Connect X2-10GB-LR to 10GBASE-SR

Good day,
Is it possible to connect X2-10GB-LR to 10GBASE-SR with 4-5 metre patch cord?
Cisco X2-10GB-LR
The Cisco 10GBASE-LR Module supports a link length of 10 kilometers on standard single-mode fiber (SMF, G.652).

Not possible.  You need to use modules with the same wavelengths, i.  e.  SR to SR or LR to LR.

  • Why does my 10GB iSCSI setup seem see such high latency and how can I fix it?

I have a iscsi server setup with the following configuration
    Dell R510
    Perc H700 Raid controller
    Windows Server 2012 R2
    Intel Ethernet X520 10Gb
    12 near line SAS drives
I have tried both Starwind and the built in Server 2012 iscsi software but see similar results.  I am currently running the latest version of starwinds free
    iscsi server.
I have connected it to a HP 8212 10Gb port which is also connected via 10Gb to our vmware servers.  I have a dedicated vlan just for iscsi and have enabled
    jumbo frames on the vlan.
I frequently see very high latency on my iscsi storage.  So much so that it can timeout or hang vmware.  I am not sure why.  I can run IOmeter and
    get some pretty decent results.
I am trying to determine why I see such high latency 100'ms.  It doesn't seem to always happen, but several times throughout the day, vmware is complaining
about the latency of the datastore.  I have a 10Gb iscsi connection between the servers.  I wouldn't expect the disks to be able to max that out.  The highest I could see when running IO meter was around 5Gb.  I also don't see much load
at all on the iscsi server when I see the high latency.  It seems network related, but I am not sure what settings I could check.  The 10Gb connect should be plenty as I said and it is no where near maxing that out.
Any thoughts about any configuration changes I could make to my vmware enviroment, network card settings or any ideas on where I can troubleshoot this.  I
am not able to find what is causing it.  I reference this document and for changes to my iscsi settings

If both StarWind and MSFT target show the same numbers I can guess it's network configuration issue. Anything higher then 30 ms is a nightmare :( Did you properly tune your network stacks? What numbers (x-put and latency) you get for raw TCP numbers (NTtcp
and Iperf are handy to show)?
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • 10GB SFP+ Direct Attached cables between 2 servers (crossover, support?)

    Yes,
It is supported. If for some reason it does not work reboot the server. Best would be to get the cables from Intel as well.

I am trying looking everywhere for this answer.
I am speccing out new servers and plan on have a direct connection between 2 of them. They are going to be sharing a lot of data together. I would like to have them connected via 10GB SFP+ adapters using direct attach copper. Basically using the copper as a crossover.
Is this supported? The plan is to have an Intel X520-DA1 single port adapter (PCIe card, not mezzanine) in each server.

  • Dell Powerconnect 6248 1gb and 10gb "redundant" Links

Hello,I have two powerconnect 6248 switches on separate floors that are currently linked with a 1gb fiber. This environment was setup prior to me joining this team.We have noticed that we are saturating the 1gb line and need to go to a 10gb link. The building is already cabled with a 10gb aqua fiber bundle that runs about 220 meters, and we have purchased the appropriate sfp+ modules and fiber patch cables. We need to make this switch with little to no downtime and the proposed solution by the prior sysadmin was to connect the 10gb link and leave the 1gb link as failover. To give a little background on the switch environment, there are 4 vlans including the default vlan 1 and all vlans are tagged on the ports for the 1gb link. STP is enabled on both switches. So I disabled the sfp+ ports, plugged the fiber cables in, and set the ports to...

    Hi Ross,
The only rack servers which we support to be connected to the UCS FI are the C series servers. One of the reasons being they running the CIMC which the UCSM uses to manage and configure the rack server (almost like the way we do with our blades).

  • 10G-Ethernet RJ45 (10GBASE-T) and direct attached SFP+ Twinax (10GBASE-CR)?

    Hello,
    I'm searching a switch that does support 10G-Ethernet RJ45 (10GBASE-T) and direct attached SFP+ Twinax (10GBASE-CR).
I do not have big requirements, but it should be as cheap as possible.

Would like to connect an SFP+ port to 10GBASE-T port?
Maybe a media converter is enough for your demand.

