Connecting two external Firewire HDs and work with them

I have two external HDs. One is a 1TB MyBook, permantently connected to my Mac via Firewire (my entire iTunes and iPhoto libraries are in there), and a smaller 120GB portable SmartDisk, that I use to backup my startup disk periodically using SuperDuper.
Both the 'Book and the SmartDisk have two Firewire ports each. Everytime I need to backup my Mac, I disconnect the 'Book and plug the SmartDisk to the only FW port of my MacMini.
Am I doing extra work by doing this? Can I connect both HD with each other and make this process easier? I would like to connect the SmartDisk to the 'Book and clone my Mac to it just like that, then disconnect it and keep it safe as usual. I'm not familiar with the "daisy-chaining", nor the FireWire issues, pardon me if this is too basic to ask.
Thanks in advance,
JJ

You should be able to "daisy-chain" the drives. That's exactly what the extra ports are for. Unlike USB, FW was designed for this serial looping.
However, I recall some time ago that occasionally the second drive in the chain was not recognized.
Try it. You certainly cannot damage anything since that's how FW works.

I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when using USB external drives.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

It is not clear if these are the same drives, just connected
    differently, or different drives?
One thing that may be happening is that the drives firmware
itself is putting it to sleep when inactive.  Many drives on
the market have ths feature and it is turned on by default
and require a drive utility from the manufacturer to disable it.

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

  • Problems to connect two external firewire hardrives at the same time

I try to have both external connected at the same time one via Firewire 800 and the other via Firewire 400 and it doesn't work. My solution is to change to Usb 2.0 one of them. Maybe I have a problem with my Firewire? How can I check if the ports are working properly?
Thank you in advance for any help!

I'm having a similar problem. New iMac 24" with one FW 400 and one FW 800. I have a Seagate in an external case connected to the FW 400 and I got a new LaCie D2 triple interface and am trying to connect via the FW 800. Both drives have their own power supplies. When I connect the LaCie to the 800 port, it mounts and works fine. But as soon as I connect the Seagate to the 400 port, the LaCie icon disappears and I get a message about improper removal of a device. So, both drives work fine when connected one at a time, but don't play nicely together. I will appreciate any suggestions.

  • Can I connect TWO external firewire drives?

    Hi - i have a G5 Powermac 2.3 DP
I have a Lacie External Hard Drive connected already to the firewire 800 port, but I want to know if I can have another connected to the Firewire 400 port at the same time (and actually transfer data betweeen the 2 external drives).
ie. are the firewire 800 and 400 ports independent?
    Thx

No problem on connecting a second and even a third FW drive. I have 1 FW drive connected to the FW 800 port and two others daisy chained to the FW 400 port in the rear of my G5, still leaving the port on the front open. They all work fine and I can easily copy files from one to another. Only two issues: some people claim that if you have a FW 400 device and a FW 800 device connected, then everything works at 400 speed. I don't know if that is true and may some other poster will confirm. The only other "problem" is that my Canon Optura Camcorder will not interface via FW if anyother FW device is connected. Apparently this is true for Canon cameras and maybe some other cameras as well. But HD drives are not a problem.

  • Purchasing external firewire drive to work with Canon HV-30/MacBook Pro

I want to purchase an external firewire drive to run FCE4. I have a Canon HV-30 (Vixia). I have read that external FireWire drives do not work well with Canon DV cameras? Is this true of the Canon HV cameras? and if so, has anyone had success with a particular firewire drive model with this camera?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
I don't know for this model but it's the implementation of firewire protocol on Canon's models that could make a problem.
So, you could have problem but it's not absolute.

You cannot have a extended desktop using a splitter.  All that does is mirror the pair attached to the splitter.
You can do this however using a Matrox DualHead2Go.
Other solution would be to attach one monitor to your video out as you do the splitter and attach the other via USB (assuming the adapter supports the monitor's resolution).

  • Connect two external monitors to mini DP(using a mini DP to VGA adapter) and the VGA out at once

I am trying to  connect two external monitors to mini DP(using a mini DP to VGA adapter) and the VGA out at once. Windows recognize both monitors as well. But it dowsn't let me use all three monitors at once(see the below image). In the dropdown, it lists all three monitors. Problem is there are two active displays I can select.

    Mavec wrote:
I would like to add a third monitor.
The GPU(s) in your T400 (and most other laptop brands) will support two different displays concurrently.  If you want to support more than two different displays concurrently, you will need another GPU external to the T400.
Generally, if you want to use two external displays on a T400 you will nee dto use a docking station.
I have read messages on various fora on this topic and know that there are a number of ways of doing this, but as I have never had a need to do this myself I can't tell you how to go about it.

Bad idea. There are no supported iPhone carriers in Iceland, thus some features may or may not work. Further, there will be no warranty or support for a US purchased iPhone in Iceland...your friend will be on their own. If you still want to go down this road, make sure you purchase an officially unlocked iPhone(GSM model) directly from Apple.

When I'm travelling I import photos onto my laptop's external hard drive and work on the images using virtual copies to develop them. When I get home, I want to import all the photos together with the developed virtual copies fromt the laptop's external HD into LR5 on my PC desktop. But if I use the import button in LR I only get the original photo, not the developed copies. What am I doing wrong?

Since your current editing workflow is based around Virtual Copies there are no actual files containing the edit data. Therefore, you'll need to use the 'Import from another catalog' option ( see File menu).

Getting this messg on Factime "could not sign in, check your network connection", but I have Wifi activated and working with internet?? what can I do?

Usually it's because you are not making internet connection via wifi. Open Safari and see if it connects.

Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

    hi
i have one small question: is there any real harm into connecting two external speakers directly to the mac without the help of an amplifier?
    will there be any problems?
    thanx for replying

I did actually hook 'em up, without the amplifier and it does work with an acceptable level of sound(sounds quite nice) but i need to know whether this will har my mac in the long run.

  • What external DVD writer would work with Toshiba LX830?

Trying to connect an external DVD writer to Toshiba LX830 via USB.
Nothing will work - tried 3 writers and different software.
Does it matter that all the writers are USB 2.0 and the 830 is USB 3.0?
The best I've got is to 3%, then it just sits there.
Can anyone recommend an external writer that WILL work with the 830?

    Hi
Did you try to connect this external CD/DVD drive to all available USB ports?
As far as I know the Toshiba LX830 All in one computer supports 6 USB ports and two of these USB ports support ultra-fast USB 3.0 standard.
So even if the external USB ODD (optical disk drive) would not support USB 3.0, it should work in connection with the other 4 USB 2.0 ports
