Copy and Moving Files

Is it possible to move files directly onto the iPod. For example I would like to add files/folders to my ipod but if I don't select to copy them and then I move that file/folder to another location anytime I try to sync my ipod I have a error messages. I would rather not have to copy to another folder and use up more space if I don't have to.
Windows XP Pro

I would rather not have to copy to another folder and use up more space if I don't have to.
Just select iTunes prefs -> Advanced - Importing and tick "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library". It will copy the file into the iTuness music folder and then you can delete the original.
You don't need to keep both copies.
if I don't select to copy them and then I move that file/folder to another location anytime
Why move the music files around?

I recently had a kernel panic in which I think my hard drive only had so much space left after I ran a bunch of drivers I thought I needed. I uninstalled all and moved files. For some odd reason I'm not getting sound of of my hdtv/monitor.HELP? I uninstalled all the drives and apps I download. I moived files either to trash if not needed, and others to other external drives. I went into disk utility and did a repair disk permission and verify disk. Clean out junk files. Now my hdtv/monitor does not give me any sound, nor does my mac mini. Can someone please tell me what to do?

    What drivers?

    Hi BobRz
Thanks for you suggestion but it didn't work - are there other ways for solving this problem? Or is it because my files that I want to copy and paste onto my hard disk etc are too big? (However there is space on my hard disk and it works on a PC)

  • Can't copy and paste files using RDP session in server 2012

I'm running windows 8, but I have also verified on a windows 7 machine as well. We have server 2012 installed on a machine
I use remote desktop to get into. I cannot copy files from my local pc and use paste to get them to the server. I could do this with server 2008. Is there some setting I have to change or does this not work with server 2012?
FYI, clipboard is checked when I open my remote desktop connection window. If I connect into a win server 2008 r2 machine from the same local machine, I can copy and paste files
    just fine.

    Hi,
I believe RDS clipboard redirection should be enabled by default also on Windows Server 2012. Is there perhaps is a Group Policy Object active that is configured to disable Clip Board Redirection? Either on the computer or the user OU. If not:
You did not explicitly state this, but I'm assuming that you are running in Application Mode (meaning you did not install the RD Session Host role) ? If so please check the registry on the Windows Server 2012 destination server and look for:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Winstations\RDP-Tcp\fDisableClip
    this should be set to
0, to make allow Clipboard Redirection
    Also check the key below:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Addins\Clip Redirector
    This should have:
    Name
    REG_SZRDPClip
    Type
    REG_DWORD0x00000003
If you did run the RD Session Host role, and you have done so using a Scenario Based Deployment (Scenario
Based Deployment of RDS in Windows Server 2012 ) you will have a Remote Desktop Management Service GUI available as pat of the Server Manager with which you can enable or disable ClipBoard Redirection from within a GUI on a Session Collection level
    or you can use PowerShell
Using Powershell to install, configure and maintain RDS in Windows Server 2012

  • Copy and paste files from Windows Explorer

    Hi everybody,
For a part of my application I need to copy and paste files and folders from Windows explorer to the vi shown in the picture.
Does anybody know how to implement this with the clipboard functionality.
Also drag and drop would be very nice (but thats maybe a later step...)
    Best regards, Helmut

    Hello Friedr,
drag and drop is the easy part!
Use a path control, this will naturally allow drag and drop. If a file is dropped on this a 'Value Change' event is fired! with this event you can load the data into the picture. To get a nice drag and drop functionality you should make the path transparent and resize to the size of the picture control. This will work fluently!
To use the clipboard, LV 8 has an functionality for this, I think it is an application event.

  • I can't copy and paste files in finder arrrgghh

Ok im not the most tech savvy person around and this is my first imac, I dont operate windows on it and am stumped. I am trying to transfer my movies onto a media player and external hard drive but it just wont do it. when I just had my previous pc all I had to do was copy and paste and am ready to scream. Does anyone have any answers????

I don't think this is necessarily a disk format problem.  I've been noticing the same thing the past few weeks.  I used to copy and paste files frequently using the Finder but it no longer works.  I have the Copy option in the contextual menu when a file is selected but I no longer have a Paste option after doing the copy.
All mounted drives on my system are formatted Mac OS Extended and the operation fails even when attempting to copy files residing on the boot drive to another folder on the same boot drive.  Digging around for a cause/solution now.
    UPDATE:
The problem in my case was an application called Clipboard Cleaner that strips all formatting from text you copy to the clipboard so you can copy from something like a Word doc and paste into an email without all the Word formatting coming along as well.  It runs in the background and apparently disables the ability to copy/paste files.

