Computer idling sound | CHUD tools...

Hi there,
Since a few weeks (I guess since I installed OS X.4), I've noticed that my computer makes a subtle sound (kind of metallic) every single second. It's driving me crazy.
In the this page: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86523 I discovered that my computer makes the the computer idling sound (the first one on the page).
I downloaded the CHUD tools, but I have no idea how they works... I don't understand anything! (Apparently, it will install a System Preference pane for the processor. With it, you can disable CPU nap, which lessens the noise for some.)
And turning the speakers up a bit won't help me because I work without music... I need quiet to concentrate.
Thanks!
Chris.

There are various opinions on whether it will damage your machine over a period of time. It does indeed increase the temp' though (I have tested it on my 2.3 dual machine). My opinion is that you should monitor the G5 while using it with NAP off. In my case, it only varied by 10 degrees, which is not a lot.
Just do a search on the word "NAP" and you will see many emails on this subject. It was a hot (no pun intended) topic on this forum at one time.

  • Chud Tools 'Allow Nap' Problems

Hi all, before i go down the road of trying to get my powerbook looked at by an agent can anybody tell if they have had the same problems and managed to get them resolved via an apple specialist or will i just be fobbed off.
Here's the problem. I launch Pro Tools and the powerbook makes a real loud static fuzz sound. I untick the 'allow nap' feature in the processor pane of chud tools and the sound stops. Also when i'm using intense apps like FCP and Motion i get a grinding hamster wheel sound. Once again i untick 'allow nap' and the problem go's away. I think downloading a developer tool and messing with the processor isnt really much cop for a £1300 laptop. Can anybody shed any light and more importantly has anybody managed to resolve this problem.
    Regards
    Mike
PS: The sounds emit from around the top left of the powerbook and they are not coming out of the speakers.

As for the sound issues have a look as there is some idea about a fix comming in 10.4.5
    http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1519
Likely you might have more luck with the UNIX forums under support/osx technology's /unix as maybe there might be inteligent life but not when I needed it.
PS: the NAP option is not permanetly disabled and if you managed to get it permanently disabled the you should be well on you way.
I just erased / reinstalled and avoided any unneaded files/programs and mine is running like a charm.
I even stress test it with UT2004 at max playable options for 5 hours spectating online and getting some good maps in the same time and it still runs like a charm.
There where just a few creaking movement noises as the part adjusted to the heat but it runs cool @ avg 60C.
    Hope this helps.
Have you seacrhed for "disable nap" on google or macupdate.com etc. etc.
There might be a permanent fix there.

  • AOL Install Fix using CHUD Tools

    Hello,
For those of you who were asking about how to fix the AOL install problem on Intel Macs, here is a tip I found at macosxhints.com:
AOL seems to have a problem installing on multi-core Intel Macs. The installation hangs at "Installing Main Database." I found a successful workaround for this problem. Go to Apple's developer website and download the CHUD Tools. Once installed, there will be a Processor preference pane in System Preferences. Use this to turn off all but one Intel processor, then run the AOL installer. Once the installer finishes, turn the processors back on. Disabling CPUs solved install issues with other apps.
    JLM

Holy cow, what a piece of junk installer. SERIOUSLY?!?! The AOL engineers never in their lives tested their application on a multi-CPU machine?
Seriously. How would anyone trust something so junky to their machine.

  • Download CHUD Tools then massive power failure

    HELP, PLEASE!!!
I've had my MACs for about 6 years now and never had any real problems. Recently however I noticed the G4 starting running quite hot and loud so I decided to use CHUD tools to cool it down a bit. I downloaded the app and ran the 'previous CHUD versions' checker as instructed. As soon as I clicked on it the machine shut down and I've been unable to restart since. (I don't think it actualy launched and I didn't get as far as installing the actual tools app)
The power light has a solid white light on when depressed, but goes no further. I've investigated the cause quite thoroughly and read all the forums about the G4 PSU failure,PRAM reset, battery changing,CPU reseting etc. I've done all of those and have the +5v trivkle on pin 1 of 24 of the PSU.
I've also tried a different hard drive in the machine - trying to ascertain whether it is the CHUD tools causing the problem (software/hardware problem?)and it still won't power up. Therefore I think that it's just a crazy coincidence that I launched CHUD and then had this failure as the 'non-CHUD infected' drive should have enabled the machine to launch I think.
So I'm wondering, I think it has to be either the PSU or power switch itself. I have the 5v trickle as mentioned, but are there further tests I can do on a 24 pin supply to confirm its status please?
If not, Is there a way of testing the power switch on the front of the machine please?
THANKS VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!
    regards
    Dan

