Connect a Guitar to my MacPro

Yesterday I bought an electro-acustic Guitar and I would like to connect it to my MacPro and use it with Garage Band.
It is possible to connect it directly to the computer?
Do I need some extra hardware (like an interface)?
Any help well be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance

You may want to look at the Line 6 TONEPORT UX1 as an entry level device. http://www.line6.com/toneport/

hi, i bought a irig to connect my guitar on my macbook pro 2012, but when i use the irig in my mac, it doesnt recognize, so i cant choose it on preferences of sound, what can i do?  (the sound of my guitar goes by IRIG but I can not hear due to feedback and when I try to record another track on the garageband, the sounds recorded on the new track is catching the sound of another track recorded)

Turn the internal mic level off. Use headphones as monitors.

As has been said really, the less you pay the less quality, and flexibility you'll have on your sound.
For example, you could run on a 'Rocksmith Real Tone Cable' if you just wanted a cheap way of getting your guitar into the computer for some fun.  Probably cost you $30 (I live in UK so can't be sure).  If you're starting out then this could be considered the best option for dipping your toe in the water without spending too much.
You won't get a really nasty sound out of that if you can process it yourself in Logic afterwards to clean up, but it won't be great either.  I imagine it could get quite noisy so you'd need to get heavily gating your guitar sound, if you're playing something clean that's not ideal.
Longterm, you're far better getting a decent audio interface, as you need something to play sound back through, if you have different input sources you usually have to create an aggregrate device on osx to use multple sources at once esp if you're using the built in audio chip on your mac to listen.
All this can add latency and possibly sync issues (i.e. drum tracks not in time with audio etc.), although generally it's not too bad, but it's something worth knowing if you want to do things on the cheap without buying a dedicated interface.
What kind of money did you want to spend? Are you thinking super duper cheap, and then see how it goes and maybe spend more in future if you enjoy it?  Personally i would say £100-150 would get your something good to start with, like that Presonus audiobox, there's a lot of options like that available.
My local music shop always push the alesis io2 on new users, gotta say i'm not that overly impressed with it.  Line 6 stuff will be good however, but limiting.  Although i beleive you get their software for free with it?

Can you connect a guitar via a USB rather than go through the microphone plug?

afaik the iRig is for iOS devices, not Macs

before you spend more money you should see if you can get the itnerface you already bought to work.
check to see if it requires a driver
then you need to select it:

  • How do I connect a guitar?

I just ordered a macbook online and am very interested in using garageband. I was just wondering how I connect my guitar to my macbook. Can I just use any guitar cord, or do I need to buy something extra? Also, if I do need to buy something extra, where can I get it? Thanks!

The audio quality from the Griffin iMic is mediocre - it sometimes distorts at high-levels and with the lower frequencies.
If you want something a little better, you could try this:

  • Connecting a Guitar to the Line

    Hi Friends !
Is it ok if I connect my Electric Guitar to the computer (line-in) thru a BOSS Metal Zone Pedal ? Will?the?output from the Distortion Pedal be high to?harm the Computer or the Sound Card (I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 4) ? Kindly advice regarding this.
I usually connect my Guitar directly to the Line-in and it works just fine, but I'm not sure about the output of the Distortion Pedal. Any help would be greatly helpful. Kindly advice.

The same thing happened to me when my band was trying to record ideas for a demo, it just stopped working and none of the settings had changed...do you have Growl or Application Enhancer installed? The authorized Apple dealer here told me that could be one place to check first, although I uninstalled them and it still didn't work.
The only solution I found that worked and hasn't failed me was to reinstall OS X...there may be another way, it hasn't quit working on me yet and I have Growl and Application Enhancer installed again, leading me to believe someone was just blowing smoke. That's what worked for me though, if that's an option for you try it out.

  • What cable connects a guitar to my iMac Yosemite?

I just want to learn to play guitar.  How can I connect a guitar to my iMac.  Help doesn't specify  a cable and Im not sure what brand will be compatible.

