Copy of Mac OS 9

I just purchased a computer for my mother and she and her children will be using it (everyday). I was thinking of backing up the Hard Drive (it had a clean install) so that when a problem arises I can restore it to its original state. I wanted to know how to make the CD bootable and if there was anything else I should know.
Thanx,
Jordan

When you mean bootable from CD I think you mean you want the mac to start from the CD and not from the hard drive so then you can perform a backup?
If so, insert the OS 9 disk, restart your Mac when you hear the 'boing' hold down your C key to boot from the OS 9 disk.

I feel like I should know the answer to this. I can't believe it is a hard question.

    Easy? Right?
Just plug my iphone in to a mac and copy a photo from the mac to my iphone.
I don't have internet access - I can't email it, or mobileme it, or dropbox it.

iTunes. Other than that there is no direct method. However, do try the iPhone forums.

  • How to format and install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.6.4, with another MacBook CD, because i lost the one that came with mine, thanks.

Dear user, can i format and install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.6.4, with another MacBook CD, because i lost the one that came with mine, thanks.

As you need to be on 10.6 to be able access the App Store to download Lion, either get replacement discs via Applecare (you'll need the MBP's serial number to get the right ones) or get the SL retail disc. I would recommend the Original disc replacement set (assuming they were 10.6) as they carry not onlyApple Hardware Test for your model, but the iLife apps other bundled sftware that isn't on the retail disc.
Once you've installed, and used Software Update to get to 10.6.8, you can then get Lion if you're feeling masochistic.

  • I have a unwrapped copy of Mac OSX Tiger and i don't know what to do with it

    Hey everyone,
So i don't have a Macpowerbook and i have a copy of mac osx tiger. It was originally my mom's dad's. How ever he has passed away and my mom's mom wants us to sell the osx tiger. What should i do?

If it is a grey colored disc then it is machine specific and only useful to somebody who has the machine model for which it was made.  If it is black then it is a retail install disc.
2 years ago you could have sold a retail disc at a premium price.  Now I am not so sure.  Tiger is now 4th generation behind Lion, Snow Leopard and Leopard.  Apple stopped supporting Tiger years ago and fewer and fewer other software packages are being issued that still run on Tiger.  Firefox stopped supporting Tiger, Flash (used on just about every web site out there) is no longer being updated, etc.  I think the writing is on the wall.  One of my favorite web sites that uses Flash stopped working for me yesterday.
A machine specific disc is really handy for somebody who has that machine and completely useless to anybody who doesn't.
The best thing to do is go on e-bay and see what is actually being paid (not asked) for Tiger, remembering to make sure it matches the copy you have.  If you do decide to sell it, make sure you tell the purchaser exactly which model disc it is.  We've seen many people on here who bought a disc only to find it wouldn't install on their computer.

  • Where can I get a copy of MAC OSX 10.4 to install?

I am trying to install Maya 6 on my mac and I get the error that my computer is too new... where can I get a copy of MAC OSX 10.4 to install? I have an old powerPC that I could put this on instead of my newer computer. My company does not have to resources to upgrade the copy of Maya at the moment, so this is my best option.

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1976068 Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac?
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521  http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD. It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US

You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide

When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710 Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • How do I copy the Mac OS Lion after upgrading?

How do I copy the Mac OS Lion after upgrading. I upgraded to OS Lion and now I want to do clean install because my macbook became slower since i installed lion.
    Please, help! Thanks.

You need to get on a Snow Leopard system, log into the App Store with your Apple ID, then download the Lion installer. The re-download is free. After the installer is downloaded it will start automatically. Now, quit the installer. You can now make a copy of the installer that you will find in the Applications folder.
Now, you also may be able to get this to work: Open the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key while clicking on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. This is supposed to activate the Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. Clicking the Install button will then re-download the Lion installer.

  • Where can I find a retail copy of MAC OSX Snowleopard, that has all the drivers, for both desktop and Laptops?

Where can I find a retail copy of MAC OSX Snowleopard, that has all the drivers, for both desktop and Laptops?

No. 10.6.3 was the last retail release of Snow Leopard. Download the 10.6.8 Combo updater and put it on a flash drive to make it easier to install the largest part of the update.
Also, don't push the same disk image of SL to your Macs unless they are exactly the same model as it was originally installed on. The wrong hardware drivers will otherwise be in use.

  • Cannot copy from Mac formatted disks to PC Fat32 disks anymore!

