  • Moved Oracle 11.2 XE Directory, Connected to Idle Instance

    So I will start off by stating I have moved the regular install location of Oracle 11.2 XE to a logical volume (/oracle) I had created on my RHEL 6.6 server. After shutting down both the database and the Oracle listener, I performed...
        $ cp -R /u01/app/* /oracle
        $ rm -rf /u01/app/oracl
        $ ln -s /oracle/oracle /u01/app/oracle
    Then restarted the listener and the database. Now when I attempt to run the following as the user 'oracle' I get a message...
        $ sqlplus
        Enter user-name: sys / as sysdba
        Enter password: ****
        Connected to idle instance.
    Further, when I attempt a startup I get an error.
        > startup
        ORA-45301: XE Edition single instance violation error
    I have attempted the solutions found  to no avail.
    Here is the output for my listener controller:

    I'm really quite lost as to what to attempt next. I know I could just reinstall and keep the directory in its proper location but I need it to be in it's own logical volume.

    Already solved this issue. The problem was due to incorrect set of env variables:
    export ORACLE_BASE=/home/oracle/
    export ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/11G
    resulted:
    ORACLE_HOME=/home/oracle//11G
    Linux is capable of retrieving directory content if path is set with *"//"* but seems like oracle does not. Due to this I've got this error. After resetting ORACLE_HOME variable, everything worked.

  • Oracle instance is running but sqlplus "/as sysdba" says connected to idle.

    Hi,
    Oracle RAC is running(started the RAC using "srvctl start database -d hacmp") but when i am trying to connect to database using sqlplus "/as sysdba" it says "connected to idle instance".
    Any idea what could be the issue here?

    Connected to an idle instance.
    SQL

    It's not a SQL*Plus bug but a Oracle feature: when you try to connect to a local Oracle instance Oracle computes the shared memory key (used by the instance SGA) using ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID: if you add a character to ORACLE_HOME, the shared memory key will be different and Oracle does not find the instance and says "connected to an idle instance".

  • Connect idle instance

    Hi all,
    I am using Oracle 10.2.0.
    How to connect an idle instance from client system using SQL*Plus.
    Thankx

    Thanks Amardeep,
    I opened sql*plus and typed in user field as /nolog.
    And did as:
    SQL> connect as sys@db as sysdba;
    SP2-0306: Invalid option.
    Usage: CONN[ECT] [logon] [AS {SYSDBA|SYSOPER}]
    where <logon> ::= <username>[<password>][@<connect_identifier>] | /.
    I am getting error.
    Is the correct process what i did.
    Thanks

  • UNDOTBS1 and SYSAUX Tablespace Filename Mismatch in Oracle 11g XE

    Hi,
    We have installed Oracle 11g XE 32 bit on Windows and found that Tablespace name and filenames are mismatched for UNDOTBS1, SYSAUX.
    If you run following query:
    SELECT TABLESPACE_NAME, FILE_NAME FROM DBA_DATA_FILES; You will get below output:
    TABLESPACE_NAME                    FILE_NAME
    ============================================================================
    USERS                C:\ORACLE\ORACLE11GXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\USERS.DBF
    UNDOTBS1           C:\ORACLE\ORACLE11GXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\SYSAUX.DBF
    SYSAUX                C:\ORACLE\ORACLE11GXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\UNDOTBS1.DBF
    SYSTEM                C:\ORACLE\ORACLE11GXE\APP\ORACLE\ORADATA\XE\SYSTEM.DBFNotice the difference between UNDOTBS1 and SYSAUX.
    UNDOTBS1 tablespace has filename SYSAUX.DBF while
    SYSAUX tablespace has filename UNDOTBS1.DBF
    Is this a bug or just a wrong name mapping?
    Will this affects the internal behavior of tablespace as well for undo tablespace and APEX Installation?
    Regards,
    Sohil Bhavsar.

