Connecting guitar to new imac

Just recieved the new 27" imac and i'm trying to connect my electric guitar. But there is no 3.5 audio input jack socket anymore just the 3.5 headphone socket? does this mean i have to buy a audio interface or a 6.5mm female to USB cable?

does this mean i have to buy a audio interface
Yup.
or a 6.5mm female to USB cable?
How's that supposed to work? Not without an audio interface somehow "integrated"...

  • Connecting Macbook to new iMac

I recently bought the 24 inch iMac because my Macbook (purchased April 2006) is slow, unresponsive and has a broken optical drive. I have all of my recent photographs on my Macbook and would like to transfer them to my new iMac using a brand new Firewire 800 9-6 pin cable. My macbook is in working condition and this should work.. however my Macbook in FW mode isn't showing up on my iMac! Help!

That should be working. Try restarting the iMac with the MacBook connected in target mode. Also, if you run Disk Utility, does the MacBook's drive appear in the sidebar?
If you have never used that new cable for anything else, it is possible the cable is bad. It is also possible one of the FireWire ports is faulty. Do you have any FireWire 400 device? If so, use that cable to connect it to the iMac's FireWire 800 port, as a test. That will test the iMac's port and the cable. Also try connecting it to the MacBook with a normal cable, to make sure that port is working.
You can also connect the two Macs using +File Sharing+ over the network. Using an Ethernet cable to directly connect the two Macs will be faster than using wireless (as long as you use a Cat-5e or better cable). Just turn on +File Sharing+ in System Preferences Sharing pane on the MacBook. On the iMac, the MacBook should appear in the sidebar of any Finder window. Select it and click on the +Connect As+ button over to the right. Provide a username and password for an user account (on the MacBook).

  • Connecting on a new iMac G5

Trying to help a friend get his new iMac G5 on to the net, transferred his old setting from his old mac running 10.2.8 which used a usb cable, connected to a external modem/single router which then goes direct to the phone line. But with the new mac's there is no setting for internal modem and hence we cannot set up his broadband connection to work using the usb port.
    Any help greatly welcome

I'm not clear about all the details, but I am assuming you are talking about a DSL modem with only a single USB port connection for the computer, not a regular dial-up modem, which is what an internal modem network port setting would be for on Macs that support them.
If this is the case, I'm afraid your friend will need a DSL modem with an ethernet port or wireless link because Tiger doesn't seem to support high speed USB modem connections. (Apple sells a USB dial-up modem for the new iMacs -- see http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=MA0 34Z/A -- but I don't think from your "broadband" comment that this is what you want.)

  • AirPort not connecting consistently on new iMac aluminum

Just got a new iMac. Awesome toy but with a couple of bugs. I am having the freezing (beachball) issue but the most anoying one is the AirPort disconnect.
I have a wep connection and when I boot sometimes it connects automatically, sometimes it doesn't. Other times it just drops the connection. Signal strength is always good at 100%. (router 10 feet away)
To re-enable, i have to turn off air port, wait about 10 seconds and turn it back on. 9 times out of 10 it works. If not I have to keep doing this until it connects. If I just try to connect to the network ssid, it never works.
Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix.

    try:
from the Airport (little radar in menu bar) pull-down menu,
    turn-on "Interference Robustness"
the next step would be changing the channel settings in the router from 11 to 6

  • Connect Thunderbolt on new iMac to Firewire 400 device

I would like to connect a tape-based camcorder with a (4-pin) Firewire 400 output to a Thunderbolt port on my late 2012 iMac (which has no Firewire ports).  Apple sells a Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter (i.e., Firewire 800).  I'm thinking I could plug that into a 9 PIN/ 4PIN BILINGUAL FireWire 800 - FireWire 400 Cable  from monoprice.com.  Should that work, and if so, is it the only/best solution?
    Cary

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That should work without any problem.
If your camcorder has got other connections like USB, I recommend you to use USB instead, so you will save money and there are more possibilities that it works. Also, if it has got a SD card, you can insert it directly onto the iMac without connecting your camcorder

  • I want to use the ethernet connection from my new iMac to my Time Capsule.  It seems only the Wifi is seen by either device.  Ive connected the Time Capsule to the iMac.  How can I get the iMac to use the wired connection

I want to connect my iMac to my Time Capsule using Ethernet.  I have them connected via an Ethernet cable, but only WiFi seems to be working.  How can I specify the Ethernet connection instead of WiFi?  Thanks

Go to preferences, network and see if ethernet is indicated. Be sure it shows a green dot.  Also be sure it is at the top of the list (above WiFi).  If not click on the the wheel at the bottom and set service order.

  • Connection snag for new iMac G5 to AV receiver

The user guide says that I can use an optical audio cable w/ mini-plug connector for a iMac G5-based home theater system. I bought a Sony HT-DDW670 5.1 system with an AV Receiver STR-K670P that has a digital optical in
(SA-CD/CD in) that I connected to the optical out. When preferencing the sound setting for the selected device, Mac says that the Digital Out "has no output controls".
The only note in the Sony guide concerning the optical hookup reads: "The sound is not output when you play a SA CD on the SA CD player connected to the SA-CD/CD OPTICAL IN jack on this receiver. Connect to the analog input
    jacks (SA-CD/CD IN jacks)." -compatible w/ 32, 44.1, 48, & 96 kHz.
Does anyone have any ideas? The sony online support talked about a stereo mini pin adapter?
    iMac G5 PowerMac12,1   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi there,
Not sure quite waht your problem is!? I have my imac (iShight) G5 connected to my Sherwood amp through a monster audio optical cable with a mini concerter into the mac. As you say, the Mac ships the digital signal straight to the amp.... so you have no system volume controle. However applications can still have an influance on volume.
I have my amp set to a hight volume and my apps to a mid level so I get a nice out put and have room to crank it up.
My amp has a coaxcal and optical input, which is accessed through DVD input, as it assumes that DVD will have digital audio I also have to switch between coaxical and optical on the amp... depending on what cable I'm using.
My DVD used to be coaxixal, may power mac and iMac are optical! The sound is fantastic when you get it to work!
Did that cover your issue in any way? Sorry for rambeling!
    Stu.

