Connecting through my personal home office to internet when I'm in China?

When traveling on business in China I often can't get to certain websites and have been told that I should set up a network or server using my personal home computer & router which is always on. I'm on a very fast DSL though my home router. I don't know how to go about setting the parameters so when I'm traveling and on a high speed internet connection at my hotel in China I can use my home computer and router to surf the internet and bypass their restrictions & censors. Would like to know how to set up the computer and the router. Step by step if possible or is there a program that would set up my Mac or a set of published directions that I can set my browser to go to and read or printout the diections. I would be most grateful for help with this.

Perhaps what they meant was to have a system connected and running at home and then to use a program such as Apple's Remote Desktop, or Timbuktu, or VNC, etc, to remotely operate the system at home which will not have the same restrictions as your connection in China.
Or - if you setup a VPN connection at home (if your hardware/software can do so) then perhaps getting an IP throught he VPN and using that as a gateway migth get you around the restriction.

My IPOD and Macbook Pro both will not connect to the Itunes store through Itunes says no internet connection, but I can connect through safari and I have a internet connection

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.

I have a first gen iPad, and it will randomly go home from the Internet when I don't press any button.  I have a wireless connection at home.  Is this a known bug?  What can I do?

You maybe running low on memory since you are using the original iPad with iOS 5.1.1 and the iPad is crashing. This may help and it certainly won't hurt.
Quit all apps completely and reboot the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
Do this before you launch Safari again. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear Cookies and Data. You don't have to clear the history.

  • Failing to connect through AFP and FTP from the Internet on Mac Pro?

    Hi all,
I have tried to access my Mac Pro (located at home) from my work place without any success. I used to do this on a regular basis with my old G4, and never faced any problem.
All the boxes are ticked in the Sharing Prefs pane, I have keyed in the correct IP address to access my machine, and for some obscure reason it simply doesn't work...
I'm sure someone must have tried this, I'll be interested to know if I am missing something somewhere...
Looking forward for an answer here!!
    Thanks,

    Hi Ned,
You have hit the right spot! I couldn't remember having set up this NAT for my G4, that was too long ago, but I went back into the Belkin Router and readjusted the settings, and it's all fine now!!
For those interested, it took me a while to find out that with the Belkin 4-Ports Router, you can only direct the traffic for AFP or FTP to ONLY 1 IP Address... A bit short in my case, but I manage to find a workaround where I have assigned 1 IP address for the Mac Pro to do AFP (File Sharing) and 1 IP address on my old G4 to do FTP (File Transfer Protocol)...
And if anyone needs help to connect to their home machine while physically being in another place, I'll be happy to help...
    And it's happening!
    Thanks again Ned, well spotted!!!
    Cheers,

  • Need a hint for home office / 871 does not support port-security - FPM ?

    Hi,
i want to realize the following setup:
    - Central Site 871 with Internet Connection and static IP
    - Home office 871 with Internet Connection and static IP. On that home office router, there should be 2 Vlans: 1 for the office work and one for the user's private PC. All Traffic from the "office" Vlan is being put into a VPN to the central site. All Traffic on the other interface is being natted and goes straight to the internet.
To minimize security issues, i tried to configure port-security, so that the user cannot connect with his private PC to the office LAN ports and vice versa. Unfortunately, port-security seems not to be supported on the 871 (advanced ip services image).
Now i looked for an alternative...and came over to FPM (flexible packet matching).
If i understood right, you can classify packets for example by their source MAC address and if this field matches a specific value (the mac of the work pc), packets can be dropped by a policy.
Of course i cannot avoid that the user connects the work pc together with his private pc (this is then related to the OS Security to keep out viruses, worms, trojans, etc). But i could/want to restrict the internet access with the work pc through "normal" Internet access - the users should not be able to do that (must use the company's proxy).
    I did the follwing config:
    class-map type access-control match-any c2
    match start l2-start offset 48 size 6 regex "0xabcd1234fedc"
match field ETHER source-mac regex "abcd1234fedc"
    policy-map type access-control p2
    class c2
    drop
    interface Vlan1
    ip address 192.168.20.1 255.255.255.0
    ip nat inside
    ip virtual-reassembly
    service-policy type access-control input p2
    service-policy type access-control output p2
As this feature is quite new, i'm not familiar with it's syntax.
I also tried to use "string" instead of regexp, but i'm still able to connect the office pc to the private Lan and i am able to access the "Internet" (currently it's only setup in a lab).
As i understood so far, the offset is the value in bits, and size is in bytes. is that correct?
Has anyone yet some experience with FPM or maybe any hint for me how to realize the requested setup with the 871 routers?
    bets regards,
    Andy

For the FPM feature to work you will need PHDF files for the protocols you want to scan for to be loaded on your routers. The files can be downloaded from cisco's website. In your case you will have to download ether.phdf file.

