Connecting G4 PowerBook to Internet Provider O2

I cannot keep my WiFi connection to my IPS who is O2. I am using a G4 PowerBook (Tiger OS 10.4.11). O2 provides a CD and a Thompson router. My Mac will not recognise the CD. I can get connected to the internet and my gmail account, but I have to enter my ten digit unfathomable password every time I leave the computer for a short while and need to log on again. My WiFi symbol in the menu bar at the top is never fully blacked out. A man at O2 suggested I needed Advanced Settings, but I cannot find these via System Preferences/Network. Nor could he. Any ideas, please?

Thank you very much for your response. I have a touch of the flu and am not thinking very clearly at the moment.
My 15-inch PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.11 is the aluminium model. The model is PowerBook5,6 and its serial number <Edited by Host> which I think puts it into the last-but-one category of G4 PowerBooks ever made. It should, therefore, be capable of 802.11g. It has no connections on the back, only the rear hinges.
I would obviously like to have the freedom that comes with a WiFi connection (and was connected thus by Virgin for four or five years) , but at the moment I am using an Ethernet lead from the PowerBook into the Thompson router’s Port 1. Is there any disadvantage beside portability in doing this?
To be honest I am uncertain of the difference between a LAN and a WAN connection. I spent over two hours with a man at 02 trying to get connected by WiFi so that I did not have to enter their unmemorable password every time I returned to the Mac. And all the while the radio beacon icon in the top menu bar never really stayed blacked out properly. He was very surprised he could not get a PERMANENT connection that did not need a password to maintain it. And he changed my settings finally to :
Network Name: 02wirelessVH Security: WPA2 Personal. There was an AirPort ID of 00:11:24:91:41:e7, whatever that means, which I reckon remains the same.
I live in Central London and have had a perfectly good WiFi connection until I changed from a Virgin Netgear box to a Thompson box with O2.
I would be most grateful for any step-by-step instructions you might be able to give me. Many thanks.

  • HT4623 I keep getting an error message "cannot connect to the internet."  Is this a problem with my internet provider, or has anyone else had this problem.

I keep getting an error message "cannot connect to the internet."  Is this a problem with my internet provider, or has anyone else had this problem.

I get that problem once in a while and I will not be able to connect to the Internet with any of the 5 or 6 (or 7 or 8 ) web browsers that I use on my iPad. The one thing that I do that has never failed to work for me is to close all apps on my iPad and reset the device. I can't guarantee that it will work for you, but this works for me every time I get the server failed to load/can't connect to the Internet message.... Or whatever the exact message is.
If you have a ton of apps in the multitasking display, it can take a while to close them all, so you could just trey resetting the iPad first and that might be all that you need to do.
Closing apps in iOS 7 works like this. Drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Hi  my iPad is picking up my internet provider but will not connect

    hi
my ipad is picking up and showing my internet provider but will not connect or when it does it drops out. but the signal is still showing.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • I cannot connect to my network. I have the Ipod 6 and my home computer is running on windows XP. My internet provider is Rogers. Any suggestions?

How can I connect to my network? I received this as a gift and I cannot get it to connect. My home computer is running on Windows XP and my internet provider is Rogers. I have a network set up. Is therese something special that I need to do to ensure that this new device can communicate with the host computer?

My router is 5 years old and I connected 5 iDevices with no issues. Your router may need a firmware update.
But the easiest thing to try first is to reboot the router - unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Then restart your iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and slide to shut down. Hold the sleep button again until the Apple logo appears to start up.
Some other thoughts .... Does your iPad recognize your WiFi network?  Go to Settings>WiFi>Your Network Name. Can you see it?

  • Changing internet provider - can't connect to Internet

    Hi,
I've changed my internet provider (from Bell to Videotron), so from a modem plugged into my phone line to a pure cable modem.
My laptop (Macbook Pro) doesn't connect to the wi-fi anymore. I connected my cable modem to the time capsule... the light on the capsule flashed (amber) then turned into green (which is good), my computer sees my wi-fi name as available network, but internet is not working.
I assume this is because I have now adifferent IP? But shoudn't the time capsule recognize automatically the new IP?
    Help, please!
I plugged the Etherent cable directly into my laptop and I can connect to internet without problems.
    Thanks!!!

You need to completely reset the modem. Push the reset button if it has one and power it off for at least 15-20 minutes. Pull the battery if it's easily accessible.
(Cable modems "remember" certain devices, and they must lose their memory before they can connect to a "new" device).
Power off the rest of your network as well.
Start the modem after the power down period and let it run for a few minutes by itself. Then start the Time Capsule and let it run a few moments. Then start your computers one at a time.
Sometimes, you must call the ISP to have them reset the device on their system if this is not successful.
Please post back on your progress.

  • My iMac is not staying connected to my wireless internet. Any suggestions?  My provider says it's a computer issue and not their problem.

My iMac is not staying connected to the wireless internet.  My provider tells me it's a computer issue and not their problems.  Any suggestions?

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 7
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 8
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Connecting my Powerbook to my iMac for internet sharing via airport

Thanks in advance for any help.
I have given up trying to get an answer to my Airport problem and NTL Virgin.
I now have my iMac connected to web via ethernet all okay for a week now so it can't be my connection that was the problem.
I need to connect my PowerBook to the internet now at the same time. I would obviously like to do this using wireless technology. I was hoping to web share my iMacs connection via the airport cards on both macs but seem to be struggling.
I can set up a new network on the iMac and get the PowerBook to see it but it won't connect to the internet.
Any advice would be great thanks

To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):

o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    AirPort Options...
    o Network Name: <anything you want>
    o Channel: Automatic
o Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
    o Password: (optional)
    o Confirm Password: (optional)
    o WEP Key Length: (optional)
    o Click OK
    o Select "Internet Sharing" again
o Click "Start" to start Internet Sharing
    o Click Start

  • Lost connection to DHCP-Server of Internet provider

I installed Sneak Preview WAS 6.40 on my desktop.
Regardless of some warnings and errors the installation
    finished succesfully.
I was a bit disappointed because unlike MiniWAS 6.40 the ABAP-engine is not included.
Now my problem. I cannot connect to my internet provider any more. The provider swears that everything is correct
but I wont get a lease. Even after uninstalling 6.40 it doesn't work. What might be the reason?