    Error: ORA-03297 ... related to this mismatch of UNDOTBS1 with SYSAUXActually its related to trying to resize a file smaller than the existing extents in use, so yes, restores aren't the only place that could cause confusion from the "incorrect" datafile names.
    Fixing it could be done in one pass if you don't mind adjusting filenames so they don't clash, i.e. shut down your database instance and move the files at the OS, startup mount and rename the files in the database.
    Don't use the services applet, the instance has to be shutdown with sqlplus, leave the database service running. If you try to open the database with OS files renamed but not corrected in the instance, the database won't open if there are troubles with the undo datafile.

  • Forgot my oracle 11g username and password

    hi all
    forgot my oracle 11g username and password , how can i recover them although i tried multiple ways as using / as sysdba and it didnot work .

    Please in addition to your own words, post full copy-paste of command line sessions including actual error messages (e.g. cannot access database is not an actual error).
    Try from a command window (cmd), assuming Windows platform:
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    If it says "Connected to idle instance.", try:
    SQL> startup
    Did you just install XE or was it working before and now suddenly it doesn't? (what changed in the latter case?)

  • Connecting to new instance. to create DB manually

    can any body send me the commands to create and connect to idle instance to create DB Manually, setp by step plz......

    <sigh>
    Oracle missed out on that one. Should have included that in the doc right? I dont know why I could see all this in the doc that you couldnt.
    Step 1: Decide on Your Instance Identifier (SID)
    Step 2: Establish the Database Administrator Authentication Method
    Step 3: Create the Initialization Parameter File
    Step 4: Connect to the Instance
    Step 5: Create a Server Parameter File (Recommended)
    Step 6: Start the Instance
    Step 7: Issue the CREATE DATABASE Statement
    Step 8: Create Additional Tablespaces
    Step 9: Run Scripts to Build Data Dictionary Views
    Step 10: Run Scripts to Install Additional Options (Optional)
    Step 11: Back Up the Database.
    No offense, but when it comes to reliability, confidence & faith regarding Oracle Databases, I would prefer Oracle Documentation on others anytime. Having said that, you are free to follow the guidelines of any XYZ as long as they are reliable and you have faith in them.
    Your issue is resolved and that was important.
    Best of Luck!

  • Unable to Login to Idle Instance from SQL*Plus in windows

    Hello,
    I'm cloning the db from windows to windows enviornment. At auxilary instance after configuring the Listener and making Password file to right folder when I try to connect to Idle Instance through sql*plus by follwring connad
    c:\sqlplus sys/password as sysdba
    It gives me ORA-12518 Tns: Listener could not hand off client conenction error
    Then I put the follwing parameter in listener.ora DIRECT_HANDOFF_TTC_LISTENER=OFF and restart listener and then try to connect it gives me Ora-12560: TNS protocol adapter error.
    I try to connect through tnsnames but give me same error.
    Kindly tell me how to resolve this issue as its not allowing me to connect to an idle instance so that I can go further.
    I'm using 10gR2 on windows server 2003.
    Regards,
    Abbasi

    follow the steps to clone database:
    # 1. Backup the source database.
    To use RMAN duplicate an RMAN backup of the source database is required. If there is already one available, skip to step 2. If not, here is a quick example of how to produce an RMAN backup. This example assumes that there is no recovery catalog available:
    rman target sys@<source database> nocatalog
    RMAN>backup database plus archivelog ;
    RMAN> backup archivelog all;
    This will backup the database and archive logs.
    # 2. Produce a pfile for the new database
    This step assumes that the source database is using a spfile. If that is not the case, simply make a copy the existing pfile.
    Connect to the source database as sysdba and run the following:
    create pfile='init<new database sid>.ora' from spfile;
    This will create a new pfile in the $ORACLE_HOME/database directory.
    The new pfile will need to be edited immediately. If the cloned database is to have a different name to the source, this will need to be changed, as will any paths. Review the contents of the file and make alterations as necessary.
    Because in this example the cloned database will reside on the same machine as the source, Oracle must be told how convert the filenames during the RMAN duplicate operation. This is achieved by adding the following lines to the newly created pfile:
    db_file_name_convert=(<source_db_path>,<target_db_path>)
    log_file_name_convert=(<source_db_path>,<target_db_path>)
    # 3. Create bdump, udump & cdump directories
    Create bdump, udump & cdump directories as specified in the pfile
    # 4. Create a service
    c:/>oradim –new –sid <clonedatabasename> –intpwd <pwd>
    eg:
    c:>oradim –new –sid clonedb –intpwd oracle
    # 6. Duplicate the database
    From sqlplus, start the instance up in nomount mode:
    startup nomount
    Exit sqlplus, start RMAN and duplicate the database. As in step 1, it is assumed that no recovery catalog is available. If one is available, simply amend the RMAN command to include it.
    rman target sys@<source_database> nocatalog auxiliary /
    duplicate target database to <clone database name>;
    thats it
    For RMAN Cloning refer:
    follow the documentation replace the destinations/locations with your location/folder/destination in source and target database.

