Connecting an Ethernet switch to the AE?

Hi,
I have a small wireless network at home with the following setup:
1. Airport Express (802.11n) + ADSL modem connected to the ethernet port.
2. Mac Pro (2008) w/Airport Extreme card
3. Mac mini (2010) w/Airport Extreme card
4. PC laptop with 802.11b/g card (serves as a media center)
5. iPod touch
Since the laptop sits just beside the Airport unit I would like to connect it with a cable, for a couple of reasons:
a. Its wireless card is slow and unreliable.
b. I'd like to use Wake-on-LAN features
Since the Airport Express' only Ethernet port (which I understand serves for both WAN and LAN?) is already in use by the modem, I was wondering if I can connect the modem and the laptop to a simple ethernet switch (I was thinking of this one: http://www.edimax.com/en/producedetail.php?pd_id=281&pl1_id=4&pl2id=23) which will then be connected to the Airport Express. Is this possible?

I was wondering if I can connect the modem and the laptop to a simple ethernet switch (I was thinking of this one: http://www.edimax.com/en/producedetail.php?pd_id=281&pl1_id=4&pl2id=23) which will then be connected to the Airport Express. Is this possible?
You would need to use a simple wired only router...not a switch...to do what you want. Reason...with a switch, your "modem" is connected to two devices at the same time, but it can only deliver one IP address. It will be a matter of chance as to which device, the laptop or the Express connects to the Internet.
If the Express connects, then you will have no Internet signal for the laptop. If the laptop connects first, then you will have no Internet connection for the Express.
A router will accept a single IP address and provide additional IP addresses so that multiple devices will be able to connect.

I just purchased the 2TB TC and set it up on bridge mode to my att verse which is connected via ethernet cable.  The TC is continually blinking amber and an error message states that a wireless network cannot be found but the uverse is functioning great.  The network name I assigned to the TC is also not appearing among available networks.  How do I remedy this, please?

What OS on the computer you are using to setup the TC?
Did you turn on ipv6 for wireless to link-local... this is essential for network access now??
Try power cycling the network.. start up in correct order.. uverse.. 2min wait.. TC.. 2min wait.. computer.
No luck factory reset and start over. Use ethernet cable as well to the computer to help it.
No luck I can show you manual method.

  • HT1178 Do I want to create a new wireless network or join my current network?  I can't connect an ethernet cable to the Mac / printer and to the wireless modem at same time - in two different rooms.

I am trying to set up Time Capsule so that I can do my first backup (after 1 1/2 years!) with Time Machine.  I have read other forums, but in each case they instructions eventually do not apply.
I have connected my TC to my existing wireless router.  This sits in a bedroom and cannot be moved as a rental home.
I have plugged in the TC and updated the software.
Now - do I want to A Create a New Wireless Network (remember I can't connect the TC to Mac using an Ethernet cable). B Replace an existing base station or wireless router with TC (only intend to use for TM as don't know other benefits as of yet). or C want TC to join current network.
Thinking C.  If I choose C, it then asks A TC to wireless join current network (NO as already connected using Ethernet). B want to connect TC to my network using Ethernet to extend my existing wireless network. C want to disable the wireless network on this TC and connect it to my computer or network using Ethernet - CANNOT do this as devices can not be in the same room.
Or do I want to create new wireless network - first set of questions - choice A?  What is the benefit to creating a new one when I won't be in this rental house for longer than 18 more months??
    Please help and quickly!  Thanks!

    Let me suggest some things.
But first ask exactly what wireless router you have now and what type of broadband service?
Are you happy with the wireless on the current router? If so, then you can plug the TC straight into whatever computer you have by ethernet, short 1M cord with no connection to the network. And use it without affecting your existing network at all. This is trivial setup.
Although you don't say exactly what Mac and printer you are using, is it a desktop? Laptop it is definitely easier not to plug it in, but a desktop you can plug in the TC and it will all sit happily together.
How is the printer connected and to what?
I am not sure why you need such quick help.. this is all minor setup stuff.. and 18months in todays world is like permanent man.
Your multiple A, B, C are more confusing than helpful.
The best choices without more info.. are to replace the existing wireless router with the TC. ie your option B.. but how to do this depends on the type of connection. Is it cable or adsl? Can you easily bridge the existing modem router.. if that is what it is?
Think carefully in the ideal world what would you like..
    and what do you have..
We can probably suggest ways and means to fit what you like to what you have.. without introducing a stack of options that are doing your head in.

