Computer won't boot at all after 10.5.7 update

After installing the 10.5.7 update, and having it hang on the blue screen (as plenty of others did), my mini will not boot past the grey apple logo screen.
I have tried rebooting several times as this seemed to help some others, as well as holding down the Shift key to boot in safe mode, all to no avail.
I inserted the OS X install disk, and ran disk and permissions repair multiple times, also to no avail.
What should I do to get OS X up and running again?
Cheers.

Thanks for the tip. I posted a new question under "deciphering panic log" as well. Here's what I found:

  • Computer won't boot at all-no fan noise or screen

My mac recently shut itself off and refused to start up again. It had been giving me problems prior to this-I would boot up and the monitor wouldn't display, even though I could here programs starting and whatnot. Occasionally it would boot and not display the menu bar on the top of the screen. I was crossing my fingers and hoping it wasn't anything too bad.
But now it's broke. When I hold down the power button, the white LED lights up, as well as some red light in the machine itself. There's a CLICK-CLICK noise when I press the button, and after the second click, the red light goes out. When I lift my finger, the white light goes out.
I'd love to run the Hardware Test, but how do you get the CD tray open with the machine off?
I've tried to look the problem up, but most of the help seems to involve actually having your computer turn on at least halfway.

    Hi Para_chan;
From the sound of your problems, it sounds like the power supply has quit but that is only a guess at this point. Since you are unable to get it to turn on you will probably have to take it into the Apple Store where they have more resource to figure out what is wrong with it.

  • Added new memory, now computer won't boot at all

    Hello
I added a new pair of 2*8GB Coursair memory along with my old memory which was 2*2GB, for a total of 20GB Ram. It was working fine for a day (except one random restart), but got steadily worse. Yesterday iMac was shutting and restarting more frequently. I decided to remove the old pair thinking the   different brands may be causing a disturbance. I did, but the restarting didn't stop. I removed them again to try put it back more firmly or something, that was the last time my iMac booted. It will show the apple logo, then some short loading bar will come up, then it would promprtly shut down.
I tried putting back my original RAM and it still wouldn't boot. Tried them individually, new old, different slots, nothing worked.
So I guess I damaged my memory slots or all my RAM modules stopped working. Any ideas what to do next? I've already requested a replacement for the new RAM.
    Some extra info:
-Old ram was running at 1333Hz and new one was 1666Hz, I tried them together .
-First time I tried to remove RAM, I tried to pluck them out with my hands by leveraging the sides with a small screw driver. Realised I had to pull the black thing later on. Don't think I applied too much force though.

Well, you should not mix different specs RAM. And, it's best to purchase RAM for the very finicky Macs from either OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial which guarantee the RAM to be Mac compatible and offer a lifetime warranty.
I would guess that the new incorrect spec RAM is the problem. Additionally, you might have damaged the slots inadvertantly.
You might need to take it to your nearest Genius Bar for a free evaluation. Additionally, I would return the RAM as not being compatible.

  • Computer won't boot first time after being powered down.

I just had my motherboard seviced because I needed the BIOS reprogrammed and MSI sent me a different board.  If my computer sits in the off position for awhile....  Upon power up, the computer will freeze at the logo screen.  If I push the reset button, it will boot up just fine.  I have not tried to disable the logo screen, but does anyone have any ideas?  Overall, I have not been happy with MSI or my 3rd "platinum" board.

Well, I did not have the problem before they sent me a different board and my PSU is definitely not the problem.

  • Mini G4 Won't Boot off External after 10.4.9 Update

I've tried three times to install the update and boot off my external hard drive connected to my MacMini G4. Tried the usual stuff like using Combo update, reparing permissions, reset NVRAM, safe boot, single-user login, etc. After it updates successfully, the machine reboots and after a few seconds, the "broken folder" or prohibitory sign appears. The little progress indicator continues to spin, but I have to restart off the internal drive to boot up. Once booted, the external has to be turned off and on so that it will appear on the desktop.
Never a problem with earlier updates. Back to 10.4.8 I go....

    Howard:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try booting from the install disk and running Repair Disk in Disk Utility. Here's how:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Good luck.

  • PT880 Neo - Won't Boot at all

    Help me anyone!
My computer won't boot at all. I recently put it together and the bios works all the way to the Boot-start (accordingly to D-bracket) but nothing happends after that. The bios recognices the SATA, floppy, DVD and the CDrom (all at once or one by one - standalone). I'am trying to install Windows XP Prof sp1a.
    - I've tried with full system (SATA, DVD, CDrom and Floppy).
    - I've tried with only the DVD (disabled SATA).
    - I've tried with only the CDrom (disabled SATA).
    - I've even tried with only the floppy (windows 98 start floppy).
    - I've tried two different Win XP prof disc's.
    - I've tried with or without PATA-IDE and SATA and all the possible
       combination of them.
Since the computer won't read from the DVD, CDrom or the floppy I can't
flash the bios or install the RAID-driver from the floppy. After reading about the +12 Amp in this forum I changed PSU to Aspire but it didn't help. I really need help from you all because I'm so tired of trying now and I GOT THREE SIMILAR COMPUTERS ACTING THIS WAY ON MY KITCHENTABLE right now (for me and for two friends). I can't bellieve I was so unlucky as to receive 3 MoBo's that won't work so It has to be something else. One strange thing though - The press F11 for BOOT meny (boot order) doesn't work at all - otherwise the Bios seems to work as it should.
    Best regards
    Lars

