Connecting to stereo

This is a dumb question. I confess I'm new to the technology world. But let me make sure I've got this straight. You have to have a stereo system that has an audio/in port in order to connect said stereo to Airport Express, right?
The reason I ask, is that my stereo is almost 4 years old and only has a headphone jack. Sigh!

Yes - you need a sound system with an audio input to connect the Airport Express to.

  • What is the process for connecting ethernet.  Have ethernet cable connected to stereo received for internet radio and Blue Ray. However Network System Preferences indicates ethernet not connected and has red dot to left.  Note Airport wireless is working.

What is the process for connecting airport extreme ethernet?  I have ethernet cables connected to stereo receiver for internet radio and another to blue ray player.  The system preference network indicates "ethernet not connected" with red dot to left of this message.  The airport wireless works and has green dot to left of it.  The stereo receiver and blue ray player do not respond and give message not connect to internet.  Thank you.  /  cfpirate

It worked for me finally. I took out the DNS numbers in airport admin utility, and restarted the airport express. I do not remember putting the DNS numbers in, I wonder from where the airport express got those numbers.
    After restarting, it worked.
    Thanks!

  • Some audio questions (connection to stereo and streaming audio)

    1) Whats the best way to connect my stereo? Rught now I am using 1/8" from the headphone jack to the RCA jacks on my stereo. Is there a better way ( I see on the apple store site some type of monster cable that looks like it may perform a similar function). My stereo is older, so there is no optical line in or out.
    2) Whats the best way to capture streaming audio ? Ive downloaded trial versions of sound studio, audio hijack, and irecord, but havent had any luck. Is there some special type of hardware configuration I need to do? The sources I am streaming from are dead.net and archive.org
    Thanks

The optical sould out is far far better than the headphone out. My sound system is old but I use the MD player as an analogue /digital converter. If you dont have an MD player with this option you need to find an analogue /digital converter. There are loads on the market. You will hear the difference.
For recording streamed sounds I use Audio Highjack. The most important thing you need to do is create a source for each program you want to record from. I record the BBC so I created a source in Highjack (left window in the record prefs) for Safari. If I want to record from
the other progs I have to do the same for them.

  • Using AirPort Extreme hub to connect to stereo

Is it possible to use a second Airport Extreme hub to connect to stereo speakers?
If it is, what kind of cable might one use to do this?
    Thanks

No, the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does not have any type of audio output.
Are you thinking of the AirPort Express which does have an audio output?

  • Airport extreme direct connect to stereo

Hello. Thanks for any help you can provide. I have an airport extreme base station right next to my stereo. Currently I am connecting to the base station through wifi from a remote mac. This remote mac has my itunes library, and I am connecting through wifi to an airport express to that stereo. Is there a means to connect the stereo directly to the airport extreme base station - there is not audio out port on the extreme....If I do this I could eliminate the airport express - which seems a bit superfluous. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I was trying to find a work around from the lack of a audio port. I wonder if there is a product to convert the airport extreme's ethernet ports to a stereo jack... then again, I may have to purchase the apple tv to do it...

  • HOW CAN I CONNECT A STEREO MICROPHONE TO MY SONY HXR-NX5U CAMCORDER?

I recently purchased a SONY HXR-NX5U professional camcorder, and want to be able to connect an external, wired, STEREO mike to it. But I don't quite understand HOW to do it. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
The camera has 2 XLR mike-sockets, each of which is obviously for a MONO, not STEREO, mike.
And the wire of the STEREO mike that I want to be able to connect has a STEREO MINIPLUG (3.5mm), not an XLR plug, at the end
Is the solution about CONNECTING this external STEREO mike as simple as doing what I've TRIED to do (but doesn;t seem to work) -- which is: (a)insert, into the camera's 2 XLR-sockets,  2 XLR-plug-to-phonosocket adapters, (b) plug into those 2 phonosockets a Y-Connector which, at the "Y" end, has 2 phonoplugs and which, at the 3rd end, has a STEREO MINISOCKET for the microphone, and (c) then insert the STEREO mike's miniplug into the Y-connector's minisocket?
That's what was recommended to me and which I've tried, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe I just don't understand yet how to turn off the camera's built-in mike and turn on this external STEREO mike -- but the built-in mike keeps working and this external stereo mike -- hooked-up this way -- stays inactive.
    ANY SOLUTIONS?
ALSO, I've been told that hooking up a STEREO mike this way -- assuming it works -- would give me REDUCED SOUND-QUALITY. Is that actually so? And if so, why -- and what can I do about it?

    A few things...
    1. If you are still hearing the internal mic check the switches on the side panel and make sure the internal is not being fed to channels 1 or 2. The ability to mix internal/external mics is a feature of the camera.
    2. How are you powering the mic? If it doesn't have it's own battery/power supply it is expecting phantom power from the camera which it will not be receiving via the adaptors.
    3. If the mic has its own power you should be able to do this via the Y cable provided the inputs are set to MIC and the side switches are set to INPUT 1 and INPUT two for each channel.
Hope this helps. Feel free to give our support team a call at 800 883 6817 if you'd like to discuss with a Sony tech.

  • Can I connect a stereo receiver to Apple TV and stream iTunes to my stereo?

I copied this question from a discussion archived from 2008, it's pretty much my question, although I hope to get a little more information on the answers... My stereo receiver (Sony STR-D511) is an older one but currently my TV (signal from Directv DVR) plays through the receiver on video 1 but I can't get the Apple TV to play through the stereo... My TV is quite new, a philips 1080, and the Apple TV is hooked in to HDMI 3, the Directv box is hooked into AV3, I believe I'm having issue with all the different sources my TV has and somehow I'm unable to cross the paths (make the connections) any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I would like the ability to play my itunes via Apple TV through my stereo receiver so that it's on the Stereo speakers rather then the TV Speakers.

