Convert 24fps to 30fps (non-interlaced)?

I need to convert a 24fps .mov to 30fps in AE.  I was wondering if you could suggest the best way for me to do so.
I tried a '3:4 pulldown' at render time, but that results in interlacing.  Andrew Kramer's FPS converter script didn't seem to work for me in CS5 either.
thank you for any recommendations provided.

Can't be done in a single pass unless you want to just change the frame rate which would change the total length of the video.
Adding 3:2 pulldown can only be achieved through interlacing. You could then, on a second render seperate the fields. The resulting footage would have a regular pattern of soft frames where two fields, each from a different frame, are blended together into a new single frame. The amount of the bluring depends on the motion withing the frame. The video would not look as goos and ad standard 3:2 interlaced video from a 24 fps source.
Interestingly enough this brings up an interesting debate on film look and fps. When we were producing commercials for large ad agencies on 35mm film I always ran the camera at 29.97 frames per second and never at 24 because the resulting commercials just looked better. Sure, the broadcast video was still interlaced, but both fields were identical so we were really creating 3Op footage. It also sill looked like film because, well, it was film.
The biggest question that your question brings up in my mind is why would you need to or want to do this? I can't figure out why 3:2 pulldown video would be unacceptable.

  • Non-interlaced Graphics and NTSC output

I have animations created at NTSC D1 720x486, 30fps, non interlaced.
I convert them to 720x480, 29.97 fps and export as Lossless QT via AE.
I then compress them using Compressor 90min preset, drop them into DVDSP and burin a disc.
    Encode options:
    Field Order: auto
    Mode: Two Pass
    bit rate 5.0
    max 6.0
    motion estimation: Best
I get crawl. I tried applying lower field dominance via AE and replacing the clips in DVDSP and it looked worse.
What do I need to do to make non-interlaced animation play smoothly and look on a tv the way it looks now on my desktop?
Is the answer(s) in Compressor? AE? DVDSP?
I tried a search before posting but I didn't find an answer.

I get crawl. I tried applying lower field dominance via
AE and replacing the clips in DVDSP and it looked worse.
Second thing first: unless you are working on a 24p comp in AE, you should be exporting with lower field dominance. In fact, if you work in 24p in AE, you would still pick lower field dominant but then pick a pulldown pattern to apply as well.
So when you say you get "crawl" (i.e. it looks like a moving marquee around borders), then that's a function of using overly-saturated colors in your animations. You won't see the crawl until you view it on a TV. You'll see worse crawl when viewing it via composite or (ick) RF-modulated connections. You won't see it as much, or at all, on S-video or component connections, but anyone else viewing it via composite or RF will still see it.
The only solution is to use AE's Broadcast Safe filter, or run things through Final Cut and use its broadcast safe filters along with its range check view.
The other possibility is that what you're seeing isn't actually crawl. So you might need to describe the problem you're seeing in more detail if that's not the case.

  • Non-Interlaced DV

    Hi!
Can you confirm that FCE HD 3.0 does not support non-interlaced DV video for rendered material but anything that does not require rendering will remain in it's native non-interlaced format?
What appens if I import and render (after an operation) non-interlaced DV video in FCE HD 3.0?
    Thanks!

Yes, FCE always renders interlaced, but it depends what you do; it not matter.

  • Converting from finished products non-batch to batch management

    Hi guys,
Can you tell what is the best strategy to convert a system from non-batch managed to batch managed for the finished and salable product? Batch management should have been implemented from the start, but my client just realized that mistake. This is knowing that we already have inventory and all kinds of transactional data: purchase orders, sales order, production orders...
I am looking for the less painfull strategy, as detailed as possible.
    Thank you.
    Fotso

    Its going to be painful.............
    1) Reverse all material stocks. Create a new cost center and consume the available stocks to that cost center using 201 mvt type.
    2) If there are any open sale orders for that material delete the line item in those sale orders.
    3) Update the batch management indicator in the material master.
    4) Add back the material in the respective sale orders.
    5) Post the stocks with batches by reversal mvt type 202 from the cost center.

    HI Subu ,
there is some information gap , what is your source ? are there any transformation in between ?
If its SQL server source and destination and the datatype is as you have mentioned I dont think you should be getting such errors ... to be sure check advance properties of your source and check metada of your source columns
just check simple oledb source as
    SELECT TOP 1 ItemCode = cast('111' as nvarchar(50)),DivisionCode = cast('222' AS nvarchar(50)), Salesplan = cast(3.3 As float) FROM sys.sysobjects
and destination as you mentioned ... it should work ...
somewher in your package the source columns metadata is not right .. and you need to convert it or fix the source.
    Hope that helps

  • How to edit with non-interlaced playback - for square pixel art?