    Hello Alfred,
i think that Question should not be asked in SDN. But never the less give us more details about your Internet connection. Is it DSL, Modem, ISDN, Cable Modem? Do you have a router?

  • My PowerBook G4 is connected by Airport To Internet/ My iMac Not?

Both my Powerbook G4 & iMac G4, were connected to internet through an airport dual ethernet. . .until today. My iMac does not see any network from my Airport - My Powerbook G4 does see the network, without any problem. I don't understan what happen. I tried all the suggestions ( unplug - plug etc) without any help. I shutdown my iMacG4 unpluged my cable modem - unpluged my airport & than pluged both my modem & airport and restarted the computer. The Network Staus message I get, "Airport is turned on but is not connected to a network." There's no network to select since none are displayed.
Now, my Powerbook G4 doesn't have this problem! Under Internet Connect I have list to select from!
Up till a few days ago, both the iMac & Powerbook were connect by Airport to Internet...?
    alowheo

    Eulogio,
i went through a similar thing in the past weeks: my iMac had suddenly problems connecting to my network, whereas the PB connected OK. at the end things turned out to behave in a logical way: if the PB and the Airport-express base station talk to each other, and the PB can configure the base station, whereas the iMac has problems (once making contact and loosing it very fast, the next time not be able to connect, saying: "there was an error in connecting...", and so on) - this means (and has been verified by the service guys) that the iMac is the cause, not the base station.
This can be hardware or software. I was working hard before i could narrow it down to hardware. (I suspected a setting-file whcih didn't get updated)
In your case things look obvious to me (well, after i went through my last three weeks...): the PB sees your net and all the other nets, the iMac doesn't. If you can configure the network with the PB, then the base station and the PB are fine, and the problem is in the iMac.
I suspect, that you have in the iMac "Airport on" - which means you have this 4 concentrical ring-sections of 90 degrees in your menu-bar. Or is it empty? if it's an empty symbol, then the airport card has no power. If you are sure that there is power on the iMac airport card, and you don't see any network, that means that there is no signal. this can be :the card itself, the antenna, or the logic board ...
A simple problem might be that the antenna is not well connected. Open up the iMac and reseat the antenna . Be careful to follow the instructions for opening; don't touch the electronics before discharging all static electricity of your body by touching the heavy metal frame which holds the electronics boards!! Try to reseat the antenna, in the iMac G5 (probably the same as in yours) you must feel a serious "click", when it is way in the connector.
If it is the card or the logic board, then i'm afraid that only the service people can help you. It can be tricky also for the service people to tell which part it is...
your remark :"Let me add, that once after the unplug/plug cable..." reflects EXACTLY the behaviour of my iMac.
Everything together: it looks to me as hardware, and except the antenna being badly seated, I'm afraid you have to check with the apple guys.
PLease, report back - and good luck.
    Thomas

  • My internet provider At

Hi, I work in Healthcare and use all Apple products at home and work. However, my knowledge on software in general is pretty average. I recently got an email from my At&t internet provider saying that one of my devices at home is acting as a zombie computer as part of a 'botnet' computer network. I have no clue what this is. However, I recently opened an old windows laptop that I havent used in 2 years to download some software which was not Mac compatible. I am pretty sure this wndows laptop has no antivirus on it. The date and time At&t mentioned that they found some bot infection coincided with the time I opened my old laptop. They also mentioned that for security reasons, they obscurred my ip address. Have no clue what that means!! They suggested me the following :
Botnets are networks of computers which have been infected with malicious software and placed under the control of a hacker or group of hackers. They are often used for attacks on websites, spamming, fraud, and distribution of malicious software. Because bots are designed to run in secret, an infected computer may display no obvious symptoms.
To address this problem we ask that you take the following actions. If your computer(s) are managed by an Information Technology (IT) group at your place of work, please pass this information on to them.
If you use a wireless network, an infected computer may be using your Internet connection without your knowledge. Ensure that your wireless router is password-protected and using WPA or WPA2 encryption (use WEP only if WPA is not available). Check the connections to the router and ensure that you recognize all connected devices.
Update the security software on your system and install any necessary service packs or patches.
When you have taken action, please respond by forwarding this email to [email protected] with an acknowledgement of: “I am taking steps to address this infection.” When we receive such an acknowledgment, we can maintain the high quality of service you expect from us. We welcome feedback on what removal tools or methods were used.
    Regards,
    AT&T Internet Services Security Center
I spoke with the customer care person at At&t and probably it is the weekend and no one could give me a specific answer on what needs to be done. One guy suggested to download McAfee for Mac from At&t website, which I did. However, I still have no clue, if my computer is infected. I disconnected the wireless network connection on my old windows laptop. I use a personal iphone, itouch and ipad for work, ipad, Mac air at home. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. This is really stressing me out. Thanks!!

First, remove the worthless McAfee product according to the developer's instructions.
If there really is a bot on your network, it's almost certainly the Windows PC. Since you've taken it offline, you can inform the ISP that the problem has been addressed. If you get another such warning, ask for details.
