Copy and paste multiple texts from Word to Indesign

Hello!!
I would like to simplify multiple operations where I need to copy multiple text boxes from a Word doc into multiple boxes in Indesign, and be able to specify the exact location of each box in the Indesign doc. For example, I would like to take 7 text boxes from a Word doc and copy them separately into 7 boxes in the Indesign doc, rather than have to go back and forth into the Word doc. 7 times and pasting each text box one by one.
See the screenshots
Thank you in advance,
Enrico

That looks a lot like case for Data Merge. It won´t give you any tools for copy/pasting multiple textboxes but with little work, you could make a template where you could drop multiple Items like you have in your screenshot. It won´t work with docs, but if you can convert your stuff to excel, then it would be quite nice solution for you.

  • Copy and paste multiple text layers DW CC

I searched around and couldn't find a good solution to an issue I am having.  I am solid with DW but by no means brilliant, so hopefully this doesn't come across as completely ignorant.   Basically, I have a 400 plus page website that I have to do updates on often.. the way the client wanted it designed makes it problematic for updates regardless of my informing him that doing it differently could save us both a lot of problems, but at the same time, the site is actually perfect for what it is due to how it was done and no templating based site out there can do what it does so I am stuck with it for now.  Each of the 400 plus pages has 6 individual text layers that had to be laid out according to the individual photo on each page, very specialized.  My question is, is there a way to copy and paste multiple layers in DW.  Small updates are fine, but larger updates are a nightmare due to the text issue and page numbers, and believe me, I have been up and down and around about how to make it easier.. but, that said, if I could copy all six layers at once and paste all six in the new document, life would be a lot easier on this project.  I also tried linking the layers and sending them, but that doesn't seem to work for some reason.
    Any thoughts guys?
    Thanks much for your time.

Thanks Jon, I will give that a try at some point, I am more on the designer end of things but I could manage to find the layers and give that a shot.   I would love to show you the site, but the owner is very security conscious and only allows certain parties to see the site. I don't have any knowledge of background driven sites as web design is more of an extra thing when a client just really wants me involved.  I am fine with the repetitive work.. if what you suggest works, it breaks my job down by 6 times and that would actually be a huge relief.  Though I am over paid and hourly and the client has plenty of money, I just stop enjoying what I am doing with it after a bit to the point that I don't want to do it anymore regardless of the money.  I have thought of subcontracting someone with more experience in the arena that could make it database driven like you are saying, but, it is just such a monster that getting someone else involved (especially with a client that keeps it so close) will be more work than it is worth.  Fortunately, I think there will only be another update or two and then it will be finished as a collection.    The site houses a world renowned textile collection half photo half info about the pieces.. my method thus far has been to keep the photos laid out in Lightroom, where I output the monster site in one of the simple flash sites and then add the text in DW.. I take the new photos and html and connect them to the new site and front thumbnail pages with my original which I have kept adding to over the years.  To a degree it is decently quick and efficient, but when he drops or buys more than 10 pieces, and then needs to change photos, thumbs, and add text to anywhere but the last few pages, it can get into headacheland.   With a major change, it would be faster for me to just reoutput the whole photo based flash site from LR and then copy and paste all six layers on each photo..  but as you know, that has been my issue thus far and what I get for only having my toes into a program.
    Thanks for your reply..

  • Problems copying and pasting multiple slides from one captivate to another.

I have been able to copy and paste several slides into
another captivate and suddenly this has stopped working. I am using
the ctrl key to select multiple slides (a set of 3) and the using
the Edit drop-down to select copy slide. Then, I click on the other
captivate and click paste slides. It is only bringing 1 slide, the
first one, and not the 2nd and 3rd... any ideas. I've had another
set of eyes look over my shoulder... and we're both scratching our
    heads.
Also, for some reason the text entry boxes are being copied,
but the failure caption associated with it does not come along. It
also copied the button but lost the association with the text entry
    box. WTH?

This might work, this might not. I have copy paste problems
on a regular basis and all that works for me is closing Captivate
down and then re open and continue. At worst, a reboot tends to
solve this glitch in my experience.
    Good Luck

  • When I copy and paste an image from Word for usage in a Framemaker document it becomes blurred.

    Hi,
I am saving graphics from Word for usage in a Framemaker document. When I copy and paste the file into photoshop it becomes blurred and unusable. How do I resolve this? I have tried saving the file in it's highest resolution but that doesn't work either.
    Thanks,
    Niall.

The problem has to be the image itself, but then you give us zero information.
We don't even know what platform you are on, Macintosh or Windows, what exact version of the OS, of Photoshop, or Word you are using, how you are getting what kind of image from Word, etc.
It could be that you're just copying the low resolution thumbnail preview from MS Word, but we know nothing about its dimensions, resolution or format.

  • Auotmating Text from Word into InDesign

Here is my situation: I am the graphic artist and layout person for the company that I work for.  We produce layouts that have a pretty consistent format.   Each layout has definite text sections.  These text sections are written by the research editor and put into a single word document.  I then have to copy and past the various text sections into the layout in InDesign.
I know that if my Research Editors worked in InCopy it would elminate the need for me to copy and paste the text from word doc into the the layout document.  The problem is that one of the editors is a contract worker that is outside the office.
I was wondering if there was some way to set up a template in word.  The idea would be that once the document is finished it could be imported into InDesign in a way that it would automatically populate the the text sections in the layout.

