Convert .MXF Video files to work with Mac Editing software?

Hello,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Trying to find software that will edit .MXF Video Files to work with Mac.
As the edit is simple, prefer iMovie, but happy if the Conversion software only works with FCExpress (or even FCPro if that is the only alternative).
1. If it matters, .MXF (Material Exchange Format) Video files came from shooting on a Panasonic 500 P2. Originally downloaded onto a Windows system, using Adobe Premiere.
2. I just want to see and convert some of the shots I did for my Reel, etc., but I have a Mac.
3. I have iMovie HD, iMovie 09, and FCExpress (which I don't know how to use that well).
4. When I attach an External HD with backup files of all the footage shot, they show up named as .MXF files. They appear as VLC files (VLC icon), but the suffix is .MXF.
5. When I try to play them as VLC files, they won't play. It seems they start to play, but then the VLC software quits.
6. So I have tried downloading some software on the Internet that Google says converts .MXF files.
I tried: iSkysoft Video Converter, AVCWare Mac Video Converter, MPEG Streamclip, and a couple others. They all seem to have basically the same conversion setups, but when I click to pick one .MXF file, none of them recognize it. (The file in my Browse window is greyed out).
7. MoyaVideo Converter for Mac recognizes the .MXF file, but when I hit the "conversion" button - I tried a couple different settings, all it seems to convert is the first frame. Even if the .MXF file says a clip is 123MB or 43 seconds long, etc.
8. I can't even watch the clip in Preview. Press Play and it is just the first frame.
9. I have read elsewhere in these forums, some people touting conversion software from a company in Germany - mfxformac. I am fine with paying for conversion software, but $500?
Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for your response.
If this codec can only be read by Final Cut Pro, why do all these companies claim their software can convert .MXF files?

  • Converting a flash video file to work with in FCE

Does anyone know how to grab a flash video file off the web and convert it to a format that can be edited in FCE 2.0.3? Thanks

Generally Flash video is streamed off a server and is not downloadable as some QuickTime files are.

  • Which HD video file formats work with Mountain Lion?

I use Final Cut Pro v. 7.0.3 and want to work with HD video. Have tried to open some HD video files and have not been able to. Are there specific HD file types that Can be used with this older system?

I've googled the camera for info and I think it should work in FCP7.0.3
Connect it to your Mac with the USB cable and switch it on.
In the FCP menu select File>Log and Transfer
A window will open and all the clips in your camera should start to appear.
Select the ones you want and click the pause symbol on the lower, centre part of the window to start the capture.

  • What video files are compatible with mac?

I am trying to download videos and movies, which file formats are compatible with mac?

Some types of AVIs and all protected WMA and WMV files aren't. If the component needed to open a movie isn't clear, the free MPEG Streamclip will reveal what it is or if it's possible at all.

  • A UPS model that works with Mac Native software to do a graceful shutdown and automatic restart during a power failure.

I've tried 3 UPS's (2 APC and one TripLite) that state they are OSX compatible, however, they do not fully respond to the native osx setting in (system Preferences/ Energy Saver/ UPS/Start up automatically after a power failure). This is what happens:
During a power outage, the OS does a graceful shutdown, but does not reboot when power is restored.
Apparently, the UPS is not notified to turn off during the shut down process. The power (on-Off-On) cycle is required by the mac to restart.
Trip lite tech support says they have software that works with Windows and linux to do this, but not mac.
I've tried two older APC UPS's, One Smart UPS1500 and a Back-UPS 1500 with the same result on two different servers and one iMac.
At this point I'm looking for a make and model of a UPS that does work. If anyone can verify a make and model that actually does this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Its a simple test, just pull the plug on your UPS, wait for the system to shut down, and then plug the UPS back in. The system should reboot.

Many of the CyberPower UPS units are compatible. Checkout the home solutions on this page: http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems.html

  • Video Cameras that work with Mac software...

