Cooling Fan runs constantly

Is anyone else experiencing fan issues?  I have a mid-2011 MacBook Air 13" (4gb RAM, 128mb SDD).  Problem is that the cooing fan runs non stop...and it's LOUD.  I run it on a stand, lid closed attached to a 27inch LG Display.  Anyone else seen this?

The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.

  • Cooling fan runs constantly on Tecra A3

I have a Tecra A3 an my fans runs constantly, even when idleing, and it has done this since i got it (about 18 months ago). It also runs at a constant rate, and it's just like hear Arnold talk - very annoying. Sometimes one (?) of the fans stopp running for just a couple a seconds, and then it starts again, back to the same speed. I've had the computer in for repairs, and they changed the fan and cleand the cooling system, but this didn't make things better, well, okay, I got rid of the ratteling sound, but that was all!
I've tried everything i can think of, currently I'm running the computer fixed on the lowest setting for the processor speed and battery optimized cooling by the help of the Power Saver utility, but it doesn't seem to help at all. I also tried setting the processor speed to low in the BIOS setup, this made some difference, and the fan stayed of for periods of up to 30 seconds (!), bur the performance of the computers performance was horrible with these settings so I had to change it back to dynamic processor speed.
As for the the temeratures i get at temperature of about 36-37 degrees celsius (95-97 degrees Fahrenheit) for the HD temperature (using speedfan). So theres no problems with overheating (?). This leads me to believe that this might be due to a bug in the software. I'm currently using a norwegian install of Windows XP with SP2, it's a custom install, provided by my university (my computer is a student PC bought through the university).
So, can anyone help my make my computer quiet, like normal, sane computers ?!
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hello Stigs
I use Tecra notebook (M1) for years and I can tell you that this model is really one of quietest notebooks I know but it is definitely no utterly quiet and cooling fan runs almost constantly but on slowest level. I know that it has nothing with your problem but I just want to say that quietest notebook produces noises.
Reading your posting I can just say that you are probably right when you say that it can not be because of hardware because the notebook temperature is OK and there is no sign of overheating. The fact is that all newer notebooks are louder than some old models and Tecra A3 is one of them and unfortunately there is no much to do. As far as I know nobody has reported about any software bug till now. Many bugs are fixed by BIOS updates and all I can recommend you, is to check if new BIOS version is available and see if this can help. Please before you start with BIOS update read carefully Instructions how to do this.
    Good luck!

  • Satellite L850-1KG - cooling fan runs constantly

    Hello
I have the problem that constantly runs in my Nootebook the fan. How can I open the case and clean it?
    I have a Satellite L850-1KG
    Thank you

I don't know how old is your notebook and if dust can be reason for permanently running cooling fan but try please at first to check advanced power options. There you will find option for cooling method. Set it please to battery optimized. This should reduce cooling fan activity.
I also hope you use notebook on the desk and cooling fan/cooling grill is free.
By the way: do you use original Toshiba recovery image with original display driver?

  • Cooling fan runs too much

I've had my MacBook for about 5 months. Recently (the past month or so) I've noticed the cooling fan running a a lot. Even if it's in a cool environment, sitting on a desktop, it will sometimes run constantly. There are only a couple of applications open and no CD/DVD in the drive. This problem is random; for instance, today it started after I restarted my machine. It's been running non-stop for a half hour now. I do regular updates, including the latest firmware update last week. Any ideas?

I'm not surprised. Last time mine did it is was a printjob that was running. I didn't try to print but something I looked at or did caused it to start.
Go back into activity monitor and high light the process. Then click the stop sign looking icon to quit that process.

  • Macbook Pro fan running constantly and CPU running slow

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2010 2.3 i7 that has started running really slow and the fan is running constantly.
In activity monitor it shows a kernel_task running constantly at around or above 200%.
I have tried all the regular tasks.  PRam reset, SMC reset and nothing seems to fix it.
I have also tried a system reinstall to no avail.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but from what I have read, the kernel_task might be trying to slow my CPU down because it thinks it is being overworked?
Maybe the fans are also being activated because it thinks the computer is too hot?
Anyway, if anyone has any idea as to what I can do to figure out what is going on, let me know.  Thanks

  • Updated to OS 10.7.3; fan runs constantly and battery life dropped to under 2 hours when 100% charged. How do I get back to 10.7.2, I don't have a backup prior to this upgrade. This is a newer Macbook Pro 13", no modifications.

Help! This new version of Lion is making me miserable. The fan runs constantly, the computer is hot and battery life has dropped to under 2 hours on a fully charged battery. I updated yesterday, nothing but misery today. Even running the mail program alone make the fan run like I have everything open. Using Pages, iPhoto, and iTunes simultaneously makes the computer blistering hot.Yesterday, I could use all three without any trouble. Any suggestions to either jettison 10.7.3 or how to fix without any expense? I haven't modified this computer at all, it is as it came from the box in August 2011: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.