I've got the same problem with a P4 3.2E.  At times I get into "Windows loading" before rebooting, other times it freezes at a black screen just past POST (with a blinking cursor in upper left-hand corner).  One time I actually got to desktop and just as icons were appearing, it rebooted.  It really seems memory related to me.  Running PC4200, I set all timings as loose as possible, make sure there was enough voltage going everywhere, but still no success.  I'm going to try swapping in my 2.8C northy to flash to BIOS 1.4, and I PM'ed NovJoe for that beta...hoping he'll be kind enough to shoot it to me.  This is just a backup board while I prepare my IC7 for thermo electric cooling, and while I am impressed with all the options and voltage ranges in BIOS (from an extreme OC'ing standpoint), I'm not too impressed with this supposedly "Prescott Ready" board so far.  Hoping I can get this thing solved tonight, cuz I lost out on a night of gaming last night.

  • Computer won't boot up after installing SIIG card

    Hey Everyone,
I having problems with my SIIG FireWire 2-Port PCIe DV card that I've installed into my PowerMac G5 Quad. With the card installed the computer will not boot up, which is the same thing that happened with my previous two models of the card. I installed a new card yesterday and it worked fine all day, but after shutting the computer down for the night and then restarting it in the morning I am experiencing the same problems. The light on the front of the computer turns on, but the screen does not, and after about a minute a loud fan noise comes one. I have the card installed in Slot 2. In Slot 1 I have a ProTools HD card and in Slot 3 I have an AJA Kona LHE card. Even with all of the cards removed the computer still does not boot up. Anyone seen this problem before? Any help or information anybody can offer would be greatly appreciated.
    PowerMac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, I had the same problem with my dual core G5.
I installed the card and my computer won't boot up. The screen stays gray and the fan keeps spinning.
I contacted SIIG and they said the card is defective, which, I doubt it is.
I then returned it for a refund.

  • Computer won't boot after installing MFP M127FW

My computer won't boot to my hard drive after installing my new MFP M127FW printer unless I first unplug the USB cable from the printer and then turn on the computer.  My BIOS is set to boot from my hard drive, not from a USB drive, so what did the installation of the MFP M127FW drivers and software do to my computer?  I assume this has something to do with the Smart Install feature.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi @frcraig ,
I see that you are experiencing issues with the computer booting up when the printer is connected by the USB cable.
I would like to help you out with this issue today.
Most likely it is the Smart Install on the printer causing this. The printer looks like a disk drive.
On the printer, touch Setup, Service, Smart Install and turn it off.
If you are still having issues, in the system BIOS, disable the Boot from USB device option and the USB Legacy Support option. Doing this will allow the PC to complete the boot process to the internal hard drive and allow you to enter Windows. If this does not work for any reason, you should boot your PC before connecting the USB drive. Once the computer is fully booted into Windows, connect the USB drive and wait for the operating system to detect the drive.
Important: Do not disable the USB Legacy Support if you are using a USB Keyboard. Doing so will prevent you from being able to use the keyboard during the booting sequence.
What kind of computer do you have?
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a great day!

  • Macbook pro won't boot, or crashes after boot

My 2009 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.5 either has difficulty starting up, or after start up, it crashes. However, it seems to only crash when attempting to stream video from any web browser I've tried using (Firefox & Safari, (Chrome not supported by 10.5)).
When the computer starts up successfully, all seems ok until I try streaming video, usually from YouTube or similar. Then after about 2 minutes of it playing the video, the screen will freeze, audio will continue, and then the screen flashes wildly like a strobe light, or sometimes a checkered/plaid-like pattern appears on the screen in weird reds and blues.
When the computer does not boot at all, it will either appear to be booting, then freeze on the blue screen. Or as soon as I power up, I'll get the grey screen but it will have the checkered/plaid-like pattern on it, and it will stay there forever until I hold the power to turn it off.
Most of the time booting in safe mode will be successful, and from there I will run Disk Utility, my hard drive appears OK, but I have to repair disk permissions a few times before it says everything is OK. Sometimes attempting to boot in safe mode is not successful, so I will boot in Single User mode and run fsck -fy code until I get the "OK" message.
I'm out of ideas, and the problem doesn't seem to be going away. Do I need to erase the disk and reinstall OS X or  update to a newer version of OS X?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds a bit like a heat issue.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Sadly, it also sounds like this, which doesn't cover the 2009 MBP...

