Convert RAW in JPEG

I've migrated all my old iPhoto library into the new Foto app.
I've tons of RAW files that would like to convert into JPEG saving space.
Which is the best tool to do that (are GB of photo) ? Any chance to have conversion directly within the new Foto app ?

That is not possible with any non-destructive editing photo manager - Photos (as to photo and Aperture and Lightroom and others) record edits and apply against the original when you view them or export them - the original exactly as imported is always saved
If you want a JPEG rather than a RAW then set your camera to shoot JPEG only

  • How do i convert raw to jpeg in aperture

How do I convert raw to jpeg in Aperture 3 ?

I find all this rather strange! I often convert RAW to Jpeg if I want to keep an image for reference but it doesn't merit or require the 8 to 10MB of the RAW file (on my computer, my external drive, or anywhere else). For example, I take photos of artefacts in museums, and I also photograph the labels/legends beside them, for reference. I can keep those solely as quite small Jpegs since I'm never going to want to print them.
(No, I don't want to switch settings on the camera while I do this - I'll only forget to switch back, and then have loads of low-res Jpegs that were meant to be glorious RAW).
In other software I've used, there's a batch convert that makes this very simple. Seems that in Aperture I'm obliged to export and then re-import. Not a big deal, but a slight pain in the arse all the same, and a little odd.
Anyway, thanks to the above posts, I now know how to do the export-import malarkey. I couldn't find it in the manual.
    cheers,

  • Convert RAW to jpeg

    Hello,
I'm using Aperture to organize my photos and have been shooting in RAW. I'd say that out of 100 pics, I might take advantage of the RAW format to edit 5 of them. I'm new to photography and during the learning process have taken a lot of pics of, for example, my dog that I really don't need in RAW format but don't want to delete altogether. I intend to continue shooting in RAW, but would like to convert my older pics to JPEG as I've filled up my external hard drive that my library is kept on (I'm using a 2006 core duo macbook). I know the usual advice is "never convert raw to jpeg to save space, just buy a new hard drive," but I really don't need 500+ pics of my dog in RAW format, jpeg will be 100% fine, and don't want to shell out the money for a new hard drive right now (although eventually I will.)
My question is: is there a way to selectively convert my photos or even entire projects from RAW to jpeg and maintain the organization structure? I know I can export to JPEG, but then I have to re-import and re-organize them all, correct? Either way, I then have to go through and delete the RAW versions, right?
    Thanks,
    John

I have a desktop PC with 4 internal drives that I'm backing up my images to over my wireless network on a (somewhat) regular basis, so if/when the external does crash, i've got the images backed up. The problem is that I've only got a 60Gb in the laptop, and a 320Gb external that is partitioned to allot 90Gb for time machine and the rest shared between music and photos, which has filled up pretty quickly. I'm looking into a 1TB external for the future, but I really like my 320 western digital as it is USB powered and really great for on-the-go. Maybe I'll think about a smaller library on the 320 and the permanent library on the 1TB. In the meantime, I need to free up some space on the external one way or another.
    Thanks,
    John

  • When converting RAW to Jpegs in Batch converstion, I'm getting 2 copies of everyone.  Why??

When converting RAW to Jpegs in Batch converstion, I'm getting 2 copies of everything.  Why??

Oops, so you did. I must have been on auto-pilot
I don't have any of those tracks in my library so I can't tell you that any of them work for me. If Genius works overall then it's probably a matter of sampling a critical mass of playlists that already contain those songs, for it then to be able to suggest suitable "mixes". I've not tried to get to grips with the mechanism behind Genius but I'd guess it works something along these lines. Your library gets inspected and some kind of summary gets uploaded to a server which integrates data from lots of users, and then gives you some back. Perhaps the process just does take time.

  • Converting RAW to JPEG without exporting

    Hi all
I mostly shoot in RAW to gain the extra flexibility this offers during post.
Once I have finished editing the RAW images in LR3, I would like to convert them to JPEG to save disk space. Is there an easy way of doing this? I currently export the JPEGs, delete the RAW images, then re-importing the JPEGs into Lightroom.
    Many thanks

    Hi gib1983,
I can only second what dj_paige advised !
There are opportunities when you scout your images for entirely different purposes: my most sad recent example is a good friend, died suddenly. Among our last meetings was the wedding of mutual friends, for whom I had prepared a photo book. When you deliver such to a happy couple you look for different things than when you try to find the pictures you have of your deceased friend - trying to compile something to help his parents and sisters a tiny bit. Scouting the "raw material" was a real source, especially for different crops using virtual copies.
I find that I rarely use jpgs now, apart from temporarily while creating photo books.
Even printing is convenient out of LR directly from the raws. Or use the print module to "print to jpg", but this time with a template that includes a caption for each image, leveraging what you entered as meta data. In former times I had done prints and hand-written such caption-info on the back - the typical content of the *shoe box archives*...
My friends also appreciate a pdf-format from slideshow to share images with them for viewing on screen - again captions included.
But full-sized jpgs is the rarest use case for me now. I just get them when scanning shoe-box-content for real archiving, but I would never do with them for my own shots.
BTW I convert my proprietary raw-formats (NEF, CR2) to DNG and embed xmp-data and LR previews into them - to be on the safe side for future compatibility.

