Computer not booting

I have an external drive that ceased working.
It was suggestd that I remove it from its case and connect it directly.
The only way I have of connecting it is in my old blue&white G3 mac.
I removed the 2nd drive and put in the external drive.
I changed the jumpers as noted on the drive to make it a slave with a main drive.
This was the way the G3 was set up orignally.
I couldn’t get the computer to boot, so I re installed the old drive.
Now, on start up, get a blinking Apple face and then a ?.
After about 10 seconds it begins to boot.
It goes thru loading eveything until it gets to “login window starting”.
This message stays on for over 15 minutes, and then it goes to a blue screen with nothing on it, and the cursor is frozen.
I’m fairly certain that I put both HDs back the way they were.
The IDE cable has 2 connectors, other then the one that connected to the mother board, is it important which goes to the main HD and which one goes to the slave drive?
Also, does this hold for the power cords?
Please advise.

Is holding down the shift key the way to boot from the CD drive, I don't really remember?
c key is for booting from a CD/DVD, Shift key is Safe Mode in OSX & Extension Manager in OS7-9
Strange, that no matter what changes I make on the computer it always looks for the startup drive before beginning to boot. Does this indicate anything?
Generally PRAM setting or PRAM battery...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
I can't find it now, but the B&Ws needed a Firmware update to run OSX beyond 10.2.x, but a moot point if this one ever did boot from 10.4
Do you think I should install OS 9.2 and see if that works?
Will it install over 10.4.10 that is already on the HD?
I think I'd try it, in theory it shouldn't overwrite OSX's files.
In the ulitilies folder there Drive Set Up, do you think that may be of any help?
That is what you'd use if you wanted to Erase & Install again.

  • HP G71 Notebook computer not booting Windows 7 asking for installation disc

Suddenly I was getting////// like this in the search window, tried to run Norton, it  seems to get stuck so I turned it off and then tried to restart, it made strange noise signal, beep..beep, which I never heard before  After repeated trials got into memory check message , and it went though and appeared fine, but still could not boot it, somehow got a message
that battery is  low needs to be changed, followed  HP instruction  from another computer to drain and replug, but  contine to get message that Windows failed to starte, the start program may have been changed, need to insert Windows Installation disc, which  I don't seem to have with me presently , probably misplaced,as the computer was bought some 10+ years ago.
What do I do, and how do I recover my documents, even if it is fixed. Appreciate any advise! Not very computer savy at age 79.

    Hi @Taslim,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
It is a wonderful  place to find answers and information!
For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I grasp that when you tried to start your notebook that Windows failed to start and prompted you  to insert an installation disk.  You tried doing a hard or forced reset but to no avail.  You do not  have your recovery CD/DVD disks to insert as computer is 10+ years old.
You can try doing a recovery without the disk. HP PCs - Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7)
The recovery process will present you with the opportunity to backup your personal files to prevent data loss so you will not need to worry about losing your information if you choose that option.

  • Blue Screen, computer not booting, please help!

Apologies if this question has been asked before, however I cannot see it anywhere.
I cannot get my computer to boot at all. When I turn my Macbook Pro on, it has the usual white screen with logo and underneath there is a loading bar. After around 5 mins when the bar is full, it changes to a blank blue screen and there's a circle that just spins round. This is as far as it gets. The blue screen remains.
I've tried carrying out some troubleshooting in the apple manual, I checked that it was a hardware issue but it said no issues found. I've tried to start the computer in safe mode (not sure why) but i'm at a loss.
I would appreciate anyones help if possible, I have only just had my iMac repaired and don't want to pay another small fortune sorting this one to.
    Many thanks

    Hey Princess,
Just went through this same scenario myself. I took it into the Genius Bar at a local Apple Store, and the only solution he knew of was to erase the hard drive (after determining that the hard drive wasn't indeed dying), then reinstall the OS, then for me to go home and update from my Time Capsule to replace files (which I hadn't backed up to for a couple of months *sad face*).
Anyhow - you may want to give the Genius Bar a try.
You could also start up from a DVD/OS to run any repairs using disk utility/First Aid to see if there might be some corrupt files that need replacing and see if that does it.
    Good luck!

  • Need Help... Computer NOT booting

    Hello,
I recently purchased Snow Leopard and tonight I tried to boot into 64 bit mode. Unfortunately, when I changed the com.apple.boot.plist to force boot it into 64 bit mode and restarted it does not get past the apple screen... any suggestions???
I am running a core 2 duo imac 24" screen, it was bought about a year ago and it is EFI 64... it is supposed to work no?

Why do you need to use the 64-bit kernel? What you did does not force the computer into "64-bit mode." The computer is always in 64-bit mode. What you did forces the system to boot into the 64-bit kernel. Except for unusual cases this is presently unnecessary. Any 32-bit extensions, plug-ins, etc. will not work with the 64-bit kernel. Your computer is not capable of using more RAM than supported by the 32-bit kernel.
If you boot from your SL DVD, select your language and click on the Continue button, wait for the menubar to appear then select Terminal from the Utilities folder. At the prompt enter:
    cd /
    sudo pico /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
Press RETURN after each line. If you're asked to enter your password enter your admin password which will not be echoed.
Pico is a simple text editor but you can use it to remove the boot flag line you inserted. When finished use CTRL-X. You will be prompted to Quit or Save and Quit. Choose the latter. Quit Terminal and restart the computer.

these should work but are not. please can someone help me

    Hello @moonlet,
I am sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with the memory upgrade.
Alright, here is what I would like you to do.  Remove any installed memory (original /default) memory. Then add the new memory to the laptop. Keep the other slot empty and see if it boots. If you have a second 4GB module then repeat the same process. Let me know the number of beeps you are hearing. I'm assuming that your laptop works fine with just the old memory, am I correct?
Also, you can confirm if the memory is defective or not using memtest86 (click here). Follow the instructions if you are to experiment with the memory tester.
I am hoping to hearing from you. Good luck. Aloha
    Best Regards,

  • OS clean install interupted on 2011 Macbook Pro G4. Now computer not booting up

I have a Mac Book Pro G4 (Early 2011) I was in the middle of doing a Yosemite clean install and I I took the memory stick out before the OS finished because I couldn't cancel and I thought it was hung-up. Now it doesn't power up. I get the attached message!
After this message it just restarts, then message appears after 8 secs or so then restarts again...  I have the Software Install and Restore disk. It came with two. I tried that but it doesn't automatically open anything. I also tried to open in Safe mode but I don't think it get far enough along to do that... Help!!!!