I am a new Mac user (3 months and still learning) and My wife is a photo freak. She is wanting to get a new camcorder and start editing some of the footage she gets. Which camcorders out there have people had success with on the Mac??? We currently have a low end Sony that will not work. It does not have a USB connection and burns footage to miniCDs. We're looking for something that we can plug in and get to editing. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Any DV or HDV camera will work (writes to MinDV casettes and has a firewire port for DV video transfer). Prices range from about $175 to $6000.
Other than that, cameras that record MPEG4 and can be accessed as USB mass storage devices will work too. With those, you are sacrificing quality of the video for the speed of transfer to the computer (DV and HDV transfer 1 minute of video in 1 minute). With MPEG4 video, the data has already been compressed and encoded with some quality loss.
There are also DVD/MPEG2 recording cameras. These have very similar properties to the MPEG4 ones but require additional software on the Mac, and, if mini-DVD, require an external DVD drive.
Personally, for home video I use a Canon ZR100 -- very small and simple camera. Quite basic, but I get pretty decent results (particularly outdoors). I'd prefer a nice 3-CCD model but that just wasn't in the budget at the time (maybe soon).

  • Open MXF video file in QT7

I have set every MXF video file to open with the SONY XDCAM tool. I need to write a script that will open an MXF file in QT7. I cant get it to work. This code still opens the file in the XDCAM app.
    tell application "Finder"
    set x to selection
    set y to item 1 of x
tell application "QuickTime Player 7" to open y
    end tell

Assuming "QuickTime Player 7.app" is located in the Utilities folder, the following should do the trick:
*set theApp to POSIX file "/Applications/Utilities/QuickTime Player 7.app"*
    *tell application "Finder"*
    *   set x to selection*
    *   set y to item 1 of x*
    *   open y using theApp*

I recently purchased Wondershare software. I've converted many video files and made a movie. imovie quitting. Wondering if there is a problem with Wondershare and imac compatibility. Any thoughts?

Not sure about the codec- Wondershare asked where I was sending to in setup and I selected imovie. It did the rest. I have been successful with editing on storyboard, but imovie (09) quits when I attempt to view project full screen, or prepare the movie for sharing. I have removed some files (to ensure headroom), and have installed most recent updates.

does anyone have any idea ?
    Thanks in advence ...

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
    For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip  into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.
    Good luck.

  • Which is the best software to convert the video files for itouch?

I got a 3rd gen itouch. Is there any software that helps to convert the video files. so I can sync those files to my itouch. " Handbrake " used to work pretty good. but now i still can convert the video files to m4v format but itunes doesn't allow me to put those files in. Please Help!

You may have different menu options than Half bit Bit Ah. The support page on how to do it is at https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1497. In part it says:
If you did not purchase videos from the iTunes Store, they are may not be in a format that you can play on your iPhone/iPod. In many cases, you can convert them to the correct format using iTunes or QuickTime.
    * Using iTunes: Select a video and choose Advanced > Create iPod or iPhone Version
    * Using Mac OS X v10.6: Open the video in QuickTime Player and choose Share > iTunes and then select the iPhone & iPod option.
    Hope that helps!

  • Download and convert Youtube video to MP3---Just with one click

Download and convert Youtube video to MP3---Just with one click
Last week, when wandering around the Youtube watch.com, I was enthralled with the theme song of "Lost", especially the words of the song "I found out, on the corner of first and amistad, where the west was all but won all weeklong, smoking his last cigarette, I said: "Where you been?" He said: "ask anything.""......"
I couldn’t help expecting to save this song to my personal players. What a delightful thing listening to the song while walking or waiting for a bus! Okay, do you have the same experience as me? When hearing an exciting speech or dialogue, are you thirsty for downloading them and saving as your best memory?
Download, convert Youtube to mp3?—yes, you can.
Anna, one of my best friends, has posed a question "I have a Mac notebook and I only need the audio (mp3 music) of a certain Youtube movie, what shall I do?" The solution to the problem is shown as below:
Step one: Install a Youtube Converter for Mac as follows:
Step two: import the URL of Youtube video (or batches of URL) you wanna convert using "Add URL" icon. Select output format like audio (MP3) by "Settings" and customize your output file path with "Browse".
Step three: If you want your output audio much better, you can set the audio resolution like Bit Rate, Channels or Sample Rate presented in the following picture.
Step four: Click "Ok” button, it automatically download and convert your youtube videos simultaneously. After a few minutes, you can get the desirable audio (mp3) you want and enjoy it on any portable devices.
Download, convert Youtube videos to iPod, iPhone, iPhone 3Gs, PSP, Creative Zen, Zune, iRiver, and etc. --- done by one click.
Generally, if you want to download a Youtube video and then convert them to MP3 for your mobile devices, you need two Youtube tools: Youtube Downloader and Youtube Converter. But, now, with Pavtube Youtube Converter for Mac, you can both download and convert massive videos by clicking one "Ok" button.
Now, all the best, you can enjoy versatile Youtube music at a waiting room, on a bus, traveling, walking around the park or lying on your bed..