  • Possible to convert Raw to JPEG without exporting and importing?

I have about 4,500 raw photos that I need to print on contact sheets (or print contact sheets to a PDF). I took the photos all in Raw format. Aperture, or my computer, is not powerful enough to process all of these photos onto contact sheets from the Print Images menu item; it takes several hours. I suspect I need to convert the files to a low-quality JPEG and print the contact sheets from those, which should be fine because the thumbnails are so small.
Here's the question: I know that I can create JPEGs from these raw files by exporting as JPEG and then reimporting them into Aperture, but this seems overly complicated. Is there a way I can select a number of photos within Aperture, and then select to convert them to JPEG of a particular quality, without leaving the application? Or are the multiple steps - exporting and importing - necessary?
Next time I'm shooting Raw+JPEG to avoid this, by the way...

So my workaround actually worked. I exported the photos as low-quality JPEGs, reimported them into a new project, and processed a Contact Sheet off of those. To process a Contact Sheet with the raw files would have taken Aperture about 12 hours or so. To process a Contact Sheet using the low-quality JPEGs took about 10 minutes. I'm glad this worked, though I wish there were a way in Aperture to create JPEGs from the raw files without leaving the application.

  • Convert RAW to JPEG in iPhoto

    Good afternoon,
I'm attempting to clear hard drive space and realized I have 2,000+ photos in RAW format in my iPhoto library. Is there a way that I can convert all of these to JPEGs within iPhoto 9 and delete the RAW files without having to reorganize them back into events and such? I've changed the way I manage my photos these days - these are all quite old so I don't mind losing the RAW. Plus I have them backed up on my Time Machine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any responses.
    Best,
    Taylor

    No
For iphoto to work it must have the original (in your case the RAW)
If that is not what you want then you should not shoot RAW - or you should not use iPhoto (or maybe both)
And if you think that haveing them backedup on Time Machine is an archive you are in for a nasty surprise - Time Machine is a backup system which keeps a limited amount of historical data (amount is detern=mined by available disk space) and then delete the oldest data - it is not an archive system
There are progrtams out there that claim to be able to do this - DO NOT USE THEM if you care about your photos - there is no way to do what you want if you use iPhoto
You can run iPhoto with th elibrary on an extrnal hard drive  --
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
You can also keep a smaller version of the library on your internal drive and use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -   to move photos between the two libraries

  • Iphoto is converting raw to jpeg!

ok, so i always import from my Canon Rebel XT raw files into iphoto 8. i use iphoto to organize my "negatives" and photoshop to edit. i have never had problems dragging raw files from iphoto into photoshop [in the dock], until recently. the problem is this:
i drag the file into photoshop and it opens as a jpeg.
and i realize that iphoto rotates the portraits and coverts them into jpegs and that to open them in the photoshop camera raw editor i need to convert them to the original raw settings before doing so. it is the same for both portrait and landscape orientation. they both open as jpegs.
i am able to right click on the thumbnail in iphoto and click Show File, and then drag that raw file from the finder into photoshop and have it open as a raw file in the editor, as it should. which should tell me this isn't a photoshop [cs3] problem, no? iphoto has been like this for a while now for me. probably since the last update?
i had an efficient little workflow mojo and now it's a hassle! i hope there is a fix for this. can anyone shed any light?

    korpuskrispy:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
NOTE: If you set iPhoto to edit the RAW file with PS then it must be saved to the desktop and imported as a new file. It can't be saved like you would when editing the jpg version with PS.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Converting RAW to JPEG

I have used Photoshop Elements 8 for years to process the digital pictures I've taken with my Cannon EOS. I normally shot pictures in RAW. Then once I make the changes through Photoshop, I save them in a JPeg format. I've done this for years. But recently when I do this, I can no longer save as Jpeg. The Jpeg simply does not show up on the options for save.
Why? Do I need to update my Photoshop 8? Do I need to buy and install later version?
    Please let me know.
    Thank you

That looks like your image is in 16 bits mode.
In the editor, use the menu 'Image / mode' and see if the option '8 bits mode' is available. If it is, select it to convert to 8 bits. Jpeg format does not support 16 bits mode.
To avoid this, when in the camera raw dialog, look at the dropdown menu in the middle of the bottom bar : select the 8 bits option to transfer the raw file to the editor.

