Copy files from mounted pc volume to mac

Hi all,
I have a problem with the following script:
var xmlfile = File.openDialog("Choose XML");
var result = File(xmlfile).copy("~/Desktop/" + xmlfile.name);
This result is false (can't be copied) when the file is an a mounted PC Volume. (/Users/Public/Documents/)
In applescript this works fine:
tell application "Finder"
     set xmlfile to (choose file)
     move xmlfile to desktop
end tell
The source is on the same Volume.
Does javascript have a problem with accessing remote volumes?
Can someone help?
Kind regards,
Michel

  • Can't copy files from mounted DMG. What's up??

So all of a sudden, I can't copy files from mounted DMG files. It's strange because if there is one file and I drag it to another location, like desktop, it won't copy. If I drag 2 files from the mounted DMG to the desktop one of them copies. If I drag 3, then 2 copy... it's always all but one of the files... never all of them.
I've tried repairing permissions but nothing works. I'm at a loss...
    thanks

Try holding option when you drag the files. This tells the mac to move the files to the desktop of your computer not the desktop folder of the DMG (usually a hidden folder)
If that doesn't work it may be that you need administrative privileges to move the files. Make sure you are logged on as as an administrator by selecting the account tab in system preferences and making sure it says "admin" under your user name. Log on to or create an administration account then try moving the file.
Hope this helps, let me know

  • Copy files from mounted server

I am new to ARD. I am used to using Timbuktu. In Timbuktu I can choose exchange files, and get a list that I can browse, including any attached drives and mounted volumes. I can navigate right to the file I want, and then copy it.
I cant seem to find a easy way to browse files in ARD. I can do a search for files, but even then I can seem to be able to just browse files from a mounted volume.
Is there any way to do this in ARD?

Sorry, but there is no file browser in ARD (other than taking control of a system and browsing through it's own Finder). You have to search for a file, either with the File Search or, if the clients are running Mac OS X, a Spotlight search.

  • Copy file from mounted DMG to the Applications folder?

I'm wanting to copy file (application) from a mounted DMG to the Applications folder. Something like:
    tell application "Finder"
    try
    copy "Volumes:Dropbox Installer:Dropbox.app" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications"
    end try
    end tell
    (But that doesn't work).
Preferably overwriting the existing application in that folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    tell application "Finder"
duplicate file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" with replacing
    end tell
I tried this principle in Applescript (Mavericks) and received error...
Finder got an error: Can’t set folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" to file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip".
"001TEST" is a disk image with filename of "S001TEST.dmg"
Any ideas why this won't work?

  • Copying file from mounted disc image.

    Hi
I'm trying to copy a file from a mounted .iso file but it says i don't have permission to do so ( error code -39).
Is there any way around this?
    Thanks in advance.
    George.

Its a folder containg many files, most of which it copies fine then it gets to one particular file and the copying stops giving the following error.
' The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Session Strings Pro020.nkx” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36) '
My mistake it's error code -36!
I've tried copying to my internal and external harddrives.
The file that fails to copy is 1.05gb it copies just 250mb of it before stopping.

  • Copying files from AppleTV back to my mac

I'm going to synch my entire itunes library to my AppleTV. Just curious if anything were to ever happen to my mac's hardrive, is there a way to copy my itunes library from my AppleTV back to my mac?
    Thanks.

Actually, it's very possible. In fact I just did it. You do have to either have AFP access active or you have to pull the AppleTV drive and mount the "Media" volume on your Mac.
I was able to copy the entire "Media Files" directory to my Mac and then import it all back into iTunes. Not sure how, but even though in the AppleTV all the files are named oddly, like "BHCL.mp3" they all show up fine in iTunes and mostly got renamed from the embedded id3 tag info.
I've not figured out how to reconstitute the playlists, as I haven't found how they are stored on the AppleTV, but at least I got all my music back.
And, YES you should backup your music, but failing that, the AppleTV isn't a bad emergency repository... provided it's fully synced at the time of the HD crash.
    Good luck!

  • Is there a conflict in copying files from windows to formatted for mac ED.

I am going to format a large external drive for mac to house my movie files under advice of several helpful people here. When I format this drive the am I going to have problems copying the files back to it from my windows pc????
I had already backed my movies and photos' to the drive....but formatting will delete them.
    Any feedback appreciated!

To begin with, I've arranged to have your post moved from the Solaris 11 forum to the Solaris 9 forum.
That's the closest arena for questions involving a system running Solaris 8, as you stated in the title of your post.
I think you have a Filezilla issue, not an OS issue.
It's been a very long time since I needed to investigate deep into Filezilla's settings but I recall there's some various choices as to 8-dot-3 versus long-file-name compatibilities.
My various systems with Filezilla installed don't have your issue and they're all installed with what I vaguely remember as its program defaults. When I use the program it is ALWAYS to transfer files back and forth between MSWin and *NIX systems.
You might think about searching for hints and solutions on Filezilla forums/blogs/wikis instead these forums here.

