Concerning iphoto 11

Since upgrading to iphoto 11 I,m having difficulty viewing my photos in edit mode. On the quick scan of info mode the photos appear sharp, however in edit mode the edges blur up making it very difficult to edit properly, What is the problem here?  I never had the problem with I photo 9. Mind you i was upgraded on a recommendation at he Genius Bar as a way to make iphoto work faster.

  • Some Technical Questions Concerning iPhoto 09.

I would like to use iPhoto to arrange, organize, tag, and otherwise un-mangle my family photos taken within the last ten years. However, I have never so much as launched an instance of iPhoto! I have a couple of technical questions that I'm hoping can be answered by a forum guru.
1.) I love the idea of iPhoto tagging and organizing my photos via places, faces, events etc. How does iPhoto store the metadata which allows it to organize as such? Is this data added to the photo files as additional EXIF data? Or is there an iPhoto database file/files which needs to be maintained?
2.) When "importing" photo files into iPhoto, I'm assuming that additional thumbnail files are created and stored. Does it store additional "full" versions of the photo files by default (as iTunes will do with MP3s if you are not careful?) And when you start creating smart albums et al, I'm sure something similar to iTunes Library files (.ITL, .XML etc) are also created. What are the important files and directories created in the process?
Perhaps these questions can be answered appropriately by addressing my third question...
3.) Can someone point me to a whitepaper, article, webpage or discussion of iPhoto which goes beyond the available Apple.com tutorial? I know there must be a book available, but I really don't have the time to dedicate to a full book on the subject. I'm extremely lazy and still haven't finished the copy of Ulysses I purchased ten years ago. Just need some quick and dirty explanations...

IF you're not too lazy to read the replies:
1.) I love the idea of iPhoto tagging and organizing my photos via places, faces, events etc. How does iPhoto store the metadata which allows it to organize as such? Is this data added to the photo files as additional EXIF data? Or is there an iPhoto database file/files which needs to be maintained?
This metadata is stored in the iPhoto database. It can be written to the files on export. Prior to Export there's no need to. I have no idea what you mean by "iPhoto database file/files which needs to be maintained?"
2.) When "importing" photo files into iPhoto, I'm assuming that additional thumbnail files are created and stored.
Correct. They are what you see in the iPhoto Window in Organising mode.
Does it store additional "full" versions of the photo files by default
    Yes.
And when you start creating smart albums et al, I'm sure something similar to iTunes Library files (.ITL, .XML etc) are also created.
No there aren't. Again, this is all stored in the iPhoto Database.
What are the important files and directories created in the process?
There's only one you need back up. It's the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
    At a guess this question:
Does it store additional "full" versions of the photo files by default
suggests you don't want this to happen.
You can run iPhoto in Referenced Mode where this won't happen. I strongly urge you not to, expecially as you haven't a clue about iPhoto and are very lazy.
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
    Regards
    TD

  • Some Ideas On Organizing/Maintaining Photos via iPhoto? How do YOU do it?

I posted a couple of technical questions last week concerning iPhoto and how it handles files, thumbnails, EXIF data, and photo originals/copies (as http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11425805). Terence Devlin and LarryHN gave me the answers I needed. From their answers, I now have an understanding of the default method iPhoto utilizes to manage and maintain photo libraries.
Those answers have led me to a couple more questions, mostly regarding how I can best organize and maintain my photos via iPhoto within a multiple Operating System household. My massive music collection is easy... I manually maintain and organize my music files via iTunes. I can download music and fix tags in XP or OSX. I store the results on my Windows-based file server and share the iTunes library. On my MacBookPro, I have an iTunes Library that references the directories on the server. Or, I can just access the "shared" iTunes library. Same with my Ubuntu machine (with some anomalies.) Both Windows and OSX have versions of iTunes. Not so with iPhoto.
So, by default, importing my photos into iPhoto will make "copies" as well as a proprietary database containing the EXIF changes I make within iPhoto. I don't see that as the best scenario for me.
What would YOU suggest? How about storing my photos on my file server and pointing iPhoto to the location in "Referenced Mode?" This seems to be similar to how I manage my music. Yes, I know that if I change a filename or path that the library will loose track of it. I deal with this in iTunes. Occasionally, If I make a bunch of changes, I just delete my iTunes library and re-load. But that's the beauty of iTunes... if I change MP3 tag data using iTunes, the changes are made within the MP3 file itself. So if I loose the library, who cares?
I was hoping to use iPhoto in a similar way: Make changes (places, faces, etc) and have iPhoto save the data within the EXIF fields of the photo itself. That way if I move the photo around, or restore from a backup, ot loose the iPhoto library, so be it!
Unlike iTunes, it sounds like if I loose my iPhoto library, I loose all my metadata as well (unless I "export" the photo from within iPhoto?) PLUS I need to maintain the original photos and the iPhoto copies... unless I use Referenced Mode.
How about some organizational ideas/inspiration/guidance? Help me tidy up my sloppy photo collection.

