Controlling Photo Quality in iPhoto Calendars and Books..

As is the case with many of the processes in iPhoto, I am unclear as to what is taking place when I place and order with Apple for a Photo Book or Calendar. I use an 8 MP Olympus DSLR and shoot at max resolution so my average image is 3200x2400 and # MB+. And yet when I place an order for a calendar containing 12 full page images shot at that resolution the down upload time is nowhere near as long as you would expect for a file that size. I have also noticed that the images in the calendar appear to be of lower quality than when printed out on an ink jet printer. Does iPhoto export the photos at full resolution, or is there something taking place here behind the scenes to speed up upload times?

Is there a loss of quality when the photos are converted to pdf files? If so, is there any way around this? I am trying to maintain as high a quality as possible.

IPhoto calendar and book font issue

On or near Nov. 30th, 2009, I launched iPhoto 8.1 to produce a calendar. The upgrade option came up and I proceeded to do the installation.
I attempted to upgrade to iPhoto 8.1.1 on a new 2.66 GHz Quad Mac Pro running OS 10.6.2. Install did not work the first time.
I then launched iPhoto to produce a new calendar. Prior attempts have not had any font issue.
When selecting my favourite font, Kon Tiki, a different font appears. When selecting that new font, yet another font appears. This continues indefinitely.
This issue also occurs when creating new books. Existing books and calendars in my Keepsakes retain their original font but I do not want to test if they change until this is resolved.
I tried reinstalling original application from Time Machine but error continues. I then tried a second successful time to install the upgrade to iPhoto 8.1.1
I have since tested this on my 3.06 GHz iMac running OS 10.6.2. This system had already been upgraded to iPhoto 8.1.1 but no calendars or books had been produced since the upgrade.
The same issues occur.
2.0 GHz MacBook running iPhoto 8.1 does not have this issue.

I ran Font Book and Validated all fonts. Cleaned up quite a bit but did not resolve the issue. Fonts are no longer as randomly selected (Kozuka Gothic Pro now selects Kon Tiki Kona consistently) but does show the secondary font choice of the font above it. Current version on Mac Pro seems to corrupt the iPhoto Library. Accessing those iPhoto Libraries from different computer (2.0 GHz iMac running iPhoto 8.1 resolves the issue and reinstates selected fonts).
Second issue now occurring where previously created Calendars are becoming Books on Mac Pro system. I have tried removing all iPhoto files and reinstalling from iLife '09 disc then upgrading to 8.1 but error still occurs.
How do you remove all iPhoto files and where are they. I can either reinstall them from iLife '09 disc (again) or copy them from MacBook system where they appear to be working.
I'm not completely able to locate all iPhoto files it seems.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you now using? What versions did you have previously?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto opens?
are the calendars in the left hand pane?
what fixes have you tried?
where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

Albums are strictly logical things and only exist in the iPhoto database
To edit photos in PS you need to set PS as the external editor for iPhoto in the iPhoto preferences - edit the photos and Save it (Not save as) so it will be returned to the iPhoto library and the iPhoto database files updates correctly

Quality of iPhoto Calendars

I just received 3 calendars I ordered through iPhoto and am aghast at the print quality, in particular the color. Has anyone else encountered the same problem? Is this due to high volume during the holiday rush?
I ordered 7 calendars last year without any problems, except for one that was misaligned and was eventually resent.

Apple uses the sRGB profile for it's products and if you were to have the Adobe RRB profile that could cause muddy, darker photos. If the printers are set up for the Adobe profile I understand you can get better prints. But many providers are not. Many camera's RGB profile are very similar to the sRGB when compared with the ColorSync application and print up just fine by Apple. I don't know enough about the nuances of color management and the digital printing to be any more specific.
However, here is what Apple sent me in response to a request about material quality in books:
I contacted Apple and asked for information that I could pass on. Here's the reply I received from Apple:
"Thank you for contacting the Apple Print Products Customer Service.
I understand that you would like to know the printing process that is used and the color mode the files should be in, so you can better advise users in the iPhoto forum.
iPhoto version 4 or later, allows you to import and print files through the Apple Print Product service as RGB, grayscale, or CMYK color space. JPEG files with RGB color space are recommended for best results.
While iPhoto 2 can import files of various formats, including RGB color, grayscale, and CMYK, this version requires JPEG files with RGB color space when printing photos and books.

