Connect to two networks?

I'm using my next door neighbors wi-fi (splitting the bill with him). I'm trying to use my AE in (Bridge? mode) connected to my Lacie external harddrive. I set up the AE "internet" for "Off (bridge mode)" and my external harddrive shows up under "disks".
My problem right now is that I don't know how to connect to both the neighbors Wi-fi internet network and my AE to wirelessly access my external harddrive? Is it possible to connect to two networks? Or is there a better way of doing this?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello ianbroste. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In order to "combine" networks, your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) would have to be configured to extend the wireless range of your neighbor's router. This would (potentially) only work if his router is also another 802.11n AirPort.

  • Connecting to two networks at the same time

    Hi Kadin,
I am looking for the same answer for a long time. I have two situations that requires to connect to two different metworks and that is when I travel with my portable Linksys router WRT54GC .
    1. I stay at a hotel with a wireless Internet network connection and I try to use the network to access the Internet and then (2) I also need to access my external Maxtor harddrive to which I am connected through my portable router WRT54GC .
    2. I have an almost identical situation but instead of the hotel network now I have a brand new T-Mobil cell phone made by ITC, which is called Wings and it uses a new way to connect my laptop to the Internet by using a Windows Mobile 6 Internet-share connection, which basically connects my laptop to the T-Mobile network and assigns it a IP address.
The problem that I have is that in both cases I can connect to each one of the networks separately but not simultaneously.
Any advise as to how this can be done. I also tried the Wireless WET54G as a bridge with similar negative results.
    Thanks,
    Pole

Ok not real clear on your setup, but here is the "networking answer" why you can not connect to two networks.
A device must have an IP address on the same subnet of the device you want to establish a connection or an IP route must be known to the network routers, since your internal address are most likely in the reserved private range, no internet router is not going to know how to deliver the packets to the correct hosts.
the simple answer is assign a secondary IP address to the network adapter on your laptop.
In the windows IP address properties for secondary address you can not set a default gateway. Windows only has 1 default gateway.

  • Connect to two networks, ethernet(LAN w/o internet), wireless(w/ internet)

so i'm trying to connect to two networks, a wireless and a wired one
the wireless(which connect to an access point) is a network which allows me to connect to internet, and the wired(regular router) one is a small home local network, which does not connect to internet.
if i just have the wireless one on, unplug/disable wired one, i can connect to internet just fine, but if i do plug in ethernet cable, then all of the sudden i can't connect to internet anymore.
in my Network Coonections window, it does show that the wireless one has "Access to Network and Internet" while the wired one has "Access to Network only". I'd assume that the computer is smart enough to find its way to internet, but apparently not.
is there a way to set a preference, so vista tries to find internet conncetion thru wireless first, before go on to the wired network?
I konw this is technically possible, because on my mac, i can set in such way that it takes certain connection first
    thanks in advance

I think I am getting it but still no joy.
On the WiFi connection to FIOS Router I have manually set metric to 1.
On Same PC in Ethernet I have removed gateway and set a metric to 10.
Before I did this connection to Internet was very slow when the Ethernet cable plugged in and Interface Enabled. After removing gateway and setting metrics access to Internet AOK.
I have working Homegroup, network printer but no Internet access from Hardwired PC.
Cannot ping FIOS router @ 192.168.1.1 from hardwired PC. Destination host unreachable.
NMAP Quick Scan 192.168.1.* never sees 192.168.1.1
So, I'm still not routing properly.

  • Is there a way to connect to two networks simultaneously?

    Here is my scenario:
I am an audio technician who travels from venue to venue for work have to constantly switch between two networks to do my job.  I use MAC OS w/ the most current version 10.9
    Example:
99% of the time, there is venue provided wireless internet via DHCP, w/ no wired option available.  I log onto it for all my internet related productivity.  At the same time, I need to stay connected to a manual/static ip local network to remote & monitor audio hardware (wireless mic's, dsp drives, mixing consoles, etc).  I have the ability to use either a wired or wireless connection for the local manual network (new airport express, or wired line).
I go to my network preferences in my system prefs and can see a green confirmation indicator that both networks are indeed connected.  However, depending on which network i give priority to by "setting service order", the other network drops.  For example, today Im using a wired line to remote/monitor my audio systems on my manual/static ip network and can stay connected as long as i set my ethernet connection at the top of the 'service order' list.  As soon as I go to launch my Safari browser it says I am no longer connected to the internet, eventhough my network system preferences show I am still connected.  The only way I can get the internet to connect is to reset the 'service order' and put wi-fi back on top.  As soon as I do this though, my manual wired audio network loses it's connection.
I should note some settings.  Today's networks:
    wireless (internet):
    ip: 10.100.1.159
    sm: 255.255.0.0
    router: 10.100.255.254
    wired (audio network):
    ip: 192.168.0.128
    sm: 255.255.255.0
    router: 192.168.0.1
Is there a way to stay connected to both, regardless of the 'service order'?  I have a brand new airport express if putting something like that in-line helps in anyway.
    Best,
    Brian