  • I just bought a mac mini...can i just connect an ethernet cable to the airport extreme and set up the mini through an existing mac

I just took the mini out of the box and hooked it up to the airport extreme through a direct ethernet cable between the two.  Can i find the mini and set it up through an existing mac that is also hard wired to the network?  Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response.. I don't have a monitor nor a wireless keyboard to use on the mac mini...apple salesguy at bb tells me that I can hook up the mini to the ethernet port of my airport extreme and find the mini using finder on my 27 inch mac.
that my regular mac would see everything on the mini and that i can proceed to set everything on the mini through my regular mac...
I am trying to purchase the server software from the app store and turn the mini into a server..
that is what i am attempting to do.

  • Is there any way I can connect an ethernet cable to the air with an adapter?

I have a macbook air which of copurse does niot have an ethernet cable. However, I need to use one rather than wifi. Is there an adapter that would allow me to connect an ether net cable to the Air? I am assuming the answer is no, but thought I would try.

  • Connecting a Switch to the E4200

Have a Linksys E4200 router located in my basement and I am experiencing a puzzling wired connectivity issue as follows:
Port 1 on the router is for my study, I have no problem getting connection regardless  if I use my study's Ethernet jack or if I run a 5 ft. cable (hereinafter THE CABLE) from the router’s  port 1 to my laptop (i.e., cabling does not make a difference).
I then connect to router port 1 an EZXS55W Linksys switch (using port 1 on the switch and THE CABLE) and then connect my laptop to port 2 on the switch using a second cable.  I am unable to connect to the network/internet even after rebooting both the cable modem and router.
I then reconnect my study to port 1 on the router, I go to my study and connect the study’s Ethernet  jack using THE CABLE to port 1 on the switch and using a second cable from port 2 on the switch to my laptop. …. I get an network/internet connection immediately !
Can someone assist with this puzzle ?  Has anyone seen this before ?  FYI, I have had the exact problem with switches EZXS88W and SE2500 (no longer own this).
    Thanks,
    Zach

Sorry but the description of the problem is quite vague and a bit confusing.
To get the switch working properly make sure the router is connected to the uplink port of the switch. Take note: When Uplink port is used, the port adjacent to it becomes inactive (port5) because they are shared. Switches are really pass-through devices so nothing is to be configured.
"Also be aware that on the outside of the box for the EZXS88W switch, there is a picture showing a "Broadband Router" connected to port #1 of the switch.  The Uplink is shown as being connected to another switch."  The picture shown outside the box refers to how you could connect the switch to other networking devices; router, switch or a hub to expand your network.

You never want to have a switch between the modem and base station.
Reason....the modem only provides one IP address, it will be a matter of chance as to which device connected to the switch gets the Internet connection. If the base station happens to be the lucky guy, no other device(s) that are connected to the switch will be able to connect to the Internet.
Connect the switch to one of the LAN <-> ports on the base station and all will be well.

  • Modbus connection through ethernet using the NI Modbus library

Hi, first of all I want to say that I'm new to Labview, so I'm in the studying phase and I may have very basic questions.
There's a tool that's basically a big screwdriver with a controller that can be programmed to make certain jobs using desired speed and torque,  it's called Handy2000. You can save in different channels the configurations for the different jobs. The controller has its own software, and I can already connect to it and read/write with no problem using an ethernet cable.
I was asked to make an interface in labview to select the channels, show in a graphic way (with photos of the electronic components) what screws correspond to that channel, and show when the steps of a job are done. All of this will be in a panel pc connected to the tool's controller.
Since I'm new to labview and to the modbus protocol, I took some time to study the basics. I understand how the protocol works and the very basics of labview programming, so I have an idea of how the front panel will be and what things needs to be modified. But now it's time to start the implementation, and I'm a little lost on how to make the basic configuration to setup the connection and start writing the addresses on labview. By the way I don't have the DSC module, I only have to use the NI Modbus library.
I already checked the example functions to use my pc as master and slave and watched the codes for the different type of data (coil, input, input register, holding register), but I don't know how I should start programming, and the most important thing is how to make some tests in the process to check that I'm having the communication between the pc and the controller. I already read in the forum and learned a lot, but failed to see as a completely newbie how to make and change the basic setups to make the thing work.
So any help is welcome, specific answers about how to make the basic setup and how to test it, vi examples or basic tutorials to read.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stefan Christiansen
p.s: I attached the manual that specifies the addresses for the modbus communication, so if you could give me an example of where I should change the address in the labview code and what should I put  to make a basic read or write it would be very helpful

I can't even know if it's connected right
First I opened the Master Ethernet Example and the Slave Ethernet Example, and everything worked fine.
Now I tried to do it connected with ethernet cable to the controller using the Master Ethernet Example, and set the "Remote IP Address" to the address of the controller (which I already tested with ping and the connection with my PC is fine, and also I have no problem reading and writing with the controller's software). And when I run it, I get the error 56. The error tells me that it happens at TCP Read in MB Ethernet receive.vi:5. I attached the photo of that vi.
I really hope you can help, I need to establish the connection and being able to read/write at least something.

