Computer randomly locks up when firewire drives are connected?

Here's what I have:
- 2011 27" iMac i7
- 2011 15" MacBook Pro i7
I recently replaced all of my USB hard drives with Firewire drives, mostly as a speed and simplification measure. Under USB, I had to have a series of hubs which seemed to slow things down pretty dramatically, as well as cause a lot of weird behavior, like randomly ejecting. And, of course, there was the inevitable birds nest of wires. So, since there was no way to add USB ports to the iMac, except for hubs, I decided to move FireWire and daisy chain them.
This was all connected to a dedicated iMac workstation, the MacBook was never connected to the drives.
The drives were added a few days before a complete system overhaul was done. The system had been acting funny. We're little things here and there (finder often had to be relaunched after a restart, wifi was not able to automatically connect, etc.), and the system was starting to lock up on a somewhat regular basis. So, Lion was installed fresh and nothing was restored from Time Machine except for a few applications here and there (nothing system related). Once the system was all freshly installed, the little quirks were gone, but the random locking up was not. And it was getting worse.
So, I did some of the trouble shooting I had done in the past; created a new user, repaired permissions, repaired the disk, etc. It wasn't fixing anything, just getting worse. I finally did an extended Apple Hardware Test and got the error: 4M0T/4/40000003: HDD-1285
I couldn't find anything on the web about it. So I called AppleCare, they didn't know what it was either. So I took the computer into the Apple Store. They eventually got back to me saying the hard drive and the fan had failed and that they were in the process of fixing it.
However, in the mean time, I moved the MacBook Pro over to the workstation where the iMac had been. Low and behold, within a few hours, I was seeing exactly the same symptoms I'd seen on the iMac. If the Firewire drives were plugged in, the computer would randomly lock up, and again, not even necessarily when the drives were reading or writing. It appears to be completely random. Sometimes specific applications will lock up, like Mail, VLC or System Preferences. Force quitting the application has no effect. The window won't disappear, even if I attempt to log out or shut the computer down. The screen will change to the grey background, but the window will never go away. It'll just sit there with the pin wheel forever. The only option at this point is to force the system to shut down with the power button.
This only happens when Firewire is connected.
I've tried swapping out the cable with no luck, the same problem is true. I have five drives daisy chained like this:
WD MyBook 2TB --> WD MyBook 2TB --> WD MyBook 2TB --> LaCie d2 Quadra v3 2TB --> LaCie d2 Quadra v3 2TB
Now, admittedly, I have never daisy chained, so I don't know if I've made some bad mojo for myself by my device order, or by mixing brands or something, or if it's even possible that maybe one of the drives is faulty and it's screwing things up for me. I just don't know, and troubleshooting is challenging becuase I can't make the problem happen, it just happenes whenever it feels like it.
I have to get this issue resolved. I could switch back to USB, but I'd hate to do that because I spent a substantial amount of money on the drives specifically to avoid using USB
Insight into this would really be appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem. Th eone difference is that on occasion, iTunes downloads my playlists yet not the associated songs in the playlist.

  • Crashes when Firewire Drives are mounted

For some reason now Logic crashes (hangs...not responding) when i boot Logic with my one firewire drive mounted. When i unmount the drive and then boot Logic it works fine. THen i re mount it and open my project.
Is there a fix for this?

Here's what I think is going on...
    You wrote:

Logic keeps a file (somewhere) that remembers the most recently opened songs/projects. I think this file is corrupt. I have no idea what the file is called, where it's located, but I think it's corrupt. Bascially, when you launch Logic but the drive to which a recent song isn't mounted/not available, that song will disappear from Logic's recent song list. But I have the feeling that Logic hasn't totally forgotten about the existence of that song. So when the drive is mounted and Logic loads up, it might just be trying to find the drive where the song lives but something gets screwy in the process.
    Here's what I suggest:
    a) quit Logic if it's running
    b) mount the drive
    c) copy the entire project to your internal HD
    d) launch Logic
    e) open the song from your HD
    f) if this works without crashing, re-save the project to your FW drive under a new name
    g) go to Logic's recent song list and count the number of songs in the list. Let's say it's 20 songs in the list...
    h) hold option for one second and create a NEW song (this will be Logic's "default" song)
    i) save it to your FW drive as a simple song (not project) called "a"
    j) now save it 20 more times, changing the name each time, i.e., "b", "c", etc. What you're attempting to do is completely clear Logic's recent song list of all previous song titles with something known to be "benign"
    k) re-load your real song as saved to your FW drive in step F above
    l) if this works, quit Logic without saving
    m) re-boot the computer
    n) make sure the FW drive is mounted
    o) launch Logic and load the song from step F from the FW drive
If all that works, then I think my theory is right about the recent file list being corrupt.
If it doesn't work, well, [Elmer Fudd = ON] I twied and I twied...