I had downloaded Yosemite onto my Imac, then followed the instructions to create bootable OS on memory stick, Did that then tried to load that on my Macbook. I then made the mistake of taking it out mid install i think. Now it does what I mentioned above. The computer has tried to reboot with the memory stick in so that doesn't work... ;(

  • Will not boot from CD/DVD drive even with "C" key pressed

I have a G4 with a hard drive that is (apparently) dead. I would like to boot off the CD drive, but that does not work. I press "C", then turn the power on, continue holding down the "C" key, and the hard drive just makes some clicking noises for about 20-30 seconds, then gives up. The computer will not boot at all. Same thing happens when holding down "Option" instead of "C"
Why would the computer not boot off the CD drive?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Computer will not boot up after recent software install

I recently tried to install a series of software updates. Not all were successful. Soon therafter the computer froze up while in safari. I turned it off and the computer would not boot up on restart, and instead sent me to the darwin login screen. I rebooted in safe mode per these forums, and turned off an itunes startup function, and then rebooted. That seemed to do the trick as I could now get back into the OS, but the computer was dreadfully slow. It froze up again in Safari and I turned it off again, and this time it would not go past the grey startup screen with the apple. I tried safe mode again, but the computer would shut down around 30 seconds after the wheel below the grey apple started turning. I Was able to get my Tiger Install DVD in the drive, and turned the computer back on, but now just get the grey apple screen and the wheel spinning indefinitely. I cannot do an erase and install because my photos are not backed up. Please help!
    Thanks

Hi, Deaton41. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "I recently tried to install a series of software updates. Not all were successful."I suspect the only way you are going to resolve this is by performing an Archive and Install. For important tips on this process, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order. If you follow my FAQ's steps to the letter, then your photos should be AOK, assuming directory corruption hasn't damaged them. I suspect directory corruption is the root cause of the unsuccessful software updates, which that then led to your current problem re: start up.
Before installing future software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
    Good luck!

  • Help needed on startup. My computer will not boot from the CD drive!!!

Problem with iMac G3 333, the Message on the screen states: "The System Software on the starup disk only functions on the media, not if copied to another drive." Like a fool, I copied the system folder from the original system software 9.2.2 on to the iMac. System disk which is not a complete system folder when used on the computer. I have searched the Internet, but can not find an answer. I have tried everything, holding down the C key, "Delete, Opition, Apple key, shift" holding the mouse down on startup, various combinations of other keys, etc. The CD starts to spin, but the computer switches to the hard drive and the message above returns. No matter what I try I still can't boot from the tray loading CD drive. Is there any Firmware code that I can use. I know how to access Firmware on the Imac and can boot the iMac using Firmware, but I don't know how to use Firmware to boot the CD drive which I need to do so I can reload the original software. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP? Thanks, Jim

Yes, I have tried both System Softwares a number of times. The C key will not boot up the CD drive and the harddrive always boots with the original message. I need to get the CD drive to boot so I can reloaded tge original software. Do you know anything about booting the CD drive using Firmware? Jim

  • Computer will not boot up.  I have tried running disk utility and re-installing OSX.  It says disk locked

I am new to Macs and have bought a 13" Macbook Pro and a IMac 21.5" 14 months ago.  I have only used the Macbook pro about 15-20 times and after upgrading to Maverick it will not boot up.  I get the white screen and a spinning circle.  I have tried Disk utility repair and even re-installing the OSX, but it says disk locked.  I do not recall setting any password protections or passwords.  I now have a brick with a lit up Apple logo.  If anyone knows how I can bypass the disk lock error or reset the laptop, please let me know.  This has not been a pleasant conversion from PC's.  Even my IMac blacks out from time to time and both happened right after my factory warranty expired.

The internal drive is malfunctioning. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

computer will not boot up, only rotating wheel. OS 10.7, iMac

  • Blue screen, computer will not boot up

My computer, when powered up gets stuck on a blue screen and will not boot up. I have restarted & held down the shift button for safe mode & it goes to a white screen with a grey apple icon but will not move past this screen. How do I get the computer to boot up?

Sounds like your system is hosed. Try [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. Of course, from the sounds of it, even if you get the drive repaired, it may not fix the problems with your system.
Do you have backups? If not, your only priority at the moment should be to figure out how to back up your data, or what data may still be intact if your drive is badly damaged. If you have another Mac, the easiest way to do this will be to boot the machine into [FireWire target mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] and copy whatever data you can.

  • Computer will not boot up but fan will turn on and stay on.

I have a Gateway and I did not have enough memory.  I bought 1Gig to give it enough memory to run the basic systems.  I added the memory to the slot in the hard drive and now it will not boot up.  The fan just turns on and runs.  I took out the new memory and it does the same thing.  No working computer.  Need help on what I should do besides Punt.
    Thanks,
    ZCDJSouza

First and foremost, recheck all internal connections to make sure you didn't bump something loose while replacing the RAM. I had the exact same thing happen to me once before only to find that I had accidentally loosened the cable to the hard drive.
