Converting Movie for iPod

So, I have an .MPG file that i want to work on an ipod... but when i do the whole Advanced > Convert Selection for iPod thing which turns it in to an .MP4 file... the sound of the movie goes away.
Is there a way to fix it so it doesnt... or is there another MPG > MP4 editor out there?

If you need help first you'll need to explain a few more things. What version of QuickTime do you have installed? QuickTime 7.0.3 (which adds export to iPod feature) or QuickTime 7.0.4?
I've heard some people had problems with upgrading to QuickTime 7.0.4 - namely they lose their Pro functionality. Also what version of Mac OS X are you running is it Panther (10.3.9) or 10.4 Tiger? How old is your Mac? Is it one of the Intel based Macs released at MacWorld '06 or an older PowerPC based one?
Also what version of iTunes are you running? (This is important) iTunes 6 and higher requires QT 7.0.3 for best video playback. Videos I convert to iPod format using QT's export movie to iPod feature end up in .m4v format (the format of videos sold in iTunes) but mine are unencrypted - no FairPlay DRM.
I am converting my own videos to the iPod's format. .mp4 is another format the iPod can use. If you have ffmpegX (Google it) can convert video to iPod video or iPod TV format.
My videos exported to iPod format in QT 7.0.3 were originally in .AVI format.
Export to iPod (320X240) format = .m4v (MPEG 4 Video)
They work just fine and I have a Mac PowerBook G4 from winter 2003 with OS X Panther (10.3.9) + QuickTime 7.0.3 + iTunes 6.0.2

  • Converting Movies for iPod: No Sound

Whenever I convert a movie for my iPod, there is no sound in the converted file. The original movie has sound, but it is in a form that you can't put on iPod.
By the way, I am using the Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone under the Advanced menu.
    Any ideas??

Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos; more information on this issue is available in this article.

  • Converted movie for ipod but no sound!!!

I’ve finally converted all my music videos to apples “.mov” format since they work great in itunes. However for some reason several videos will not transfer to the ipod as itunes says they will not play. The videos that seem to be working were converted to m4p before converted to .mov. I had no idea an apple file (.mov) wouldn’t work on an apple device (ipod), whatever. So I used the “Convert Selection for iPod” for a movie that wouldn’t work. After a freaking long time, 15-20min for a 4min video, it converted it but of course, there’s NO SOUND. Try and figure that one out. BTW, has anyone ever had their question answered on these forums?

  • Convert Movie for iPod-sound disappeared

I tried to convert a video for iPod by using "Advanced/Convert Selection to iPod". After it's converted, the sound is gone. Any idea why? Also, the video quality is bad when I view it in iPod, anyway I can adjust it? Thanks!!

If the videos are multiplexed MPEG files then the audio and the video are muxed onto the same track. QuickTime, and therefore any application that uses QT like iTunes, the iPod, iMovie (Mac app), etc. expect two separate tracks, one video and one audio. So when you play these muxed files, the video is played and the audio is not heard.
iPod plays video but not audio of some exported files
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302588
So you need to do a conversion on the file first. MPEG Streamclip is a popular one that comes in both Mac and Windows versions and is known to "repair" this problem.
See this other link for other applications that might be able to do the same thing. But your root cause is the muxed MPEG files.

  • Chapters lost when converting movies for ipod

I have some video with chapters that when I convert them to ipod version the chapters are gone. Any reason for this?

I can't think of a reason this would happen, but I here is how to put the chapter marks back in (granted it takes a little work).

  • Convert Movie for iPod

From a DV tape, I used iMovie HD6 to develop a movie for my grandson. One output would be a file for his iPod. In doing this from HD6, the result was 320x240 and not 640x360 as with iMovie 08 and 09. Any thoughts on how to make a iPod compatible movie that is 640x360?

Best way to do this is to use "Expert Settings" in the "Share" menu, then change the size accordingly, this could have an adverse effect depending on the aspect ratio of the original video

  • Converting movies for iPod

Here is the source of my problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1946609&tstart=0
My problem with iTunes is that I cannot get any DVD ripped to make an mp4 that works on my iPod. I use to be able to use Handbrake to convert some of my DVDs to watch in the car or while I was not at home. But now I cannot seem to add any movie made from Handbrake onto my iPod and inorder to do so I have to convert selection to iPhone/iPod. I would rather not do this because it takes such a long time to run. I guess this is a bit more of a developer question, but how come iTunes takes such a long time to convert a movie? I ran a test on this once and found iTunes took 20 minutes or more than VisualHub to convert a 5 minute movie.

    Bump?

  • 'Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone' makes my movies silent. Why?

When I choose the 'Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone' option so that I can put my movies on my iPod, all of the audio becomes silent. The picture is fine and only the music/words go away.
Why? And, if there's a way, how can I fix it?
(These movies are either from a camera or from friends.... 'mpg' files.)

Thanks for the reply, but iTunes did not create a new file. I looked in Movies and in TV Shows, and in Music just to be careful, but there is still only one file, the one that doesn't play on my iPhone. I even looked in my iTunes Music folder for a file it may have created an just not imported, but there is nothing there either.

  • "Convert Selection for iPod" Command Increases File Size?