  • Connecting New iMac to Server 4.0

Have a new MacMini Server updated to Yosemite and Server 4.0.  I believe I have setup the server to provide services via Open Directory, Mail, Messages, Calendars, created Network User accounts and so on. Seems relatively easy, actually.
But, what is the best way to connect a brand new iMac with Yosemite to the server?  A long time ago, I watched some Apple videos that showed an option in the initial OS startup to connect and configure automatically but that seems to be gone. Is there a support document or checklist that shows the best way to connect, step-by-step to the server and have things work?
I'm afraid my initial attempts have been very frustrating -- the client machine says it's connected to the server, but cannot load any user accounts. Mail/Messages, etc., continually ask for passwords and will not work.  Obviously I have missed something!!
Sorry ... LONG time Windows guy helping out his small company (seven clients) to transition to Apple/Mac!!
    Thanks in advance.
    Ken

After a couple of calls to Apple Enterprise support, this was pretty much resolved.  Issue revolved around my initial choice of hostnames.

  • Problem with 2 External Drives on my new iMac

I am having a problem when I daisy-chain a second external HD to my first external HD connected to my new iMac. This is the second external HD I've tried this with, with similar problems arising.
My setup: OS 10.5.6. First external HD: G-Tech Q 1TB; 2nd External HD: also a G-Tech Q 1TB (the first time I was daisy-chaining a LaCie 250GB drive to my first external drive).
Problem: when my second external HD is daisy-chained to the first external HD my system starts to go wonky. I can't force quit apps for one. My system hangs. On reboot I don't get past the blue screen. If I remove the daisy-chain all is fine.
I initially had this problem with another external HD I tried to daisy-chain to the first. Same issue.
I was trying to partition the second external using Disk Utility. When I hit the Partition button, Disk Utility just hung with the beach ball.
When I attached a second external the first time I tried to do this all sorts of havoc ensued. A lot of apps were hanging and I couldn't Force Quit them. The whole system seemed to go wonky.
Can anyone tell me what might be happening here?

I've been doing a bit of research on these boards about daisy-chaining problems and am reading that sometimes daisy-chaining can overwhelm the Firewire bus and even corrupt data. This is what I had experienced the first time I tried to daisy-chain. Someone recommended a powered Firewire repeater (like this: http://tinyurl.com/kl84n5) would be a better solution.
Given I've got only 1 Firewire port on my iMac, what do you think?

  • How can I rollback from Yosemite to Lion? I need to do this as I purchased a newer iMac and I have the old 17" iMac HD that I want to get the data migrated from. When I start the Migration Assistant it tells me that the OS X version is too old. Help!

I have purchased a newer mid 2011 iMac for my wife to replace her dead 17"iMac from 2006. It was running Snow Leopard. The new iMac has Yosemite and when I go into Migration Assistant it tells me that the OS X is too old, implying that I cannot get the data from it. How can I migrate this data to the new iMac? I have the hard drive removed and in an external enclosure connected to the new iMac.
    Thanks,
    Bill Stratman

Since any OS since Lion does not support Rosetta or PPC applications, you may want to check her apps for compatibility.
Have you tried to follow all the instructions here:
OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device
Also, as a general note: when you got the 2011 iMac did it have the original OS installed as required by the SLA? The seller is to remove any OS version obtained at the app store since the license is not transferable - did he do that? If not, as the OS download is tied to the Apple ID used to obtain it, you will not be able to update apps or reinstall the OS, so may I suggest you do this step now before you start porting over all the files. Use Internet Recovery: Hold Command + Option + R while restarting/rebooting until you see a spinning globe and a progress bar. After 2 - 10 minutes, you'll be connected to Apple's servers and see a Utilities window. Go to Disk Utility and choose erase your drive; once finished, go back to the window and choose to reinstall OS X. This should install a fresh original OS version which you can then update and tie to your wife's Apple ID.

  • Is the new iMac USB 2.0 Bootable ???

    Two questions really:
Is it possible to boot the new iMac from an external USB 2.0 device ???
If it is possible, how do I use the install disks that came with my new iMac to install a copy of Mac OS 10.4.10 onto an external USB 2.0 hard drive connected to my new iMac ??
Enquiring minds want to know !!
    M

    Hmmmm....
    Hum hum
Thanks for the quick reply and good morning !!
    No problem and good afternoon
My internal drive is 500 gigs and the external drive is only 120 gigs.
Will cloning using CCC or SuperDuper still be an option or is there some way I can start up the iMac from the DVD and select the external drive as the install destination and do a fresh install of 10.4.10 ???
If the used space on the internal hd is less than 120GB then yes, you will be able to clone it to your external 120GB hd. If it's more, then, obviously, you cannot.
You can install Mac OS X 10.4.x from your install DVD in exactly the same way as you would a normal installation; startup from the OS DVD but this time select the external USB drive as the volume to install to. You should be aware of the licensing agreement though. You are only allowed to install the OS on one Mac. Having said that, you are not really installing to another Mac are you... all you want to do is make an external bootable drive. It's a thin line.