  • Can't copy and paste files

Why won't my MacBook Pro let me copy and paste files, particularly from my external hard drives (to each other) and (to my computer). They are both new and it shouldn't be a problem.
    Please help!

Is it possible that the hard drives, which you said are new, have not been formatted for the mac?  If they are formatted NTFS (which is the standard format for new drives) you will only be able to read from the drives, not write...therefore you will not be able to cut and paste.
To check the format of the drive, from the Utilities folder, open the application "Disk Utility".  Select the Hard drive from the left side of that app, and then click on the "Partition" tab.  Then click on the big Partition block found under "Volume Scheme" and see what it says beside "Format".  If it is NTFS, this is your problem.
The best solution if the drives will only be used on the mac is to use the Disk Utility Application and reformat the hard drives by selecting the drive you want to format on the left side of the app, and select the "Partition" tab.  Under Volume Scheme select "1 partition" and then for format, select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".  Then Click Apply.  PLEASE NOTE THAT DOING THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON THAT HARD DRIVE!!!!
If the drives need to be used on a windows machine as well, you can download and install this plugin for your mac that will make it read and write to NTFS although it will do so slower than a disk formatted for the mac.  Here is a link: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g    Using this option will NOT require you to loose any data that might already be on the disks.
    Hope this helps!

  • How to copy and paste files to Time Capsule

I thought it could be used as an external disk.
Do you guys know how to copy and paste files directly into Time Capsule?

I thought it could be used as an external disk.
An external disk...also known as a local disk....connects directly to a computer using USB or FireWire.
The Time Capsule is a network disk, since it connects direct to a network. As such, it s a SHARED network device
Open a Finder window and look for the SHARED heading on the left side of the window. The Time Capsule icon should appear there. Click on the Time Caspule icon.
A folder, representing the Time Capsule drive named "Data" (unless you have changed the name of the drive) will appear to the right
Double click on "Data" to mount the Time Capsule drive on the desktop. You may need to click "Connect As" and enter the Time Capsule device password the first time that you do this.

  • Problems copying and trashing files

OK - here's what I assume are two seperate issues, or they may be related. (I'm running 10.3.9 on an iBook G4 and attempting to move files to a USB external).
I have a DVD of jpg photos I was attempted to copy onto an external hard drive. About half of the 400 photos copied fine, then I got an error message midway through the copy saying something relating to at least one of the files being busy (I don't remember exactly, but I think it was the same as the error message I have below).
I have already dumped the DVD's contents into iPhoto, so I decided to do it the long way and search through iPhoto's library in the finder. I found some of the photos I wanted to copy, and when I attempt to copy them to the same directory as the DVD photos were copied to, I get this message:
The selected items cannot all be put into the same location, because at least one of them named "**.jpg" is busy.
I tried to copy individual files, and I get this for multiple files. In some cases, there was already a file with the same name in the target folder, so I trashed the file in the target folder, emptied the trash, tried the individual file again and still get the same message. No program is running with these files, and these aren't the files that were being copied when I got the first message.
I went back and looked at the target folder and saw all the files that hadn't been copied are in there with a size of 0 kb. When I try to trash these, I get this error:
    Preparing move to "Trash"
Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application. Moving the items can cause problems with the application using them. Are you sure you want to move the items?
I can click continue, but I have to do it for every file and there's about 200 of them.
So two issues: any way to get past the "file is busy" error to copy the files from my iPhoto directory to the target folder on the external? Any way to trash the files without clicking continue 200 times? And is the problem with the target volume or my iBook where the iPhoto library is? (I initially assumed the problem was with the target external, but the files giving me the "busy" error are on the iBook and give the message even when there is no file of the same name on the external.)
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks for the response, but it doesn't address the issue I'm having. (To be fair, the issue I'm having is sort of buried in my long initial post, since as is plain from my next post, I'm An Idiot).
At any rate, what I'm looking for is this: the files that weren't properly copied are now sitting in a folder in my external hard drive, along with the files that were properly copied.
There are about 200 files which are just filenames with a size of 0k. I can find all these fine by sorting the folder window by size.
However, whenever I drag them to the trash, an error message pops up telling me the file is in use by another application. I can click on continue, but I get an error message for every file I drag to the trash. I don't feel like clicking continue 200 times, although I suppose I could. I was wondering if there's a way to tell the Finder these files are not actually in use, both to save my mouse finger now and possibly in the future if this problem repeats itself.
    Thanks.