I updated to Lion 10.7.3 and started noticing my fans running on high all the time and my battery would drain 2-3x faster.  I was going to take my computer into an Apple store until I found this thread.  I did the SMC reset by shutting down my computer, plugging it in, and then pushing down shift+control+option while also pushing down the power button.  Nothing happens on the screen and the computer did not turn on.  I then released all the buttons at once after holding them down for 10 seconds.
After that, I simply turned my computer back on and everything seems to be working fine.  The  fans are not blasting anymore.  I have a newer MacBook Pro where I can't access my batteries.  The SMC reset may differ for other types of laptops.

  • Fans running Constantly!

I just purchased and set up a Mac pro 2- 2.66GHz dual-core Intel Xeon. The fans run constantly and they are extremely loud. I've tried the unplug for 15 seconds and restart. I've also tried resetting the SMC. This worked for the first four minutes after I turned the computer on. This computer has only been set up for two days and it's well ventilated. What can I do stop the noise or did I just get a lemon?

Unfortunately if you were to get a replacement Mac Pro you'd have the same issues--I'm pretty sure, at least. Problem 1: the Mac Pro's front grille is the only thing that separates you from the hard disk which is sitting inches from that thin, airy sheet of metal. The hard disk on my Mac Pro had loud acoustics when reading and writing (the normal seek operation). This is, unfortunately, normal.
Depending on your drive model, there are linux (and Windows) utilities that can be used to set the acoustic management on the drive to make it near silent again. Let me know if you'd like more information and if you aren't afraid to boot up from a Linux live CD.
The "fan" noise you talk about when using CD's is probably the CD drive itself (spinning the disc) and not the fans. This, again, unfortunately, is normal. Not much you can do here as most CD drives are relatively noisy--especially at the high-speed rates of today's drives.

  • Satellite C55-A - after BIOS update cooling fan runs faster

    Hello,
I was informed by Toshiba application that new BIOS version is available I confirmed it and BIOS was updated. Now I have problem. Cooling fan runs faster than before and it is very annoying.
Can I find older BIOS version somewhere and roll it back? I don't need it if it doesn't work properly.
Now I have version 1.40. Is there some solution for this new version?
Message was edited: posting has been translated

Toshiba EU driver page provides only the latest BIOS version.
Furthermore the BIOS downgrade isnt possible using the win-bases BIOS update.
In order to downgrade the BIOS on Toshiba unit, you will need to use the traditional BIOS update method which requires special BIOS version. This is available only for authorized service provider.
At the other hand there must be an serious reason why the cooling module run faster.
Maybe the cooling method has been improved in new BIOS just to ensure that internal parts would be cooled down properly.
Its just an assumption but I think it makes sense
By the way: after each BIOS update, you should load the BIOS default settings and should save the changes. If you havent done this in the past, do it

  • After installing Lion , my computer crashes and the fan runs constantly on high

After installing Lion , my computer crashes and the fan runs constantly on high. How is Apple resolving this problem?

Try to reset your SMC, it fixed the same problem for me ;o)

  • Battery shows X and fans run constantly.

All of a sudden yesterday, my computer wouldn't turn on. I finally took the battery out numerous times and decided to hold the power button, that fixed it. Now, my computer works but the battery at the top corner shows an X (but works when unplugged) and my fans run constantly.
I know this issue was common on the old plastic MacBooks, but I can't find any issues with this one.
    -Unibody 2.0Ghz w/ 4GB of Ram.
    It's updated to 10.5.7

Usually when the battery display shows an X, it means there's no battery detected. Yet you say it works when unplugged. Odd.
The first step is always to try resetting the SMC, which it kind of sounds like you did:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
You can also try zapping the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
The high-running fans might be the result of an out-of-control CPU process. Check Activity Monitor (make sure it shows "All Processes" and not just "My Processes") and see if something is eating up a bunch of CPU. You can kill that process from within Activity monitor and see if that helps the fan.
If none of those work, call AppleCare or visit your local Apple Store Genius, and have it serviced under warranty, as it's likely a hardware issue. Good luck!

  • IMac fan running constantly is this ok??

ok so i got my 21.5-inch, Mid 2011, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac and i can hear the fans running constantly so i was wondering if this was ok or not so i downloaded stat pro to check my fan speeds and my fans are running at:
Optical Drive 1399rpm - No disc in
    Hard drive 1099rpm
    Cpu Fan 1190rpm
i was just wanting to no if they look right or not?
    please let me not thanks

    Hi Aldan,
all the fans run all the time, they never stop.
It might make you feel better to get aftermarket Pref. panel like 'Fan Control' which displays the speed in your Menu Bar & you can adjust the speeds also, if you wish.
And by the way those speeds are normal.