  • Why does my converted raw to jpeg image have an arrow pointing to it?

When I have taken a raw image through the camera raw edit and then to full edit in elements 10 and then post the converted image onto my desk top to then move elsewhere why does it show up with an arrow pointing to the image and why am I unable to use it unless I send it to iphoto first? See screen shot of photo of woman with arrow pointing to it.  What does this mean?

Presumably you have a desktop folder or desktop pictures folder. Go directly to the folder containing the jpeg.
You can set-up Elements as your external editor in iPhoto settings.

  • How do I convert Raw to Jpeg with Elements 9?

I just installed Elements 9. I set my camera Panasonic G2 to Raw and Standard and could not find the Raw with Elements open, I could only find them in the DCIM folder and send them to My Documents. There has to be an easier way.
My other question, after I made some adjustments in Raw, I wanted to convert and save them in Jpeg to do further adjustments in PSE.  There doesn't seem be to be this option to do that. I have Silkypix, which works fine, but would prefer to do everything with the same software.Raw was the main reason I bought PSE 9.

  • Converting RAW to JPEG= tiny JEPGs

    Hi-
I'm using aperture 3 and I'm exporting CR2 RAW files to JPEG, but once they've been exported they are tiny (for example, a 12.39MG RAW image becomes only 700K as a JPEG. I'm using the setting for JPEG- Original size.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Sarah

So what? Does it look the way you want it to? JPEG's are supposed to be tiny they use lossy compression and are only 8bit color.
Now on to the parameters - all of those export settings are just presets - you can use them as is, change them, or make your own. Yours may have been accidentally adjusted to make smaller files or not but you can check if you want and change the settings if you like.
While the preset is selected, say JPEG original size (original does not mean file size it means pixel dimensions) use the drop down to choose edit... - in the dialog that comes up you will see all of the settings - pixel dimensions, quality setting (no giant need to go higher than 6 or 8 - higher just makes bigger files with not much if any visual difference), color profile etc. etc.

  • How to convert raw to jpeg in aperture???

I am new to this and cannot figure out how to save it in Jpeg

When you export an image, you select a file format such as JPG (and much else besides). Until you export raw images, you should keep them raw, as that allows you to retain much more data, and gives you much more latitude in changes you can make to the image.

I am new to this so I am not sure what the file size is since I'm not resizing it.
The question asked about exported image size (height and width) in pixels, not file size. Your operating system can tell you, or if you import the exported image into Lightroom, then Lightroom can tell you in the Metadata Panel, set the dropdown to EXIF.
I am printing a 5x7. I know I have tried to print with long edge set at 1024 and set to 300 ppi and had the same result with the grainy ness.
If the exported file has a long edge of 1024, then you did resize the image, there no other way to turn a RAW in to a JPG with long edge 1024. In any event, 1024 pixels is probably not large enough to fill 7 inches, that's really 1024/7=146 pixels per inch (rounded-off), and could be the cause of the "graininess" that you see, although I would use the word "pixelization" to describe what you see. So I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing, but let's go with it for now.
The solution depends on your answer to the original question, and probably depends on a clarification of how you got the image to 1024 on the long edge even though you claim you didn't resize it.

  • Hidden file when converting from raw to jpeg. How to delete this?

I just found out that when converting raw into jpeg in Photoshop there is a hidden file enclosed starting with ._ Computers don't see them but televisions do. I discovered this because I want to show a batch of my images on a television with a usb of a sd card. It shows my images and after each normal image I get a black image with a questionmark. It says 'cannot read this file' and it shows the name of the image but with a ._ in front of it. For instance garden.jpg and then -_garden.jpg. Computers don't read images starting with ._ but televisions seem to do so. I want to delete these ._ images because I cannot show a slide show of my images on a television. Anyone can help? It seems that this hidden file is incorporated into the jpeg file.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I have thought of this solution but these files are not showing when I set it this way. I had a specialist helping me to find this problem and he was very surprised that these hidden files didn't show up in his special program for showing hidden information. Only when going deeper and deeper into this program these files showed on his computer. As they are incorporated into the original file (the jpeg version) you don't seem to be able to delete them. What do people do when they want to show (jpeg converted from raw)images on their tv?
I have a Mac if that helps.