Youtube's ToU specifically state that downloads of any content is prohibited unless there is a download button available for a particular video.

  • My ipod somehow converted my video files to music files...

Ok, I know it sounds strange, but it happened. I buy weekly episodes of South Park and The Office from iTunes so I have a video to watch while on break at work. The other day I went to watch Season 3 of The Office and the episodes have all vanished!
I looked around the iPod and found that all the videos on my iPod are missing, not just The Office. However, after looking a little more, I found all these videos in the MUSIC section of the iPod!!!
The videos no longer play with an image, they just play the sound, if even that. I'm on a new computer (I sold the old one) and don't have access to any of these files, so I can't simply reload them onto the iPod.
My question is this: since my iPod randomly converted my video files to audio files on the iPod itself, is it possible to edit them back to video?
I have two other friends who've had this same exact problem. If I can't fix it, should iTunes be responsible for replacing my missing videos? Its obviously a hardware glitch.

Your ipod did not convert them to audio files. That's impossible. If you no longer have the files on your computer, you will have to copy all your music and videos from the ipod, to your new computer and into itunes. Once you have done this, you will then be able to restore your ipod and resync all your files to the ipod.
I assume you have all ready tried restarting your ipod?

  • How can I get avi files to work with imovie08?

Hi I bought a macbook last year and have loved creating imovie videos by simply using the video function on my digital camera. My daughter was born last year and we have a great collection of clips of her first 7 months. I'd now like to take things a step further and put together a wedding video.
We had our wedding day filmed on a digital camcorder by a friend and he has given my 25MB of avi files which I would like to import into imovie and make into a video however I understand that this format isn't compatible. Is there a way of getting it to work and if so please can you tell me in very simple terms what I need to do to get the files to work with imovie? (I'm not very technical)
    Thanks
    Matt

I do not know of a way to import .avi files directly into iMovie, and I am positive that this is not actually possible as iMovie only supports the importation of .mov, .mp4 (mpeg4) and .dv filetypes.
What you could do is use a video converter (there are some good ones that are availible free, eg MPEG Streamclip (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html)) to convert those avi movie files to either of the 3 video formats iMovie supports, then import them.
MPEG Streamclip does sound a little complicated for you but it is the best I have found, any more questions just post them here.

  • Is there a program that converts Quicktime video files into Media Player?

Is there a program that converts Quicktime video files into Media Player video files?
      Windows XP

Windows Media Player on a PC plays avi and mpg in addition to the WMV and ASF files so you can either use a Windows program that generates those files from .mov format or you can use QT Pro to convert the .mov to uncompressed avi and then use Windows Media Encoder to make WMV files. Although it may be out there no one here has mentioned a PC program that converts directly from .mov format to WMV. There is a program for Mac OS that does it and I believe that company is working on a version for Intel Macs so it wouldn't be much of a stretch for them to port it to Windows.

iPhone 5 doesn't work with Mac OS 10.5.8 - do I need to ugrade to 10.6 and then upgrade to Mountain Lion or can I just upgrade to Mtn Lion right away?

At least to 10.6.8. You must do this to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