Even if by 'PRAM reset' you mean use of the PMU switch, you may not have hit upon the single most useful first approach to an MDD that fails to start up: resetting the MLB.
Switch off mains power at the wall or power-board. Open the door and ground yourself on the internal metalwork, Remove the PRAM battery. Unplug the mains cable at the Mac end. (This is Apple's recommendation, but I don't follow it because Australian GPOs—power outlets—are universally grounded three-pin sockets. If your GPO tests as reliably grounded, as well as switched, you don't need to do so, either.)
Wait at least 10min. Replug the mains cable into the Mac (if you separated it above), but do not yet switch on mains power. Ground yourself again. Restore the PRAM battery only if it shows above 3.3V in circuit. Otherwise, replace it with a new battery. Wait 20sec. Press the PMU reset switch for 1sec once, and once only. If the switch bounces it will be interpreted by the PMU as two presses, with an entirely wrong outcome. The PMU is extremely sensitive to stray charge, so make sure that the hand that presses the button is also in contact with the metalwork of the door.
Close the door, switch on the mains supply and start up the Mac from the touch-sensitive 'button' on the ADC display. Given nothing worse than the Mac's former confusion as the cause of its failure, you should be up and away. If not, failure of your PSU is a distinct possibility.

  • CHUD tools failed to install (want to disable HT)

    hey all.
I have a 13" macbook air (2011 late version)  i love it but would like to turn off HT. i have Hyper-threading off on my gaming PC and i love how much less power it uses as well as less heat output.
well when i installed the CHUD tools it fails at the end. but im still able to install the processor system pref icon. when i open up the settings the settings are missing. like clock speeds are not being shown and if i chose to unchech hyper threading and or maybe a core the settings dont stick???
is this a known issue with macbook airs or OSX 10.7.2??
i really really would like to disable Hyper threading.  please help me out.  thanks

i have a late 2011 2.4ghz 15" mbp and am also interested inturning off HT. all the other forums i look at say There is a command you can use to turn of hyperthreading it is "sudo nvram smt=0" once you type it in it will ask you for your password. Try it and see if it changes anything becuase i have set the smt to 0 and nothing has changed for me but it may change something for you. what are you using to see how many active cores there are? istat menus?

  • CHUD tools for current-gen 13" and Lion

    Hello,
I have a current-gen 13" and I'm looking to disable hyperthreading and possibly one core and underclock using CHUD tools and hwprefs:
    sudo hwprefs -v cpu_count=1
    sudo hwprefs -v cpu_ht=0
When I tried installing the CHUD tools the installer went all the way through and then told me it failed, however hwprefs is available in Terminal. Running those commands shows me this:
    * 2 processors available *
    * processor hyperthreading enabled *
I'm glad it's smart and knows that stuff but that's not what I wanted. Does anyone have experience with this?

I just sucessfully installed the CHUD tools on 10.7.2, and am now using CPUPalette.app, located in /Library/Application Support/HWPrefs. What version of Lion did you try to install CHUD on?
Alternatively, you can go into the Preferences for Instruments.app, which is installed with Lion's XCode from the App Store, and turn off processor cores.

music sounds perfect on computer, but sounds muffled on burned cd from same computer! any ideas?

If you are talking about audio artifacts (e.g. static) especially on the higher-numbered tracks, re-do the burn with a fresh CD-R (not CD-RW) at a low burn speed such as 2x or 1x.
The burn speed is set on the dialog that comes up when you request Burn Playlist to Disc.

  • When opening the project at a new computer, the sound and picture doesn´t match

We are editing a documentary and when we open the project at a new computer the sound and clip doesn't match. We have noticed that the problem is that if we have a clip named 0001 on one SD card, it takes the sound from another SD card where the clip also is named 0001. Since we are working with a lot of material and this has happened on almost every one of them, its a huge problem, since we got no time to reimport and redo every clip. Thankful for your help.

Try batch renaming some of the files.

  • New chud tools 4.6.1 - confirmed working on MDD

    Hello everyone,
I would like to take this time to say that I am happy to report the success of installation of chud 4.6.1 on my MDD 2003 dual 1.25 system. As you all know only 3.5.2 was the last known working chud tools. It appears that the new version also has nap mode built in. No further need to select it anymore. Below is a pic of the new layout:
How do I insert a picture from grab to the forums? I would like to show that 4.6.1 works?
    Help.

