Connecting Digital Converter to Firewire Port

I have an analog to digital converter (Pyro A/V Link) that I have been using to preview my video from Final Cut Pro on my television. I now want to set this up to convert some analog tapes and now my computer just randomly doesn't identify my converter when it is plugged into my firewire port. Now, when I plug it in to the computer and go to system profiler, I get a message that says it cannot read my firewire drives at all. When I unplug it, the profiler identifies my external hard drive. Can anyone please tell me what I need to do?
Note: The only change from before is I upgraded to the new Mac operating system, installed my Ram, and installed a newer version of Final Cut.
Thank you to the great person that may help me...I NEED IT!

I just switched the cables between the hard drive and the converter and now they are working. Now, just to figure out how to get this beta player footage to my computer...its a never ending battle.
I don't know if switching the cables worked or if it was something else...I guess I'll never know.
Thank you!

  • Connecting iPod mini through Firewire port

I usually connect my iPod through my USB 2.0 ports, but I would like to try connecting it through my firewire port. When I plug in my iPod with the included firewire cable, my computer doesnt recognized the mini is plugged in (the mini is charging so I know its connected). But it works when I use my USB cable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Reset the iPod when it is connected to the computer. Several attempts may be necessary.

  • Monitor turns off when connected to USB or Firewire port

I just purchased a used Mac Mini Core 2 Duo and have a 20" Apple flay display with USB & Firewire ports.  When I connect either of the USB or Firewire cables from the display to the Mac Mini, the display goes off.  Is this some kind of short?  Or is there some setting that causes this?

  • Sony digital8 camcorder via firewire port, is it digital or analog?

    hi all,
I was successful to view & record from my Sony digital8 cam via firewire port. I'd like to know, is this connection analog or digital? Has anyone been successful to record, back up and edit their precious home videos on a G4 PowerMac? And how many DVD discs will it take on a full Digital8 cartridge?
    Thanks for your help
    Web dude

is this connection analog or digital?
A Firewire port is all digital.
Has anyone been successful to record, back up and edit their precious home videos on a G4 PowerMac?
Yes. Before the G5 came out, many people used G4s (and some still do) to edit not only home videos, but commercial television programs as well.
how many DVD discs will it take on a full Digital8 cartridge?
A standard DVD-5 (single layer disc) will hold about two hours of DVD-Video ... video AFTER it's been properly compressed to meet the DVD-Video standard.
However, if you're asking about raw footage (not compressed more than it was recorded), you should be able to get close to 14 minutes of footage per 4.7gb disc. Digital8 uses the DV codec which requires about 13.3gb per hour of footage. If you recorded the tape in SP mode, you should be able to get just over 1 hour of footage per tape.

  • Recent Leopard Update Messes up Cinema Display Firewire Ports

Okay, this is really odd. I have a Lacie Porsche DVD-RWDL Firewire drive hooked up to my Mac Pro via my 23" Cinema display. The cinema display firewire cable was connected directly to the back of the mac pro. Lastly my iSight was connected to the open firewire port on the Lacie. This worked just fine for the longest time under both Tiger and up until very recently in leopard.
Now tho the DVD Drive is not recognized by any programs (Toast, etc) or by System Profiler (Unknown Device) when it is connected to the cinema display. Oddly enough it is detected when connected directly to the mac pro (or for troubleshooting sake I tried my G4 cube w/ Tiger... it also detected it). On top of that the iSight will work when plugged into either the Lacie or the Cinema Display... so its not like the cinema display's pots are dead (the USB works fine).
This is pretty obscure I know... but has anyone ran into something similar? I figure its either some very, very weird hardware problem or or one of the many recent updates to leopard has things acting goofy.
    Thanks

I have a similar problem with my 20" cinema display. Try unplugging and replugging the device. That's been working for me, although it is an annoyance.

  • Firewire port for Canon XH-A1s camera

I am considering buying a Canon XH-A1s camera. However, I would have to connect it to a firewire port, and don't currently have one on my macbook. Is there any way to have one installed? (also, I've heard that USB to Firewire adapters don't work for this purpose).

No, Apple dropped the firewire port on the White Unibody MacBooks in 2009. If you you need a firewire port you'll have to upgrade to a MacBook Pro or get a used pre-2009 MacBook.

  • Crap! Did I damage my firewire port?

Previous owner of a PC laptop and 4-pin FW that connected my m-audio fw-410. Needed to use the adapter to power the device.
Got my MBP with 6-pin and have been using the fw-410 but still connected to the adapter. I've heard that this is necessary when using phantom powered mics.
However, just poked around the m-audio website and found an article that specifically warned against using the adapter with apple computers that have 6-pin.
Would this instantly ruin my gear or port or is it precautionary due to an outside possibility of damage?
    How would I know?
    Here's the m-audio message:
    - DO NOT USE the power supply when using your M-Audio FireWire audio interface with Apple computers!
The 6-pin FireWire port on your Mac supplies your M-Audio FireWire interface with power. Connecting a second power source (6-pin FireWire port AND Power Supply) can cause a variety of problems from installation failure to device damage. The power supply is intended for use when connecting to 4-pin FireWire ports that do not supply bus power. Apple Macintosh computers do not use this type of FireWire connectors and for this reason, you should never use the power supply with a Mac.