  • Question regarding ONT connection via Ethernet and Cable cards

    Hi,
We recently upgraded to Fios Quation 150Mbps/65  plan. We are not getting the advertised speeds (we only get like 5mbps upload) so verizon is sending a tech to switch the ONT connection from coax to ethernet.
I have 2 questions regarding this new setup:
    1. If the ONT communicates with the Fios Actiontect router via ethernet instead of coax from now on, How will the set top boxes and Tivo-esque cable card powered device I currently have connected to coax, talk to the verizon system from now on, if coax is taken out of the equation? Will fios signal still flow through the internal coax wiring of the house? And moreover, I was under the impression that coax was the way set top boxes communicated and derived independent ip addresses from the Fios router, for on deman purposes and what not. How will this work from now on?
    Quiestion 2.
Right next to the wall where the ONT sits, theres's a basement office where we have a PC that connects to the Fios system  via an Actiontect MoCa adapter (ECB2500C) which I assume derives it internet connection from the Fios Actiontec router which sits upstairs in the living room.
Again, with the Coax about to be disabled next Friday in favor of ethernet connection from the ONT, I assume this PC will be left without internet because of the lack of internet signal in the coax? Is this correct?
Question 2.5 If my above assumption is correct, since this office is right on the other side of the wall where the ONT sits outside the house, would it be possible to run an ethernet wire through the wall that connects straight from the ONT to an ethernet switch inside the office, from which I would derive a connection for this basement PC (properly firewalled of course) and then, from said switch, continue running the ethernet wire that would ultimately reach the Actiontec Fios router upstairs from which the rest of the house derives it's internet?  and would this setup affect in any way the propper functioning of the cable boxes in the house?
I'd appreciate your input and any help you can provide so I can have a ballpark idea of what to tell the Fios guy to do when he comes on Friday.
    Cheers.
    Solved!

It's not valid to have two devices connected to the ONT, PC and VZ Router.  Must be a single device. The ONT locks onto the MAC Address of the first device it sees. Since you have TV you should have the VZ router as the internet facing router.
    Other options:
    1.  Have the VZ Router located next to the PC in the basement and then use Wireless for all other PC's.
    2.  Have the VZ Router located next to the PC in the basement but run one wire upstairs and connect a switch where other PCs and devices can connect via a wire.
    Hope that helps.

  • Do I need to buy an ethernet switch that has a WAN port

I want to buy an Aiport Express to handle a WiFi only iPad and an old PPC iMac with 10.5.8 on it that has no WiFi card.  The iMac gets on the internet from a cable plugged directly into its ethernet port (using DHCP).  The cable comes off an antenna at the front of the cottage.  A signal hits the antenna from a broadcasting tower about half a mile away.
I need to buy an ethernet switch for the Aiport Express to handle both the iPad wirelessly and the wired iMac.  Does the switch have to have a WAN port or can I buy one with five LAN ports?
Message was edited by: Roy Vincent.  Spelling error

So here's what I am planning to do.  I get myself an ethernet switch.  I plug my cable from my antenna into it.  I run a cable from one of its five ports into my iMac.  I run a cable from one of its other ports into my Airport Express.  I configure the Airport Express in Bridge Mode.  Now my wife can connect to the web wirelessly using the iPad and I can connect using the wired iMac --- and we can do so at the same time and indpendently of one another.   No?
    Sorry, but no.
You only have one IP address.  With a switch feeding two devices, it will be a matter of chance as to which device gets the IP address.
The other device will not be able to connect to the Internet, since a switch cannot "split" the connection.
Instead, you need a simple wired router to "share" the public IP address that you receive. In turn, the router distributes "private" IP addresses to devices on your local network, so each device will be able to connect to the Internet.
As I mentioned, a switch cannot perform the functions of a router.

  • TC not seeing devices attached downstream via a ethernet switch

I have a number of switches in my home network and for whatever reason the TC is not seeing the devices downstream. I assume the TC works like every other router in existence and should be just fine working with ethernet switches. The switches work great on my old buffalo wap/router and if I turn off the buffalo wap/router, move the ethernet cables to the TC (reboot TC, not reboot doesn't matter) all the network devices go kaput.
Any suggestions would be great. I've tried everything turning TC off/on. Turning switches off/on, turning switch attached devices off/on. Nothing works. Plug switch ethernet cables back into the buffao wap/router and everything shows up just fine.
    Stumped.