  • 4900M connection to HP Virtual Connect Flex 10

Trying to connect a HP-C7000 blade server with a Virtual Connect Flex 10 connection with 10Gb links to a Catalyst 4900M.
I have no control of the HP side. From the HP guide, we are following "HP Virtual Connect Ethernet Cookbook" "Scenario 1:5 - VLAN Tagging (802.1q) with Shared Uplink Set (SUS) with Link Aggregation using LACP (802.3ad) - VMware ESX"
On the 4900M, LLDP sees the Virtual Connect and LCAP up with 2 active links. Show interface on Ten1/1, Ten1/2, Port-Channel 1 shows 0 packets input.
Basically, we can not get any packets from the HP Server/VMware server side through the Catalyst 4900.
    IOS version: 12.2(54)SG
    Switch ports are as follows:
    interface Port-channel1
    description HP FLEX-10-VC
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 4,8,10,11,16,22-24,69,99-101,156,192,300,500
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport nonegotiate
    spanning-tree portfast trunk
    interface TenGigabitEthernet1/1
    description HP FLEX-10-VC
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 4,8,10,11,16,22-24,69,99-101,156,192,300,500
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport nonegotiate
    spanning-tree portfast trunk
    channel-protocol lacp
    channel-group 1 mode active
    interface TenGigabitEthernet1/2
    description HP FLEX-10-VC
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 4,8,10,11,16,22-24,69,99-101,156,192,300,500
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport nonegotiate
    spanning-tree portfast trunk
    channel-protocol lacp
    channel-group 1 mode active

This command starts passing traffic on all of the VLANs using the trunk. If the Flex Connect sees layer-1 come up but is unable to pass traffic it may think the interface is not working. I enable this on trunk connections to VMware hosts and Flex Connect interfaces. It is possible disabling portfast will not cause problems for the Flex Connect interfaces. You can test this in your environment and see what works.

  • How do I write/use performance monitor to run an action when something happens?

I notice that I get a popup if desktop resources are over-used asking me if I want to turn off the glass desktop.
    That's fine.
I've been looking in Performance Monitor for how this is done, as I have a program that periodically runs amok and starts indexing my Documents directory.  I usually start to notice my machine getting sluggish when the process gets to about 1.5-2+GB
in Virtual and working memory.  At that point it seems to be increasing it's network usage rate geometically, and interrups will start getting delayed or lost -- keyboard will lock up for periods, lots of things freezing temporarily (music will get 10-20
second dropouts)  It can even cause a complete system lockup
So what I would like to do is monitor any instance of this process by name ('explorer'), and restart it when it gets to over 1.5GB of usage.
I setup a monitor of virtual size and working memory in the performance monitor, but I don't see how to set up an alarm that starts an action to restart it.  (restarting it will cause the problem to go away for anywhere from a few hours to several days).
I've no clue as to what triggers it.

Question is, how can I setup it for calling a trigger script when
parameters for Explorer get out of spec.
On confusing issue that stopped me from proceeding, was the time schedule to run the report:
    I only allows for once/day.
I need / want continuous monitorying -- say at 1 minute or 3 minute intervals (5 might work, not sure -- doesn't take long for Explorer to get to 1-2G with a network connection of 10Gb.
So how can I monitor and control it?
    A side issue -- I notice a resource-control agent for Win 2008 -- but this was disabled for Win7.
Anyone know why resource usage on Win7 was considered less important than on Win2k8 server?
My version of Win7 is Win7-x64-sp1 "Ultimate" [sic] (it doesn't include professional features like resource control)...
Thanks...This has bothered me for over a year and has persisted through new profiles and reinstalls of of the OS.
I have a feeling it is related to MS disabling Network disks in their indexer, so Explorer ends up doing it as a surrogage for things like the search engine (with the results not stored, because they are not local -- the worst of both worlds?)... but that's
    just a feeling...
    Thanks!
    Astara...

You can create a Data Collector Set (create manually, not template), then choose performance counter Alert, configure alert actions, from the script, seems you want to monitor the “physicalDisk” performance, so you can set the “physicalDiskCounters”
into alert action, please follow the instruction in the link below.

If you want to view the detailed process related about explorer when your machine getting sluggish, I'd like to introduce a tool named process explorer to you.

It can clearly show you the processes running in your system, along with the hierarchical relationship and the cpu usage.