    Hi TTabby-
    No worries....
Might want to have a look through This if you haven't already.
I do know that CHUD 4.5 Nap mode works automatically on my single processor machine.
Can't say about dual processor G4's.....
I will check further before I make any changes here, to my otherwise functioning-quite-well 3.5.2 Chud.
    Good idea.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

  • ITunes library on one computer - Play sound on another?

I'm needing to free up space on my MBPro and thought I'd move my library to my wife's MB since she has more hard drive space available. Then I thought I'd delete the library from my machine to free up that 20-25GB of space.
The only problem with that is now I can't listen to iTunes on my machine if I'm doing work and need some music. We have the machines on the same network (can connect to each machine from the other and move files).
Is there a good way for me to listen to my library that's on her machine from my machine? I'm thinking point my MBPro to the library on her machine, but I'm wondering if that will work with both machines connected to a Time Capsule via Wi-Fi. Is there some option to stream sound from a MB to a MBPro and just use my MBPro as remote speakers, so to speak?
Hope this includes all necessary details and makes sense.
    -John

Enable Music Sharing on your wife's computer. Open iTunes, select Preferences. Click on the Sharing icon at the top of the new window. Tick the boxes "Look for shared libraries" and "Share my library on my local network" -then click in the circle for "Share entire library".
Next, on your computer open iTunes, select Preferences, click on the Sharing icon, and check the box "Look for shared libraries".
For this to work, your wife's computer must be left on, and the iTunes application must be open. On your computer you open iTunes, and in the source window on the left part of your iTunes screen you will see your wife's library and playlists. Double-click on them to play. This will not cause the files to play on your wife's computer -only yours. If her computer is shut down or goes to sleep you will lose your access to the music.

  • Windows XP hard drive in a Windows Vista computer. No sound n

I bought a brand new computer that had Windows Vista installed on it. I
dont like Vista so I took the hard dri've out and replaced it with a brand
new hard dri've. I then loaded Windows XP Home onto the hard dri've.
Everything went perfectly fine EXCEPT there is no sound. I get an error
that says that I don't have a driver installed and gives me a (CODE 0)
error. Any advice on what to do now?

Ok first note, you should NEVER do what you did. Never take out the hard dri've just to get rid of an Os or program. there are much safer ways of installing Xp. You should have just formatted the HD and installed XP that way. Anyway, what you might be able to do is uninstall the drivers for Everything and reinstall them. The way you did it is flawed because the Hardware is still thinking its running on Vista and you pretty much confused it.

  • I deleted the sound card tool - How to get it back?

I used add/remove programs to free up some space and I think I deleted a program which effects sound in error.
Now my laptop keeps sending error message when i try to listen to music etc.
How can i get the sound to work on the laptop?
    Could anyone provide assistance?
I am only semi computer literate.

If this doesn't work, which I don't believe, you could install sound card driver manually.
All needed drivers and files can be found here: http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com (Support & Downloads)
Make sure you choose the right notebook type. Download drivers and install them.
After that, just reboot and sound should work like it was before.

Thank you for helping me to solve the above mentioned problem

Background, or "why this happens": the audio-out port on a modern Mac is digital and is held to high dimensional standards. Most headphones have an analog plug not made to such standards. The specific issue is the the "tip-to-stop shoulder" distance on many analog plugs is just a bit longer than on a digital one and jams the "mute" contact inside the port in the muted position. WZZZ's advice is exactly on target unless you are under warranty, which would still necessitate a trip to an Apple store for service.
The best action is prevention. When connecting headphones (or external speakers), put on the headphones and have an audio track running BEFORE you insert the plug. Insert the plug slowly, listening for sound on both channels and, when you hear it, STOP INSERTING.
Bottom line is you do NOT want to insert any random plug "to the hilt" until you know it is dimensioned to fit a digital port.
My MacBook Pro has the same jack. I have a pair of decent-quality, name-brand headphones and their plug is not to spec. This picture shows their plug in the port at a position that delivers proper sound and does not let the plug fall out:
Note that the shoulder is about 1/16-inch from contacting the computer case. It is secure in this position.
Every plug is different. I have a pair of El Cheapo external speakers I picked up for US$2 at a yard sale and their plug fits perfectly on my Macs with a digital audio port. Go figure!

Without stating the obvious, these are development tools for the processor, low level stuff so it is to be assumed you can't develop properly for a proc through emulation. Yes they are UniB.
