months ago.
Is there a battery that has to be changed?
Is the MBP causing this or is the display dying on it's own?
I should be able to get more than 25 months out of a monitor - don't you think?
Can anyone lead me to a solution?
    TIA -
    j2

I saw it happen the other day and realized that I had left a piece of paper on the track pad. As soon as I removed the paper it stopped. Computer seems fine.

  • MBP display flashes on and off, then the MBP freezes

Recently, my MBP started acting up. I can't figure it out. The display will go black, then will return to normal (over and over). After awhile, it just freezes. Any ideas?

    MacBook Pro 1.83Ghz, eMac G4 1.25Ghz, iBook G3 600Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It could be a power inverter problem, but you might try a disc repair to see if it's software related.
Start in single user mode by holding down Apple/S at startup
When you see scrolling text let go of the keys
When the text stops and you see a #root: prompt enter
    fsck -fy
    and hit return
Let it run through all the checks and repairs; if it fails first time run it again, if it finds and repairs anything run it again. (Some fixes can take a few passes) When it says "appears to be OK" enter
    reboot

Do you have Parallels installed by any chance?  There is a known problem that causes symptoms similar to this.  You do not need to actually be running Parallels at the time and nothing in ActivityMonitor would point to Parallels.  An update corrects the problem:

  • Monitor keeps flashing on and off

I have a mac G4 quicksilver running 10.4.11. The machine runs fine for what it is. The problem is with the monitor. I had an old apple display hooked up to it which began to flash on and off --- for no reason. I would unplug the monitor for a while, plug it back in, it would work fine for a bit...then the power would flash on and off...on and off...over and over. So, I thought the problem was with the monitor. I got a second monitor from work, which has never had any problems, plugged it into the G4 and before long, the same thing was happening to the new monitor...power turning on and off, on and off. For a while it will work...then just go off.
Since the same thing is happening with both monitors, this leads me to think it’s something with the G4...but I don’t know what. Maybe the port where the monitor plugs into on the back of the computer is bad?? Is that possible?
Does anyone have any ideas?? Can someone point me in the right direction of what I need to check?

Hi! For starters open it up and see if the video card has a fan on it and if so verify if it's working. Once you are sure of that you can start troubleshooting the problem better. Tom

  • Apple 30" Display turning on and off by itself? HELP!

    Greetings,
I'm experience this weird problem with my 30 inch display. I don't know why it's happening or to begin to troubleshoot it. So basically, I'm shutting down my computer and display every night. The next day the display power light is on by itself before I turn the computer back on, sometimes it's flashing on and off. And when I turn the computer on it doesn't change, the display just turns on and off every few seconds.
I found a temporary fix, which is to un-and-replug the display's psu either from the wall or just from the psu brick... that'll prevent the problem from happen until the next after it's been off the entire night. WHY?
Any help on this would greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead.

I'm getting the same thing myself. I also have the problem that the display sometimes flickers on and off when I first boot up. Again... unplugging the ACD power from the brick and back in again temporarily cures it. I initially thought it was the video card in my Mac, an ATI 2600XT because the card eventually died. However, I have just put an Nvidia GT120 in the machine and the same thing is happening. The display works fine with my Macbook Pro 2.6. Any ideas would be most welcome.

  • My iPhone 5 keeps flashing on and off when charging?

Okay. So everytime I go to charge the iPhone 5, it charges, but it flashes on and off while doing so.
Does anyone else have the same problem? Is it supposed to do this?

    Hello Afelipe,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone 5.
I recommend following these steps for an issue like this:
If a single application is not responding or stops responding when it opens, you can force it to close.
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
You can find the full article here:

If you get to step 5, I recommend backing up your iPhone before performing the restore:

  • Ipod flashing on and off

Alright, I had to do a full restore on my computer and lost everything. Plugged the Ipod in afterwards, and lost all my songs/movies. Well now it told me that I had to download the update in order to put new songs on. I did. Now the ipod is flashing on and off and wont let me do anything. I tried reseting it, and it turns off, but as soon as I let go of the buttons it goes right back to flashing on and off. I need some help. Anything anyone could tell me?

