Connection to server on port 25 timed out

Can't send mail. Connection to the server "smtp.ca.astound.net" on port 25 timed out.
I keep getting this error when sending mail. I can receive mail but just can't send.
I noticed this problem sometime after installing the Security Update 2006-005, Security Update 2006-007 and Airport Firmware Update 5.7. I don't know that any of these are the cause but I'm trying to provide as much detail surrounding the problem as I can. I had been receiving and sending mail with no problem for the several years that I've had this set up and now I can't send mail.
I am using a 17" Powerbook running OS 10.3.9 and connecting wirelessly to an Airport Extreme. I'm using Apple Mail as my email software, but I have also tried to send through Entourage with no luck. I am using an email account and SMTP server provided by my ISP. I also have an old iMac running 10.3.5 that is wired directly to the Airport. I have an email account set up on the iMac and can't send from there either.
My ISP (Astound), who handles the cable modem, has said that they haven't made any recent changes on their side and confirmed with me that my account settings are correct. I even deleted my account and rebuilt it with no success. Although I am able to send email through webmail using my ISP's website. Based on that test they say that there aren't any problems on their side.
Are there some settings on the airport that may be affecting this? Any ideas on what I'm missing? I'm baffled.
PowerBook G4 17in, 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.
It could very well be that the problems are related to having installed a system update, usually not because of the update itself, but rather as a result of not having installed it properly, or having ignored Apple’s "Important: Please read before installing" warnings, etc.
Some (but not all) of the problems caused by not having installed an update properly can be fixed by (properly) reinstalling it. If you suspect a particular update could have a bearing on this, proceed as follows.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. In some cases, it may also be necessary or convenient to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Yosemite Mail Connections to the server on the default ports timed out.

I have upgraded two machines to Yosemite and I am having huge problems with Mail. It works perfectly well with my .mac mail but it does not work with my xServer running OS X server 10.6.something. I have little triangles but the mail account and I get the message "Connections to the server “mailgate.cp-lighting.co.uk” on the default ports timed out."
Any machine running an older version of OS X has no problems connecting.
The machine running Yosemite all have the same problems, they all have the triangle, they all receive mail but if you read it or delete it, it re-appears as unread so I can receive 20 emails read then delete 6 and a few minutes later I have 20 unread emails again.
Worse mail in the outbox get stuck behind a queue so it takes ages to send any mail, if I look at activity viewer I can see processes constantly running "Moving Messages" , "Synchronizing Sent", "Updating Cache directory"[sent] , "changing flags" and finally "Updating Cache directory"[Inbox]
If I go to mail and preferences/accounts I cannot edit the incoming mail server it is greyed out. I wanted to change the domain nane for the ip address of the server to see if that made any difference but it is not possible. I don't understand what Apple have done it is a nightmare.
Is anyone else having these problems?

Yes, my husband has had this problem too with his IMAP email account. He is temporarily using Thunderbird, which is working better, but it is also reporting lost connections. Seems the issue is deeper within the networking or security services of Yosemite than the Mail app itself.

  • Connection on default ports timed out

I administer an xserve that up until 3 days ago was sending and receiving email fine. After a user went over quota I adjusted their quota to allow them to remove emails as they were unable to modify any email at all. In the process of adjusting their quota I have broken something and now get "Connection on default ports timed out" error.
I am able to send using webmail but unable to receive from an external source
I have posted my post configuration below and would appreciate any help.

    unknownlocal_recipient_rejectcode = 550

    It's not surprising.
    Your configuration includes:
    inet_interfaces = localhost
This tells postfix to listen on localhost only. i.e. it won't listen on the network interfaces and accept mail from remote clients.
There may be other issues with the configuration, too, but that's the first one to fix.

  • I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do?

I can't connect to Wi-Fi - keeps timing out. No problem connecting from other laptops / phones. Stopped working after I did a system upgrade. What can I do? I am on OS X Yosemite.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
    Step 1
Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

    Hello all,
I have a server application running on a linux server and am timing out after about 15 minutes. I do not know how to make this server program run indefinately. It is an application that listens for clients and responds appropriately. Any ideas?

  • Iphone 5 Screen is Frozen Connection Timeout Error Connection to this app has timed out

I upgraded to IOS 7 just a few hours before my Iphone 5 screen froze and I cannot make changes -  I have a Connection Timeout Error with Connection to this app has timed out.  With Ok in blue.  The screen doesn't respond,  I can turn off the phone, tap OK or do anthing.  Any advice on how I can reset or fix?

Check for any anti-virus or anti-spyware software you might have. Temporarily disable that to continue. Normally this is what will cause a timeout. I assume you have a good Internet connection?

some times my internet connection will say it has timed out and I can not connect. but my friends mac never has a problem. How can I fix this?

Just confirming, when you have the trouble, the wifi icon is grayed-out or has all bars showing? I believe you are saying that is is grayed-out - not connected to your wireless router.
I have a Mini that started to lose connection to the Internet after the 10.7.3 update but still showed the wireless as connected. If I pinged the wireless router, I would get a quarter of the packets failing to return. The router was a Netgear that supported 802.11N connections. As a test, I set it to 802.11G (54MBps) maximum and the Mini worked fine for a week - no dropouts. And for the other devices that did support 802.11N, while there was a noticeable delay with downloads and pages loading, they still worked.
As another test, I changed the Netgear router to a Billion 802.11N model and the Mini has not had a problems since. (It is still using 802.11g). So it could be your router that is causing trouble for your Mac.
Have a look at some of the More Like This postings in the right column. There has been a number of Mac owners experiencing wifi connection issues and some very good suggestions as to how to resolve their issue.