I'm working with PNG sequenced images from Flash. I'm compositing in AE and I export an QT movie in "Animation" compression, 100% quality. The exported movie is as 'clean' as a Flash swf. This becomes my source movie for Premiere CS3.
When I bring my scenes to edit in Premiere CS3 I can't figure how to set up the project so the the final out-put is non-interlaced. I want the quality of the final movies to be as clean (non-interlaced) as my source movies.
I would like to work in non-DV format since my source movies are made from square pixel art (Flash & Photoshop). This process works great in Premiere 5.1, is it possible in CS3?
I work on PC - XPpro

    Jim,
Thank you for responding to my post. My question is can I edit and output in Non-DV format (non-interlaced video) with CS3?
I mentioned using Flash because I wanted it to be known I was starting with square pixel art. My final goal is to make DVD movie. I use Premiere to edit the scenes. I work in animation, some traditional hand drawn, painted in Photoshop, and some Flash generated. My end results needs to be a high resolution QT movie.
I've been using Premiere 5.1 and for years (Premiere 4 before that). I would like use Premiere CS3, but I need to export without the interlaced video. Can this be done in Premiere CS3?

  • SSIS Package : While Extracting Sharepoint Lookup column, getting error 'Cannnot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types'

    Hello,
I am working on one project and there is need to extract Sharepoint list data and import them to SQL Server table. I have few lookup columns in the list.
Steps in my Data Flow :
    Sharepoint List Source
    Derived Column
    its formula : SUBSTRING([BusinessUnit],FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1)+1,LEN([BusinessUnit])-FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1))
    Data Conversion
    OLE DB Destination
But I am getting the error of not converting between unicode and non-unicode string data types.
I am not sure what I am missing here.
In Data Conversion, what should be the Data Type for the Look up column?
    Please suggest here.
    Thank you,
    Mittal.

You have a data conversion transformation.  Now, in the destination are you assigning the results of the derived column transformation or the data conversion transformation.  To avoid this error you need use the data conversion output.
You can eliminate the need for the data conversion with the following in the derived column (creating a new column):
    (DT_STR,100,1252)(SUBSTRING([BusinessUnit],FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1)+1,LEN([BusinessUnit])-FINDSTRING([BusinessUnit],"#",1)))
The 100 is the length and 1252 is the code page (I almost always use 1252) for interpreting the string.

I have a flat file that i want to import the contents onto a SQL database.
I created a Dataflow task, source file and oledb destination.
I am getting the folliwung error -
"column "A" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types"
in the origin file the data type is coming as string[DT_STR] and in the destination object it is coming as "Unicode string [DT_WSTR]"
I used a data conversion object in between, dosent works very well
    Please help what to do

    I see this often.
Right Click on FlatFileSource --> Show Advanced Editor --> 'Input and Output Properties' tab --> Expand 'Flat File Source Output' --> Expand 'Output Columns' --> Select your field and set the datatype to DT_WSTR.
Let me know if you still have issues.

  • Column cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types

I am converting SSIS jobs from SQL Server 2005 running on a Windows 2003 server to 2008R2 running on a Windows 2008 server.  I have a dataflow with an OLE DB Source which is selecting from an Oracle view.  This of course worked fine in
2005.   This OLE DB Source will not even read the data from Oracle without the error "Column "UWI" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode.  The select is:
    SELECT SOME_VIEW.UWI AS UWI,
                 CAST(SOME_VIEW.OIL_NET AS NUMERIC(9,8)) AS OIL_NET
    FROM SOME_SCHEMA.SOME_VIEW
WHERE OIL_NET IS NOT NULL AND UWI IS NOT NULL
    ORDER BY UWI
When I do "Show Advanced Editor" on this component, in the Input and Output Properties, I show the OLE DB External Column as DT_STR length 40 for the UWI column and for the Output Columns I see the UWI as the same DT_STR.
How can I get past this?  I have tried doing a cast...cast(SOME_VIEW.UWI AS VARCHAR(40)) AS UWI and this gives the same error.  The column in Oracle is a varchar2(40).
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Please check the data type for UWI using advanced editor for Oledb Source under
external columns and output columns. Are the data types same?
If not, try changing the data type (underoutput columns) same as data type shown under
    external columns

  • Cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.