I have the same problem, created first when iPod updated on Friday night. I returned the month old iPod for a new one, installed and was downloading library when the new Ipod went into the same catastrophic failure.
HERE IS THE FIX: (walked through w/ Apple Store Rep)
    1. Make sure there is power to the iPod (with all the cycling, your battery is probably drained).
    2. Toggle the Lock Switch on top of the iPod 3 or 4 times, then hold Menu and Center Button down simultaneously (same as doing a reset).
    3. When the Apple Logo reappears, hold the Center Button and the Play/Pause button down simultaneouly.
    4. If all goes well, the screen should say, at the very top, Disk Drive Mode (or something to that effect).
    5. If you have been running off computer power, disconnect then reconnect the usb cable.
    6. Open iTunes
If all goes well, the iPod connection should appear on the iTunes screen with the opportunity to Restore.
    7. Restore your iPod to factory settings. Once the download is complete, you should be back in business.

  • 6700 Classic screen flashing on and off since scre...

I have just changed the LCD screen on my 6700. The new screen works fine whilst the phone is in use, but as soon as the normal standby happens, ie after about 20 seconds, the screen starts to flash on and off. As soon as any of the buttons is pressed the screen stops flashing and is on and back to normal. I have tried resetting to factory default. Tried to update firmware, but the version is 10.50 and is unable to be updated.
Is there a way to obtain the latest version of the firmware via my PC so that it can be uploaded to the phone?
Is it possible that there may be a fault with the screen or ribbon cable, which is strange as the screen work fine and displays all pixels when in use.
Any suggestions as to what can be tried next?

    Thanks for speedy reply.
Yes I did change the screen myself as the local approved Nokia Repair Centre would not replace the screen under warranty as they stated that cracked screens are not covered by the Nokia warranty. They then mentioned that they had none in stock anyway and were not placing their next order until 24th October.
I have now put the cracked screen back into the phone and normal operation has been resumed. From this I conclude that although the new screen worked fine when the phone was in use, there is an inbuilt fault that causes the flashing.
Thanks for the info on the updates, that was the process that I was trying to use. Once i typed in the code number from the phone, the website said that 10.50 was the correct firmware.

  • Pages not loading / loading slowly / flashing on and off

    MacBook Pro
    OS X 10.5.8
    Safari 5.0.6
I have had trouble with loading pages on Safari lately on my MacBook Pro. Some take forever to load, and when they do, they load either incomplete, or not at all, leaving a white screen (even when some images appeared, they disappear). I started noticing the problem the worst when I installed an app for an online focus group that I took part in. The app's purpose, I think, was to monitor my browsing, so they could collect data to see where I was shopping for phones, going on social networks, etc. When the app was connected, safari simply did not want to load; when it was off, it worked better. I have de-installed it (I think) using their de-install function. However, the problem has continued even without the app running.
Another problem that has recently appeared is that some pages (specifically, my gmail) have started to flash on and off at times. At first it happened during the use of the app, but it still occurs even after de-installing the app.
The only other thing I think might have affected my macbook is that we recently installed a time capsule as our router (I think my husband needed to upgrade our OS on one of the laptops in order to make it work? Not sure, he may just have wanted to upgrade it in order to connect our new iPads.)
I will say, that my Safari / internet experience has been rather slower than it was when I first got the computer, and has gotten a bit annoying over the last few months - not terrible, but I know it's just not working like it should.
    1) What can I do to alleviate the loading / flashing issue?
    2) Are there any steps I can take to "cleanse" my computer of unneccessary items that may be bogging it down?
Bonus: What do I need to do before loading a new OS on my current Pro?
Many thanks for any advice you can contribute!

    Hi ...
    1. Try a Safe Mode boot.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Mac OS X: What is Safe Mode?
    2. Reformat (erase) the hard drive. Insert the install disc while holidng down the C key.
Unfortunately, a reformat will erase everything off the drive back to factory settings but may be the only way to erdicate any left over files associated wih that app.
Before you do that, you could try searching for anything related to the app using Spotlight >  Mac Basics: Spotlight
Any software that monitors online activity is bound to have an affect on a browser.

    Hello tacole,
I would be concerned as well if my iPod nano was not responsive.  I found a resource that I think would help in a situation like this.
I recommend following the steps in this troubleshooting assistant for your iPod nano model if possible:
