Connect iMac 24inch to a 40inch LCD Full HD, possible?

Hey guys,
I have an intel iMac 24inch (the complete white one) and I was wondering if I could attach my Sony 40W2000 Full HD to it, and still get a full hd view on my Sony?
Is it possible? If so, what is the best way to do it?
Thx,
Maxim

I think you would need to get the mini-DVI to (full) DVI adapter.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=7E4 EB91E&nplm=M9321G/B
From there, use a DVI to HDMI cable to connect to the HDTV.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=7E5 08A9A&nplm=TL952LL/A
There are several different DVI connectors, so make sure its the one that fits the adapter.
DVI does not carry audio, so you'll have to run that separately, off the iMac's headphone mini-stereo jack.
I've done this with a Power Mac G5, but not an iMac. The HDTV shows up on the Mac as the second display. You can adjust resolution, arrangement, and color using System Preferences Displays pane.

  • Connecting iMac G5 to Samsung 40" LCD television.

    Hi folks,
A friend of mine is about to purchase his first Mac, an iMac G5.
He currently owns a 40" Samsung LCD television, the exact model can be seen here:
    http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/television/tftlcd/le40r51bxxeu.asp?page=Speci fications
He would like to know if it's possible to connect the iMac to his television and if so, which of the numerous cables available in the apple store would be best for him to purchase? I've tried my best to advise him but there's simply too many on offer to make a guess.
Could anyone replying, if possible, provide a link to the cable required (if possible).
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

I do not think it would be a good idea to connect an iMac G5 to that TV. First reaosn being that the signal coming out of an iMac is VGA, which is analog, and turning analog to digital is not exactly a good idea. That TV has DVI in, (Digital Video Interface). You would not be getting that great of quality if you ended up splitting the VGA into composite video, the yellow white and red cables. Your friend's best bet would be to get either, a Mac mini, Powermac G5, or a Powerbook. Keep in mind if he gets a Powerbook 12 inch he will need a mini DVi to regular DVI adaptor, which does not affect quality. Quite frankly the iMac is the worst choice for this application. If you could find a TV that utilizes VGA, that would greatly improve the situation, but since he owns the tv already that would not exactly be conveniant. The iBook would also be a bad choice, because it has VGA out. If you do not want to dish out the crazy amount of money for the PMG5, then get a powerbook, the performance isn't much different compared to the G5 iMac. If I were your friend, I would wait for an update to the iMac line, or Powerbook. I have an IMac right now and I have ran into weird little minor issues. This probably isn't the best computer Apple makes right now. Powerbooks are very good.

  • IMac HDMI 'Mirroring' problems with LG 'Full HD' TV

I have my 20” aluminium iMac connected via a mini-DVI/HDMI adapter to my LG 32LF7700 full HD LCD TV. In mirroring mode it’s pretty good, but I have two problems.
    1. Even when I turn ‘Mirroring’ off from my Mac’s displays ‘Menu’ options I still have the ‘Snow Leopard’ desktop background on my TV, and my iMac’s mouse will not stay within the iMac screen area. The mouse can still move off the iMac screen into the TV area. Is there any way, apart from unplugging the TV HDMI cable, to revert fully to the iMac screen when I turn ‘Mirroring’ off?
    2. When playing movies in 16x9 ‘full screen’ on the iMac the image is not quite full screen on my TV. I had a ‘HD ready’ TV before the LG one and it was possible to fill the screen. Am I missing something in the settings that would make 16’x9 full screen’ on the iMac give me ‘full screen’ on my TV. My TV is PAL, 1080p (or 1080i), and is properly detected by the iMac.
    Thanks.

    Perhaps you misunderstand the two display process with a Mac. There are only two modes;
Mirroring is when both screens display the same thing, so your HDTV is just perhaps providing a larger version of the iMac display for using from across the room. The other is Extended Desktop mode, which creates a wide Mac Desktop that extends from one display to the other, based on which order that you have arranged the two display icons in Sys Prefs/Displays. This is why your mouse will travel from one display to the other as it travels across this wide Desktop.
In addition to the order that you have arranged these Desktops, you can choose which one is primary by dragging the Menubar from one icon to the other in Sys Prefs/Displays.
As far as watching videos, I d not have two monitors upon which to test this, but I believe that you can adjust the two displays screen resolutions separately in Sys Prefs/Displays.
If you go to the Help menu in the Finder choose Mac Help. After it opens click the index in the upper right and go to D/Displays. You will find some explanations about using multiple displays with your iMac, including Extended and Mirrored modes.

