Comtrend Powerline failure

I am having the exact same issue described in earlier posts - one of my Comtrend adapters just cycles through three red lights.  I can't do a factory reset - it just keeps cycling. Is there a fix for this or will I need replacement adapters?

Its not a surprise..Many BT customers tried to make some money of the warranty replacement.
The only issue is the Vbox will have all sorts of issues, it may restart and go slow if it doesnt have an internet connection.
Mine was restarting and got stuck in a restart loop, so I had to find a way to connect the hub to the router using a very long ethernet cable I had lying around.

  • Comtrend powerline adapters - Extreme danger

I would like to post a warning to all users of Comtrend powerline units. One of mine was showing a red status light showing an error condition so I attempted to reset it by unplugging it. As I removed it from the power socket the front casing came away and my fingers strayed dangerously close to the now exposed mains voltage circuit board. It would appear that the fragile plastic mounting pillars simply sheared off. Incredibly this panel is held in place by only two screws and once the pillars shear there is nothing to stop the panel coming off. It is not as if this has been exposed to undue stress, I have probably plugged it in and removed it five times or so since it was new. A photo of the unit is at http://www.thehomeofcricket.com/comtrend.jpg
I had an absolutely farcical conversation with the gentlemen at the call centre who really didnt understand the problem or the danger and wanted to know if my broadband was working, in the end he suggested that I call an electrician!
Finally when I spoke to someone at BT Vision they insisted that the only solution is to send an engineer out, they seemed unconcerned at the potentially lethal nature of these devices. As BT apparently will not tell you this I am posting this information on all boards where BT Vision is discussed in the hope that it will prevent someone getting killed.

I think Christine & John are right, these units certainly do run hot and I think this is the reason for the plastic weakening rather than melting. I would have thought at the very least the cover would be bonded/glued to main assembly - I think these come under the category of "no user servicable parts" so should probably never be openable after manufacture - it wouldnt be cost effective for the manufacturer to repair them anyway. They carry the CE mark which now looks fairly meaningless, I wonder how many other "hot" units such as laptop transformers carrying the CE are liable to fail and or catch fire.

  • Powerline adapter help!!!!!!!!!

    Hi all,
First time here. So, ive got bt vision and broadband. The vision uses the old white comtrend powerline adapters. Ive just received two new (black) ones, and want to add one or both to my network for my son to use his xbox online. Ive found a couple of links with info on how to add new ones but with no luck. So just want to A. clarify that the new type will work with the old (black work with white) and B. Hope that someone knows how.
Thanks in advance for any info

    What speeds are the homeplugs?
Am I right in thinking the Comtrend ones are 200Mbps?
85Mbps models will 'talk' to 14Mbps ones but not to 200Mbps units.
If the black pair are 85Mbps then it will work if you connect the XBox to one and the other one to the router. You will of course have 2 homeplugs connected to the router but at least that's a way round it.

  • Another Powerline question

I am currently using Comtrend powerline adaptors to connect my Vision box (downstairs) to the HH3 (upstairs) I am using infinity now and used the same configuraton when I was on ADSL without any problems.
I am considering changing over to Youview and would like to keep the same setup as I have now so I thought I should check the download speed at the downstairs end (never done this before as the Vision box worked fine) I measured download speed at 7Mbs (download speed at HH3 is upwards of 65). The Comtrends are 9020 model which I believe are good for 200Mbs.
So the questions are :- will a download speed of 7MBs be useable for Youview? if not, what is the limiting factor? if I get some 500Mbs adaptors will I see an improvement or is it the house wiring which is limiting the D/L speed and would higher throughput adaptors therefore be pointless?
    Thanks

Done that all I get is :

  • Faulty Powerline Adaptor - no response from techni...

    Hello,
One of my Comtrend Powerline Adaptors gave up the ghost on Monday 8th March, not showing any lights at all. When I unplugged it, I found that the two plastic mounting pins had basically disintegrated and the whole front of the unit came off in my hands.
After consulting the troubleshooting guide, I only got a very dim power light and the unit wouldn't reset. I followed the advice given and reported the problem to the BT Vision Technical Help Desk via their online form.
I received an automated reply but have had nothing else in reply since Monday. What's the usual response time for the technical help desk? Is is worth pursuing my original report or is it likely to be lost in the system somewhere!?
Any help from the moderators would be gratefully appreciated
    Cheers,
    Clare

