Computer won't go into sleep mode

I have had my MacBook since August and have had sleep problems with it off and on for months...
- Whether I choose "sleep" from the Apple menu, close the lid, hit commandoptioneject, or just allow the computer to sleep naturally based on my settings (after 30 minutes of inactivity when plugged in or after 5 w/ battery) - the screen goes black for about 5 seconds, and then it makes the sound of the screen coming back on and just wakes back up.
- The computer used to sleep properly most of the time but would have sporadic problems. Now (for the past 4 days, consantly) it keeps running the screen saver until my settings tell it to sleep, at which point it goes black, wakes up immediately, and cycles through the screen saver again... It wakes up every 30 minutes even if I leave it alone for hours.
- I have fully updated software and firmware. I have tried resetting the PMU, changing screen saver/energy saver settings, turning off Airport (though I doubted that was the problem), exiting out of all applications before sleep, and repairing disk permissions in the disk utility. Any other suggestions???
Please help! I don't want to have to Shut Down every time I leave my computer....

I think Apple was having some issues with their site for a while ....anyway, have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if things still occur...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
Also, have you tried an SMC reset yet...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
I'd also suggest disabling the screen saver to see if that makes a difference as well. Failing all this, Apple would prob. recommend you do a fresh system install - and if things didn't clear up then, it would prob. be considered a hardware issue and have to be sent in for repair/replacement.

  • My computer won't go into sleep mode

I have my energy settings mode to have my monitor go off after 15 minutes, and my harddrive after 20. Yet after I installed Leopard, my monitor stays on, and I can hear my harddrive spin in the middle of the night.
What's going on? It was working under Tiger.

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit. If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.

    Try a reset:
Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 second until you see the Apple logo.

  • My iPhone won't go into sleep mode after bluetooth pairing

I've recently acquired a Parrot MiniKit Neo (a bluetooth remote dialer) and after I paired it with my iPhone 4S / iOS 6, this one does not enter in sleep mode anymore (the brightness of the screen down after 50 seconds and after 10 seconds more, it wakes up automatically instead to go into sleep mode).
Reset my iPhone (holding power + home button) solved this problem until I've paired again my iPhone with MiniKit.
I didn't tried another bluetooth devices like headset.

I've checked through my apps, I can't seem to find anything that would cause this. For some apps that have internet access I've turned them off.
I tried going into Activity Monitor and quitting all the running processes, including those for Finder and stuff, most of these system processes starts up again. But even when I have quit everything that I can quit, the computer won't sleep.
I've tried disconnecting the internet, unplugging all my extras and shutting off Time Machine, but still insomnia. I've tried logging into the guest account but still insomnia.
I went to Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>System Configuration and deleted the com.apple.PowerManagement and the com.apple.AutoWake.plist, rebooting and testing. But still insomnia. I've also deleted the User>Library>Preferences>com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and still no succes.
I've removed all the widgets, removed all startup items, and still no success.
It's not really a big issue, but the fact that I can't find the cause is driving me crazy!

  • HT204760 My desktop computer used to go into sleep mode....

I am using Maverick.  My desktop used to go into sleep mode if left inactive.  That's not a problem, but the last 2 days it has done something different.  When I go to wake it up, usually by pressing any key on the keyboard, nothing happens.  I have to briefly press the power key.  This wakes it up, but not like normal (straight to log-in screen).  It wakes it to a grey screen (sorry, can't take a screen shot to show this).  Now this is not the awful grey screen when something is terribly wrong.  This is a grey screen that is see-through - I can see my log in details, but they are not clear due to the grey screen on top of it.  Within about 30 seconds that grey screen goes away and I'm left with my normal log-in screen, but the mouse cursor is frozen in the top right corner, which also after about another 30 seconds or so, comes right and I'm good to go - like normal.
I haven't taken too much notice but I THINK that all 3 times this has happened is when I have left the computer for about 5 hours while I go to work - not sure.
What's happening or what setting has caused this to happen?  Anyone else have this issue?

Make sure you have applied the latest updates as described in this document.

  • HP Pavillion won't go into sleep mode

I have an HP Pavlillion that's about 3 years old. Recently when the comeputer goes into sleep mode (or when I put it in sleep mode), but the computer keeps going in and out sleep mode. It's like the computer goes into sleep mode then about 10 min. later it sounds like the computer is waking up by itself (however the monitor doesn't wake up). The monitor and computer will wake up if I move the mouse or whatever. But now I'm just shutting down the computer completely each night. Any ideas why this may be happening and is there a way to fix it?

    Hello Banna1981,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that you think your computer is going in and out of sleep mode yet the monitor stays in sleep mode and both the monitor and computer wake when you use the mouse or the keyboard. I suspect that what you are thinking is the computer waking up is actually scheduled activity or background processes running. If the monitor is staying in sleep mode I do not think that your computer is waking up or if it is it's to process specific activities like checking for updates or checking email etc . . .
If you are concerned I would be happy to assist you, but first I would encourage you to post which operating system you are using. And whether your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit as with this I can provide you with accurate information on booting in Safe Mode and finding out for sure what is causing this activity.
Which Windows operating system am I running?
Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit?
Please re-post with the requested information and I would be happy to provide you with assistance. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Pavilion dv6 won't go into Sleep Mode

My HP Pavilion dv6 always used to go into sleep mode everytime I closed the lid as it's supposed too. However recently when I close the lid it just loops the login screen as if you've locked your laptop. It makes the sound it used to make when I'd open the lid to wake it up. As far as I am aware there have been no software changes recently that could have caused this. Thanks.

  • IPad 2 won't go into sleep mode while charging

In the past couple of days my iPad 2 will not go into sleep mode while it is charging. The screen will go dim, but never go black. Any suggestions? I know I can just push the button on the top to force it into sleep mode and it will, but I've never had to do that before. I've had this iPad for over a year.

this is a software glitch, i suggest holding the home button and power button together untill you see the apple then let go, do not slide to power off, if all else fails you might have to restore the device to factory settings, still doesnt do that then its a hardware issue, and its probably going to be 250$ or more to replace

  • IPad won't go into Sleep mode

After using an App made specifically for the iPad and then try to turn off/put my iPad to sleep, it does not react at all. If I then start an App which was designed for the iPhone, then pressing the button on the top of the iPad leads directly to the iPad switching to sleep mode.
This does not happen with all iPad apps. Any ideas? I've tried it with several different iPad apps and it happens with some of them. All iPhone apps have no negative effects on the iPad sleep mode, which tells me that there has to be a problem with some of the iPad apps.
    thanks for the help.

Try a cold reboot. Same as turning off the iPad except keep holding down both buttons (side on/off and top screen Home button) until you see the Apple logo (it will go through the "Slide to power off" thing first- keep holding down). It should reboot automatically when you let go after the logo appears. This can take some time so be patient.
