Computer forcing me to restart - HELP!
Not impressed, 2 months out of apple care... Every now and then the computer forces me to restart, the screen darkens and tells me I have to restart.
I reformatted (10.6), used the computer for a bit - it's happening again. Here is part of what came up after this last time, I don't know how to make sense of it.

So I have reformatted, haven't yet installed updates - although I doubt it's a software problem at this point. There is after market ram in the computer, but I have the original sitting here. Is there a way to tell if its the ram before I swap it out?

Download and run Rember-Memory Test to check your RAM.
You may also want to boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk and run the Extended test in a loop (Control + L during test). Let it run for several loops as it sometimes take a while for intermittent issues to surface.

My system preferences won't load. It opens straight up to the desktop folder and pictures won't load, leaving me with a color wheel. I've tried restarting my computer and that doesn't help. System preferences just won't open/load at all. Any ideas?

If it's a thin 1 pixel wide vertical line it's highly likely it could be caused by a defective LCD.
One quick basic way to check is to note the position of the line. Then go to System Preferences, Displays, and lower the resolution. If ther line moves it's on the video and the logic board or video card if fitted is likely to be defective. If the line stays in the same position it's likely to be an LCD fault. Either way to have it repaired you'll need to visit an Apple store or AASP.
The worst offender for this problem is the Late 2006 17" iMac. FOC replacement of the LCD used to be covered by a quality program, but it's now ended.

First run disk utility on your hard drive to repair it , also repair permissions then give it a try.

Force quitting a "Mac Help" Window
I was using Numbers on iWork 08 and I clicked the *"Mac Help"* on the main option bar. I typed a question and the Mac Help froze. I assumed that if I closed the Numbers application, that the Mac Help would then clear away. Apparently the problem was not within the Numbers Application, but simply just with Mac Help. I tried force quitting but when I open Force Quit to select Mac Help as one of the programs I quit, it isn't listed in the options. It still has the little Pinwheel showing the Mac Help is loading, and it's been that way for the past hour. It can manually move it around the screen, but it stays in front of whatever windows I have open. I cannot delete it, and the only way I can see it clearing from my screen would be to restart my computer. I do not want to do this, and I am just wondering if there is another way of *force quitting the Mac Help*.
Try this:
Open *Activity Monitor* in Applications>Utilities. Sort these by "Process Name." Find *Help Viewer*, then click the *Force Quit* button (looks like a stop sign). That should solve things!

ITunes Sign In To Use This Computer / iTunes crashes / iTunes restarts
I have been having this problem on and off for a very long time now, through at least one major update of the iTunes software. I recently purchased an album from the iTunes store and the problem has returned. I've searched the forums for advice and got a lot of very weird advice. None of it helped.
The problem is: when I start my MacBook Pro (12 months old, all OS patches installed 10.7.3), iTunes 10.6 starts then request that I "Sign In To Use This Computer for Automatic Downloads." iTunes does not recognize my password; displays a slightly different dialog screen that says "Sign In Required," then back to "Sign In To Use This Computer for Automatic Downloads," which repeats and repeats then switches to the other dialog "Sign In Required," then back to "Sign In To Use This Computer for Automatic Downloads," et cetera. If you cancel out, which it accepts after hitting cancel three times, then navigate to the iTunes Store, the iTunes Store starts to load, then iTunes crashes, asks you if you want to send a report to Apple (I've personally sent at least a 100 of these already), then iTunes restarts. You can't kill it - if you force quit, it restarts immediately.
Any suggestions other than Authorizing / Deauthorizing / Deleting the SC Info Folder?I have this same problem iMac Lion 10.7.3, iTunes 10.6.1(7). Any ideas what I can do to stop it?

Will not turn on or screen remains dark
- Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
- If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
- If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
- If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.

My computer has been spontaneously restarting itself. This last time I wasn't even at the keyboard, I was across the room. I don't know what to make of it, completely baffled. I'd love some help on this, and if it could come in layman's terms I'd love it even more.

If the Mac freezes, it may be a preference setting.
Check System Preferences > Energy Saver
See if Restart automatically if the computer freezes is selected. If it is, deselect that box. -
Hi guys and gals
Have not used my macbook pro for couple of months and now she is frozen - opens to wallpaper on desktop of snow leopard but absolutely no response with mouse or track pad . Screen goes blank after 5 mins then the only response is from the power button . When pressed the screen lights up with window asking if i want to shut down or.....enter has no response . Only option is to force shutdown and restart yet this does not resolve issue.....back to square one!!!!

Both Chrome and Finder seemed to freeze, so I restarted the computer. When the restart finished, I was in recovery mode. How do I get back to my regular login screen?
It starts up and asks for a language. After English, it goes to the OS X Utilities screen. I have gone to disk utility and verified the disks. They both say they are okay. If I click repair, it comes back with an error saying "Live file system repair is not supported." I just want my computer back to normal! Please help! I am still in Mavericks if it matters.Do you have a backup? If so, in the Recovery Partition go to Disk Utility/Erase, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), click Option GUID, and erase the disk. Left USB-Port dead after wake from sleep. Just restart helps.
I hoped Apples keyboard-Update today would solve my biggest hate-bug in this buggy POS called Leopard. It didn't.
As usual on my Leopard-Macbook Pro, no device will work on the left USB-Port after I waked the computer from sleep. Just a restart helps. I hoped this update to solve this, because it replaced among others "IOUSBFamily.kext".
Terminal gives a timeout error for the internal USB-Hub after wake from sleep. I assumed this should be related.
I'm really angry now.
When will Apple solve the most urgent problems in Leopard?
Was 10.5.1 just smoke and mirrors to make (fool people into...) people upgrade who intended to wait until the first maintenance-update?
Was Leopard Apples attempt to make Windows-Users more comfortable by putting in some heavy extra-bugs and blue screens?
FIX IT FINALLY! And f... don't wait for Macworld to release 10.5.2. It's desperately needed and the current state of Leopard will leave some people very sad at christmas after getting their first Mac. First impression counts and many more peoples first contact with the Mac will be at christmas...Apple knows the problem and for some reason they are stumped on fixing it. this is so bad I can't believe it. On my macbook pro with Leopard installed, USB left port is dead after sleep. Only restarting can power it back up. I have to restart every day to use my external hard drive for time machine or when putting my flash drive in the port.
Come on already Apple. This is a SERIOUS, SERIOUS problem.

So I got the ipad for christmas, turned it on & it worked fine. Later I entered a passcode. Now I can remember the passcode & the ipad is locked for 60 mins. The ipad was never configured to a computer at the beginning. someone help.

3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
4. Select the Summary tab.
5. Select the Restore option.
6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
necessary to create another.
7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