  • Powerline adapter's

I have upgraded to this new fibre optic ( super fast ) broadband,  do I need to upgrade the Black "Comtrend" powerline adapters ?, my computer is working ok with the ethernet cabling but my BT Vision box which has an ethernet cable attached to another powerline adapter in  another room sometimes does work correctly.
Also I have installed a BD Dvd RW player which can do Skype through the telly, so I thought all I had to do was get another powerline adapter from an electrical outlet shop in Newcastle and obtain an ethernet cable to plug in with a seperate cam, but the "Comtrend " adapters are obsolete now and the shop could not sell me another adapter as they need to know all the technical data that only a geek would know.
Please advise a simple solution please

Many thanks Keith for quick response ,this is my set up >- Router and Modem are in spare room with computer, mains socket has powerline adapter then into this is plugged extenshion lead for various computing items.
In another room is the BT vision box with BD Dvd player and telly, so I have the powerline adapter into a mains socket with an extension lead/sockets plugged into it to give power to both boxes then the telly is plugged into it's own main socket.
I was thinking of getting another adapter to use in the same main socket as the telly and run an egternet cable from that to the BD DVD player as I have already done so for the BT vision on the other adapter ( getting confusing ) .
Your idea of running an extra long ehternet cable from the route/modem to the telly seems an easy alternative, yes the vision box and BD dvd are very close to eachother so do I just have to ask for a " siple network switch " at my electric shop ?

  • Extending broadband around the house

    Hi guys.
Just moved house and setting up the Internet, I have a Home Hub 3.0 which is fine for downstairs, but doesn't give strong enough signal to reach some upstairs rooms.  The main issue being my bedroom which is (due to extensions) beyond 2, very solid, external walls of the house, which gets no signal at all.  There is only 1 working socket to plug into in the house which is in an extension, so not great positioning.
What would I need in order to put a socket in my room to plug directly in? Presumably just running a phone line into my room wouldn't be enough? Would I need modem/router in the room?  I'm a bit lost, and never really understood broadband/wireless/phonelines.
Or alternatively are there any better solutions, such as boosters, extenders etc.  I did look at the things that can extend through electric sockets, but I'm not sure I can run 2 upstairs PC's from that?
    Any help much appreciated
    Thanks
    Matt

Powerline adapters would be your best option, one pair would be sufficient.
In the bedroom you can connect the powerline adapter to a network switch, which will allow you to plug in up to four computers upstairs.

  • Halloween - Spooky behaviour of Vbox

Our silver Vbox is in the bedroom, and normally behaves itself quite well. It's connected to the Home Hub 2.0 on the floor below over a pair of black Comtrend powerline adaptors (and, recently, via an Ethernet switch it shares with the BluRay player, though that was off at the time, and I anyway don't think the switch was involved).
About 2 am, we were awoken by the Vbox  buzzing and whirring like an angry wasp, and flashing a very bright green light on the front, either from the red 'Recording' LED, or the yellow 'Message Waiting' one. The flashing wasn't regular, but pulsed irregularly, though in sync with the buzzing/whirring.
If this had been a computer, I'd have said it was updating, the buzzing/whirring being disc writes and/or the fan, and the green light being the disc I/O light. (Actually, of course, it is a computer, but I don't think it's supposed to work like that, is it?)
The green Power light was also on, and steady. But putting the TV on showed 'No Signal' on the input for the Vbox, and it would respond neither to the remote, not even showing the blue light, nor to buttons on the Vbox itself.
I hesitated to interrupt it, aware that if this was an overnight update, that pulling the powerplug might brick it, so I let it run.
But awaking at six, it was still the same; so I pulled the Ethernet plug out. No change. Then I pulled the mains adaptor out - to **bleep** with bricking it, I wanted my sleep.
But putting it all back a few hours later, the Vbox powered back up normally, had a little think, and then showed the usual menus. All the recordings and schedules seemed intact; there was no evidence of any update. And there didn't seem to be any unexpected downloads, like a free HD movie from BT or whatever.
(Matter of fact, we've never downloaded anything, so we wouldn't even know what an overnight download looks like, but I don't think it would look like what we saw).
Any thoughts as to what this might have been?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There were lots of problems with the Vision service yesterday, it was probably trying to connect to get listings, failing then rebooting - that would be my guess.  Depending on where you live, the service came back up at anytime from 1 in the morning to about 7ish.

  • Powerline Adaptor Failure Rate

There have been a few threads now regarding the failure of Powerline Adaptors.
I recently spent £20 for a second hand replacement from the well known auction site, but others seem to be asking or getting BT to replace these, presumably for free even after they are over a year old?
Now we all know these run quite hot, and electronics and heat are not a good match for long life, so if we are going to see more of these fail, can we expect BT to supply a better version or superior make in the future, or replace the current Comtrends if they are proving unreliable?
Its a little worrying that as they run so hot, some of the increasing number of faults might result in a fire?
Mine failed after 1 year and 10 months of use, left on 24/7.
    Any thoughts guys...........?