    Key points
1 - iPhoto has NO cross platform capabilities
2 - iPhoto is not well oriented to managing referenced libraries

You have to maintain both in either a referenced or managed library - but in an referenced library the originals are your responsibility to maintain and to keep the path constant

Probably iPhoto is not the correct solution for your needs

  • Iphoto books have received bad raps years ago... is it still risky business. Are the pages glossy? matte? quality ok?

after reading negative posts concerning iphoto books I wonder if the service has improved?

Guess only you can answer that - I see the comments here being overwhelmingly positive - and that is amazing on a forum devoted to problems rather than successes

  • IPhoto '11 and previous version Projects missing their linked photos

This concerns iPhoto '11 (9.2.1) running under Lion 10.7.2. Fully maintained.
For the past couple of years my wife has been making iPhoto hardcover books ('projects') using photos from within various versions of iPhoto. Yesterday she completed her latest book and uploaded it off for printing. She then decided to order an additional copy of a book she'd made a couple of years ago, and opened the project file in iPhoto. For a brief moment there was a screen caption saying 'upgrading', and then a message to say upgrading was successful, and please to check book before printing.
So she did - and whilst the pages and layouts were there, and text captions, ALL the inserted photos were missing! All the photos show up in the source list on the righthandside of iPhoto, but none of them are linked into the project book! She checked back into previous books (projects), and other than a couple of recent books, all were the same - the pages, layout and text were fine, but no linked-in photos.
So quitting iPhoto and reopening command-option to get to the maintenance section, ticking all the boxes to examine and rebuild, after a few hours the result was the same - all the past projects were devoid of linked-in pictures!
Worse still - the project she completed yesterday, and had sent for printing, now had some of its photos inserted sideways, or upside-down! Clicking on the photo on the page opens it the correct way around, and not as shown on the page layout!
Going back into TimeMachine and extracting the iPhoto library from 6 months ago, opening it in iPhoto '11 (9.2.1) on a different machine gives the same result as above - the 'upgrading' message, the 'success and check' message, and the resultant unlinked photos. NOTE: once a previous project has been selected from the list, the 'upgrading' process is instant, unstoppable and not undoable.
Do anyone have any explanantions or suggestions on how to resolve these issues?

    well....
    update this post.....
It's strange.... I have news.... maybe I have the solution but I have to test if I have lost something....
I opened time machine and simply cut & paste Pictures folder from backup to my folder, then opened iphoto with option key .... iphoto check updates on net and download last updates showing a popup that informes me that updating library to last iphoto version I will not be able to see photos with previous version of iphoto.
once updated the software i can see all photos..... now i just have to check if there are all photos and i have not lost anything.....

  • Upgrade iphoto 6 impossible

    Hi,
I have iphoto 5 (last update September 05) and I just tried to upgrade iphoto6.
I downloaded the upgrade, but after when I try to install it, I choose HD Disk and I get the following message :
"you can not install this update on this disk, no good application iphoto was found under /application/iphoto.app"
    I am on OSX 10.4.3
It's like if I don't have Iphoto on my PB ?
    Thanks

I just wanted to add that once you buy this years release of iLife, the updates to that software are free and accessible through the software update feature of mac osx. So no need to go to a web site and download the update. The software update feature makes sure you get the updates for software you have on your machine. (as far this update process is concerned, iPhoto 5 and iPhoto 6 are as different as iTunes and iWeb).
So, my advice is: Don't go to the web to get the downloads, do use the built in software update feature, and do buy iLife '06. Then you'll be set with free updates for the next year when iLife '07 presumably comes out.