Hi, and firstly thanks for the reply... I think my TV back has different labeled areas, so I took a photo and posted -- I'm bad with the electronics terms and the  translating of it all - ( I attached a pic) - I hope this helps with the photos you can also see where I have
thing plugged in - that one with svideo/rca cables is AV 3, where my DVRbox is going - the red/white cables on the right without a yellow go to my video 1 input on my receiver... the cables on the side are for my dvd player which the audio only works thru TV as well... then also below the red/white ones is HDMI3 where the apple tv is going... that's why i thought the stereo would work because its right below the cables that go to the stereo?
i hope this helps thanks again for your time
    cheers
    L-

  • Help, i want to connect my stereo to listen to itunes

i have a new stereo receiver which works fine with my nano as it has a port in the front.
How do I connect it to my imac? there are numberous hdmi ports in the back. i have looked over all the instructions and am usually good at this. I bought a hdmi cable and converter to plug into thunderbolt but no new options come up in speakers.

If your iMac is right next to the stereo, the audio out cable will work.
If your receiver is somewhere else in the house, I suggest you get an Apple Airport Express Router, and place it near the stereo. Connect with an optical cable or a cable that is minijack on one end and red and white RCA jacks on the other end.
A third option is an Apple TV which would enable you to use the HDMI ports. I have an TV, but I use it for watching video on my TV. I drive the audio for the rest of the house through the Airport Express.
I control my iTunes from my Mac. The AV Receiver is in an upstairs closet. It works like a champ.

  • Connect to stereo receiver via hdmi

Is it possible to connect my macbook pro to my stereo receiver with an hdmi cable.  The receiver does not have a USB ports

Yes. You need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. Once you have the adapter, just plug in the HDMI cable to an HDMI port on your reciever.
    A good, cheap adapter -> http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311&se q=1&format=2.

  • Problem with Nokia N8 connected to stereo?

I have a 3.5 to RCA cable to connect my nokia n8 to a stereo system. Problem is when I put a song on the phone it plays too fast on the stereo - not by much but still unpleasant to listen to. If I connect my laptop to the same stereo with the same cable, the speed of the songs is normal. Do you know how I can fix this? Thanks

The stereo sure isn't the problem, because the 3,5mm stereo out delivers an analog signal. Seems to bee the player or the decoder. Maybe you are using an exotic compression for your music. What file format are you using? What program for compression? What is the source of your music? Does the music play in regular speed if you liste to it through the telephone's speaker? Are you using the standard music player of your phone?
If i had to make a wild guess, i would say that you are trying to play 48kHz filesand your phone can't handle them...

  • Connecting my stereo to my iMac???

It's seems like a simple question, but not to me. I have an about 7 year old Panasonic compact stereo (CD changer, tuner, even dual cassette player, a real antique). I do know there's a setting for "Games", but I've never used it (I never had a game console). I thought that may attach somehow.
I not that experienced with this, so feel free to ask me more. I did see what looks like a cable out plug in the back, and there is something yellow hole for video out.
It's a G4 iMac (see below for specs.). I have iTunes, Quicktime, iMovie and more. Don't know if that makes a difference.
    Thanks much!
    Thank you much

hey allano i got a "game" setting on my stereo and i got a cord that runs from the headphone outlet on your mac, just like you plug headphones into your ipod etc. and then it would have the red, white cords, or red white yellow but usually just visual on the other end of the cord and connect it to your stereo and press the game button and it should play through your stereo.
sometimes it takes a few seconds to start playing through if you just connected it like everytime you use the stereo.
hopefully this helps you, but its similar to what keats said so it might not help

  • Nano won't connect to stereo dock

I am having trouble getting my 5th gen nano to connect to my home stereo dock. It returns a message on the nano "Unrecognised Device" Older nanos 2nd & 3rd Gen work but my new one won't. Any suggestions how I fix this?

Call the home stereo manufacturer. You need to find out from them if their docking system is compatible with the iPod Nano 5th gen with video.
    From the iPod Nano FAQ
*+Question: Can I connect iPod to my home stereo?+*
*+Answer: Yes.* With its powerful 60 mW amplifier and 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, iPod will sound great on your home stereo. Third-party stereo adapters are available for listening to your iPod music library using home stereo speakers. *Compatible devices must be self-powered and support audio output through a 3.5 mm headphone jack.* For optimal sound quality when using external speakers, set the iPod volume at less than half the maximum output and adjust your listening volume through your stereo controls. This prevents overamplification, which can cause distortion and reduce audio quality.+

I am having trouble getting my 5th gen nano to connect to my home stereo dock. It returns a message on the nano "Unrecognised Device" Older nanos 2nd & 3rd Gen work but my new one won't. Any suggestions how I fix this?

You posted to the wrong area of discussions. This is the 5th Generation iPod group (the video full sized iPods that were released previous to the "Classic" models). If you are asking a Nano question, you want to post to this area...

  • Connecting to stereo system

Which is better, running cables from the iPod's headphone outlet, or from the USB connector at the bottom? Cables running to the stereo are available in both formats. Which produces better sound?

If it connects using USB, is the stereo system controlling the iPod?
If so, I would say USB, only because the stereo system is probably getting a digital signal. The headphone signal is analog. But I believe there is a cable length limit for USB, so check that out before making the USB cable too long.
But, I'm just guessing about the sound quality. I don't have a stereo system with an USB port.
