Connection to a windows network to share printer

I have a windows PC in my home office. How can I connect my Mac Pro to this network so I can share the printer the PC uses.

I am wishing to do the same thing, wirelessly printer from my Mac Book Pro to my Canon printer connected to my PC which runs XP.
I really don't want to spend anymore money but will if neccessary. I have been unsuccessfull in connecting my MBP to the network in order to see my PC. I can connect to the internet though.
Can anyone help? I am new to the Mac world. I have been reading a lot and it seems a lot of people are connecting an Airport Base thing on their printer to get this to work, do I need this?
Thanks!

  • Connecting to my Windows Network

Hello everyone. I recently purchased a new 24" iMac, and I'm having trouble connecting to my windows network, and my printer. My Windows Vista Home Premium is connected directly to a router, and my printer (HP Officejet J5780) is connected directly to the computer, so I route through the computer to print from the rest of my house. However, on my iMac, the network itself never pops up. I set the workgroup on the iMac to be exactly the same as the Windows, but I still can't see the network. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks!

    Hello!
    I've just bought an iMac....
If it's a brand new machine, you should be in this forum area:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
as you've found the forums for much older iMAcs with G4 processors
or you can also ask in the Leopard OS Networking sub-forum here:

If your iMac is an older model, then post the model details and we can go from there.

HOW can i sent FAX through HP laser jet 3050 which is connected on a Windows Network.
I m also connected to this Network and i print through HP LJ 3050. How can i sent fax through HP LJ 3050?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Apparently there is no HP software support for the HP 3050 fax or scan functions with OS X 'Lion' 10.7:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02950970 #A1
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?&objectID=c0292511 4
    Alternatives?
    1) Run a Windows client on the Mac using Boot Camp or one of the available virtualization programs like Parallels, VMware Fusion, and others so you can run the latest Windows print/fax/scan driver.
    2) If your Mac hardware supports an older OS X version, downgrade to one (Snow Leopard?) that still had support for print, fax and scan.
    3) Buy a newer printer. A 2007 model is 5+ years old, and should now be fully depreciated in a business.

  • TS3147 connect OS X 10.9.2 macbook air to windows 7 network and share printer (Brother HL-2230) connected via USB to the same network

Would like to share printer Brother HL-2230 on windows 7 network.  Using Windows 7  "Homegroup" is not an option.
The printer (HL-2230) is connected via USB to win 7 computer.  Before I updated OS to 10.9.2  it (Macbook air) had  HL-2230 as one of its' priinters and was able to print.  Now a print request hangs on "Hold for authentication".
I have already reset printer system and re-installed printer x2 - no luck.
I have already connected WiFi Epson XP-200 to the Macbook air - runs fine, no problem.
thx for any help that can lead to the resolution of this problem.

  • Connecting to a windows network

I am an MBA and Lion OS  newbie of one day.  The basic interface is straight forward but I have a problem getting my new laptop to work with my existing Windows 7 network.  Specifically I have a file server (Lacie EDMINI NAS) and I can see it (sometimes) and it lists the directories but when I try to open a directory it tells me that the device is not avilable/present.  After I click the device in the finder sidebar it seems to disappear.

I have the same problem at my work. We have a full Windows 2003 server and I can't connect to it. I can print through the server and connect to the internet, but can't connect to the server to see the files, although the server thinks that I logged in (the log file shows that it let me in), but for some reason apple doesn't see that.
The only solution so far was that I've made an ftp access to the windows server, this way I can connect and see the files on windows 2003. matter fact I use sftp to do that to make it secure. that means your server admin has to create and sftp option to connect to the server. the good side of that is that you can have access to your files on the windows server from everywhere.
but if anyone has any idea how to connect to a windows 2003 server, please let me know, because so far I know at least 4 or 5 businesses who has the same problem. that needs to be solved by apple.
one more option is to run parallels on your machine and through that you can access and share files with windows servers, that is what I am also doing and it works fine, just a bit slow.