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last crash  & the Startup right after that for clues.
Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v

  • Won't boot at all... [will not POST]

Greets. My order from newegg just came in today and i'm quite happy with the "big" things i got-
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (link)
    MSI K8N Neo4-F (link)
Now, I'm not totally oblivious with the whole computer situation, after all, I was brave enough to build this, right? 8) The problem I am having lies in the fact that the computer just won't boot at all. Eventually I turned on that D-Bracket into JDB1. So far it has got Yellow and Red LEDs which stay on. The book tells me that the processor is installed incorrectly. I'm pretty sure it's lying as I have checked it many times (please don't make me take off that heatsink/fan again) and the chip is FIRMLY set in it's place. Alas, the screen stays black (running off of a sapphire card) and nothing happens. I would expect to AT LEAST get a BIOS screen to see where I messed up my SATA configuration (as I'm sure I did...)
But, if anyone has seen a problem like this or knows a solution, please give me a shout. It is very much appreciated
edit: after lurking more (link) I have decided that i'm not at fault, it is, indeed, the graphics card and/or monitor that are not working. I get:
which, according to this post, means that I should be in the clear for BIOS set up. Nothing is displayed on my screen! :( Help!
    Thanks.

    1) Do u have any usb cables from your case front panel or Flash card/drive or usb hubs connected to the mobo if so unplug them.
    2) Switch off computer & unplug mains lead the remove a module of memory leaving the remaining 1 in slot1 (nearest CPU)
if 1 doesn't apply or doesn't give any change try 2.
1 does not apply, the only external devices i have attached are a monitor, keyboard, mouse (all os/2, not usb) and of course our friendly D-Bracket.
I have unplugged all IDE devices and SATA devices. All that's in there is the 1 GB of RAM (it's a 1gb stick, not 512mb), graphics card and processor, still no picture :(

  • Computer won't boot if the GTX 970 is plugged in

    Hello everyone,
I just recently bought and assembled a new computer, however, the computer won't boot when the gpu is plugged in.
The motherboard I got is a MSI Z97I Gaming AC and the GPU is a MSI GeForce GTX 970.
When the GPU isn't plugged in the mobo, everything boots up fine and I was able to check with the bios that every other elements of the computer where recognized fine. When I plug in the GPU however, the system won't boot. The fans of the case, the mobo AND the GPU's are working and the GPU's leds also on, so it shouldn't be a PSU issue (I use a 750W PSU so that should cover it). However, no boot at all.
I don't really feel like trying to plug the GPU in another computer if it's just some compatibility issue or whatnot that you may be aware of. Maybe the bios doesn't recognise it ? The version is e7920IMS V1.0, I wasn't really able to find any kind of information regarding the latest versions online.
    Thank you,
    Yann

Here it is, follow the below to update to 1.4:
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
A.) Download the attached archive and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool.
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
         F.) Boot to the USB
G.) Now follow the directions and let the tool flash
H.) After flashing reinstall ME drivers in Windows: http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/intel_me10_mb.zip

  • If usb is plugged the computer won't boot

Hi there. I have recently started to experience a new type of problem. I have two usb hdds connected to a usb hub. I've never had any problems with it(the hub). After I installed the last update 10.7.3 everytime I restart my computer if I have the hub (with all my hdds and other devices) connected to my computer, the computer won't boot. It get up to the white screen (before the loading wheel). If I unplug the usb cable it starts booting inmediately.
The funny thing is I didn't change anything lately. It started to do this yesterday.
    Thanks

Is the hub powered? If not that is probably your problem. The hd's are sucking power but can't get enough to power up and that is probably stopping the MBP from booting.

  • HP laptop won't boot at all

My one and half year old Hp 2000 laptop won't boot at all. When I press the power button, it doesn't show any sign of life at all.
I have tried Hard test several times yet it didn't fix it.
    Battery charges, power adapter working.
I have also tried to boot using the AC adapter alone yet my precious laptop isn't showing any sign of life.
Please how do I fix this? I need to do my assignment and prepare for my exams, and I can't afford a new laptop. Not when the current laptop is pretty new.
    Please help me HP support.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi @Chichiiii ,
    Thank You for your inquiry.
I understand that when you power on your notebook it is unresponsive.  You did state that the AC adapter is working and the battery is charging.

  • Computer won't boot with R9 270X Hawk installed.

It ran ok with a previous Hawk card, but that failed after 6 months and the problem I have is with the replacement supplied under warranty. The computer will not boot at all with the card installed. It runs fine with an ATI Radeon HD6450 in the PCI-e slot. The replacement card was returned to the supplier who checked it and says it works correctly. I haven’t got a spare PC to check myself.
The fans run and 8 blue leds light up but there is no output. I have checked there is 12v at the power connectors under load.
The PC is a Dell Inspiron 620, BIOS version A10 .
    4g memory
Apologies if there is already a solution here somewhere- I have looked.

    Thanks for your reply.
The pc is Dell Inspiron 620, cpu Intel i5-2320 3 GHz 4 core.
    4GB memory.
PSU is 650 watt Be Quiet BN210 Power Zone
If you need other details, please let me know which.
The card has been tried by the supplier (Scan Computers) and pronounced ok and I’ve no reason to doubt that, but I have no suitable PC here to try it in. It’s worth bearing in mind that exactly the same type of card ran ok for 7 months in this pc.