What kind of guitar do you have? Does it have a pre-amp?
Your iMac does not have an audio-in port. That is why Csound1 recommended audio interfaces, that will turn a USB port into a high-quality audio input port, suitable for a guitar.
If you just want to try out an electric guitar, you could use an input splitter and connect it to the headphone port, if your guitar has a pre-amp,
    (for example this 2x 3-Pin 3.5mm Headset Splitter Adapter - M/F
    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004SP0WAQ).
Or use the iMic adapter  ( Recording with iMic in GarageBand). But both will not make you happy for a long time. The audio quality is not that good.

  • [SOLVED] Connecting my guitar to my pc and get sound out?

I have a guitar and a cable that came with the game Rocksmith for ps3. The cable is a regular guitar cable with a usb out. Is there any software that I could use to get sound out from my pc. When I connect it to my pc, it recognizes my guitar as a microphone.  I searched and all I found was some $500 windows software. Thank you for all the help.

If you have a decent sound card this might work for processing the guitar sound, but I haven't tried this myself even though I have the cable. It basically depends on what is put out through the usb cable. You might want to install some audio recording software, treat the input as a microphone and see what is being captured.
However, it is probably a better idea to connect the guitar directly to the sound card with a regular cable (through a mixer or with an adapter). The translation process in the cable will very likely only add latency. A bit more information about what you are trying to accomplish will get you better answers :-)
I just wanted to get sound out of my computer because I have no amp or any money to buy one right now. I have some nice computer speakers and thought that the cable might work since it is a usb. I'm not using my ps3 because it broke or else I would just use my tv. But thanks for the idea. I'll keep looking around.

  • HOW CAN I GET LINE IN ON SOUD IN SYSTEM PREFERENCE I NEED TO CONNECT MY GUITAR.

HOW CAN I GET LINE IN ON SOUD IN SYSTEM PREFERENCE I NEED TO CONNECT MY GUITAR.

Please do Not type in ALL CAPITALS.  It is considered shouting in online communications.  Now, in System Preferences, click on "Sound", and in that window click on the "Input" tab shown below.  Then in the list below that click on "Line In."  That will activate the Audio Line-In Port.

  • When I connect my guitar using apogee jam the note drops off after a few seconds. Why???

When I connect my guitar using apogee jam the note drops off after a few seconds. Why???
Its the same on most of the preset amps.
Please help, the apogee cost me £80!

Is it stopping recording after 8 seconds? Are you using Garage Band?
If both of these are correct:
This is actually a feature (i'm not sure why it defaults to this).  Instructions for the iPhone version are below:
With the amp section open, touch the sproket on the upper right.
You should be in a "settings" type area with three tabs.  Touch "Sections"
Select the section and switch it to automatic - it will now record until you stop recording by touching the stop icon.

  • Connecting Electric Guitar to Garageband on G5 iMac

I've seen other discussions about this, but cannot figure out this seemingly simple process.
-I connected the guitar via 1/4 to 1/8 cables into the "line in" port on the back of the iMac.
-I chose "real instrument" when adding a new track in garageband
-I made sure that the sound input preferences under system preferences correctly states "line in" (and not internal audio/speakers).
-I have the drop down menu set to "Monitor On" and the Sound menu to "Stereo"
(even when I mess with these settings nothing gets recorded).
When I hit record nothing comes through the computer - nothing gets recorded.
Do I need the Griffin iMac or similar device?
    Any suggestions?

it depends which iMac you're using:

Command I will open the master window on the right. Make sure under "I"nfo lower right corner next to monitor, make sure it is not turned off. If you are playing an elctric guitar, don't bother with the no feedback setting.
Make sure the volume in system prefs is up and not muted. (system prefs.sound.output)

  • Connecting Electric Guitar to computer

I am trying to connect an electric guitar to a MacBook. Do I connect the amp to the computer using the headphone out jack on the amp or connect the guitar directly to the computer? I have seen various posts where users are connecting both methods.

A better way is to use an audio interface.
    better signal, more inputs...