  • Kernel panics despite all fixes

First, the specs of my system:

CS2, Office X, Firefox, Apple Mail, Fetch, Dreamweaver, Lotus Notes (I teach an online class and that's the interface, believe it or not), Virex and Disk Warrior
A while ago I started to have two problems, which may or may not be related:
    1. Sometimes the computer would not wake from sleep requiring pushing the restart button.
    2. Kernel panics at least a few times a month, always soon after waking from sleep
I went through every step outlined in the X Lab: Resolving Kernel Panics page. Finally, in desperation I erased the start-up disk and re-installed the system, going through all of the system updates (note - after reading this forum I have not installed the most recent security update). Well, I'm still having both issues, plus a few more concerning iPhoto permissions (that will be a separate post). I keep no peripherals attached except when I need them (Epson scanner and Neptune FW drive) and the kernel panics occur whether or not the peripherals are attached to the computer. I've even swapped out my Macally keyboard and Kensington mouse for an Apple keyboard and logitech mouse, but still had kp's.

I've included the re-start info because in all of the system logs there is always the last line about the ROM for the video card being too old. This is the original card that came with the computer and the monitor hooked up to it is the original one.
I'm at my wit's end. Any suggestions? I have 10.4 available but haven't been really interested in updating because my computer is old and I'm concerned that it isn't really fast enough for 10.4. But if it would stop the kernel panics and wake from sleep problems, I'd try it.

  • Identifying images in Photostream Project as being elsewhere in the database?

my aperture database is stuck on 3.4.5 because my mac pro is stuck on lion and i cannot figure out how to SORT my library with respect to these Projects.
basically i have changed my PS settings over the last couple of years (including my import settings) and i can no longer figure out if images that are in PS project are /solely/ in these projects or if they also reside elsewhere in the database. this relates (in part) to a confusion i had about what photo stream was doing but also about what the settings were doing.
so i have a huge issue where i don't know if SOME of the images in these Projects are basically "originals" in my database (it is the only instance of them in the database) or if they represent basically copies of images that are stored in their correct place in a Project that "thematically" sorts my images.
i mean, ideally i want to get all my images sorted THEMATICALLY in a Project and not simply have SOME of them only in the PS Projects. i also don't want to have to drag out /all/ of the images, sort all of them into thematically named Projects and then have to delete the ones that came in twice. this will be a nightmare and represent possibly three weeks of work.
anyway, i am upgrading to a new laptop with a larger hard drive and i am wondering if i migrate my library onto this new computer with a newer OS (and presumably a newer version of Aperture) can i sort this out easier/easily?
right now under my current OS i do not believe there is a way to see if the images in my PhotoStream Projects are basically duplicates of other images that have already been sorted into thematically named Projects of if in fact i need to move some images out of these PS Projects in order to get them where they belong.
hopefully someone understands the predicament and if not can ask me to clarify as i am pretty much dead in the water with an unsorted database AFAIK.
    THANKS

Yes you are right concerning iPhoto retaining the full size photo, in my earlier post I was incorrect to assume that PS pushed the lower quality photo to iPhoto, it doesn't, but it does push a lower quality image to your other idevices. This quoted from the FAQ....
On your Mac or PC, your photos are downloaded and stored in full resolution. On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV, your Photo Stream photos are delivered in a device-optimized resolution that speeds downloads and saves storage space. While actual dimensions will vary, an optimized version of a photo taken by a standard point-and-shoot camera will have a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution when pushed to your devices.
Your device holds two copies of the same photo, one in PS, the other in whatever album you save your photo to, or the camera roll. My point is that PS is supposed to be a temporary folder, holding the images for 30 days, allowing you time to save the ones you want. As it is now, it's duplicating every photo, and storing them on the same device twice. Not what I want, nor what it's intended to do. If you have an iPhone, you can check this by using Camera+ or an app which shows metadata. Take a photo, import it into Camera+ then click info, look at the file size, then load the same photo from PS, again click info and look at the file size. Two different sizes, meaning two copies of the same photo, one being lower quality.
I just want it to do the task it's supposed to, which is temporarily hold my images, letting me save the ones I want, and then clearing after a month.