  • No Cisco VPN Connection through AEBS

I have an HP nc8430 for work and had no problem connecting through a my home cable modem, AEBS and Cisco VPN tunnel to our secure network at work. Inexplicably the wireless connection via the VPN has stopped working. The PC can connect to the Internet directly through the AEBS as long as the VPN is not connected and can directly connect from the cable modem and VPN using an ethernet cable (wired connection). Does anyone have any suggestions? The IT "gurus" at work have been of little help.

    Hi Fred!
I suggest posting your question in a more appropriate forum such as the AirPort for Windows forum found here <http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1014>. This fourm is dedicated to Mac and Windows compatibility issues.
On a side note, while it may be popular to call the folks in the IT world "gurus" while rolling your eyes, keep in mind that just because they can't help you doesn't mean they don't know their jobs. (I would never expect a General Practioner doctor to be knowledgeable in heart surgery.) In this case they should only be expected to support your computer connecting directly to the Internet and then to your company network. Your network (the AEBS) is your responsibility, not theirs. If they try to help you and fail then be glad you at least have an IT group that's open to working with you. Some aren't willing to even go that far.
Best of luck finding your answer! bill

I can't use 4g even when my phone tell me that I'm connected. So I can't use internet when I'm not at home. I never had that problem with my Lumia 925 just with my 930 and it's frustrating that I can't find any information on why.

What did your carrier say about this?
Where are you and your carrier is who?
Did you make any changes to the accesspoint settings?
    Has it ever worked?
If it ever worked, what changed?
Are you on you own network or happen to be roaming?
Have you tried a new SIM?

Assuming he works for a company, the first person to talk to is whoever is in charge of the company's network. Most company networks are firewalled, and usually won't permit access except by authorized users with company-approved VPN software.

  • We traded our home internet service for a Sprint Hot Spot.  The hot spot does not have an ethernet port to connect through.  Can we connect our time capsule to the wireless hot spot?

Hello, we switched our home internet service from an ethernet modem to a wireless hot spot.
Do you know if there is a way to connect our time capsule to the hot spot?
Everything I read only suggests connecting through an ethernet cable.  I'm hoping there is a way to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!!!

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.

My macbook air is not getting internet connection through our home wifi.  It was working fine yesterday until I took the Air out of the house and used it on another wifi connection.  One question is how to delete some of the networks that I don't use.  Would too many networks cause the internet connection to fail?
    Thanks.

Would too many networks cause the internet connection to fail?
It shouldn't but sometimes deleting the list of networks actually does solve the problem you are describing. Have you turned WiFi off and then back on on the computer?

I just purchased an Apple TV MD199LL/A, got it connected to my internet.  I can go to Youtube and watch videos.  I'm able to access Netflix.  All seems well except I cannot connect to my iTunes account.  I have gone through the list - home sharing is set correctly on both iTunes and my Apple TV.  The userid is correct on both.
Message "Loading prodrigu's library" and then "Could not connect to prodrigu's library".
I had this same problem when I installed the REMOTE application on my ipad.  Everything on the list was affirmative, but had the same problem not being able to connect to my iTunes.
What is missing?  Is there a firewall setting that could be causing this?

I don't mean to be facetious but sometimes the simplest things are overlooked.  To connect to your library you have to have the computer where the iTunes library is located running and with iTunes open.  It also needs to be on the same network.  My network is dual band and works with either stream but a friend of mine does not.  He has to set the computer and the Apple TV to the same band.  Hope this helps.

  • Re: Connecting though internet when client Macs are on office network

I have a small company with two iMacs at work which are on a network with several other PC's. I have a home office with a Power Mac G5 (not intel based) and a satellite office 1500 miles away in PHX with a MacBook (brand new). I am trying to be able to access and control my main office computers using Apple Remote Desktop.
When I am at the main office with the MacBook and connected to the internet in the office I can use the ARD to control the two iMacs. But when I go home or down to Phoenix I cannot.
I have searched the forums high and low, but I must be computer illiterate. I cannot understand how to make it work. I assume there are some firewalls in the main office? Please help!!!

To be able to connect to a workstation from outside it's network, the ports that ARD uses must be open on both ends of the connection. ARD uses ports 3293 and 5900 so those must be open.
If your workstations get their addresses from an NAT device rather than being "real", the ports also need to be forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and updating function, so if your Macs are getting their IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward a port to a single workstation, you can only get reports, push package/files to etc. for a single workstation.
ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and control, though, and there are a range of IP addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded to the first workstation. You would, I believe, need to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD client cannot listen on any port other than 5900 while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as 5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You can then use the following information:
Remote Desktop 2: How to specify a port number for a VNC client
    to connect.
The only other options are: 1) to run the ARD administrator on a workstation on the network, and then take control of that system from outside, either via VNC or another copy of ARD, or 2) set up a virtual private network (VPN) so that when you connect from outside, your admin system is officially part of the local network.
    Hope this helps.