    Hi
Please check in your graphic card settings if the option: Full Screen (no border) has been chosen.
This can be found in Aspect Ration Options.
Ive got a U400 with Intel graphic chip and this option is available there.
Furthermore some notebooks support an additional BIOS option where the screen could be set to full screen (no borders)

  • IMac 20" A1224 (EMC 2133) LCD bright grey but no video

    Hi All,
I have an iMac 20" A1224 (EMC 2133) LCD boots up bright grey but no video, not even the able logo or spinning gear. After waiting the normal amount of time, the machine responds to keyboard input, i.e., I can change screen brightness and get the machine to beep at me by hitting various keys. I attach the external monitor and it works perfectly.. shows the desktop background after the computer boots up. I even booted the machine up to Ubuntu 11.04 GNU/Linux and was able to surf the Internet while looking at the externally attached display. All the while, the iMac LCD stays bright grey. The only time I see even so much as a flicker is when the computer boots up to GNU/Linux, where it flickers quickly once but then returns to bright grey.
I've checked all the connections, I've run the command+option+p+r, I've unplugged the machine for over 12 hours and held the power button in and turned on power (to reset SMU), and I've disconnected the hard drive (shows a blinking folder if I have the external monitor attached and boot with the LVDS cable detached). I've even checked the LED lights - all four are lit.
    Very Frustrating!
So now I'm left with trying to swap out parts.. An expensive idea to say the least!
    $24 Apple 922-8167 Cable, LVDS
    $250 ATI Radeon GPU
    $190 Apple iMac Intel 20" LCD Screen M201EW02 v.B
Does anyone know a way that I can test to make sure which part to replace?
    Thanks!
    Shannon VanWagner
    humans-enabled

Oh and for those who might end up in this same situation... I was able to get the externally attached monitor to be the main screen by first unplugging the LVDS connection (from the LCD display to the motherboard), then booting with the external monitor on and attached. This is nice because now I'm able to use the computer as normal (while viewing it in the external monitor), and I can run a time machine backup. I tried mirroring displays, gathering windows, changing the resolution and brightness and nothing has yet brought back the video on the LCD panel.
I still wish there was some type of testing software to check the GPU and tell me it's working perfectly... because then I could purchase the replacement LVDS cable / replacement LCD with confidence that replacing those items would fix the problem. Apple should attach these LCD panels with a DVI or HDMI connection internally... this way one could always (and easily) attach a monitor to the main output port and be able to easily isolate whether a video problem exists with the LCD/cable, or the GPU/Logic Board.
Also, what's up with the replacement ATI GPU being $250+? That's ridiculous because I can buy a decent 3d-gaming capable PCI-X 3d graphics card for my GNU/Linux computer for about $80.

  • Connect imac wirelessly, or use direct connection?

I have a new imac G5 with airport extreme card, and will soon have an extreme base station (havent set it up yet). Can I count on the wireless connection to be as fast as my roadrunner cable direct connection? Or should I connect the imac directly?
ino, how much slower will the wireless be than the direct ethernet hookup?
    thanks,
    imac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Your AirPort Extreme connection will provide sufficient bandwidth to take full advantage of your high speed internet connection. If you were to do file transfers inside you network (to another computer on the LAN), the ethernet connection will provide much higher transfer speeds to other ethernet connected computers.

  • How do I connect my MacBook Pro to an LCD TV (with HDMI and S-Video ports)?

How do I connect my MacBook Pro to an LCD TV (with HDMI and S-Video ports)?  I assume I would need to use the DVI to Video adapter that came with my computer to connect to my LCD tv.  I'm just not sure which port I should use on the TV.  The HDMI port is being used for digital cable.
Also, does anyone know if this can be done wirelessly?

For a 2010+ MBP you can connect with a Displayport to HDMI, which will include Audio.
With older MBP you will need a displayport to HDMI, if you want audio to the actually TV, then you will need to get a cable with either digital out from MBP to the HDMI, or USB audio mixed into the HDMI

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

Please let me know, as I don't want to waste money on the new MBP if it isn't able to connect with my large external display (without problems).
    Thanks,
    Zac

Hi. I wanted your help on choosing the best settings for my external display. I currently have it out to HDMI on my 37" LCD Toshiba.
I tried to display without "mirroring" but if i dont the display on my tv is too large - very simlar to a zoomed in look. When i mirror the screen i can not see the top bar.
Video looks great on the screen.
I want my tv to display similar to a computer monitor!
    Many thanks,
    Tim