  • Macbook pro is not charging, fans running constantly and very loudly

I have a macbook pro 13-inch, Late 2011, until a month or so ago it had been running perfectly with no problems. At some point the magasfe power adapter stopped working, when i plugged it into my laptop there would be no light on it, and my laptop would not turn on or show any sign of turning on, i also tried the charger on my friends macbook and it did not charge hers either, i assumed it was a problem with the charger and therefore bought a new one but then found there was other problems with the laptop, it seems to only turn on when i connect the charger and then quickly press the power button before a light comes on the magsafe power adapter and hold it for around 5 seconds, the light is constantly green on the magsafe power adapter, as soon as it starts up the fans come on and are extremely noisy, the barttery doesn't charge and the laptop only works when connected to a source of power, the battery icon has an x in it and says 'no battery available' i have tried multiple supposed fixes such as resetting the SMC, cleaning the fan, and other things i have seen online but nothing seems to be working, I'm starting to wonder if the battery needs to be replaced? and if that has anything to do with the fans running constantly, can anyone help or having any other suggestions of how to fix my problem?
    thanks

  • MBP fans run constantly, CPU hot

Hi There -- The fans in my MBP run constantly with CPU temps up to 89c after downloading 10.6.8, even with just the Finder running. There's nothing hogging up CPU in the Activity Monitor, and I don't have Parallels. I've reset the SMC and trashed the Dock preferences multiple times as recommnded by others to no avail. Any other ideas out there? Thanks.

For anyone who stumbles across this post, I wanted to update what ended up happening. I decided not t purchase CoolBook, as I felt that would merely treat the symptom and not the cause of the overheating problem. My MBP sits on an iLap which in the past has always kept it cool. Something in the 10.6.8 update was causing the CPU to heat up extraordinarily with nothing unusual showing in Activity Monitor under All Processes, or anywhere else for that matter, with just the Finder running.
I decided to try downgrading to 10.6.7. I followed the steps outlined by member Alexandre in another post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3146928?start=0&tstart=0
When I was done, all was cool and quiet. Everything was back to normal. CPU temps dropped by 30 degrees Celsius.
I guess 10.6.7 will be the end of the line for this particular MacBook Pro until some kind of other fix becomes evident. Thanks again for the members that provided help. Much appreciated.

  • Fans running constantly hp laserjet 8150dn

The fans are running constantly on my hp laserjet 8150 they never shuts off.
Power save is set to 30 min. This is ok, display indicates "PowerSave On". after 30 min.
According to the manual the fans should shut off in Powersave mode 2, after the fuser has cooled down. estimated time 10 min, fuser is cooling down, but fans never turn off. Further, the manual says that the green light on the front of the control panel should blink, but mine does not blink -- it just stays green. Have replaced the dc controller, but the problem is still there.

    There are no error codes

    beachblondie,
February 2014 I bought a HP chromebook 14 (q000ed) to replace my Samsung series 5 chromebook
i never had any problems especcialy regarding fan noise.
Now my gf found it very convenient to take the CB to school
so i decided to get an other used Chrombook 14(q012ed, same hw but other colour)
from a student who could not work with ChromeOS because it was bound to software only available on windows,
so he used it for maybe two weeks
this CB was from December 2013.
when i got home i booted it up and then i heard the load annoying fan noise
then i started my own CB which makes an inaudible noise
so i send it to HP to replace the Fan
now i got it back and it still makes the noise a somewhat annoying humming noise
so i opened them both up and saw that there are two different Fans installed
the silent one is a FOXCONN NFB70A05H
which i can't find anywhere online
the annoying one installed in my second CB is a KPT43Y01TP203A1D334

  • MacBook Pro fan running constantly

My 3 month old MBP's fan started running constantly a couple days ago, even when I close the lid. My usage is about 90% internet - no CPU intensive games or really anything else.
This happened about the same time my two small children were trying to play with the computer - they had gotten into the Guest account and somehow the computer was locked, so I did a hard power off. Since then (roughly) this fan problem has been present.
I can't find any software settings that would cause the fan to run constantly. Any suggestions? The machine is running very smoothly overall, and has been a bit cooler on my lap (as one would expect I suppose). But it's annoyingly loud and I'm worried the fan will die from overuse.
    Any suggestions?

Just putting the Macbook Pro Retina to Sleep by going the Apple Menu command did the trick. So another thanks for the question and Ralph's pointer to Apple's Knowledge Base article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
And let me say what a bizarre OS or fan glitch that, I guess AS OF DEC 21, 2013, still UNFIXED BY APPLE?
Like Jodi, my MBP is, hmmnnn...3 - 4 months old. And her post was over a year and a half ago. Also, bizarre that Apple has a Knowledge Base article dated from Oct. 2012 so it's clearly known about it for x amount of users...
Even if they solved it in Mavericks, they should still patch and support OS 10.8
