everytime i try to convert from an avi file it wont work no matter what format i am tryin to convert to but it plays in quicktime fine i followed the tutorials and it always says failed 11

Use MPEG Streamclip beta version 19b2 which has an export to 3g2 option.
Note for AVI files it is generally quite helpful to add the free Perian component from Perian.org.

Having recently become as Mac user, I recently purchased iSkySoft Video convertor so that I could convert my library of avi movies (that I use for medical teaching) into Quicktime.
Weirdly some of the movies I convert work beautifully, while others convert so that all can be seen is a large green blanket of nothingness.

Anyway, the camera only came with a Windows disk. Per the manufacturer, it doesn't need mac drivers, and the windows drivers are only for the web cam function (which i don't use.)
The camera is formatted under FAT32 (Windows) format. I couldn't run permissions repair. I did do a repair disk under disk utility. Still having the issues.
I tried iMovie. I can import the avi file from the camera, and it works!!!!
So it would appear that there's a bad codec in QT/Perian/VLC?

AVI has been dead for many years and is the wrong container to share files.
Since you've published the file to YouTube the viewer only needs Flash Player to view it.
If you are trying to "share" the source file so the Windows user can make edits then you need to tell us more about it.

I'm using a kodak Z50 digital camera that records video files as .mov files. I was told I could convert the files to .avi files using quicktime pro, but I can't figure out how to do it. Anyone know?

Unfortunately, the drive is pretty much restricted without hacking it. That is, you can't stream its content via standardized protocols like UPnP, SMB, FTP and the like. This makes you won't be able to access its content from any third-party apps otherwise capable of playing back AVI files from UPnP / SMB / FTP / WebDAV etc. sources.
While this is certainly not a recommendation (I can in no way be held responsible if anything goes wrong): you may want to consider extending the capabilities of the drive by installing the hack: http://www.hackseagatesatellite.com/wordpress/welcome/
It'll "open" the drive for third-party, AVI-capable multimedia apps like GoodPlayer, It's Playing etc. to directly play the files over the network.

Ripping audio from AVI

Hi,
I wasn't sure where to post this question. I didn't see a forum that looked apropriate, and since I'm using an iMac G5 I thought this one was as good as any other. So, what I'm after is software that will allow me to extract audio from AVIs, MPGs, etc. Any suggestions?

Just wanted to follow up on my original post. I first tried using a freeware AVI spitter called Explicit, then importing the 9-12 minute pieces into iMovie. There was a few problems with this method, though. First, it took around 15 minutes to import one 9-12 minute AVI segment. Second, after it was imported and converted into DV format (the format iMovie uses) it was something like a gig in size. Lastly, the audio, the thing I was after, was completely mangled. So, I downloaded Divx Doctor 2, converted the AVI, and then was able to use Peak (a great audio editing program by BIAS) and was able to extract all the audio and save it as AIFF. I could have actually saved it to any one of several formats, at 16 or 24 bits, for those who aren't familiar with the program. By the way, you can convert more than AVIs with Divx Doctor 2.

The .AVI format is just a wrapper for many different ways of storing audio/video - some 'flavors' work in iMovie/iDVD and some don't.
I have a video camera that produces a 'flavor' of .AVI file that requires VisualHub at http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/ so that I can convert the files into DV video files that CAN be used in iMovie/iDVD.

CS4: Converting AVCHD to DV-AVI Type II - what's your tool / approach?

My machine lacks the horsepower to handle native AVCHD without a lot of jerky playback issues, and in a previous thread I got a lot of good advice on solving this problem. Short of buying faster ponies, the best solution as I understand it is to first convert to the native DV-AVI Type II format that Premeire uses.
I thought that finding the appropriate conversion tool would be a short Google and / or Adobe Forum search away, but half a day of searching both and I've still not found a suitable solution. I'm attempting to convert .mts files from a Panasonic AG-HMC70P camera. Here are the results thus far for PC based programs:

Perhaps it's able to accomplish the AVCHD - DV-AVI Type II conversion. However, I've not yet been able to flip the right switches to succeed. Perhaps if I had more education in world of video formats its user interface would be more intuitive, but I'm not seeing an obvious path to the correct conversion. Anyone successfully converted and imported the results into Premiere from this one? If so, what settings did you use?