There are some issues which have popped up with the TC and some routers.. particularly that the WAN connection is not working correctly.
Try using one of the LAN ports on the TC and see if that helps.
Also open the Network utility in the computer and run the netstat scan .. it looks like this.
Locate the TC on the computer that is having issues.
Then ping it.. use the full domain..
eg in terminal mine is ping tcgen4.local
I think you should rename the TC to all smb names.. ie short, no spaces pure alphanumeric as it simply works better.
Then if the TC shows up in the ping, mount the hard disk manually,
In finder, Go connect to server and type
AFP://TCname.local (use the full domain name of the TC from the netstat scan).. or use the IP you get when you ping it.. although that is going to keep changing unless you can lock it.

  • HT5438 Appletv doesn't work with an ethernet switch?

It worked before when connected directly to the modem, but I wanted to use my modem with my computer too for internet, so I added an ethernet switch and connected the three of them to it.  My internet works good in my computer, but apple tv doesn't work. It doesn't display netflix or any other option to watch video.

    Sidney,
please post your configuration. Are you using a router between the ethernet switch and the cable modem  which is connected to the internet? It is important to know  where the IP address' for your devices come from. Does the router  provide them, our your internet provider? Open System Preferences on the Macbook and go to the network settings and look at the IP address. The go to settings general on the Apple TV, then network settings and look at the IP address. the last diigits to the right of the period should be close to the same number like : 60.132.19.151  and 60.132.19.134. if they are similiar go to Network utiliy in the utilities portion of the applications folder. Open the Network utitilty and select the ping option. Enter the IP address and see if you can ping it.

  • Connected with ethernet but can't surf

I have an 2010 2.8 GHz Intel core i7 iMac 27" OS 10.7.5 connected to AT&T Uverse broadband. Connection to the internet was fine until doing a Software security update today. After it rebooted I could not get on the internet even though it shows in the Network preferences that it's Connected to ethernet and has the IP address 192.168.1.66. I have tried 3 different up to date browsers and I use Apple Mail, but it will not get email. I try doing a software update and it can't "because of a network problem". I try Network Diagnostics and it says "Your Internet connection appears to be working correctly."
I can connect via wireless with the same connection on my MacBook Pro and iPad, but not with my iMac.
I have tried switching modem ports and ethernet cables. I was also able to connect vie ethernet on my MacBook Pro with no problem.
    What could it be???
    Bad Ethernet port??
Can I trash the browser prefs maybe?
Any settings in the modem? DNS or other settings?
    Please help!

  • Satellite R840-12C: cannot switch off the WiFi function manually

I have recently purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite R840-12C Notebook.
The Wifi LED remains "on" and the function key does not work, in other words cannot switch off the WiFi function manually.
Although the WiFi function remains 'on" I cannot connect to a wireless modem.
When I go to device manager I find conflicts in "other devices" for
    1. Network Controller
    2. PCI Simple Communications Controller
    3. Unknown Device
Tried updating drivers by connecting through ethernet cable to the modem but to no avail.
    Can someone help?

    Hi
Did you install the WLan driver?
The notebook seems to be equipped with the Atheros AR9285 Wlan card and in most cases the Fn + F8 button does not work because the Wlan driver is not installed or does not work properly.
Recommend firstly deleting the WLan card from the device manager and then to reboot the notebook. After the new reboot install the new downloaded Atheros Wlan driver for this wlan card.
Here you can find all the Wlan drivers published by Toshiba:

  • Under Yosemite iMac will not stay connected to ethernet network

    Mac OS X 10.10.1
When attached to Netgear Prosafe gigabit unmanaged switch (circa 2007) iMac Retina, Mac Pro, Macbook Pro will not stay connected to Apple Airport managed ethernet LAN. With Sys Prefs Network panel open I can watch the ethernet connect and disconnect on a periodic basis (about every 15 secs!). When same machines are connected to ethernet ports on the Airport itself, connections are steady and permanent. I suspect incompatibility with networking protocol used by Netgear but assuming their protocol is standard the incompatibility must be in Yosemite. Did NOT have this problem under Mavericks with any of my machines.
Is my only alternative to order a new gigabit switch? If so, have protocols changed in the intervening 6 years such that Yosemite is not compatible with older switches?

Well, my 6 year old netgear gigabit switch must have been partially failing because when I replaced it with the current model (same specs, same model name, but sold as an updated model??) things are now going fine. Getting gigabit network speeds on all computers and 100% reliable connection. Guess it was just a coincidence that my Yosemite update and the switch failure occurred at the same time.