    http://www.shutdownabort.com/quickguides/clone_rman.php

    for manual cloning in windows refer the link below:

  • 2 instances 1 db  11g Win 2003

    Hi Guys,
    I have 2 instances running on 1 database. How do I move between the 2
    On solaris this is what I'll do: export ORACLE_SID=newsid
    set ORACLE_SID=newsid
    On Windows what to do?

    hi,
    You set the oracle_sid and connect to db- it will let u know whether connected to "idle instance" or not - that provides the information for your whether instance is up and running or not.
    Other options would be
    1. Check Task Manager for the ORACLE.EXE process. If it is present, then the service started.
    2. Check the Alert Log for the database. If the problem is not with the database, there will be no indication in the log that the database even tried to start.
    3. Check the oradim.log in the $ORACLE_HOME/database directory for errors. Check the date on the log file as versions before 9i did not date/time stamp the entries.

    in both explain plan only difference is
    9 BITMAP CONVERSION TO ROWIDS
    8 BITMAP AND
    5 BITMAP CONVERSION FROM ROWIDS
    but is bitmap degrading performance lot?
    or suggest me what other parameter i can see so 2nd instance gives me better performace.

    I see more differences.
    In plan 1:
    * 16      INDEX RANGE SCAN      idx_bf_creation_date      76           1 (0)     00:00:01
    in Plan 2:
    1 INDEX FULL SCAN (MIN/MAX) INDEX REPORTSDB.idx_bf_creation_date Cost: 3 Bytes: 8 Cardinality: 1
    So this is not about "bitmap" good/bad, it about the access strategy which changed due to differences in data statistics etc. To analyze more, I'd help a LOT if those plans would be formated in a good and same way, use around it to do so.

  • Upgrade ASM Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 to ASM Oracle 11G R2 on Windows 2008 SP2

    Please advice on procedure or where I can find information on upgrading ASM from Oracle 10G to Oracle 11G R2 (Winwdows 2008 SP2 64bit environment) for mutiple Oracle instances (not a RAC environrment).
    The current scenario is as follow:
    - Two oracle homes; one for ASM instance and another for the Oracle Databases (in current case only two oracle instances possiblly more at a later time). Both (ASM and Oracle databases) have the same version of Oracle 10.2.4.0.
    The Oracle database home can't be upgraded due to application restricition (Vendor Application not tested on Oracle 11G) but will like to upgrade the ASM instance to Oracle 11G (Oraclle 11G R2).
    Questions:
    - Is is a feasable solution? Can I upgrade ASM instance to Oracle 11G R2 to take advantage of new features? Will the ASM upgrade scenario is compatible with the Oracle Database Instance running Oracle 10G? Any possible issues that I should be aware or concerns?
    Is it possible to have ASM running in Oracle 11G R2 and service the need of Oracle database instance running in 10G?
    Please advice or where I can obtained information on the matter. Also possibly if someone has done it on Windows 2008 SP2 (not Windows 2008R2).
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks so I can upgrade the ASM Home instance and leave the Oracle Databases home on Oracle 10.2.0.4.
    I agree with you not just 100%, actually 120%. Fortunately, the vendor is finally understanding by pressure provided by DBAs and Application Teams that they are very behind the curve. It is working and by summer we should have an oracle 11G compatible product.
    The same thought went when I was told of their compatability database level.