Hey together,we are currently searching for a new Backup Software Solution and I wondered if one of you could help me..Our situation is the following:4 physical Servers
One of them with our productive Data ( 53TB of Files, Videos, Music, InDesign, PSD,...)
Second one with User Profiles and temporary Stuff and Applications
One production Server (just Bare Metal Recovery needed)

The Storage itself has not really any functions but basically creating a RAID. We are using Infortrends FC-Raid Systems. So there...

  • Trunk port vs Access port speed

I am setting up a 4900M for a temporary training class, for 1Gb connected client PCs.  I used a 10Gb interface with an X2-10G-SR which will connect via 62.5 micron fiber, to a 4948 10Gb interface with an SFP-10Gb-SR.  As for the config, I have the 4900M te1/1 setup as an access port to the 4948.  The connectivity is fine, as is the routing.  But when we use the client PCs disk connectivity (connecting to 10Gb storage) we get great read speeds but when it tries writing it slows down and eventually errors out.
Question 1:  Would it make a difference if the 4900M was connected via a trunk port to the 4948?
I believe the issue is the length of the 62.5 fiber, and the maximum transmit\receive length of the transceivers, but I want to rule out the switchport configuration.

Thanks.  You were correct, as changing the port configuration from access to trunk produced the same R/W speeds.  The issue was with the fiber run being too long for the SR trancievers.

  • Fiber loss

We have a new site coming online connected to our core network. The site is 4 miles away and we have dark fiber. We are connecting dual 10Gb links and are using 10g-lr-s sfps. The core has 6509s and the site is using 3850s. There is an Lc-Lc fiber patch cable on each side.  When I run the tranceiver details command on the tengigabit interfaces the receive strength is around -16dBm. How much will that value affect the traffic?  The value is the same in the 6509s as in the 3850s.

With -16dbm you should be fine.
What power level should a source have?
It depends on the type of source. When coupled into a good test cable, the source output power will be in these ranges:
LED: -10 to -25 dBm into 62.5/125 fiber
Telcom/LAN laser: 0 to -13 dBm into singlemode fiber, to +20 dBm with DWDM and fiber amplifier systems
CATV Laser : +16 to 0 dBm into singlemode fiber
What power level should a receiver see?
It depends on the network and type of source. When measured at the end of the network cable, the source output power will usually be in these ranges:
    LAN/LED: -20 to -35 dBm into 62.5/125 fiber
Telcom/LAN laser: -20 to -45 dBm into singlemode fiber
CATV Laser : 0 to -10 dBm into singlemode fiber

  • SG500X Dropped packets

I have been having issues for a long time with the SG500X units. I keep getting many "Drop Events", or dropped packets (as seen in the attachment). There are no real "errors" or issues that I can see otherwise. I have 2 stacked SG500X-48 port switches connected with 10GB cables. I have 13 different LAG groups that span the 2 switches (8 are down-links to SG200 switches for clients). I have 2 physical vmware boxes, and 1 SAN connected with 10GB cables. I have one main physical server that almost everyone accesses to connect to a foxpro database. The drops happen on the highest utilization ports, especially the physical server that is running foxpro. There are about 100 users total (connected to the SG200's).
Any ideas? I have gone through the configurations multiple times with Cisco, and with others. But no change. I have tried everything to correct.

    Hi Aleksandra,
Thank you for replying. Boot version is 1.3.7.01, and firmware is 1.3.7.18.
I know there is a newer version, but I have applied about 5 new firmware versions over the last 2 years to try to fix this. I will upgrade soon, but it is a bigger process now that SAN and vmware boxes are tied together over these switches.
EDIT: Of note is that the drops are on the highest utilization ports (vmware, SAN, and a very busy server hosting a foxpro database). We have been thinking it is a buffer issue onthe switch (whether a switch issue or us exceeding its capacity, though not sure how), but have not been able to confirm that.

  • X2-10G-LX4 and SFP-10G-SR

    Hi
    Issue 1
I have a 6506-E with WS-X6708-10Gig Modules and i have installed X2-10G-LX4 transceiver on them, on the other side i have a UCS 6120 and installed a SFP-10G-SR.
The link between the 2 does not come up,  what could be the reason for that? The distance between the 2 is 10 meters and i have already tried changing the cables.
    Issue 2
If i connect the WS-X6708-10Gid module with X2-10GB-LR module and connect it to X2-10GB-LR on another 6506-E, the link comes up. that means there is no problem with the Module or the ios on the switch.
but if connect X2-10GB-LX4 on 6506-E and X2-10GB-LX4 on the other side, the link does not come up. Any clue what could be the reason ? I have already tried changing the transceiver.
    Can someone please help ?