Has anyone out there had success with addition of said Powerline adaptor?
The performance of Ethernet powerline adapters cannot be predicted in advance. One brand might work great in one home, but the same brand and model in another home just won't work.
Your best bet is to make sure that you understand the stores' return policy before you buy, since you cannot know how well.....or IF...any given adapters will work in your home until you try them out in your home.

  • Powerline Adapters: Comtrend Vs Simpler Networks

I am wondering which of the powerline adapter types is better:
I am currently using a pair of black Comtrend adapters with plug socket pass-thru (PowerGrid 9020, P/N 724306-026),
but BT have just sent me a pair of white and slightly smaller Simpler Networks adapters (Model: HP200PT64BT, Item 061114).
Are the newer Simpler Networks adapters superior?
I am mainly concerned about Throughput, Power Consumption and the Standard supported.

Powerline adaptors very much depend on your home wiring. Like most electrical equipment, you will always get performance differences where one will perform better than others in certain scenarios, but in other situations a different one will perform better.
ADSL routers are a perfect example of this. I've seen sometimes a 2meg sync difference across different routers using the same line, filters and setup. I use Devolo powerline adaptors and have only good things to say about them

  • Configuring non-BT provided Powerline Adapters

I recently installed BT Vision+.  The package came with a BT HomeHub2 router and two COMTREND PG9020 powerline adapters.  I chose to replace my Netgear 802.11n router with the BT Home Hub2 - and it all works fine.
To my original Netgear router i had recently connected a pair of ADDON HP2000 powerline adapters which allowed my son more assured access to the router (due to some thick walls wireless was a tad unrelaible).
I now want to know how can I add the two ADDON HP2000 powerline adapters onto the BTHomeHub2 provided network using one of the COMTREND PG9020 as an Access Point (AP) and the other connected to my BT-V box.  With the two spare ADDON HP2000 powerline adpaters I should be able to have two more ethernet acccess points.
How do I configure the two ADDON HP2000 devices to work through the COMTREND PG9020 Access Point to the Home Hub2?
I am reasonably IT literate but please don't get too technical.
    Cheers

    According to : http://www.addon-tech.com/new/product_info.php?id=104
HP2000 use the following standard for Networking over Mains:
HomePlug AV 1.0, Co-exists with existing HomePlug 1.0
PG-9020 don't (as far as I can read from the specification).
    http://www.comtrend-store.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_book.tpl&product_i...
    PG-9030's do.
    http://www.comtrend-store.com/store/details/28/6/accessories/homeplug%C2%AE-av-ethernet-adapter---pg...
Good, luck - it might work, but I wouldn't be the farm. Briefly - you need to give them all the same encryption key and encryption type. You need to use a web browser and navigate to the IP address of each adapter. You should be able to identify where they are by using the Attached Devices section of your HomeHub:
    http://192.168.1.254/hnet_device.lp?be=1&l2=0&l0=2&l1=3
Once you have identified them, login using their IP address - typing the password (password or admin):
Navigate to Change Configuration (Left Nav)->Mac (Top Nav)
e.g on my Comtrends, the encryption is set here:
    http://192.168.1.69/mac.htm
Make sure all adapters have the Same Encrpyption Key and Type.
You can try and get them to work (it's worth a try). Comtrend aren't brilliant at providing the actual standards they use. If you can't get it to work following the instructions, it might be better buying 3 or 4 of the same type of adapter - it is easy to configure them using the guides.
    Hope this helps(?)

  • Powerline adapters not working

On returning from holiday Monday afternoon I found that, although I could flick through the TV channels, there was no program information being displayed. I powered down everything and restarted it. Eventually an error message was displayed (C01).
I think I trcked the problem down to the powerline adapters as no lights came on. I tried them in another socket and still no joy. I also noticed that one of them was making a whistling sound. In fact it has been doing that for the past month.
I logged a fault and received a reference number 110530-004293 but since then I have heard nothing.
How long am I likely to have to wait before I can watch TV again?