  • [Solved] Wierd boot order when external drives are connected

So, I've got two external drives, an ntfs drive and ext4 drive. After a recent upgrade, I get this error message when starting up the computer with them connected.
    Bootloader: syslinux.
    For the ntfs drive:
    ::performing fsck on '/dev/sda1'
    fsck: fsck.ntfs: not found
fsck: error 2 while executing fsck.ntfs for /dev/sda1
    ERROR: fsck failed on '/dev/sda1'
    ::mounting '/dev/sda1' on real boot
    mount: unknown filesytem type 'ntfs'
For the ext4 drive (Megadrive is the name of the hard drive):
    ::performing fsck on '/dev/sda1'
Megadrive: clean, 230913/188148544 files, 193365856/732566385 blocks
ERROR: Root device mounted successfully, but /sbin/init does not exist. Bailing out, you are your own. Good luck.
With both of them connected, it gives the same message as for when the ext4 external is connected. When they are both disconnected, it finds the proper drive that I recorded in syslinux.cfg file.
What could be causing this? If someone could point me in the direction of how to troubleshoot this, that would be a great help?

  • My computer will not recognize external firewire drives...very mysterious.

I'm an editor with two 250GB d2 Lacie's and am going crazy over this problem. I've heard plenty about the notorius Lacie issues, mainly involving mounting refusals or even one last week about my friend's bursting into flames. But this one I cannot find the answer to anywhere online and I've been searching all week.
My computer suddenly does not recognize my drives are connected. They are not listed at all in Disk Utility. I tried repairing disk permissions, I tried repairing the volume with Disk Worrier. I tried unplugging everything and resetting and zapping the P-RAM, and every combination of all that. No dice. I tried booting off of CD-ROM. When I plug them in, I hear them power up and run what sounds like smoothly. I tried another friend's Lacie and it acted the same way. I tried both 400 and 800 firewire ports with various cables.
What's going on here? Years worth of editing are on those drives! S.O.S.

it is hard to say what's happening there. have you tried resetting the pmu? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449.

  • Firewire drives are locked in custom mode

I did and archive and reinstall on my notebook hard drive and after completing it all my external firewire drives are locked and in custom mode. I am unable to change them to read/write. I can unlock the drives, but appears that it has no effect. When I try to access the drives it tells me I have insufficient privileges. I have run apple disk utility and disk warrior on permissions with no success.

I just had a client who encountered this. What causes it and is there a simpler way to resolve it?
My client had 6 drives that had all their permissions set to custom and they were all in a locked state.
How is that even possible at all and why doesn't the permissions routine in Drive Utility solve it?
This was a seriously frightening ordeal and had I not found this thread all the data on those drives might have been lost.
    Does anyone have any explanations?
As for the above fixes, I was able to utilize the terminal to solve the issue but not with any ease. I had to attempt it numerous times per drive and after about 20 to 30 attempts, I was able to finally get them all unlocked.

    kaeandcolesmon,
If you open the recovery drive (partition) it should only have a single folder (Recovery).
To make sure that your not saving restore points to that drive.
    See:
Start, Control Panel, System, System Protection tab. Make sure the D drive partition is set to OFF so that it does not save there.

  • WRT160n v3 has slow connection when multiple users are connected

As of last night my router has been producing slow connectivity when multiple users are connected to it, but it's perfectly fine when only one user is connected.
I am on a laptop myself, but we also have a second laptop and a desktop where the modem and router are set up.
I have upgraded the firmware so that is up to date.
We have Comcast Fiber Optics so my internet speed is normally quite fast even when all of my computers are connected.
Some settings that I have that might help resolve the issue:
    I am using DHCP Configuration.
My Channel Width is set to 20 MHz and I am using Channel 11.
The Security Mode is set to WPA Personal. I had it on WPA2 Personal but I read that changing to WPA Personal might help and so far it doesn't seem to have done anything.
I set the Beacon Interval to 50, Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, and RTS Threshold to 2304.
Everything else is set to the default factory configuration.
Just today I received a notice that said "Windows has detected an IP Address Conflict", but ever since I reinstalled the Firmware it hasn't come back. I've rebooted both my laptop and the desktop to confirm it hasn't come back as well.
I consider myself to be computer savy, but I just can't figure out what the problem is as I've tried everything that I could think of including reconfiguring my router and restarting my modem as well. This problem has presented itself in the past before but unfortunately I cannot remember what I did to fix it.

Try using inSSIDer to help you find the best channel.

If that doesn't help, you can try disabling WMM.
Edit:  You should use WPA2 AES security for best performance.

I have a IPhone 5 and Iphone 5s, each phone is activited with a different service provider. Both are set up with the same account ID and running IOS 8.0.2. When the phones are connected to the same Wifi at home, both phones will ring when someone call in to one of the phone.  Hence you do not know exactly which line the caller called.  If you answered using the wrong phone, then anyone calling the other number will not get through.  Anyway to solve this problem?