  • Can I copy files from Time Machine to another Mac (or flash drive, etc)?

I hosed my hard drive yesterday (dropped the MBP on a hard floor).  Fortunately, I have a TM backup that was done only an hour or so before the accident.  It will take me a couple of days to get a new HD and install it, so I'm wondering if it will mess up the TM backup if I copy some of the files onto another system so I can continue stuff I need to do until I can restore the system.
I do *not* intend to do any work, change files, etc on the backup drive, just want to work on them on another system, then copy back *after* the MBP is restored and functional.
    Thanks,
    Chuck

That is very useful info!  Thanks.  I have a new drive in and the TM restore went fine, so I'm in business again.
So you are saying that this method will not damage TM access to the backup file, as for example in needing to do a complete restore?
    Thanks again,
    Chuck

  • Can't copy files from NTFS volume with Read Only permissions?

I am trying to copy files from an NTFS volume used previously for Windows onto another volume which is Mac OS X Extended...
However, certain files fail to copy due to the fact that I 'don't have permission to access some of the items'...
So I found the items which are causing the issue and viewed the permissions for them which display as 'You can only read'... I presume I am correct taking these as read-only permissions which (to my knowledge) should allow the files/folders to be copied accross to a new volume assuming that the existing volume is left without any changes attempted.
So can anyone suggest to me why this is? And how I might rectify the issue?
    Thanks in advance

Ok I've just worked out that 'You can only read' is referring to the fact that I can only view permissions but not add any. Below this statement, no permissions are listed which may explain why I cannot access the files but does not explain why I can copy/access some files, also with no permissions...

  • Unable to copy files from mac to PC

    Hi,
I have a mac (osx 10.6.3) and a PC (Windows Vista) connected to my local home network. On the PC there are some shared folders. I can connect to the PC using the "connect to server" dialog and I can get all those PC folders mounted in my desktop (apparently in read/write mode). Dragging files from the PC to my mac works nicely but, surprisingly, there is no way to drag files from my mac to the pc.
When I drag a file from my mac to PC I'm always getting a dialog asking me to introduce my password to "allow Finder to make changes". I think it makes no sense because Finder should make no changes at all to copy a file to the PC and, on the other hand, I've read/write permissions on those files. After typing my password I get a second dialog: "One or more items can’t be copied to “Movies” because you don’t have permission to read them. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?". Again, it makes no sense because I do have read/write permissions on those files. Unfortunately, any file is transferred after clicking "continue". This behavior is independent of file size, file type and permissions. No way to get any file transferred to the PC. What I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi, paullopez.
Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, in my previous post, I forgot to comment that I had macFuse and ntfs-3g already installed in my mac. I wonder if the problem is related to the osx implementation of SAMBA. Or, alternatively, ntfs-3g may be not able to work with samba mounted volumes? I have very little experience in sharing files via SAMBA so any help is welcomed.

  • Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.

Copying files from Mac to PC network shared drives.
We have shared mounted drives in AIX Fusion that we can pull files from and copy to the mac, however we can not copy files from the mac to the drives.
“Error in user parameter list (-50)” With MS DOS-Formatted Volume.”
The drives are mapped on the mac using SMB. We can go to the files on the mac and use “save as” and this works and saves them on the shared drives.
We can not drag and copy them to the shared drives. Every time it fails and we get the above error. We can create folders but not move any files.
When we look up the error, it is referring to certain characters that can but used in a Max OS X filename and are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. We are not using any of the characters not allowed.
The drives have all the basic set up in AIX, RWC. All the PC's we have can drag files to and from all our shared drives.

Either install software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives, or MacDrive on the PC, or reformat any drives you'll be using to share files between the computers as either FAT32 or exFAT.

How did you copy files to the external drive, and what files did you copy? Did you drag and drop in the Finder? Use a clone utility? What files did not successfully copy?
If you reformatted the drive as part of your install, then you won't be able to recover any files from the drive. Reverting back to (reinstalling) 10.4 will not help you.
Do you have a complete-drive backup of your old system?

The only thing is we need to buy this software. if there is a free solution to inter change files between NTFS and HFS it would be better,
Don't use NTFS, remove your data off it first and change the format to something the Mac and PC can read, but doens't cost money or require software.

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.

Use the Migration Assistant, or the Setup Assistant, or use a network, Target Disk mode, or an external drive to move them manually.
