Computer problems after upgrading to Mavericks

SO many problems. I cleared out a ton of old stuff that I saw might be causing problems, and I've verified and repaired the disc, and uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of programs that I was seeing problems with in the console, but now I'm just flummoxed. It's behaving better than it was earlier, and isn't giving me the beach ball nearly so often, but it still seems like it's taking too long for a lot of things. I just reinstalled Avast and am currently letting a game update through Steam. I have the console and the activity monitor open to one side. Since I opened the console, it's been spitting out one or two messages every second, and all I can find through some internet searching is that it's something to do with the wireless connection. There's some other stuff periodically mixed in that doesn't sound good either, involving either sandboxd or mdworker. But for the most part it's along these lines:

I just reinstalled Avast
"Avast" is perhaps the worst of the whole wretched lot of commercial "security" products for the Mac. It's worse than the imaginary "viruses" you were worried about when you installed it. Not only does it fail to protect you, it throws false warnings, destabilizes and slows down your computer, and sometimes or always corrupts the network settings and the permissions of files in your home folder. Removing it may not repair all the damage, and neither will Disk Utility or even reinstalling OS X.
Back up all data, then remove "Avast" according to the developer's instructions. Reboot.
If you tried to remove Avast by dragging an application to the Trash, you'll have to reinstall it and follow the instructions linked above.
If you still have problems after following those instructions, post again.

    Hi cpuman8,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're not able to log in to your user account after upgrading, try resetting your password using the method in this article:
Resetting the original administrator account password
In OS X Lion or later, you can reset your user password with your Apple ID.

  • USB Speaker/LED Cinema Display Problems After Upgrade to Mavericks

I just upgraded to Mavericks this morning.  My set-up includes a new (Late 2013) 27" iMac and a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display, with the mini display port and USB connected from the display to the iMac.
I have a set of Bose USB speakers that I had plugged into the USB port on the Cinema Display for audio.  I didn't want to waste one of the USB 3 ports on the iMac so instead was using a USB 2 port on the Cinema Display.  This worked fine before upgrading to Mavericks.
Now with Mavericks installed, if I have the speakers plugged in, I get a tone that sounds like very loud feedback.  If I plug the USB speakers into one of the USB 3 ports on the iMac however, it works fine.
Does anyone know if this is a known issue with Mavericks?  I've read some other posts about display issues, but they were referencing USB displays.  In this case the display is connected via mini displayport, but the USB connection on the display seems to be causing issues.
    Anyone else experienced this?

I've been experiencing additional issues with USB speakers. I plugged them into a USB port on the iMac itself (as opposed to the LED Cinema Display) and the feedback was gone.  However, now I get situations where the audio appears to randomly "die" on the system.  If I go into Audio preferences and switch the audio output to the internal speakers, the audio comes back on.  If I then switch it back to the USB speakers, it continues to work until it randomly dies again.  This happens typically 3-5 times a day.
If I just use the internal speakers as the audio output, I don't get any issues with losing the audio.  The USB speakers worked fine on the iMac before upgrading to Mavericks, and still work fine on my late 2011 MBP still running 10.8.5.
I've read about other similar issues (http://www.imore.com/losing-audio-os-x-mavericks-heres-what-you-can-do-about-it). Still waiting for a fix.

  • Serial number problem after upgrade to Mavericks

My old CS5 Photoshop v. 12.0.4 works fine in an old Mac computer with OSX Snow Leopard, but after transfer to a new Mac with OSX Mavericks whenever I try to open Photoshop it asks for a serial number I no longer have. Bought Photoshop years ago, never registered it because I only had dialup internet in those days (and my rural DSL line still crawls at 1.5 speed), install discs and box are nowhere to be found and I don't want to upgrade to a newer version. Just want to use my old Photoshop like I did before, without Cloud or any other nonsense. Can I I get a new serial number or how do I activate it?

If you lost your serial number, your proof of purchase and also failed to register your product, there's not a lot we can do for you. Sorry.
If, however, you lost your serial # but have the product installed and activated using a genuine serial # you can launch Photoshop and select Help>Product Registration... to register the serial # with your Adobe ID. You can then log into your Adobe account on Adobe.com to retrieve your serial #. (Note: It takes about 5-10 minutes for the serial to show up in your My Products of your Adobe account when you register this way)
    http://www.adobe.com/support/registration.html
Other purchased products: From within your product, choose Help > Product Registration. (You don’t need to have your serial number when you use this option.)

  • Thunderbolt Display has issue with weird washed-out colors after waking from sleep (after upgrade to Mavericks)

I've got a Thunderbolt Display that I use with my Macbook Air (mid 2012) - usually in clamshell mode.
When I let the computer go to sleep, and then wake it up by clicking the mouse, the monitor turns back on but the colors are washed out and purple looking.
The display goes back to normal when I unplug and replug it to my laptop.
I first noticed this problem after upgrading to Mavericks.
I made a video demonstrating the issue here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19179-MVpWA&feature=youtu.be
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Will

Same thing for me too.  Late 2012 13" MBP Retina.  I have to unplug the Thunderbolt cable and plug it back in.
This has only started for me in the last two days.  The first two weeks of Mavericks was ok.
Update:  I just got back from a trip.  I was using the laptop separate from the Thunderbolt display.  I hadn't restarted since I returned and connected the monitor.  I've just rebooted, and put the computer to sleep.  After resuming from sleep, the display is ok.  Maybe try rebooting?  I'll update if it continues.