You have got answer for first issue that LX4 cannot work with SR. By the way what kind of fiber you have Single Mode/Multimode?
    second issue,
If your X2-10GB-LRmodule have worked then i can assume that you have single mode fiber for testing as LR is only for Single mode fiber .
LX4 is only made for Multimode fiber and it is not going to work on single mode fiber no matter what you try (as you are saying link is not comming up).
Cisco X2-10GB-LRM is the only module which can work for Single mode and Multimode (ofcourse you need Mode conditioning patchchord )

  • MBP i7 17" wont boot from external CD/DVD

I have installed a second hardrive in my mbp using the optibay. Since then ive been trying to install windows on the second harddrive, but it wont boot from the windows cd. After some testing, it turns out it wont boot -any- cd from an external cd/dvd drive.
When i put in a bootable cd and boot with the option key, it does recognize the cd. When i select it, it starts spinning up, stops, and i get a grey screen with an flashing apple/failed sign.
I have already tried the following:
    - Reset PRAM
    - Use the superdrive i removed as USB cd/dvd drive
    - Use a different USB cd/dvd drive
    - Tried to boot off a bootable USB memory stick
    - Installed rEFIt boot loader.
    - Tried the (USB) superdrive on a previous model 15" MBP, and it boots without problems.
Im at a loss what else i can try. OS X installed perfectly when the superdrive was still connected to the internal SATA connector, but i dont feel like switching the whole thing back. Not to mention i wont be able to install windows on the secondary drive.
Maybe i could try an ExpressCard SATA controller? Or would that be a waste of time/money? Im also considering installing through target disk mode, but im afraid ill run into all kinds of trouble.
I hope you'll have some ideas!

I think can wrap this up.
The OS X Installer that came with my MBP did work on the external USB superdrive. So it appears the same thing applies for any USB connected device: only OSX installer will boot from it.
As for my initial booting needs: i have successfully installed Windows using bootcamp, though i used a workaround so i didn't have to boot from cd. For anyone who wanders around here and wants to know:
    - Created a 10GB VMWare disk image for Windows
    - Booted windows install disk inside VMWare
    - Upon first reboot i shut down the virtual machine
    - Connected the 10GB VMWare disk image to a Debian virtual machine
    - Ripped mbr using: dd if=/dev/sdb bs=1 count=446 > mbr
    - Copied it to my mac, and installed it to my drive using: fdisk -u -f mbr /dev/rdisk1
    - Copied over the VMWare disk image to my Bootcamp Assistent created partition using: dd if=/dev/sdb1 | ssh root@mymac "dd of=/dev/disk1s3"
    - Used WinClone to make an image of my Bootcamp partition, and immediately restored it. This fixes some windows issues for the new partition, and resizes it to fit your bootcam partition
    - Reboot into windows and the install will continue!
Some tweaking of these commands are needed. If you don't know what you're doing: don't.

  • Cisco 10GBASE X2 and Xenpak Modules- cable connection?

Which cable use for connection between Cisco X2-10GB-SR and Xenpak Modules or 10GBASE XENPAK and 10GBASE XENPAK  (SMF or MMF) ?
Which cable use for connection between 10GBASE XENPAK and 10GBASE XENPAK  (SMF or MMF) ?
I think it is MMF cable.
But my customer test SMF cable with 10GBASE XENPAK and 10GBASE XENPAK  module, they see blue led of those module.
It happen with with one couple module; with another couple of module, it dont happen.
btw, I see this picture in cisco.com (Cisco 10GBASE X2 and Xenpak Modules.jpg), it has yellow cable in the picture.
As I know, yellow cable= SMF cable, orange cable= MMF cable. this thing make me confuse.
    Thank you.

    Dear Tom,
The length of SMF is under 100 meters, it connect from 7th floor to 9th floor. There are patch cord on each floor.
We have tested the connection by direct FO cable (single mode 2 meters) with SFP LRM-to-LRM and LRM-to-LR. Both the test are okay. So it means that the SFP is okay.
We'll check again with looping back the signal from our existing FO.
    Thanks
    Imad