    Hello!
I'm trying to convert a file that has the following characteristics (as reported in Quicktime Pro):
    Format: H.264 Decoder, 496 x 208, Millions, AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
    FPS: 25
    Data Size: 572.20 MB
    Data Rate: 659.18 kbits/sec
    Normal Size: 496 x 208
I know the dimensions are strange, but it's because this is just a test I'm running on a workflow using Hand Brake to bring content back from a DVD (my content).
Now, when I drop just the original file into iTunes and then try to put it on an iPod, it says it can't be played. So I use the handy new option in the Advanced menu, "Convert Selection for iPod." This yields a new file with the following characteristics:
    Format: AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz, H.264 Decoder, 640 x 268, Millions
    FPS: 25
    Data Size: 1.36GB
    Data Rate: 1609.01 kbits/sec
    Normal Size: 640 x 268
How is it that the data rate and file size have increased so much? It now plays on an iPod, but why? I was under the impression that usually the problem with getting video to play on an iPod was a data rate that is too high. So it seems strange to me that the second file works and the first doesn't.
Finally, what is the difference between a file with the extension .mov and the extension .m4v? The original file has .mov and the converted ends up with .m4v. But they have the same characteristics in terms of codec. So what's the difference?
Thanks for any help and info!
    Cameron

I think I was able to resolve this myself after some trial and error. It looks like it is all in the name of the file. I've gotten some files to transfer after going into the Get Info section and updating the name (usually shorten the name or take out non-letter/number/# characters and then get the filename on disk to match.

  • "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone" and Leopard Issues

I have a number of movies on my hard drive which I would like to convert for my iPhone, so I right click on them in iTunes and select "Convert Selection for iPod/iPhone." Since I upgraded to Leopard, this function has been taking an extremely long time, about 12 hours for a half hour clip. Versus when I was running Tiger, it would take about 1.5 hours. Is there a way to either fix this or allocate more resources to make my computer work faster?

Thanks for the reply, but iTunes did not create a new file. I looked in Movies and in TV Shows, and in Music just to be careful, but there is still only one file, the one that doesn't play on my iPhone. I even looked in my iTunes Music folder for a file it may have created an just not imported, but there is nothing there either.

  • Convert Video for IPOD

    Please someone help!
I've added a "xx.mpg" file in itunes, then right click and choose "Convert Selection for iPod". Another file with same name is then created. I copy the new converted file to my iPod, however, there's only image but no sound. Can anyone tell me why and what video format can play in iPod.

The iPod and iTunes cannot play back that type of file.
The file must meet the following specifications to play correctly.
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    -or-
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats.
When you use the convert option does it create another file with the same file extension?
    What is this video?

  • Convert video for ipod error

Recently iTunes has stopped converting videos for me. When I right click and choose 'Convert selection for ipod' I now get "Error occured while converting 'file name'. The required file cannot be found."
The file uploads into the library and plays great. This has just started happening in the last week or so, before then it worked fine. I am saving the original files as Quicktime MOV files and in the same location as they were being saved before.

    Hi mvlys and all,
firstly, I assume you mean to suggest changing the preferences under the pull-down menu Edit => Preferences and then activate the Register Card "Advanced" and change the "iTunes Music folder location" to the default at installation.
I have never changed this and do not allow iTunes to move any media to the default directory, so there is nothing to change on my installation.
The message displayed in the pop-up says: "The required file cannot be found". This sounds more like iTunes was expecting to find some file belonging to iTunes at some specific location, but cannot. Which file is however not mentioned.
Is this forum being monitored by Apple?
Can we expect them to pick up on this error.

  • Converting videos for ipod

i have converted videos in the past and it works, but now i have .mpg files (itunes lists them as quicktime movies) but when i click on the option that says convert selection for ipod, when they convert they have no sound. So i tried to convert them with compressor, but it wont let me select files that end in .mpg

Convert your mpegs with iSquint instead of iTunes, then import them into your iTunes library/iPod and they should play perfectly. Good luck.

  • Movies for ipod

I have a movie in itunes on my imac i wanted to put on my ipod touch. I encoded the movie for apple tv originally. I tries to just sync the movie to my ipod touch but itunes told me it could not be played on the touch. I am converting the movie over for ipod using itunes but it seems to take for ever. Is this normal and should i have had to convert the movie for ipod in the first place?

appletv support 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps

if you convert to ipod in the first place it will not look very good on your appletv

  • No sound when converting movies to ipod in itunes

Ever since i received my ipod i was having problems converting my movies to ipod format. It takes a few hours to convert and then when its done i get no sound (movies are currently on my computer just not ipod ready.) I've made sure i have the latest version of itunes. Other than that i couldnt find any trouble shooting tips. I also tried converting using Quicktime pro. That was just a complete waste of time. It says it converts in about 4 seconds, when i go to open the file its just a snapshot of my computer screen instead my movie. (i go into export, pick the file, then select movie to ipod. also tried movie to mp4) Any ideas on what to do?!?!

QuickTime expects video files with separate video and audio tracks, but many MPEG formats used a muxed (multiplexed) single track that contains both. Therefore, iTunes & the iPod (both of which use QuickTime) only show the video and no sound.
iPod plays video but not audio of some exported files

One way to work around this is to use MPEG Streamclip to convert the files to fix this issue...