I'm trying to copy the data from 21 tables in a SQL 2005 database to a MS Access database using SSIS. Before converting the SQL database from 2000 to 2005 we had this process set up as a DTS package that ran every month for years with no problem.  The only way I can get it to work now is to delete all of the tables from the Access DB and have SSIS create new tables each time. But when I try to create an SSIS package using the SSIS Import and Export Wizard to copy the SQL 2005 data to the same tables that SSIS itself created in Access I get the "cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types" error message. The first few columns I hit this problem on were created by SSIS as the Memo datatype in Access and when I changed them to Text in Access they started to work. The column I'm stuck on now is defined as Text in the SQL 2005 DB and in Access, but it still gives me the "cannot convert" error.

I was getting same error while tranfering data from SQL 2005 to Excel , but using following method i was able to tranfer data. Hopefully it may also help you.
    1) Using Data Conversion transformation
data types you need to select is DT_WSTR (unicode in terms of SQL: 2005)
    2) derived coloumn transformation
expression you need to use is :
(DT_WSTR, 20) (note : 20 can be replace by your character size)
    Note:
Above teo method create replica of your esting coloumn (default name will be copy of <coloumn name>).
while mapping data do not map actual coloumn to the destination but select the coloumn that were created by any of above data transformer (replicated coloumn).

You should check that the Project settings match the clip settings before editing them to the Timeline.
Only newly created Projects will change not existing ones by adjusting the Project settings.
If, for example, you have a Project set to NTSC DV you can only end up in trouble if the clips are PAL 1920 x 1080i.

  • How best to convert 24fps to 60fps?

I would like to know the process to interpolate frames in a video recorded at 24fps to make it 60fps.Could anyone help me?

You question begs a question from me. Do you understand frame rates? Why do you want to do that and what do expect to happen? Last question, what kind of 24fps footage do you have?
Let's talk about kinds of 24 fps footage. First, there's real 24 fps footage, then there's 23.976 fps footage which was really 29.976 (ntsc) video which was recorded interlaced (59.97 fields per second) but has had 3:2 pulldown added which you typically get from a little older video camera with a 24fps option, then there is film originally shot at 24 fps but transferred to video using 3:2 pulldown.
Let's talk about 60 fps as a playback format. First, if you video is ever going to hit television of cable then there is no such thing. Everything in NTSC land is 29.97 fps then interpreted as 23.976 and it's all interlaced. What that means is that if you send progressive footage to a broadcaster you get interlaced footage back but it looks progressive because you have pairs of identical fields. If you live in PAL land you get other options. If you are talking playback on the internet via YouTube or vimeo, the standard is still 29.97, 25, 23.976 or 60P if the receiving client has 60p equipement.
If you truly have 24 fps footage with each frame a unique slice in time then when you "convert" that footage to 60 fps there are only two options. The first option is to just play back the footage at 60 fps which means 10 seconds on the clock will playback in 4 seconds so the motion will be sped up. 240 frames divided by 60 = 4.
The second option is that you keep the playback time the same for your 10 second clip by playing back some of the frames more than once. You can either do that by adding a pull down scheme or using time remapping or a plug-in like Twixtor to take the pixels in 2 frames and calculate their new position in the frame based on their projected movement. For example, let's say frame 1 has a rotating pointer that is vertical and pointed straight up and in frame 2 the pointer is horizontal and pointed to the right. If you were converting to 48fps instead of 60 then you would need a new frame between 1 and 2 with the pointer pointed up and to the right at 45º. This is very difficult for software to do with 100% accuracy, especially if there is a lot going on in the scene.
The only other scenario that I can imagine is that you have some true 60 fps footage that you want to use in the same project as your 24 fps footage. If that is the case, then the option I would pursue would be to create my project at 30 fps and use the 60 fps footage in that project and also import the 24 fps footage into the same project. If you have 60 fps footage that is really 60i or 60p then the frame rate is 59.97fps anyway and you could treat the footage as 29.97 with no degradation in quality or frame blending, then you would either re-render your 24 fps footage as 29.97 fps interlaced with 3:2 pull down added or just use it in your comp with frame blending added or use Twixtor to convert the footage to 29.97...
So I guess we need to know exactly what kind of footage you have and what you are trying to do and what you are expecting to accomplish before we can give you a process that will solve the problem.
