Converting movie library from DV to Mpeg

I have a number of DV imports in my iMovie 08 library, but they take up such a huge amount of HD space. Is there an easy way to convert these to mpeg and keep them in my library without having to add them to a project, export them and then reimport them?
Thanks,
Scott

If you are done creating your project in iMovie, the normal procedure is to archive and/or remove the raw footage from your hard drive and keep the project output files for viewing/sharing. iMovie is not intended to be a a video manager or multimedia player like iTunes, the QT Player, or Front Row.
As to actually converting your files to MPEG-2, You can simply use iDVD or Ti Toast to create Video_TS Folders/image files which can be left stored on your hard drive but this limits you to applications like Front Row, the Apple DVD Player, VLC, MPEG Streamclip or similar applications for playback. Programs like bitVice or Compressor can be used to create elementary MPEG-2 and AIFF streams playable in QT (if you have the MPEG-2 component installed) or other multimedia players. My own personal choice would be to use iTunes to manage the default H.264/AAC files produced by iMovie '08 for viewing in iTunes, Front Row, QT Player, iPhone, iPod, TV, and can also be shared on-line giving you the most options for viewing and sharing.

consider usage of a diff. editor.. iMovieHD6, you're entitled for a free downlaod at apple.com:

but IF you're relaxed, opened your mind, follow the bright light, ommmm.. for Events & Stuff:
your intended workflow will add another step of quality-degradition (8mm>>avi>>mp4>>iM08) ..
consider the free tool Mpeg Streamclip www.squared5.com for 'chopping' that 90min beast into pieces..
rename these new chunks, follow advice given on my site:

  • How do I delete itunes library and move library from old windows machine to

My daughter bought a new macbook and would like to move her itunes library from the windows machine to the mac. I copied it to the mac and moved the existing itunes folder to the trash. By the way, she got 3 free downloads from Apple and they were in the library I moved to the trash bin. I then moved the backup folder to the location of the itunes folder I had deleted. When I open itunes, it sees the 3 songs in the deleted folder. How do I get itunes to recognoze the new itunes folder?

Thank you. As I understand it, if the original iTunes folder had never been populated, we would have been able to move the library exported from Windows into iTunes and preserve the playlists. Because my daughter downloaded 3 songs she does not even like, we have no way of preserving playlists? There must be some way to remove all connections to the first library. Is it possible remove the iTunes application and then either re-install it from the original disks or else download it. I know you can download iTunes for Windows, not sure if it is there for Macs. My guess is that if she starts itunes from scratch, there would be no references to the intial DB and we could then move in the folder from Windows without a problem.

  • How to batch convert entire library from raw to jpeg

I would like to know if it is possible to convert my entire iphoto library from mostly raw to jpeg and save as different library. The reason for this is ATV2 will only stream  8gigs at a time and it is annoying and inconvienent to go upstairs to change the selected album settings in itunes when viewing a different group of albums (my library is mostly raw files and tops out at about 300gigs. If entire library is selected ATV2 diisplays the library titles no problem but if attempting to view one it displays the loading gear wheel forever on the screen. I'm sure if I can convert the whole thing to jpeg and preserve the directory structure this will solve the problem as it will be  a much smaller file.
Thanks is advance for any thoughts on this.

File -> Export and select Jpeg as the format. Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events. You can then import that to an iPhoto Library.

  • Move library from desktop to laptop

Trying to move iTunes library from desktop to new laptop so I can sync to my new ITouch

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your second computer is to network it with the first one and copy your iTunes folder across. Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the first computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the second computer.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • Converting my Library from one Mac to a new one

Is there some tutorial that explains how I can get my iTunes Library from an iMac to a new MacBook Pro? My iMac has a CD-burning drive, not a DVD one, so I need a better option.
Can I go from my iMac to an external hard drive, and then from the hard drive to the new MacBook Pro? I was under the impression I had to go to some sort of physical media (CD/DVD) but some people are saying that I can actually use an external hard drive be the 'go-between' here.
My iMac has 10.4.11 (Tiger) but my new MacBook will have Snow Leopard most likely once I buy it. Do I need to have the exact same OS on my iMac as I do on the MacBook in order for this to work, or is that a non-issue?
    Thanks!

You can use any media you like to transfer the music from one device to another.
Apple have posted a 'how to' using an iPod as an external hard drive. You can do exactly the same with your external drive.
    Here is is :-

Just follow the instruction from the 'Copy iTunes folder to iPod' section but copy to your external harddrive instead.

  • Move library from 1 external drive to another (larger)

Long ago I moved my library to an external drive and its getting too full!
Whats the protocol for moving from 1 external to another external--same as moving from internal to external?
Will that method copy all the metadata etc...for the library?
    Thanks!

Using regular Finder look inside the folder you were just trying to open.  Is there a file called iTunes Library.itl?  If not then you do not have a complete library file and you left something behind in one of your moves.  That is the library file, though only part of a series of files and folders that make up a complete library.
By the way, you should only have been holding down the shift key if using Windows.  Are you using Windows?  If you are then it adds a whole new approach.

  • Move Library from External to External?

    Hello
I have a Macbook Pro. I keep the music I listen to most on my internal drive and much of the CDs that I don't listen to very often on an external drive. I recently ran out of space on my original drive (Thanks Time Machine!) and now want to move my External Drive library to my new 500GB external drive.
Simply moving them doesn't change the location in iTunes. Is there an easy way to do this? I do not want to "consolidate" as it shows in the documents from Apple. That will move my internal drive music to the external and defeat the purpose of what I am trying to accomplish.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi these 2 articles may help. I personally have had experience in doing it the wrong way. That's why I have included the second article, because when you do it the wrong way itunes "loses" all your songs. Hopefully the first article will preclude the need for the second.

  • Move library from one computer to a new computer

We've just bought a new laptop. After I loaded iTunes I took the backup from the old desktop and installed it onto the laptop. When I connect the iPhone to the laptop it recognises the laptop, but doesn't show any details. How do I sync to the new library?

What did you backup from the old PC? The entire itunes folder, or just the itunes Music subfolder?

  • Move Library from old drive to new drive on the same computer

I have installed a new drive on my current computer system and I somehow can't seem to locate my music library on my old drive. Is there a way to locate the itunes library without having to delete or erase any music? Please help!

Right-click a song or other item, choose Get Info, and look at the Summary section. Rented movies will not have a listed location.

  • Move library from xp to 7 and external drive

Anyone out there who can help me with this? I'm a complete amateur and close to going mad about this... Thanks a bunch!
I acquired a new laptop and would like to get rid of my old desktop computer, thus need to transfer my iTunes library (lots of music from CD's in it, too). While I'm at it, I considered it wise to transfer the library to an external drive in order to save space on my laptop's hard drive. My old desktop computer had Windows XP for an operating system, my new laptop runs Windows 7.
I have now all my music files on that external drive connected to the laptop and accordingly changed the location of the library in the advanced tab of the iTunes preferences. Recently acquired files (were not included in the "old" library I want to transfer) that display perfectly well in iTunes (on the new laptop computer) are located in the exact same spot on that external drive. However, all the transferred files will not display in iTunes unless I double click on them in the Windows explorer. This, I imagine, tells me that the files at least now are in the right location, still somehow I am not able to make them appear in iTunes. Any useful hints will be highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

    Format the drive MS-DOS.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from the iMac to the external.
Plug the external into the Windows computer.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library.
Select the iTunes folder on the external.
That is all you need to do.
