Connecting iMac to Macbook and using the camera

I currently have a macbook pro connected to my iMac. Everything works fine except video programs like Skype and Facetime. Whenever I want to use them, I have to open the macbook, and can't use the iMac camera directly. Any suggestions?

correction, through a thunderbolt. I'm, new to this, sorry if I'm a little slow. I'm troubleshooting for a family member, and was just told some new information. So it's a monitor, not an iMac. Not an iMac, simply a monitor. Does that help?

does anyone know of a way to actually tuen the phone bit off and just use the camera and video camera as to not interfere with the planes instruments i.e. no mobile phones allowed.

Briefly press power and then select the OFFLINE profile.
This will turn off all radios.
Just be aware that on some flights some flight attendants may not allow phone usage even in OFFLINE mode.

My iphone4s will charge when plugged into my macbook pro but will not sync. I am using the latest version of itunes and I already tried restarting both the computer and the device. What gives??

After days mucking around this worked for me..
For Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose Update Driver from the shortcut menu.
Click "Browse my computer for driver software."
Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
Click the Have Disk button. (If the Have Disk option is not present, choose a device category such as Mobile Phone or Storage Device if listed, and click next. The Have Disk button should then appear.)
In the "Install from Disk" dialog, click the Browse button.
Use this window to navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers.
Double-click the "usbaapl" file. (This file will be called "usbaapl64" if you have a 64-bit version of Windows. If you don't see "usbaapl64" here, or if there is no Drivers folder, look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers. instead).
Click OK in the "Install from Disk" dialog.
Click Next and finish the driver-installation steps. Open iTunes to verify that the device is recognized properly.

Not if it's a first gen iPhone, the personal hotspot/internet tethering is only possible on the iPhone 3G and later (and then oly if your carrier supports it) : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3574

Every time I try to use the camera feature it won't work

Basic troubleshooting from the Users Guide is reset, restart, restore. Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

You can't. It requires a 2009 or later 27" iMac to use Target Display Mode. You could try using software like ScreenRecycler.

You can have one HDMI (or DVI monitor via HDMI to DVI adopter) on the HDMI port
Another monitor via one Thunderbolt port and suitable adopter if not a displayport/mini displayport monitor
And use the other Thunderbolt port for Ethernet via a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adopter.

I haven't tried videos on my camera yet. Do you use the Videos App to play them? I don't think they will play in the Photos App.
If yours are in a format that is not in Vazandrew's list, you may need to sync them to your computer and convert them to M4V or MP4 format. You can use a program like HandBrake to do the conversion. <HandBrake> Once converted, you can sync them back to the iPad and they should play.
This may not meet your needs, but the alternative appears to be getting a different camera. I don't know of another Video App that might work.

A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

Re: camera connection kit- I uploaded pictures using the sandisk connection, clicked on 10 pics to delete and ALL of my files were deleted from the sandisk! Is there any way to recover these pics?

You say you uploaded the pictures to the iPad? Then they should still be there, and you can copy them to your computer through iTunes.
There are utility programs for a computer that can recover deleted files from hard drives, and they may work for camera memory cards as well. I've used DiskWarrior for Macintosh to recover pictures from an SD card before.

Try switching from Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) [Some cameras may refer to PTP as Pictbridge or PTP/Pictbridge.] to Mass Storage Device Mode or vise versa on the camera.
Or use the camera's SD card.

I have a late 2012 iMac with a 21" display at home. My work computer is a MacBookPro from early 2011. I would like to connect the laptop to the desktop and use the desktop computer as a monitor. Is this possible? I've heard everything from "yes you just need a USB to USB cable" to "no, only 27" monitors can support this".

That's possible. 27-inch iMacs and iMacs with Thunderbolt (Mid 2011 and later iMacs) can be used as an external display for other computers > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
The Late 2012 iMac has got Thunderbolt ports, and your Early 2011 MacBook Pro has got also Thunderbolt, so you just need a Thunderbolt cable to connect both Macs. Then, press Command and F2 keys in the iMac to use it as an external display for the MacBook

I can't connect to my iTunes library on my Macbook Pro using the Apple Remote app on my iPhone 4S. Why?

I've been looking through the forums for help with this problem. There are a couple of threads with similar problems, but no solved threads and the discussion doesn't seem to go anywhere... As far as I can tell, it's been causing a lot of annoyance for many users, including myself, but it looks like the community's in the dark about why it's happening!
I'm trying to connect to my iTunes library using the Apple Remote app on my new iPhone 4S. As you may know, there are two ways to do this:
Connect via Home Sharing by setting up Home Sharing on both iTunes and the iPhone, or
Connecting directly to iTunes using a four digit passcode.
I've tried both methods, and neither work!
Here's what happens for each method:
From the Remote app start screen, I tap the "Turn on Home Sharing" button. I enter my Apple ID details (which are definitely correct), and get a confirmation message on my phone saying "Home Sharing is on using [my email address]. To control iTunes: Choose Turn On Home Sharing from the Advanced menu in iTunes on your computer." I then go to iTunes, turn on Home Sharing, enter my Apple ID again and get a confirmation message saying "Home Sharing is now on", etc. However, there's no connection formed between my iPhone and my Macbook Pro - the Remote app just shows a message saying "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account [my email address].
From the Remote app start screen, I tap "Add an iTunes Library", and the four digit passcode is shown on my phone. I select the new "Quintin's iPhone" item that appears in the iTunes sidebar under "Devices", and enter the passcode on the screen that appears. Once I've entered it, I get a confirmation message saying "Your Remote is now able to control iTunes" with an "Okay" button. Clicking the "Okay" button makes the screen and the sidebar item disappear completely. On my phone, a message that says "Looking for ..." is shown on the screen with a spinning loading wheel, but nothing happens. After a minute or two, it stops and simply says "Could not find".
After trying both methods, I went through all of the troubleshooting steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1741 . Absolutely no effect.
I should mention that I was experiencing similar problems on my old iPhone 3Gs with an older version of iTunes. I thought it might have been some kind of hardware fault and expected it to clear up once I got the new phone, but the problem is still there. It's a new phone, a new computer, a newer version an iTunes... even a different network I'm trying to connect to it on. Bizarre!
I've even tried using the Mobile Air Mouse remote application instead. However again, the Mobile Air Mouse app on my phone can't pick up the Mobile Air Mouse server on my Mac.
I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Anyone?

I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2. My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone). I was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.