    Hey David Koh TP,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like your devices are set up to use continuity together. Specifically, it sounds like you are signed into the same Apple ID in FaceTime, and have iPhone Cellular Calls enabled. To resolve your issue, simply disable this setting:
Connect your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch using Continuity
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6337
    Turn off iPhone cellular calls
To turn off iPhone Cellular Calls on a device, go to Settings > FaceTime and turn off iPhone Cellular Calls.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • My IPod Touch Stucks when the headphones are connected

    Hi,
My Ipod Touch 2G (2.2) stucks after few minutes when the headphones are connected (genuines APPLE or genuines for Iphone + Mic).
When I listen the music, after few minutes the song stops and the apple appears on the screen.
Do you have an idea of what's wrong ?
    Best regards

I think I fix the problem.
It wasn't besause of the headphones but the two small magnets there was on the cover of the leather case.
I removed them and the Ipod seems to work fine now ... I test again ...
    Any other victims ?????

  • Firewire drives are un-mounting

I have a fall 2008 imac - running 10.6.3, have two external firewire drives from g-technology.
all of my data is on the external firewire drives (itunes, documents and photos). the problem is that for the last three weeks - the drives have been un-mouting randomly
I have reviewed the console logs, reset the PR-RAM and no luck. Anyone have any suggestions on how i can research the root cause?

Just a very basic idea. Are your Firewire cables in good shape? Connections OK? Has your power supply been stable lately (any brownouts, etc)? Have you recently done any updates or software installs on your iMac?
    Regards,
    Steve M.

  • K9A Platinum locks up when USB ports are used

When I plug my external harddrive or zune into a USB port in the back my computer will lock up and I have to do a hard restart. The front USB ports won't even work. I'm running vista ultimate just in case that info helps.

    Read Moan Guide 1st.
    Does it work in XP?
Look here how to fix front USB connectors: If you are having problems with USB ports, read this topic.

  • Has anyone got iSight working when a firewire drive is connected?

I have tried numerous drives but they all stop iSight working. For sure I would not have bought it had I known this. It will work if I disconnect all drives. Irony is that the internal is so slow that I run off a firewire.

I have had problems with connecting an external firewire hard drive and isight camera at the same time. I have problems copying or reading files off my hard drive when my isight camera is connected at the same time. Just the other day, I forgot to disconnect my isight camera when I hooked up my external hard drive to view some old family photos that I scanned in and saved to that hard drive months ago. I kept getting a message that the files could not be read and had an error message. I thought that I had lost all the photos or had not scanned them properly or that my hard drive was going bad. Luckily I remembered that there is a firewire problem when my isight is connected and I disconnected the camera and was able to open the files. It would be nice if Apple could address this problem. I also have problems copying files to my idisk on occassion when my isight camera is connected. It tends to be slow and sometimes the wheel spins for a very long time. Also have noticed that when I copy large number of files at one time to a CD that things seem to never work right. I have learned to copy files in smaller lots and this seems to help.
I love my isight camera and it is so much better than my ibot camera, but wish they could fix the issues with the firewire.

  • Whole computer slows down drastically when network drive is mounted

Firstly, I hope I'm asking this in the right place. I'm using a MacBook with a Time Capsule and a 1.5TB USB drive attached to the Time Capsule as a wireless network drive. Whenever the network drive is connected, my whole computer runs intolerably slowly. Even if no program is actually using files from the network drive and the drive itself is silent and unused, my computer still crawls along agonizingly slowly. Yet if I plug the drive directly into the MacBook there's no problem whatsoever.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on and how I can cure the problem?
    In case it counts:
    MacBook: running OS 10.6.5, 2.2GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Network: 802.11n, WPA2 Personal.
Hard Disk: LaCie, 1.5TB USB 2.0
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Thanks. Away on holiday right now, but will do it as soon as I get back next week.
Out of curiosity, the external drive works fine when connected directly via USB to the laptop. I took that to mean that the problem wasn't to do with the drive, but probably the network. Is it possible there could be a problem with the drive which only shows up when it's used as a network drive?

  • PremiereCS3 won't start when firewire drive is removed

I've had to remove a Lacie firewire drive to reformat it on another system but now Premiere will only flash the loading screen and then dump out (no error messages, just shuts down) when I try to start it. Is there a way to start up Premiere to get some work done while this drive reformats?
BTW this drive was not used to store any media.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Files locked when Windows clients are connected to ML Server via smb

    Hi,
I've got a problem with windows 7 clients that are connected to my MacMini Server.
When they open files on a shared folder, and modify them, files are locked when they try to save them.
I think it might be the op-lock option present in older versions of Mac OS X Server that can be involved, but it disapeared in Lion and older version of OS X Server.
Does someone knows how to activate/deactivate this option, or does someone already got this problem?
    Server is a MacMini with 10.8.5 + Server 2.2.2
    Clients are Windows 7
Thank a lot for your answers
    Bertrand.

Officially, Adobe does not support opening or saving files to a server --- because so many different things can go wrong with networking.
The permissions error means that the file/directory permissions are incorrect on the file server, or that the OS or server is incorrectly reporting file/directory permissions.
Photoshop does more error checking than most applications, because we have seen so many problems in the past, and don't like applications silently losing or damaging files (which we see in other applications).