Is there a way to stay connected to both, regardless of the 'service order'?
There can only be one active connection at any given time, no matter how many networks you may be connected to.

  • Can't open TCP connection when two network adapter are enabled

    Hi all,
I've an applicaiton that connect using "TCP Open Connection". The applicaiton is running on a computer have two network adapters configured to be on two different network.
When I start the application, if both network adapters are enabled, connection is not created (timeout). When I disable the network adapter which is not configured for the network I need, connection is succesfull.
    - How can I choose which adapter to use to open the connection, as LabView seems enable to select the good one.
    - Or I can I disable a network adapter (just for the connection time)
I'm using LabView 8.5 Full on Windows XP.
    Thanks for your help

This is generally a routing issue. The OS will route connections to your primary network if it is not a direct route. For example, one network is 10.3.4.x (primary network) and the other is 192.168.1.x.with a subnet of 255.255.255.0. Now, let's say you want to reach a device with an 192.168.2.x address. The OS will try to route this through the primary network but is has no route to reach the 192.168.2.x subnet. Therefore your connection fails. You can add a permanent route to your computer to force specific address ranges to specific NICs. Use the ROUTE ADD command which is part of the OS. If you are trying to reach the computer using a name instead of the IP address the issue is basically the same but a but more challenging to resolve. The OS will do th elookup on your defined DNS servers. They generally do not have knowledge of local private networks and therefore can't resolve the name. In this case you need to create a more involved network infrastructure to update the name server. Probably not something that is feasible to do.

  • Connectivity to two networks simultaneously?

    Hello!
A co-worker has a new 27" (early December) iMac (10.8.5) with one Ethernet port, two Thunderbolt Ports, and four USB ports. This replaced a G5 tower (10.6.8) with two Ethernet ports, etc.
While on the G5, she had no problem maintaining connection to the company network (for file-sharing and internet connection) and to a local plate-writing station (for printing purposes) that was set up as a second network. (IT staff didn't want it on the company network.)
The set-up we have going for the iMac now is to use a Thunderbolt-to-GigaEthernet adapter for access to the company network/internet and the Ethernet cable to the second networkl/plate-writing station. Thus, in the Network Preferences > Location: Automatic,  we've pointed the Thunderbolt port using Automatic DHCP to the company network and the Ethernet port with Manual settings for the IP, Subnet, and Router to the separate plate-writing station.
Our problem is that when she works with one, she loses connection to the other!
Our solution at present is to set up two separate Locations in the Network Preferences so she can toggle back and forth between the company network and the plate-writing station as needed. But she uses both frequently and running to the Network Preferences all the time is a bit of a hassle—especially since she had simultaneous access to both as needed on the old Mac.
Is it possible with the equipment have to maintain two simultaneous connections between the two networks without toggling between one or the other? How would we do that? Or is there a better way to set up the preferences? Or have we maximized our available options?
Let me know if there are parts to the puzzle I seem to have left out. Thanks for looking in!

    Hi,
I have, in Mavericks, had the need to maintain an Airport/wifi Connection to another Mac whilst using Ethernet (instead of Wifi) on this Mac.
We had a power cut and the router suddenly stopped doing WiFi.
The MacBook Pro I have was further away from the Ethernet hub so I Shared the Internet using Ethernet to Wifi.
I had not tried it but I am sure I could "Share" from the MacBook Pro over Ethernet ( direct cable) and maintain the WiFi the iMac normally uses.
    Thunderbolt can do many things.
It can support hard Drive and Displays as well as "Bridge" connection to a network.

  • Am I connected to two networks?

I have an airport extreme that is connected to my router.  My iMac is connected to the extreme via ethernet.  Network preferences say that I am connected to the network via ethernet and airport.  I only want to be connected through ethernet, but I cant tun airport off because I need it for my wireless devices. How do I disconnect from the wireless network without turning airport off?