I guess it is. It still recognizes drives and still pumps sound through the device. I suppose that stupid me can assume it's okay and I dodged a bullet?

  • ISight via a firewire port on an OXFORD IDE external drive

My Powerbook G4 has an OXFORD IDE external hard drive connected to its one firewire port. Having connected my iSight camera into a spare firewire port on the ext HD neither iChat not iMovie recognise it. If I plug my VideoCam into the ext HD both iChat and iMovie are able to use it. How do I tell iChat and iMovie where to find iSight?

    Hello Peter,
A "not uncommon" problem. iSight draws significant power and can be picky about what and how it shares your Mac's Firewire port(s).
See the Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight. FAQ for my best suggestions.

  • 2011 Imac firewire port

I have a 2011 imac. Has anyone had intermittent connection problems with the firewire port?  When I have been importing video sometimes imovie would say there is no video signal and the imovie screen would turn blue. This happened only a couple of times. Once I went back to firewire plug and push it in and it came back.  Also I am getting random messeges that a device wasn't properly ejected.  I do have a cheap usb hub wih a couple of drives connected but if it is that I don't see how that would effect the firewire port.

Not real important, but what FireWire Camera or device are you using?
I'd try another > FireWire 800 to 400 9 to 4 pin Cable first and then if that doesn't work go to > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ

  • Older Digital Video Camera - no firewire port

I have an older Sony Digital Video Camera and a MacBook Pro with iDVD"08 and I want to transfer my tapes to DVD using OneStep DVD. The camera has a USB port, but no firewire port. Is there an adapter I can get or some other way to use OneStep DVD?
I also have a Mac Mini with iDVD6.

I have the same problem and I have a new Sony HDR-SR7 HDV Camera.
In the past iMovie and iDvd (for example iLife '06 and earlier) worked mainly via firewire when it came to importing or capturing video. It is still the preferred protocol on most macs. And it is what I continue to use on all 4 macs in my home.
However, in order to compete with most PC's as well as changing market conditions; USB 2 was only recently incorporated into the macintosh platform with the introduction of iMovie 7 (I'm guessing it was done to appease camcorder manufacturers that only supplied internal Hard Drives and USB2 ports and dropped FW connectivity altogether as a cost cutting measure and not necessarily because USB is a better than firewire (which it most certainly is not). Keep in mind iMovie 7 now allows for capturing video via USB2 when connected directly to the camera but it won't allow you to create custom chapter markers (unless one uses Garage Band to perform this much needed function). Nor will USB2 allow you to export your finished i-Movie back to the camcorder (at least not on most macs). Apparently this particular feature was also dropped when writing this newer iMovie software.
Nevertheless, iMovie 7 will allow you to share / export the finished iMovie (and automated / interval chapter markers) to iDvd'08. But for those of us who still prefer to use Firewire over USB2 as well as maintaining custom chapters, apple does offer iMovie 6 as a free download (provided one has already purchased iLife'08).

If your camcorder has no FW ports, your best remaining option (short of buying apple's pro apps / exchanging for a camera that has firewire) is to use the existing USB2 interface to connect your camcorder directly to your mac and apple's latest software / iMovie 7.

  • Firewire port USB converter

Is there a way I can use my firewire port with an adapter to convert it to a USB port?
    Thanks
    Paul

Well, I really can't recommend in this case. I forgot I connect to my 24" Apple LCD display first. I then have the belkin hub connected to it (which is self powered). I also have another non-powered hub connected to the display, which I have my WD drive connected to.
I have the MBA superdrive and the 24" Apple LCD display is the only hub it will work through.
By the way, if you have a mba, you don't have a firewire port, unless you are talking about another computer.

  • Connect 2 external drives to 1 firewire port?

    MacBook Pro 5 4 Mid-2009 15"
    has 1 firewire port
1 USB 2.0 port with 2 more USB 2.0 ports on an external monitor
I've been running Time Machine on a 500 GB LaCie d2 quadra external drive and need to upgrade, probably to a 3 TB drive.
To transfer my backups from the old drive to the new one, I need to connect both to the MacBook. Can I connect both in a daisy chain to the FireWire port? Or do I have to connect one via USB and the other via FireWire?
    Thanks.

You can either use a FireWire hub or connect one device through USB. If either drive has two or more FireWire ports, it can act as a hub.

  • What can I connect to the cinema display´s firewire port?

What do you think of connecting an external hard drive to the cinema display´s firewire port? My other firewire ports on my G5 are already occupied.

The FireWire ports on a Cinema Display can be used with anything that the FireWire ports on a Mac can be used for; they are included because a Mac and external monitor may be set up in a way that prevents the ports on the computer from being easily accessed.