For what it's worth here are some of the technical specifications for the books, cards, and calendars. I hope this gives you an idea about their quality and form.
BOOKS
All iPhoto books are printed using acid-free paper for long-lasting image quality. The photos are printed at a high resolution (300DPI if you use iPhoto 6). There is no external modification--such as sharpening or contrast adjustment--of the photos; what you see in the application is what is printed in the book.
Hardcovers Books
The cover is hard-bound and covered in linen. You select the linen color during the book-ordering process. The hardcover books have a solid, stiff binding that is glued and crimped. The internal pages, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches, are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock.
Softcover Books
The softcover books come in three sizes:
- Large 8.5 x 11 inches
- Medium 6 x 8 inches
- Small 2.6 x 3.5 inches
All of the softcover books have internal pages that are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock. The large softcover book has a white cover (Kromekoteplus Folding Cover, 16 point) with a cutout on the front that reveals the cover-page photo in the book. The covers for the medium and small softcover books have the cover image and title printed directly on the cover. All of the softcover books have a glued binding and feature a thick cover of McCoy 100# Cover Gloss paper stock.
CARDS

I have to agree with kam973 in that the problem is associated with a particular printing facility. Something got out of whack for some of the runs I'm guessing.

Creation of Calendars and Books not possible

i cannot create calendars or books with iphoto '08. cards do work. there are no themes or pictures shown in the window. what shall i do?

To creat a new DC in shared repository do the following:
1. Create a DC in the local repository
2. Go to manage models, click on the newly created DC and you would see the icon with blue + (tooltip: Add to the source control)
3. Your local DC is now your shared DC

Calendar and Book not working

Please help. After selecting some pics (or an album or event), I click on Book and get the "Choose type" window, but none of the listed choices are available. Clicking on Calendar doesn't do anything at all, while clicking on Card works just fine. What's wrong?
I have all the latest versions installed. Removing com.apple.iphoto.plist in Prefs won't help. I have checked the Themes folder in Application Support and there are 298 theme files there. I've done a fresh re-install of iPhoto as I was having printing problems but that is OK now. Any ideas / suggestions would be much appreciated, as I'd love to have the hardcopy pics available ASAP.

The themes for the books and calendars have been deleted some how. Go to the HD/Library/Application/iPhoto and check the Themes folder. If it's empty move it to the desktop, delete the iPhoto application and any file with iPhoto in it that resides in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Then reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on. Run the latest update, 7.1 and repair permissions. That will bring back your book and calendar capability. I just finished doing the same thing.
Remember to remove the Themes folder first even if empty.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

How do I control storage location for iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie

My primary drive is getting full and I note that my User file has all of the iPhoto images, iDVD projects and iMovie projects. I want to take these collections off the main drive and place them on one of my external hard drives to open up space on my primary drive (the one with the Applications, etc.) How do I control where my images and movies are filed when I use the above applications? I do not recall designating any save function to this folder or drive. How can I save these files in a location on my external drives in tthe future? If I move these images and movies from my User file, will that cause a problem for iPhoto or iMovie or iDVD in finding the files in the future as I use these applications?

They are using three different concepts - VERY UNLIKE APPLE to do like this !
• iPhoto saves in a iPhoto library and there can be more than one - using the alt-key during up-start let's You to select which one You want to use and on Main Hard Disk at Root level in Photo folder.
• iDVD - Save an iDVD Project file (sort of folder) where You want to find it.
• iMovie - saves Event's and Project's in iMovie Event's resp Project's folders AND ONE MUST NOT alter or move anything in them or location of them - Moving Event's and Project's MUST BE DONE inside the iMovie Application !
So while one can move iMovie Event's and Project's to another Mac - the needed Photos (and audio from iTunes) will be missing and very hard to get iMovie on second Mac to find and recognice.

How do you make photos vertical in iPhoto calendar?

When making a calendar in iPhoto, and you choose 6 or 7 photos to be displayed on that month, how do you make the 4 little photos vertical?

You can't change the frame. But you can Control-click on the photos and select Fit Photo to Frame Size and it will reduce the size of the photo so the entire portrait photo will display in the frame. The excess background will be the same color of the page's background.

How to Arrange Photos on an iPhoto calendar--Customize? Reconfigure?

When making a calendar, is it possible to customize the layout of the photo (top) pages? (As you can do on book in Aperture?) For example, create multiple photo boxes laid out in a custom pattern?
As to the pre-determined layouts, how can I reconfigure them? For example, for a page with three photos, one long one and two regular sized, how can I cause the long picture to be, say, across the top v. on the left side v. on the right side v. along the bottom?

Basically - No
iPhoto is much less simpler and less flexible than Aperture
In books sometimes the order you place the photos makes a difference in how the layout adjusts to them - sometimes it does not - but in general the layout is the layout

I cannot find my photo's on iphoto's and I did not delete them where could they be?

I was transferring photo's from a camera to my Mac and now I cannot find any of my photo's that were in my Iphoto's libary, I did not delete them, where else could they be? Or can they be recovered if they have been trashed?

First, don't try to find and reimport or move photos via the My Photos search in the left hand pane of a Finder window. That's a sure way to further damage a library.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
