Connected to "open wireless network" but can't open web pages

Anyone ever to joined a "public" open network but failed to open web pages?
Twice I have entered a hotspot (Texas Highway Dept. Rest Area & an Air Force base recreation hall) and received the "Do you want to join the open network ...." prompt but once joined with full signal strength, I can't open any web pages.
Tried several variations of "Automatic" in Network prefs. I could join the network no problem and always got the green "connected to the internet via Airport" indicator. Same connection setup joins typical hotel and other hotspots no sweat.

Hi Tim-
If your Mac has been sleeping when you pull into the Texas Rest Area, and you hit the 'connect to open network'...
You might want to try a full restart of the mac, and try again.
If this has only happened twice to you (out of how many open networks that have been successful?)...then that's not a bad track record.
DNS is likely the issue, as mentioned here. A cure-all can often be a 'restart the mac', which might make some mac users gasp...gives you a chance to pretend you're a PC

Well, you could install the drivers to the wireless printer in you other computers.

  • Connected to an active network but unable to load web pages

    Hi,
I am using an old Powerbook with OS 10.2.x and am trying to add it to an existing network at home. The network is a DSL/ADSL connection, which is received by a modem and is passed on to a wired/wireless router. I have a PC which connects successfully to the router either by wire or wireless and is able to load web pages.
My Mac, however, does not. It indicates that it is connected to my wireless network, and shows full signal strength. It is assigned an appropriate IP address by the router. However, I cannot load any webpages. All I get is a 'server not found'. This is vexing me, and I have been at it for hours, but no solution.
Let me add that with the same settings, I was able to browse on my Mac also yesterday, but for some reason, I have no luck today. Can someone please indicate what is going on?

I am having the exact same problems. My laptop (Gateway) connects fine to the router, but my Mac does not. They sit right next to each other upstairs. The signal will SOMETIMES come through to my Airport card and when it does it is at full strength, but when i run Safari, nothing. I have tried to enter all the information that my PC has printed out and displayed for me, but i have no clue what half of the things are. and my applecare has expired so the people at Apple will not help which is extremely annoying. Sorry i can't help. But if i find anything i will let you know.

  • Airport is connected to my wireless network, but can't connect to internet

I'm a first time mac user. Earlier today our power went out, and when it came back on, our wireless router reset. We currently have 4 computers that we connect to the internet; 2 of them are Macs, 2 of them are PCS. Both of the PCs are connected to the internet with no problems, but both of the macs refuse. I've run diagnostics on both computers, and it says it can't find an error. I've contacted my provider, and my internet service is not the problem.
It keeps saying that AirPort is connected to the wireless router (my wireless router), but cannot connect to the internet. I've been trying to fix this for over 3 hours now. I work nights, and need my computers for work, so as it sands i'm currently losing money over this Can anyone help please?

    Welcome!
Can you clarify what model iMacs you have? This forum is for the older G4 iMAcs with the articulated monitor and a hemispherical base. However, due to poor forum labeling, many people with newer iMacs are lured to this area. Reset procedures may vary with model so it's important we know which variant you have. Use "About the Mac" in the Apple menu to find your processor type--that should be enough for now.
Once you you figure out the processor type, append it to the equipment info in you profile, Example: it now says "iMac." If you find yours has a G5 processor, change it to read "iMac G5." That will save you a lot of keystrokes down the road.

Is there a way to configure win 8 Laptop to airport express?  I can see the connection to the wireless network, but troubleshooter suggests there's there is no gateway and of course no internet. The connection
shows limited.  Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.  Further, should I simply buy another router for the windows machine?  If I did that, would it interfere with the airport?

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!

I am connected to my wireless network but cannot access the internet. Any ideas?

Your router may not have given your iPad a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc.

Power off and then back on the router
What happens when you enter the network's PW?
Try forgetting/deleting the network if necessary. To do that go to System Preferences>Network>wifi>Advanced and select the network and click on the minus sign

I have a Netgear wndr3400 and I can "join a wireless network" but can not "extend a wireless network" on my Airport express.  Does anyone know why?

Sorry, but "Extend a wireless network" is a proprietary Apple setting that will only work if you have another Apple router.
It is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.