  • Wifi problem with Mac after upgrade to Mavericks

I just upgraded to Mavericks but something wrong with my wifi.
i can get internet through LAN link from Airport but not through wifi even i can receive an IP address
i tried connect to hotspot with my iphone5s and it works.
Other devices can use wifi just fine through Airport, just not my Mac using Mavericks
    In conclusion,
Airport should be fine because my other devices works.
Mac wifi should be fine too because i can connect using hotspot.
so why it's not working when i connect Mac to Airport?

I was having problems connecting to Wifi with my Macbook Pro (!2010), after upgrading to Mavericks. I was on the phone repeateadly with AT&T because I have Uverse. Testing everything (channels, signal strength) and had techs come out to check the line, ports, switches, etc. When I hardwired the Mac into the Uverse router, it worked fine. This rulled out any problems with the line in.
I considered getting a repeater but then I read that repeaters are not really good and it is better to reconfigure a router to act as an access point on the network. Plunked down about $80 for a Belkin AC750 router at Best Buy. In the setup it has an option to set it up as an access point only. Clicked that, connected it to my Motorola NVG510 Uverse modem and then connected to the Belkin router from my Mac. Voila!  It's been a solid 11+ Mbs ever since (my plan maxes at 12Mbs). Connection is still solid and life if good even though it ***** to plunk down another $80 for a second router. But it was worth it just to get rid of the headaches.
I think the wifi capabilities of the Motorola NVG510 modem are the cause of a lot of problems with AT&T Uverse issues, particularly for Mac owners. I think it was also causing my Airport Expresses to drop occasionally.... Few minutes of music then drop... music drop.... All gone now.
I don't know if you are on Uverse but if so, I highly recommend configuring a second router as an acces point (it can be any old router you still might have - the setup is just a bit trickier because you have to do it manually).
    Good luck.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks, my computer no longer recognizes my ipod.

After upgrading to Mavericks, my computer no longer recognizes my ipod. Screen lights up when it's plugged in, but it doesn't get to the "connected" state and it doesn't show up on my computer, in the /Volumes folder or in iTunes. This has only started happening after I upgraded to Mavericks.

I should also note, that I have restarted my computer and ipod multiple times and have attempted restarting the SMC on my mac, as per
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    all with no luck.
Also, I have updated to the most recent version of iTunes and have checked that the USB ports are being read correctly through the System Profiler. I have also plugged the ipod into the same ports that worked with my keyboard and mouse, with no different results.

  • Running the latest OS Mavericks.  8 gigs of RAM.  150 gigs free space on computer.  Problem: since upgrading to Maverick almost all applications are slow to open, and frequently many 'spinning ball' interruptions.  Repaired disk permissions - no help.

I'm running the latest OS 10.9.1 Mavericks (late 2009 iMac).  8 gigs of RAM.  150 gigs free space on computer.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, apps are slow to open, with frequent "spinning ball" interruptions.  Repaired Disk Permissions - no help.  Repaired disk - no problems indicated.  Did notice in going to Utilities/Console that there are 4000 messages over a 3 day period.  Any suggesstions how to correct this sudden slow down, other than psychiatric help?

Yes.  Many messages show up when I try to use Office for Mac 08.  Here's a sample (and one that repeats over and over again):
2/11/14 1:01:16.577 PM Microsoft Word[1912]: OTAtomicAdd32 is deprecated and will be removed soon.  Please stop using it.
Also getting many msgs when I use Chrome.

  • Problems with passwords after upgrade to Mavericks

    Hi,
After upgrading to Mavericks I have problems with passwords. MacOS allows me to log in with my password but when I want to install software it does not accept my password. I can go to the user tab in system preferences and change my passwort there. With the new password it works, but when I change to the old password, I have the same problems. Strange ...
    Thanks for help

OK. I found the problem (probably it is not related to the upgrade): When I install an application and the installation procedure asked me for a password it switched the keybord driver to a language I only use infrequently. Since my original password contained special characters the change of the keyboard driver was the cause for my typing in a wrong password. When I tried changing the password I used "abc" and this worked since it did not contain any special characters. So everything explained and a bug for Apple to fix.

  • Problems receiving mail from exchange after upgrading to Mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks I am having issues receiving e-mail. Activity doctor says I am connected to Exchange server but Mail.app won't donwload e-mail. I have heard this is an issue on OS X Mavericks. Any idea on how to solve this?

I solved the problem by disabling all Internet Accounts in the System Preference and re-enabling them one by one.  I found that a few settings crashed the Mail app., mainly for those Microsoft Exchange accounts.  I deleted them and set them up again then it works fine now.  No more crash when I open the Mail app.  Hope this procedure helps those with similar problems, too.

  • Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

I understand it says my RAM is way too low, but hve no idea what's killing it. So far I've disabled and uninstalled all DynDNS items. I just read about Chrome's slow performance for MBP's and plan to switch back to Safari (Firefox made my computer even slower).
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.
    Oscar.

Thank you Kappy, while I was reviewing the log from EtreCheck I noticed the 3rd party preference panes, launchers and daemos. I deleted a few of them and it really helped with system performance. Reading your reply confirms that what I did was the right thing; here is an updated log from EtreCheck:

I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.