  • Ibook connecting to dlink/windows network

I have always been a PC user and had a dlink wireless router set up for my PCs. I just got my ibook today. It connects through a "default" network and I can access the internet. On this network is also a shared printer that I used from PC laptops to print. Is there a way to connect and share files with these computers, or more importantly - connect to use the shared printer?
    thanks

Though for 10.3 you should find that they work for 10.4

  • I can't print wirelessly from my iMac although it is connected to the same network as the printer and I can print fine from my iPad to the same network

I have downloaded and installed the driver from the HP website for the HP Envy 5530. While I can send documents from my iMac to the printer using a USB cable, it will not print wirelessly. When I tried to install the wireless connection, I got the dialogue box saying "Devise not reachable" and it suggested I check whether the iMac is connected to the wireless network (it is and the signal strength is excellent, Safari runs well) and that I check the printer is connected to the same network (it is). I am able to print items from my iPad wirelessly using the network so I don't understand why the iMac won't recognise the printer wirelessly when everything else works fine.

From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Advanced
    and check the box marked
Include Bonjour in the Bookmarks menu
if it's not already checked. Then select
Bookmarks ▹ Bonjour ▹ Name of printer
A web page served by the printer should open. Does it?

    Hi,
To connect, I need to 'configure encryption as AES', which I'm not sure how to do on OS X. Furthermore, after signing in with my college ID I am required to 'Use the domain name [domain name]' and 'configure your browser to use the college proxy servers [example.example.net] on port [123]
The encryption should be configured automatically. To use the proxy:
    1. Open System Preferences
    2. Click on Network
    3. Select Airport from the list on the left
    4. Click on Advanced, near the bottom right
    5. One of the tabs will be called Proxy. Configure your settings there.

  • Settings to connect to office windows network using wifi

    Hi there,
I'm trying to connect my MacBook to the office network using Wifi - it's a full windows network with the usual active directory, fileservers and exchange. I can connect using LAN and can get to the network folders and exchanges etc, But I can't work out what settings need to be changed on the Wifi adapter to go wireless. Had a try searching for the answer but no luck.
I've tried setting up a new user on the Mac with the same name as my network login. Attempted to change the DNS settings to be the network IP and changed the workgroup name under the WINS tab (although that seems to always change back to WORKGROUP automatically). And of course use my network password when asked for a WEP password when trying to connect. It doesn't ask for a username when connecting to the network wifi - just a WEP password.
Can anyone explain what settings I need to change on the Macs Wifi adapter?
And what details will need from my PC to get it going e.g. IP address, workgroup etc.
Not much of a clue with networking. So please speak slowly!
    Thanks for the help,
    Mike

All you should need is to verify that the correct IP ports - 3283 and 5900, primarily - are open on any applicable routers, and if necessary forwarded to the internal IP address of the Mac mini. Then just set up the Remote Management settings (Sharing system preference) on the Mini and add the mini to the Computers list in ARD.
    Regards.

  • Can't connect Mac to Windows network drive

I am the only Mac in a PC college. I frequently have to connect to shared folders on the PC network. For six months I could "connect to server... cifs://name" with no problems. Last month, this suddenly stopped working (error = server may not exist). My office IT people told me to switch to smb://name and it worked again for at least a day. Now I can't get it to connect at all. The finder can see the PC server in the shared pane, but it won't connect to it. "Connect to server" won't connect either, no matter how I try. I get the "server may not exist" error, the "volume won't mount" error, or the "not all data is readable" error. The local IT people say they haven't changed anything and all the Windows people are fine. As the lone Mac user, I don't think much help is forthcoming from IT here. I don't know much about this sort of thing, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.
I do not know if the problem coincides with the update to 10.5.6 or not.

    Karen –
Unfortunately I think that 10.5.6 broke several aspects of MS Windows support. If you were to GOOGLE ‘can’t connect to windows shares with os x 10.5.6’ you will find plenty. I personally have not upgraded to 10.5.6 because of it. Though not the best method you may want to consider using the IP address of the system you are connecting to.
    smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/<share name>
Obviously I know that this is easier than said especially if you are the only Mac on the network, I am sure the College IT group is just going to fall on their swords to help you with this or even providing you this information. With that said you may be able to get the IP by trying to ‘PING’ the server’s name. To do this open a Terminal session on your Mac and type the following at the prompt:
    ping <server name>
You should get a something like this:
    PING <server name> (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx): 56 data bytes
Now let me caution you, I am sure that the college has turned of PING reply on their network you will most likely get the line above and that is it. Also depending how aggressively they monitor their network for such activities you may show up on some report. Given that I would suggest that if possible you find someone in the IT group that is somewhat sympathetic to your problem and let them know what you are attempting to do.
Not the best answer but I know that using the IP instead of the server name seems to work.
    Best of luck.