Had the same problem. One of the powerline adapters had failed (The one the Vision+ box is connected) , no lights showing.  Called BT help line on 08001114567 on Friday 17th and got to talk to an operative pretty quickly.  After consulting his supervisor I was advised a new pair of powerline adapters would arrive Monday or Tuesday (20/21). Arrived yesterday Monday.  Plugged them in today and the BT Vision box would not connect until I had reset the home hub and the Vision+ box.  Now seems to be OK.  Excellent service from BT.
MY PROBLEM is I also have a third powerline adapter which connects a computer at the other side of the house, wwfi is no good too much iron in the bricks and there is also a steel girder in the line of the signal.  This powerline adapter is of the previous type Comtrend Power Grid 902 and the new ones are Comtrend Powergrid 9020, these appear to be unique to BT.
CAN ANYONE ADVISE ME IF I CAN RESET THE OLD TYPE (POWER GRID 902) TO MATCH THE PG9020 TO KEEP THIS COMPUTER CONNECTED TO THE HOME HUB.  I have the instructions 'How to add a new Powerline to your existing network' for the PG902 but do not want to try it in case I mess up the setting on the new Powergrids.
Perhaps the BT Administrator could answer this.

  • BT broadband powerline extender compatability

Hi I already own a pair of BT 500 flex seris broadband powerline expanders and very nice they are to I have read that to add to my growing network any of the 500 range products are compatable also Arch and Simpler powerline adapets but not Comtrend.
My quary is I have the chance to buy a pair of BT 200 seris powerline adpaters and was wondering if these are also compatable to mix and match with the 500 seris products.
Also would the talktalk powerline adapters also work with the BT 500 seris products.
Thank you for any time given in offering help.

Now resolved. I did not follow the instructions in exactly the right way so I will outline where I went wrong in case someone has the same issue.
If the Data light stays off even after a reset then after it is correctly plugged into the wall socket:
    1. Press the Linkbutton on the extender for 5-8 secs then remove finger from the button and wait for the power light to go back to steady green.
    2. Press the Linkbutton again, this ime for 1 second.
    3. Within 2 mins press the Linkbutton on one of the Home Hubs for 1 sec to complete the connection.
Hopefully the power and data lights on both the Extender and Home Hub will be back on.
The key thing I did not do was remove my finger from the Linkbutton after 5-8 sec on part 2!
Apologies for posting such a very simple error, but who knows it might help someone in a similar predicament!

Since I updated yesterday, I have the latest versions of all packages (note that xf86-video-intel is still 2.99.916-3, it hasn't been updated). I run linux-lts 3.14.21-1 (because of other hibernation issues with linux >.<).
    Other useful information:
I used UXA for xf86-video-intel, but switching to SNA doesn't solve the problem.
I tried downgrading Firefox to 32.3 and gtk2 to 2.24.24, same problem.

Update: actually this has nothing to do with i915 (I can see the issue earlier in the journal), and after hours of downgrading/reupgrading madness the problem just disappeared... It was probably a bug of Firefox because of the number of tabs opened in the same time or something like that... Maybe related to a website in particular, since I saw some libmozalloc segfault in the log. Anyway, topic invalidated.

  • Using Broadband/BT Vision and BT Powerline Adapter...

Good Evening, Two weeks ago I moved to BT Broadband, set up the Home Hub etc and all was well with my home network using powerline adapters (Solwise & Zyxel) to connect a PC, Printer & NAS independently to the network. Wireless also worked well to two laptops in the house.
This week on Monday, my BT Vision box arrived and so I connected that up and reasonably quickly all was well with that too.
However, my home network immediately stopped working with the PC unable to connect to the internet via the BT Powerline adapter connected to the home hub. Wireless continues to be fine. I've looked in this forum and saw a post which indicated the BT Vision box could work with Solwise adapters so tonight I tried that, but it didn't connect up at all.
    So, my questions are:-
    1. Can I connect my home network to the home hub via the BT powerline adapters somehow?
    2. If not, can I actually use my other adapters to connect BT Vision and my home network to the home hub?
    3. Is there any other way I can set all this up so I can use both?
I should add moving hubs & boxes closer together is not an option, likewise I could go wireless to the PC but the NAS & printer are not wireless enabled.
Any thoughts, suggestions will be greatly accepted!
    thanks.

    1) Not sure, don't know enough about them but I'm sure I read that Poweline type products are not necessarily compatible, but can't remember any details.
    2) No reason why you can't use your other adapters with the Vision box, all it needs is an Ethernet connection, how you get that is up to you. Can't see a problem with that.
    3) As 1.
All that said, however, as Esther Rancid used to say on That's Life: "Unless, of course, you know different.  Cyril..."
    EDIT
A bit of grubbing around took me to this thread on the Solwise forum. Seems like Comtrend and Solwise use different standards and won't work together.