After speaking to an apple rep, I'm only connected to one network depending on how I set their priority in system preferences.

  • Can I be connected to two networks at the same time?

    Hi there
I have an imac desktop with 10.5.8 running. I have a wireless network with my timecapsule and a printer connected to it. We have two mac computers in the house
that print wirelessly via this network. I also have the internet coming in via a wireless modem/wifi which both computers use to go online. The trouble is everytime I want to print from either computer I have to change back and forth from the internet/network to the timecapsule/printer network. This is really fumbly and I wind up having to restart all the time because the printer gets locked up. It's just a big hassle. Is there any way I can be on both of these networks at the same time or is there some other way I can configure this?
    Thanks!

Is there any way I can be on both of these networks at the same time or is there some other way I can configure this?
Yes, you can reconfigure the Time Capsule (TC) to "Join a wireless network." In this case the wireless network would be the one created by the other wireless Internet router. In this configuration, the TC can still share its internal (and external) hard drive and a printer attached to the USB port. However, note that this would disable the TC as a router and an Ethernet switch so basically it will perform as a wireless client.

  • Connecting to two networks

At work I have a windows PC connected to a secure network (ethernet), and an iMac connected to the internet via wifi. I have to give these two machines access to the same files (rather large media files). Moving a USB-disk is a bit of a hassle.
Can I make the iMac connect to the internet with wifi, and at the same time access a NAS (in the secure network) with ethernet?

    Similar situation here.
I run a small semi-private business within a bigger company. Due to company policies, internet access is really slow and crippled, and as such unusable. So I rented an additional phone line and installed a wifi DSL modem for wireless internet access with my Mac Book Pro. I also have an available ethernet socket on the wall, connected to the company network (plus a company PC plugged to a second ethernet socket).
Here is what I'd like to achieve:
My Mac accesses the internet wirelessly through the DSL modem (subnet 192.168.0.x, gateway 192.168.0.1 as usual, DHCP or not for the Mac IP adress, WAN IP adress irrelevant and dynamic...).
At the same time, I'd like to be able to connect one of the company's network drive through the Mac ethernet adapter connected to the wall socket (different subnet of course, ethernet adapter IP assigned by company DHCP).
Provided I can overcome company objections and get all necessary authorisations, is this technically feasable ?

  • Connect to two networks at once

    Hi
Im currently using a macmini where I work, it connects to the wirless network in my room with the airport. This network has some restrictions, meaning that some wirless syncing I would like to do with my iphone is not possible. Therefore if I want to sync stuff from my phone (like 'Things' app) I have to create an adhoc network, which is a pain to do.
I would like to have an airport express connected by ethernet to my mac set up with its own wireless network, essentially just an adhoc network to my mac. Then I could have my iphone connect to that to do the syncing, yet still have computer internet access through works wifi. It could be on all the time and I wouldn't have to go through the hassel of setting up a adhoc network everytime I wanted to syn (as many as 1O times a day).
    Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Sam

I knew that, that's why I wanted to mac to be connected to the airport express by network cable. So the mac airport is connected to the company wifi and the macs ethernet is connected to the airport. Would that be possible?

  • Two network connections

  • How should I connect these two AirPort networks?

    Hi all,
I have had to reset both of my networks; one an AirPort Extreme and the other an AirPort Express. As it stands, the Extreme has a USB printer and a NAS drive connected to it, while the Express is my gateway to the internet. Right now I have to switch networks to either access the internet, or print.
I'm open to suggestions on how to connect these two networks. My goal is to be able to printer, connect to the internet, and connect to the NAS drive without switching networks.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Ed

One option would be to configure both of your base stations in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). In this type of configuration, you'll be able to both access the Internet and/or print without having to change wireless networks.

