Connecting 2 imacs together
I have a new desktop and a "not as new" desktop. I'd like to use the older mac as a second monitor for the new imac. Is it possible to connect them together and only use the new hard drive? If so, how?
I believe that only works in the reverse. See Using a 27-inch iMac as an external display.

Not sure that I have selected the correct forum. Hope my questions are clearly stated.
Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter. TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices). It does not show Mail or Safari menus. System preferences' display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution. I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access. Is there any way to make this work for us? We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web. Do we need Apple TV to do this? Or is it not possible with our old iMac? My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
Thank youLately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time, you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV. -
I am trying to connect IMAC OSx 10.9.4 to Suddenlink thru ethernet connection in New Bern NC. No luck. Any hints?
If you bring up Safari browser, and go to www.google.com, does it give you an error?
It is possible that you are not getting DNS. From the OSX terminal can you run the following two commands
1. dig www.google.com
2. ifconfig en0
3. ifconfig en1
4. ping -c 3 www.google.com
1. Example output...

Connect iMac 2011 as a display for another iMac 2011
Hello.
I have two iMac's 2011, and want to use one of them as a display for another.
Is there any way to do that?
Best regards,
AlexeyThanx for reply!
My mistake - one of iMac's is 2010 (iMac11,3).
According to this doc, there is no way to connect iMac 2010 to 2011 in TDM.
Maybe there is another way to do that (over ethernet or any other interface)?

Can i connect imac and macbook by usb?
can i connect imac and macbook pro by using USB clable? i just want pass my files and music from macbook to imac.
thank youYou can't connect both computers by USB. The easiest way is to connect them using a FireWire cable (if your iMac and your MacBook Pro have got FireWire ports), and put your MacBook in target disk mode (start your MacBook holding the T key).
Doing this, the iMac will detect the MacBook's hard disk as an external disk, so you can easily access to your files from Finder and copy the data you want to the iMac's hard disk -

In the case of using Target Disk mode between computers, a similar restriction is also present. The adapter will work in Target Disk Mode; however, it will only do so if first plugged into the system before invoking target disk mode so it can be initialized by the firmware.

Connecting iMac and MacBook Pro using a non-Apple wireless router
I use a Belkin wireless router. Is there any way for me to connect iMac and MacBook Pro using the router to share files? I think I read somewhere that I need AirPort Extreme for this, but I'm not sure. Thank you.
Great resource from Dennis...file sharing, I.e. networking, is a function of the operating system settings and not the brand of router. Using Mac OS X 10.6 on both machines makes it really seamless. Following Dennis's kb article should make the two almost act like one machine.

hi,
What is the best way to connect switch together (with 2960 switch)..cross or stright cable...up/down or normal port ?
WAN ----Router 1 --- -SW1 ---- SW2
|
|
SW3----SW4----SW5 (no vlan)---PC1
all switch has up,down and normal port except SW5
Does SW5 will support vlan if it is connect to a layer 2 switch (let s say sw5 is connected to port 5 of SW4 (and port 5 is VLAN 20 access mode...then trunk between SW3 and SW1))...is there any inheritance ?
Hope, this time, this post will be post on the forum.
Thanks for help,Hi Loic the wire between switch 4 and 5 shouldn't make a difference in terms of rj45 so long as it is auto set (which by default it is). If you want switch 5 to be vlan 20, configure vlan 20 there and the port on switch 4 must also have vlan 20. So long as either switch is tag or untag, but both configuration matching it will work fine.

how can i can connect imac 24 pouce and macbook to use the screen of the imac ?
You can't. It requires a 2009 or later 27" iMac to use Target Display Mode. You could try using software like ScreenRecycler.

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
Thanks!ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?

Hey guys, Just connected my iMac to my samsung HDTV via a mini dvi to HDMI adapter, picture is awesome, i just have a question, i am basically in a DUAL SCREEN mode, both my LCD and my iMac screen work together at the same time, moving my Mouse cursor all the way to the left enters my LCD screen and i can do whatever i want on the LCD screen! its really nice, but i have a question, when i watch a video or something on the LCD TV side , my iMac's screen stays ON, as in the screen doesnt turn off as it should , i have it setup so the screen turns off after 3 mins of inactivity but heres the thing, how do i tell the iMac to turn the screen off when im using the LCD side in the Dual Mode?
Go to System Prefs/Displays/Arrange and set the iMac in Extended Desktop mode (you are calling it Dual Screen) then drag the two display icons into your preference order and drag the menubar to your HDTV to make it the primary display.
Now if you use Front Row to view all of your media; DVD, Photo, Video, etc, when FR appears on the HDTV the monitor on the iMac will darken. Media that you view with iTunes should do the same. Some 3rd party multimedia apps may also darken the secondary displays when in Extended Desktop mode with multiple displays. I only use FR.

Joining 2 Imacs together to xfer data ?
I am receiving my new imac soon and I would like to connect the two together so i can easily xfer files to my new imac.
Is there a "procedure" for this I can download or has anyone done this and would like to give me the steps involved?
Thanks! If the current iMac has Mac OS X (at least Tiger), open System Preference Sharing pane. Turn on +File Sharing+.
Connect the two Macs with a standard Ethernet cable.
On the new Mac, open a Finder window. Look in the sidebar under SHARED. You old iMac should be listed. Select it and click on the +Connect As+ button. Use the user name and password for you user account on the old iMac to mount any volume on the old iMac. Transfer your data.
Note: If your old iMac has Panther or below, it will still work but the iMac may not automatically show up in the new iMac's Finder window sidebar. Please post back if this is the case...
If you have a FireWire cable that can connect the two iMac, you can also use FireWire Target Disk Mode.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Start your old iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode. NOTE: The newest iMac models only have FireWire 800, so if your FireWire cable is for FireWire 400, you will need an adapter or a cable that has 800 on one and and 400 on the other.
Using either of the above methods to connect, you can use the Migrations Assistant program (in the Utilities folder) to automate the transfer process, if desired. I like to do it manually.