Seems like a nice program, but the output files didn't seem to play nice with Premiere. Audio & video out of sync.
I've looked at many others but these are the only ones I've downloaded and given a try. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who needs to do this conversion. If you have a tool that you're using that supports batches of files, I'd be grateful if you'd share the info on it.
If I can't find a good conversion program (wouldn't have thought it would be so hard to find one), I'm wondering if Adobe Media Encoder would generate the same results. In other words, if I dropped an .mts file on a timeline in Premiere and then exported it to AVI / NTSC DV Widescreen (or some other such setting), would this give me the same results, i.e. a native DV-AVI Type II file?
Would appreciate any suggestions you might have on converting AVCHD footage.

While it would be nice if I could find a suitable program to just batch convert the files, I don't seem to be having much luck on that front. It's a bit more of a workflow hassle to step it through Premiere -> Media Encoder in order to get the initial raw SD footage that I want to edit, but on the bright side it does seem to be the path of maximum control in terms of the quality of files I end up with for editing. So maybe that's the way to go.

I bought Quicktime pro 7 for windows to convert mov files to avi files so I can import them into Sony Vegas. But after converting the mov files...vegas still won't recognize the AVI file that was converted by Quicktime Pro. So after doing research on other forums it seems that there are 2 types of AVI files (divx and xvid). My question is does QT pro only convert the MOV files to one type of AVI and if so...then how do I go about getting a refund.

You seem to misunderstand what MOV and AVI files are. Basically, both are just generic file containers. They may contain amy combination of audio and video compressed data that is compatible with the codec configuration of the system on which the file is created. What you should be asking yourself here is what compression formats (what data within the file container) can be edited by the Sony Vegas software. According to to Sony,
"Vegas Pro takes a no transcode, no rewrap approach with Panasonic P2 AVC-Intra and DVCPRO source material. Vegas Pro eliminates the transcode and rewrap process that other applications require, so editors can save valuable production time, minimize storage requirements, and preserve the pristine quality of the original source material. Other natively supported codecs and formats include XAVC, XAVC S, XDCAM™, XDCAM EX, NXCAM, HDCAM-SR™, AVCCAM, RED® R3D, AVCHD, and AVC-based MOV files from popular DSLR cameras. For 3D content creation, Vegas Pro also supports stereoscopic 3D MVC and MPO files from Sony camcorders."
This, of course, brings up the question of what kind of compressed data is contained in your original MOV file since your problem is most likely not the MOV file type but rather the data you have stored in the file based on the fact that, according to Sony, this editor is supposed to be compatible with "AVC-based MOV" files and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) and MPEG-4 audio (AAC) are virtually a default QT AV compression format whether in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers. Therefore, when asking questions regarding MOV file content, your should normally include the compression formats of the data contained in the file to better ***** various issues and workflows or provide a sample file for examination by others.
So after doing research on other forums it seems that there are 2 types of AVI files (divx and xvid).
QT can only access the DivX and XviD codecs if they are available to the QT 7 Pro app. I.e., these are proprietary codecs not included in the QT installation package. A better question here might be whether or not the Sony Vegas software can edit these compression formats since they are not listed as being supported natively by Sony. That is, you need to be importing file container/compression format combinations that are listed as being edit compatible with the software you are trying to use for your edits.

While QT 7 Pro remains compatible with the AVI file container, as varjak paw indicated, there are only a limited number of compression formats that are QT encode compatible and even fewer listed as Sony Vegas. I.e., why don't you try a DVCPRO AVI or an H.264/AAC MOV conversion as suggested above and see if it might be compatible with your editor. However, the best approach is not to transcode data if at all possible. That is why it would be important to know the workflow you are using to source your content. I.e., how is the data being placed in the MOV file container? Was it originally recorded to an MOV file container? Was it imported to a video editor on a Mac and then passed on to you? Was it copied from a different source file to the current MOV file container? Etc., etc., etc... I.e., at this point all we can do is make guesses as to things you can try because you have provided insufficient information regarding your files, workflows, and goals here.

HELP! Converting MPEG4 into Mov, AVI, WMV

I made a small clip on iMovie. I need to upload to a website for my band. I clicked on Share then export movie to my desktop. The website clearly says..."For video, we accept the following formats: WMV, MOV, AVI, MPG, MP4, FLV"

Everytime I try to upload it tells me, "We do not accept the format of the file you selected. Please make sure your file format matches one of those listed above."