  • Can open adobe reader, but can't open a pdf.

can open adobe reader, but can't open a pdf.  have uninstalled reader 2 times and reinstalled it, but still get same results.  running windows xp.

    Three things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Can connect to protected wireless network, but no speed or connectivity?

I saw other people had this issue as well, but I want to make sure my issue isn't a different subject (sometimes I get lost in the technical jargon). Anyway, since I updated my MBP I have been able to connect to my wireless network (password protected) fine, and it shows I have great signal strength; however, when I attempt to use the internet, only the first pages loads really, after that pages are extremely slow to load (30 seconds, etc), time out, or simple can't connect. I don't know what to do. I can connect to the other open wireless networks. I know it is not the router or my wireless card. Any suggestions?

  • WRT54G v6 - Can Connect to wireless network but can't access internet

Ok, this is my last resort for help. I spent two hours yesterday with linksys "chat" support to no avail.
    First the techincal details:
OS for all machines = Windows XP
Laptop w/two adapters - one wired, one wireless
    WRT54G v6 upgraded with 1.00.9 firmware
    SpeedStream modem from DSL provider
I have manually set the IP, subnet mask, gateway, primary and secondary DNS for my wireless adapter (using the Alternate Configuration in the Internet Protocol Properties of the Wireless Network Connection). When I connect to the wireless network I see that the IP, subnet, gateway and DNS server IPs are all correct (via ipconfig /all).  I see that I am connected to my SSID (11.0 MBps, signal strength Excellent) however I can't access web sites (the server not found message appears in the browser) nor can I ping the router IP or any other IP (LAN or WAN).
My wired PC works fine with this router. My laptop works fine with this router when wired.
Anyone face a similar situation and have a solution?  Thanks.

    A new discovery...
When I disable the wireless security on the router, I am able to connect to the wireless network, ping the router and access the internet.  So, there is apparently something wrong with the WEP security (although I am able to connect to the wireless network when WEP is enabled).
I am thouroughly confused. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Manual then instructs to run runInstaller command. This command however is not being recognized by the system (' No such file or directory' error is thrown) which to my opinion means one of two things: either command is misspelled in the manual or the command file that runs it is missing. I tried it with or without a dot and slash and in small case letters, nothing works.
When I installed similar libraries on Linux I had no problems but all was required there was to place libraries in the proper directory, no command was required.
Maybe same can be done here as well but I am not sure where to place some of the files. I see .h files that should go to /usr/include but see no .so files that on Linux go to /usr/lib. There are some files with .dylib and other .*lib extensions but I'm not sure if they should be copied to /usr/lib or not. And then there are some other files I have no idea what to do with.
Please help!!!No, you can't just drop a few files into a directory and have a working installation (well, I guess technically you could. But technically you could bail all the water out of Lake Superior with a teacup ...)
Sounds like you've covered PATH and current directory issues. What about permissions? What OS account are you using for this installation? (you should have created an account called "oracle" and made it's primary group "dba"). Does that account have execute permissions?

Power down the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait 10 minutes.
Plug it back in. Power it on. Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.

  • IMac PowerMac G4 4,5 Airport is recognizing my wireless network but can't log on

I have a iMac PowerMac G4 4,5 and Airport is recognizing my wireless network but when it ask for password it won't let me change it to WPA2 (which is what my network is on). What is wrong??

Some users have obtained an older AirPort base station to use with vintage computing hardware, so their early 802.11b cards could still get whatever level of 'security' without detracting from later wireless systems for newer devices that use a different protocol or frequency. By use of a different wi-fi for the old stuff.
An ethernet splitter or hub device can allow more than one base station to operate. A backward-compatible AirPort extreme from about 2004 could do, if you go there.
    {I gave away a very nice 800MHz 17" iMac G4, it didn't see much use. Then I found the new owners had left it unplugged for a year, & with the 1/2AA 3.6V lithium battery dead, it would not start. And they got rid of it...}
Happens I have an original Apple refurbished AirPort Extreme orb last model (the high end in its day) still in the generic brown Apple box; unused and never tested at my end of the road. And that was a spare. Also I found three more used ones in second hand stores, for about $3. each. Alas, the tiny early model AirPort express does a fine job, too. I'm using one as they work with both b/n wi-fi.
    Good luck & happy computing!