  • Finding and moving files

I have an external hard drive that has many folders. Within the folders are scattered movie files. I am looking for a script or a hint that would allow me to to search the external hard drive, locate the files and then copy them to a single folder.
    thanks

I think that it would be easiest done through the Find function in Finder or spotlight. As an alternative you could use the find command in terminal. Something like this should do the trick:
    find /where/to/search ( -name *.avi -or -name *.mpg ) -exec mv {} /path/to/new/location/ ;
An AppleScript might be too much work for this job. One can of course wrap the above command with some AppleScript and obtain the location where to start the search and the target folder interactively but I personally would still use the above command for the actual searching and moving.

  • Copying and Moving Mail from Snow Leopard to Lion

    Hello
What is the best way to move mail data from a Snow Leopard machine to a Lion machine?
My mail data is presently on my iMac which is running Snow Leopard. I want to copy and move this mail to my new MacBook Air that came installed with Lion (not an upgrade from Snow Leopard).
In the past, it was just a matter of copying the "mail" folder in the library and the plist and pasting them in the same location on the new machine. However, I have read that this does not work any more.
What is the best way to do this?
    Looking forward to some guidance.
    Cheers!
    Darren

    Hi ozdazza,
I have managed to solve the problem and move all my emails from my old mac running 10.5.8 to my new mac running 10.7.2 with the following steps. Please note that in order for these to work, you need to have copy of your old email accounts either at your new mac desktop or in your time machine (or any external HD connected to your new mac)
1- In my new mac, I created email accounts similar to the ones in my old mac (names and setting),
2- I copied my old emails (one email account at a time so I do not get confused) and placed  it on my new mac desktop. Please note that inbox messages in OS 10.5.X are stored in user/library/mail/pop.file/inbox.mbox. And outbox messages are stores in user/library/mail/pop.file/outbox.mbox and so forth. For copying messages in your inbox the file you should copy to your desktop is the inbox.mbox NOT the mail file or NOT the pop file.
3- Open your mail app in your new mac and chose “import mailboxes” under file menu.
4- Chose import data from “Apple Mail” which is the first choice.
5- Chose the inbox.mbox file to be imported.
6- After the importing process finish, you will see all your messages in a new folder called “Import” in your mailboxes column within your new mail app.
7- Now click on that import box to display all your messages in the middle column in your email app.
8- Highlight all the messages by clicking comm+A
9- Drag all the highlighted messages to your newly created inbox.
10- After the drag&drop process finished, you can delete the import box.
Above process can be done with the sent.mbox as well, but in such process you use the sent.mbox for old email account and drag its messages (step 9) to the sent file in your new email account box.
I had managed to move or transfer 3 emails account each one with 2 boxes (inbox and sentbox) with a total size of over 8GB in only less than 10 minutes.
The key problem in all my previous import attempts is that I was importing the wrong file and trying to place it in the wrong place.
I hope above process works well for you as it did for me.

  • Does the last updated backup in Time Machine have all my files for "standard" file copy? (i want to copy and paste files to another computer that doesn't have TM)

My personal Macbook pro died, but I did have a Time Machine backup. I have a new iMac that I would like to use as a family computer. I would like to transfer some files to the new computer (and set-up a new Time Machine backup), but archive the remainder on a non-TM drive. I was planning to:
    1. File copy my last backup folder from my old TM drive to the new computer
    2. Copy (and then delete) the files I want to archive on another HD drive
    3. Wipe clean my current TM drive
    4. Set-up TM on my new computer
Is this a good way to proceed?
Is copying the last backup folder (vs. all backup folders) enough to move my files over?
    Any better approaches appreciated!

I suggest you visit MicroCenter and go to there Apple section and ask one of there guys if they are still offering the 2 terabyte Backup For the iMac, Mine was only $100.00.
So the iMac has Time machine plus the USB 2 Terabyte Backup for less than your $130.00