If using 4:3, which would be better given the AR of the movie required by your website, using the export to movie and then choosing the mobile size should be just fine. However your website may not like the .m4v extension added to the movie, in which case simply open the movie in Quicktime and select save as from the file menu, the resulting video will now be in a .mov container which you can then try uploading to your website.

I suspect your mpeg-4 bitrates are too high.

You may be able to right or ctrl click on the problem file in iTunes and choose Convert to AppleTV format - trouble is it will re-encode the 'incompatible file' again and probably further reduce quality.

Best way to convert .mov files to .avi???

Hi, I'm getting kind of desperate here. I've been trying to export .mov files in compressor as .avi files. The video is coming out the same quality and is working fine but the audio is totally out of sync from the beginning, even though the clips are about 30sec long each.
So, whats the best method to converting .mov files to .avi? I also tried using quicktime itself, (using the export menu). The exported material looks choppy though and won't play right. This may be because the footage is HD, 1080p shot on a JVC camera that recorded straight onto a memory card as .mov files.

Okay, I have the files already in .mov as I was saying. So, I'm trying to convert them for my actress' editor (who requested them in AVI) because he uses Adobe Premiere Pro on a Windows Platform. I'm not sure which Premiere Pro version he has, nor do I know which formats it accepts as a result.
You really know how to make things difficult. This adds a whole new set of questions. According to Adobe, if using v3.2.0 or later, there is direct support for XDCAM EX content stored to an SxS card which is not dependent on the "wrapper" (MOV or AVI in this case). So the fist question is what Premier Pro version is she using. Adobe also keeps referring to this content as "Sony XDCAM EX" content which makes me wonder if they are only supporting XDCAM EX content stored on a Sony manufactured camcorder or if the support is generic for any XDCAM EX camcorder manufacturer using the format, which was of course, "developed" by Sony. If the latter, then the next question becomes can the SxS content be be "imaged" for import/capture using Premier Pro's SxS built-in camcorder/card reader routine. If it can be imaged, then, as a non-Windows user, I simply do not know the best method for doing so. If it can't be imaged, would you be willing/able to send her the SxS card itself (or a cloned copy thereof) for her use. On the other hand, if she is using an older version of Premier Pro that does not support native XDCAM EX/Linear PCM editing, you need to ask her what specific compression formats she needs to be wrapped in her requested AVI file container. Until you know more/answer these questions, you cannot proceed further.
I also tried using Mpeg Streamclip to convert the files to a AVI with a divx compression. Some worked, but most of them would get to 85% or 95% then drop off and say "compression error"... (settings were: quality 100%, frame rate 23.97 (what the video is), frame size 1280 x 720, Upper field dominance) ... I thought I put everything there right... SO what is happening is that about 85% of the clip will be there just fine, but then, all of a sudden, the video in the last few seconds will freeze on a frame and audio will be the only thing playing.
Since you did not supply complete specific settings, it is difficult to tell for sure. For instance, if your target video data rate is set too low for the HD content, then at the 85-95% point the application may determine that it is impossible to achieve the target average data rate and stop compressing changes in the video scenes and you end up with either a frozen frame or a black screen. Have had this happen to with other encodes using MPEG-4/AVC. Basically the codec is simply reducing the current instantaneous video rate in an attempt to achieve the targeted "average" data rate by the time the end of the file is reached and the current date rate is simply too low to display more than a black screen or a picture in motion.
Is it usually this difficult to convert formats like this? I thought it would be a quick fix, but it seems I'm running into a bunch of different problems.
No, but then in a normal work for you would already know what format the editor actually wants to use for editing. As I indicated previously, it is unclear at this time whether she wants to edit content in the "native" format in Premier Pro or needs to have you convert the content to a different editing compression format. iMovie '09, for instance would normally use AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec)/AIFF (Linear PCM) for editing HD content.

Converting MPEG2 video to AVI

I am using PE4 and I am trying to edit video from a DVD. Usually, I have edited video from my camcorder; this is my first time using video from a different source. My question is; should I convert this video into AVI for better quality/easier to edit? If so, can PE4 do this or do I have to download/buy a MPEG-AVI converter program? Well, as they say, your mileage may vary. Particularly with non-DV-AVI files.
But, with DV-AVIs, you can practically guarantee success.
So it's up to you which option you choose.