  • Albums and Folders

Hi Everyone, This is my first Query so please bear with me. It concerns iPhoto 09, I'm up to speed with creating Folders and Albums, however my query is that after creating the albums etc and dragging the images into them the images are still shown in the main events pane. Does this mean that iPhoto has created a second set when the album is created and therefore using more space. I would have thought that when the album is created it would have moved the images from the events pane and put them into that album, so that when that is opened up the images become visible. I've tried, once the album is created moving the images from events to trash but then they go from the album as well. Thankfully 'undo' and a good back up mean I don't lose anything. Any thoughts would be appreciated - Many Thanks

No - albums are virtual things - just pointers in the database to the photo in the event - a photo can be in any number of albums with no additional space being used
I would have thought that when the album is created it would have moved the images from the events pane and put them into that album, so that when that is opened up the images become visible.
No as noted above it does not move anything - a pointer is created
I've tried, once the album is created moving the images from events to trash but then they go from the album as well.
That is correct - the photo is only in one place - the event - removing it from an album only removed it form the album - removing it from an event totally removes it from everyplace
Thankfully 'undo' and a good back up mean I don't lose anything. Any thoughts would be appreciated -
and it would be a worthwhile investment of time to take the iphoto tutorials - http://www.apple.com/findouthow/photos/ - they are very helpful and will save you a lot of time and frustration.

  • New user : need to organise 6000 photos

Hi, I would appreciate any help as i am new to using a iMac. I was just wondering what would be the best programme to use to organise my photos into folders? at the moment ive imported my photos to iphoto but im unsure if i can organise within this programme or is there another one i should use. Nothing to complicated just yet plz

We need to distinguish between folders on the HD which are seen in Finder and folders in iPhoto which are only seen  in iPhoto.
iPhoto is a type of program referred to as a DAM, Digital Asset Manager. The program is responsible for managing your images, they are kept within the iPhoto library are meant to be accessed only through iPhoto. The program gives you a rich set of operations for sorting and searching or images based on a number of factors.
So by using a DAM for your images you give up the ability to manipulate your images in Finder but you gain search and sort capabilities the finder can't do, at least not easily. This is of course in addition to the image manipulation tools iPhoto gives you.
The advantage of a DAM over storing your images yourself on the HD are huge. It takes a bit of getting use to at first, but once you do you'll wonder how you managed before.
There is a separate list for iPhoto questions iPhoto You would be better off if you have any questions concerning iPhoto to post there, there are a lot of very iPhoto knowledgeable people there
    good luck

  • Should I Buy iLife 08?

I am considering purchasing '08, but I have read some nightmares concerning iPhoto and iMovie. Is it worth it to buy iLife '08? Have the bugs been worked out?

I second SDMacuser's comments all the way. Make sure you prepare your iPhoto library before the conversion do a rebuild of the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and following the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options. Also make a backup copy of it before installing iPhoto and the other iApps. Be sure to download and run all of the updaters for them iApps before trying any of them. I prefer to download and run the standalone updaters from the Apple Downloads site followed by a repair of disk permissions.
It would also probably be wise to make sure your at the latest Quicktime and System version. Updaters for those can be also be found at the download site mentioned above.

  • Quality concerns when creating a book in iPhoto from images in Aperture

I use Aperture but I still like the ides of creating books in iPhoto as their styles are more suitable to, such things as, holiday photo albums than the styles offered in Aperture. The approach I use is to open iPhoto, use the 'Show Aperture Library' facility, drag and drop the images into iPhoto, and then create a book in the normal way in iPhoto.
The concern is that the imported images into iPhoto are just small jpegs. The original in Aperture may be a 8MB RAW image whereas the imported image into iPhoto, for the purpose of book creation, may just be a 500KB jpeg. This surely must have an effect on the quality of the printed images in the book. Any views, please.

    John,
Unless you get the little yellow exclamation mark triangle warning when you put the photo in the book. you should be ok. If not, you may have to recreate the preview for those images back in Aperture. I believe the previews are all that are used in the book. I just had a book printed through Aperture and had no problems with the default half size previews.