  • Connect macbook to windows network

Trying to connect a workmate's macbook to MS SBSSRV 2008... absolutely no joy...

NO NEED TO SHOUT!! lol Caps lock is next to the A key.
It should work regardless. To connect to a server when connected to wi fi, from the top menu choose go->connect to server (or keyboard shortcut: Command-K)
Type in the share's IP address you want to access (or its hostname; IP address is way easier when testing).
When prompted for username and password, either enter your network username andf password.
If its wi fi you cant connect to, reboot the router and try again. or TRY TAKING CAPS LOCK OFF BEFORE YOU ENTER YOUR PASSWORD!

  • Connecting Macbook to windows network

I am trying to make my macbook join my dads network as he wants to backup to my 500gb WD My Book Harddrive. I can access all of his shared files on his desktop, his laptop and my moms laptop. They however do not even see my computer in the network. What is the problem here? Is it possible that they are just not going to it right. I hope you can help you, thank you.

I've never been able to "see" my MB from our Windows computers. Under "Windows Sharing", I have AFP and SMB selected. Due to the warning when FTP is selected, I haven't checked that box. I also see the following line...
Other users can access your computer at afp://10.0.1.196/ or browse for "MacBook".
I've tried putting afp://10.0.1.196/ in a Windows computer without any luck also.
So, I've generally given up on sharing files between computers and if I need something on another computer, I "flash drive" it. However, it would be nice to be able to share.

*HELLO I WILL USE BOLD BELOW TO MAKE MY COMMENTS*
OK you will have to some simple things.
    1. Find a third party time Time Server that you can use both on your Mac and Windows 7. I say this because of both modern sharing systems use kerberos. If you don't want to do that (or don't know how) just make sure both the you Mac and the Windows 7 machine are set to get their Time Clock updates automatically from an internet Time sever.
*BOTH COMPUTERS ARE ON THE AUTOMATICALLY INTERNET SERVER*
    2. Read the article File Sharing: Win 7 and Snow Leopard: Introduction.
*READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE AND DID EVERY SINGLE STEP AND WHEN I INPUT THE IP ADRESS I CLICK CONNECT AND IT DOES NOT CONNECT, SAME DIALOG BOX SAYING. EVERYONE ELSE IN MY OFFICE IS USING WINDOS AND CAN CONNECT WITH NO PROBLEM*
    3. If you want to use the Finder toolbar Network pane automatically then read the Apple discussion Snow Leopard 10.6.4 not showing Windows 7 Machines on Finder's Shared.
*I DID FOLLOW ALL THE STEPS LISTED HERE WITH THE SAME RESULT. I CANT CONNECT.*
With this information you shouldn't have trouble sharing files with a Windows 7 machine.

  • Connecting to a Windows Network with Cisco AnyConnect

Okay so I am beyond stumped here and hope you can help. So I am able to connect to my companies VPN using Cisco AnyConnect with no problem. The network admin can see me in, and I can even access Web based resources. My problem comes when I am trying to ping the domain controller and our DNS server and cannot. In addition when I go to use RDC to connect to our Terminal Server no love.
No for the very weird part. When I do a traceroute to the TS server by name I am getting DNS resolution. So it appears that I am able to hit the DNS server, but not able to ping it for some reason. I have tried everything I can think of short of binding my computer to the network. Any ideas are very welcomed!!!!
    Thank you all in advance,
    Mike

I am assuming that the windows and Mac appear on the same subnet of your local LAN?
If the PC's are having difficulty finding the Mac and the Mac has a static IP, I would add that listing to your local "hosts" file, the entry would go below your local IP found in that file such as:
    127.0.0.1
192.168.1.5 maciscool (where maciscool=NETBIOS name you entered in the Advanced section of Network under WINS), and/or under "Sharing" at the top box entitled "Computer Name:", if it doesn't work with maciscool.local, try removing the ".local" from the computer name. Older versions of whenders had difficulty with upper/lower case machine names, if it is currently lower case, make it UPPERcase.
The local hosts file used to be found under c:\window\system32\drivers\etc, have no ideal where they hid it under Vista but probably the same place.
Windows should search local "hosts" file before going to WINS, before going to DNS, since you most likely don't have a Windows domain with a WINS server it won't look there and of course it won't find computers on your local LAN via DNS, so by adding those to your local hosts it acts as a mini DNS server to resolve machine names and addresses.