  • Connecting two networks with two internet connections

    Hi All
The situation is this. Two firms situated next door to each other and linked by their businesses and by their family ties, wish to connect their two networks together. They both have internet connections. The reason is for security, in the event of one internet going down they can use the other one.
As I see it, we could use a wireless bridge/repeater to connect the two ethernets together, turn off DHCP in both networks, and manually configure the IP addresses on one network to say 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.100 and set the gateway as the router address in that network, again manually allocated. Then on the other network set the scope to 192.168.1.101 to 192.168.1.200 with the router on that network set in this range.
In the event of failure of one internet connection, it would just require the gateway to be changed for those pcs to access the router on the other network.  I know of a little program which would do that automatically.
Would this work? If so which Linksys equipment would I need to bridge the two networks. I know some equipment will do the bridging and allow wireless clients to connect, so that would be useful, I know it slows it down by half, but this might be acceptable.
Will there be other problems rearing their ugly heads which I haven't considered.
The networks are not large, so manual IP configuration is not a problem.
    Thanks

I presume both networks are using wireless connections.  If you can see your neighbour's network on your computer and vice versa, all you need is the passphrase to connect.  You may have to disable filter mac address in your router.

  • T1 Router connection to remote network - Wireless Solution please?

Can someone please provide me with advice on how to setup a network across multiple buildings using wireless technology. We are a non-profit organization that deals with rehabilitating your most unwanted troubled teens. Our campus consists of multiple "cottages" and little office buildings. We have a T1 connection to the internet that is housed out our main office building. We would like to connect the training facility which is 100 ft away from the office building that houses our Cisco T1 Router without having to lay cable. The training facility is already network via a network hub. The main office building is also networked via a Cisco 24 port switch - is there a way we can connect the two networks without using cable? We were looking into the new 802.11a wireless technology to bridge the two networks together.
Please provide your comments and suggestions.
    Thank you.

I have done what you wanted many times. I run connections all over town. My longest connection is soon to be from the top of the tallest building in town, 635 ft, to the top of a tower (300 ft) across town. This connection will be over 15 miles. I also provide the internet connection for the county. They have 2 radios to give them up to 20Mbits of bandwidth when they need to burst that high.
Anyway, what you want to do is simple. Use a BR-352 with 128 bit WEP. Although Cisco equipment is secure, the Bridge mode (versus the Access point mode) allows for one more level of security (the bridges run under a Cisco protocol and the hackers running around with ‘Netstumbler’ typically do not have a $1500 bridge to do their ‘war driving’). If you want to ability to connect with laptops (while you roam in the general area) and desktops, you will need to put your bridge in access point mode (note that this is still secure).
Since your application is building to building, you will probably need 50-150 feet of cable (unless you put the radio in a weather protected box next to the antenna). You can kill your system if you do not do this right. You want your radio as close to the antenna as possible. You need to use LMR-400 for short runs or LMR-600 for longer runs (I use LMR-600 or large cable for all of my runs, and stopped using LMR-400 all together). The LMR-XXX waveguide has loss. You MUST MINIMIZE loss. You can add an amplifier if the situation dictates, but you must still minimize loss. You want to use directional antennas when possible. You want the highest gain antennas you can find (the more directional, the more gain… i.e. a 6 degree beam width grid antenna has more gain then a 30 degree beam width yagi). I do not use Cisco antennas. The selection is not good.
    Basic configuration:
Radio BR-352 Bridge (Always get and use 128 bit WEP encryption)
    to
Adapter to jumper from Cisco RTNC (Reverse TNC) connector to a standard N-Type connector
    To
    Lightning arrestor
    To
    LMR-600 waveguide
    To
    Antenna
    Add an amplifier if necessary
    Special Tools and Parts:
    LMR-600 crimping tool
    LMR-600 N-male ends
Waterproofing (you get water in your cable and you might as well throw it away… and it is tough to trouble shoot too)
Grounding Kit for LMR-600 (you ground your cable just before it enters the building
    Cat-5e

  • Connecting 2 MPLS networks together

Need some advice on connecting 2 MPLS networks together from two different ISPs. The compnay I am working with is using AT&T MPLS and they aquired a smaller company using SBC MPLS. We want to connect the two networks together for the shorterm and eventually the goal would be to add te new sites to the AT&T MPLS.

    You have two options here,
    1) you can talk to you SP regarding the situation and they should be able to put across a inter-AS solution for you, and this should be possible looking at the close ties between ATnT and SBC.
    2) If you plan to go ahead with this on your own, since its only a transitionary situation, you can think of interconnecting both the networks core at the closest possible location terming them as border gateway routers. And then keep migrating the smaller companies sites to the your existing SP's network.
But do note that if there are overlapping IP addresses between both the networks then you may have to consider a NAT gateway in addition to the border gw routers. If you plan to use the Inter-as option, the SP would have a NAT gw solution for the same.
Overall you need a crystal clear plan before you go ahead with any of the options.