Well you know what I mean, by copy and paste.  I place the text in first to preserve the formatting.
This seems backwards, to me. Is the "formatting" in the Word document based on styles? If it is, you can map your InDesign styles to your Word styles on import. If it's not, then I find it much faster to change the formatting into styles immediately upon import.
If you're not using any defined styles at all in your InDesign document, then yeah, I guess that copying and pasting is faster and a better way to preserve the manually applied formatting in Word. But why do that, when using well-defined styles in ID can be significantly faster?

  • Copy and Paste Unformatted Text to documents

A very useful feature at times is the ability to copy and paste formatted text from pages (in this case webpage) to a document (text edit, word). Which means that what ever bold, font or style on a page is copied to the clipboard and then pasted identically to the document.
    question:
Is there a way to copy or paste the plain text of the clipboard rather than the formatted version?
    thanks..

    Hi, SU.
Many applications support this, but how it is implemented varies by application.
In many apps, if you paste using the Command-Option-V keyboard shortcut (instead of Command-V for paste), it will paste the clipboard contents either:
    • Without the styles used in the document from which the text was copied.
    • In the same style as the document into which you are pasting the text.
Some apps, e.g. Microsoft Office, have an Edit > Paste Special menu choice that permits one to select that text should be pasted either without the styles or matching the style of your document.
In Mail, the keyboard shortcut is Command-Option-Shift-V.
Consult the Help for the particular application to determine how one can paste what is commonly called "styled text" without the styles. Styled text is text in the clipboard that retains the style of the document from which it was copied.
    Good luck!

I need the work finish in next monday. Thanks a lot.

Your line breaks will most likely be incorrect if you don't turn on the Japanese Composer.
It is almost absolutely impossible to accomplish your goal without having a font - any font - installed on your system that has that glyph. However, if it's showing up in Word, than means that you must have that glyph installed, right? What font are you trying to use in InDesign? You might already know that Word will auto-substitute fonts when it encounters a missing glyph, so we really don't know what font is being used to render that one glyph. The whole sentence might be in MS Mincho but one glyph might be pulled from another font if MS Mincho doesn't have that glyph.
That being said, you're going to break it if you don't know how to set Japanese type in ID. It's not something where you can just copy text out of email and paste into your English layout.

  • Firefox Sync setup says "Incorrect words, try again" after receiving message "Your answer was correct. Please copy and paste the text in this text box into the box below."

When setting up Firefox Sync, I get all the way to the "Please Confirm You're Not a Robot" screen in the wizard, and enter the captcha values. I then receive in a small scrollable text area the message "Your answer was correct. Please copy and paste the text in this text box into the box below."
I copy and paste the code, in this case "03AHJ_Vuv1gStVScBWSYWw6M4_KKQ4wzhCDSzKqiCfv57XXGyvHtOk4ixehysQhOTIf-lsL41lc5n-piztjYJSKu6urCeRvETVfpzRDh7OmHCDZiIBZv9Qg4oyrmWDMu6JA7Eh-4C8aZn4" into the only other visible text box, and click the next button, only to receive the message "Incorrect words, try again."
My only option is to cancel at that point. I have tried this three times, once even starting the entire process over from the start, and it ends up with the same outcome each time.

hi i can't seem to copy and paste pdf files from preview to a microsoft word document. it always comes up with nonsense characters in the word document. how do i fix this? thanks in advance

    Hi,
The quickest way to do this (tested with OS 10.8.2, MS Word 2011) is in one line:
tell application "Microsoft Word" to close every document whose name begins with "book"
The reason why your script doesn't work is that you aren't specifying to Word which document you want it to close.
So, changing one line ought to do it:
close document incrementvalue -- instead of "close document"
But... when you close a document, you change the document count. Document 2 becomes document 1, document 3 becomes document 2 etc. So eventually you'd get a message saying "The object you are trying to access doesn't exist".
Because of this, if you want to do it in a repeat loop, you have to work backwards:
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
      set doc_count to count documents
      repeat with x from doc_count to 1 by -1
if name of document x begins with "book" then close document x
      end repeat
    end tell
    Hope this helps.

Try just Opening the Word .doc from within Pages and see if that gets closer to what you want, then copy the chapter you want from the Pages version.

  • Freeze when copy paste text from word to Indesign CC

    Hi,
I have a problem when working with indesign CC. When i'm copying text from word to Indesign, after a while my windows system freezes. Only Indesign works. Windows and word are frozen. After a while (several minutes) the system works agian.
This problem occurs sinc I have Indesign CC.
Windows 8, indesign CC, Word 2013
I hope someone has a solution.
    Ragards Bas

    It's the PDF.
Usually, you can copy text out of a PDF, but there is no guarantee *at all*. Older software used to take shortcuts to subset fonts: first character it encountered got coded as #1, the next as #2, etc. etc. If you do a search & replace of each of the nonsense characters, you'll slowly see the original text appearing (thst's not as simple as it sounds, though).
A similar "problem" is that sometimes spaces don't get copied (there is no need for a "Space Character" in a PDF), and that you cannot copy contiguous lines of text as a single paragraph. All of it is because a PDF is not intended nor designed to be re-used after creation.
If you really need this text and don't want to type it in, try to get hold of the original file.