  • Can't sent mail. connection to server on port 25 timed out.

Can't send mail. Connection to the server on port 25 timed out. I keep getting this error when sending mail. I can receive mail but just can't send.
When I connect directly to the cable modem, thus removing the Airport from the set up, the mail sends fine. I recently updated the Airport with firmware update 5.7 and I'm wondering if there are some settings on the airport that may be affecting this? Any ideas on what I'm missing? I'm baffled.

I tried changing the MTU on the iMac which is wired directly to the airport.(I have an old iMac running 10.3.5 and a Powerbook G4- the G4 connects wirelessly to the airport) I changed it to 1492 but didn't still wasn't able to send mail. I feel like I'm stabbing in the dark with this, is there a way to determine what the packet size should be?
MTU will vary with connection type. Cable and non-PPPoE, can use up to 1500, whereas PPPoE connections (WinPoet, RASPPPOE, Enternet, etc.) can only use up to 1492. For secure VPN connections (i.e., IPSec) use a MTU value less than 1500.
The best value for MTU is that value just before the packets get fragmented. To test, use the Ping utility.
    OS X: ping -D -s 1472 www.dslreports.com
    WinXP: ping -f -l 1472 www.dslreports.com
Reduce 1472 by 10 until you no longer get the “packet needs to be fragmented” error message. Then increase by 1 until you are 1 less from getting the same error message. Add 28 more to this (since your ping packet size, not including IP/ICMP header is 28 bytes). This will be your MaxMTU. (Note: If you can ping thru at 1472, stop, you’re done! Add 28 and your MaxMTU is 1500.)
    Some typical MTU values:
1500: The biggest sized IP packet that can normally traverse the Internet without getting fragmented. Typical MTU for non PPPoE, non VPN connections.
1492: The MaxMTU recommended for Internet PPPoE implementations.
1472: The maximum ping data payload before fragmentation errors are received on non-PPPoE, non-VPN connections.
1464: The maximum ping data payload before fragmentation errors are received when using PPPoE connected machine.
1460: TCP Data size (MSS) when MTU is 1500 and not using PPPoE.
1452: TCP Data size (MSS) when MTU is 1492 and using PPPoE.
1400: MaxMTU for PPTP Tunneling VPN (Win2K/WinXP).
576: Typically recommended as the MTU for dialup type applications...leaving 536 bytes of TCP data.

  • I cannot acess some of my emails. Thunderbird keeps saying "connection to SMTP server (email adress) timed out. What does that mean? What do I do please?

I purchased 2 new email, adresses a few weeks ago. Both were fine but a few days ago I was stopped sending and stopped receiving emails on the one. The message comes up on my screen "connection to SMTP server (followed by my email adress) timed out. That does not mean a thing to me. What should I do please?

    Thankyou.
I had been asked by ICANN some days ago to do something but I thought it was a scam so ignored it. Most other users I have spoken to have never heard of ICANN or been asked to 'register' with them or whatever. Anyway, post writing to you I have now 'registered' with them . When I now click on my incoming email adress it just says "failed to connect to server" but why it fails I do not know.

  • Mobile Hotspot Says I'm connected to internet, but websites timing out

Hello, I just got mobile hotspot for my Thunderbolt. I am connecting to the network and it is saying I have internet access, however when I try and load a website they are timing out.
To make matters stranger, my computer is showing recieving and sending packets, and I had a youtube vdeo half loaded, and it streamed the rest. But when I click on new websites it is saying connection timed out.
    All help is appreciated thanks!

This has happened to me in the past. I've seen a few others report similar issues. I'll assume you've already tried the standard solutions (reboot, battery pull, reseat the SIM card).
Have you tried connecting to the hotspot with another computer? Have you tried a direct USB connection rather than a WiFi connection?
For me, the solution was to turn off Auto Sync before using the hotspot feature (Menu -> Settings -> Accounts and Sync, and then uncheck Auto Sync). Don't know why this worked, but it did.
If the above doesn't work for you, it could be a network-related issue. To test this, try the following:
Can you ping sites from your computer when the browsing ability is down?
If no, then it sounds like a DNS issue. In this case, try accessing a website by using its IP address rather than its domain name. For example, 206.112.186.66 is the IP address of lowes.com. If you can access a site via the IP address but not via the domain name, then it's a DNS problem. Call VZW tech support to report it. Use different DNS servers (e.g., Open DNS) in the meantime.
If you can still ping sites, then it's not a DNS issue. So, next, try using a proxy server--such as proxify.com--to access the web.  If the the proxy server works, then you should call VZW support to report the problem, since it's clearly an issue on their end with specific sites.
When calling into support, let me forewarn you: Give yourself an hour or more for them to walk you through the usual steps (reboot, battery pull, reseat the SIM card). Also, if they assign you a trouble ticket, don't expect to be called back within the promised 48 hours (it's more like 2+ weeks). Instead, you have to be assertive and keep calling them back.

  • Connection not completed because it timed out???

I've never had any problems with iChat or AIM for Mac. I just got to college, however, and while the wireless internet works fine, every time I "log on" to iChat, it takes about 30 seconds of nothing, then a message pops up that says...
"Connection could not be completed because it timed out."
Does anyone know what that means or how to fix it???
    Thanks!

    Hi,
In a College situation dropping the Login in port to 443 is below the NAT threshold of 1024.
Port below this number are open as standard in most devices.
The other ports iChat uses can not be changed so if a router or modem does have the ports blocked you get limited Text chatting.
It should not cause problems in Video chatting in other set ups.
However the ports ichat uses do need to be allowed in some manner in your routing device.