    HElp!
Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6, everything I copied from Mac disks to Fat disks always went well.
Few weeks later, I ran Disk Utility in 10.6.2 and "repaired" all my drives including my Fat disks.
At the end of the repair, it said everything was OK and the last sentence of the report said (which I do not remember exactly) said something like it did some changes and finishes that sentense with "...as required" (French OS says: "tel que requis")
That made me a little suspiscious but everything went fine so i did not pay any more attention.
Now I realize that since then, it is impossible for me to copy from Mac Disks to Pc Disks. I receive an (Error -36) ???
What did DiskUtility did as "required" modification?
I need these Fat partitions since I often carry stuff to PC.

    K T wrote:
    I receive an (Error -36) ???
-36 is a software permissions error only. No indication of any hardware issues, failures, etc.
no it's not. you've been told this several times. error -36 has nothing to do with permissions.
What did DiskUtility did as "required" modification?
Most likely it felt the need to repair the drive's index - perhaps it was confused by the non-mac format, tho.
I would format them using Disk Utility via Snow Leopard and try again.

  • How/Where can I purchase a copy of Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion"?

How can I purchase a copy of Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion"? I need it to upgrade a Mac Pro 1,1 running Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard"? Thanks.

    FWIW:
http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=MacPro1,1* shows specs for MacPro 1.1.
According to http://support.apple.com/kb/SP629 Lion can run on a Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor.
According to http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/ Mtn Lion requires Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer).

  • Where can i get a copy of MAC OS X 10.3

where can i get a copy of MAC OS X 10.3 I am refurbishing my Power PC Imac and have misplaced my old disc's..Thanks

eBay.  You should get a "retail" copy (which came on three CDs not one DVD), black with a big silver X.  Don't get a copy that came with a particular Mac model (grey color), unless it happens to be the disc that came with your particular Mac model.
You may want to consider getting Tiger (10.4) instead, if your Mac supports it.  Tiger provides better software compatibility with more recent applications, compared to Panther.
If your Mac is a G4 or G5, 867 Mhz or faster, with at least 512mb of RAM, Leopard (10.5) is also supported.
NOTE:  Leopard does not have "Classic" mode for running Mac OS 9 apps.  Tiger (and earlier) does.

  • Cannot open FreeHand MX files after copying between Macs

When I copy a FreeHand MX file from one Mac to another, on the new Mac it appears as a "unix executable file" and will not open in FreeHand. Even if I change the Get Info to open in FreeHand, it will open FreeHand, but the file does not open.
I can't help but wonder if this has something to do with FreeHand not having a file extension to identify its files?
Has anyone encountered this, or can suggest a way to get my FreeHand files to open? At times I've not noticed the issue and copied the file back over the original when trying to sync the Macs. This results in complete loss of all my work in the FreeHand file!
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well, the execute bit was set, but unfortunately fixing it didn't solve the problem. I went as far as making sure all the copied files had exactly the same permissions as files I've create on the same machine (-rw-r--r--), but opening the file still does nothing but launch FreeHand.
This problem seems to happen when I copy from Mac to Mac over our office network. I have a Mac-formatted USB drive, and I think it doesn't happen when I use that, which is why the problem is inconsistent enough that I sometimes accidently overwrite original files. Curiously, when I connect between these two Macs in the office, one direction (laptop to desktop) acts like I'm connecting to a PC--it has the same three-unit connect window, and claims the desktop is part of "WORKGROUP". This can probably explain why the execute bit got set. (Could this have something to do with how they connect the work computers to the network?)
Unfortunately while this was a true feature of the files, fixing it still has not helped. Any other suggestions?
    Thanks

I have license for photoshop CS5 extended for windows , I have switched to mac , can  I install the same license copy on mac ?

Unfortunately, no. the CS programs are platform specific. You have three options. Upgrade to CS6 and request a platform swap, in which case you will give up the Windows serial number. Second, you could buy a second serial number for Mac outright. Third, you can buy the subscription to Photoshop CC, which can be used on both Windows and Macintosh..

  • Should I keep my copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

I have recently upgraded to Mac OS X Lion which I am very happy with and have no compatibility issues.  I have a retail copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and was wondering whether it would be wise to sell it?  My understanding is you need Snow Leopard to upgrade to Lion so if I ever have any issues in the future will I still need my copy of Snow Leopard?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Personally I would keep it.

OS X errors are cryptic. error code -50 says error in user parameter list.

What is WD for Mac? If it's an external drive - did you install any software for it? (shouldn't need to)
How much free space on the Mac HD? Size of the file(s)?
Is it a USB drive or Firewire or Thunderbolt?

  • Obtaining a (legal!) copy of Mac OS 9.1

    Hello there,
I am trying to source a copy of Mac OS 9.1 for my beloved Macintosh Performa 5200, which I would like to eventually give to charity. However, if I can get Mac OS 9.1 on there before I do so, that would be great, because then the machine will be running the most up to date version of the Mac OS that it will support.
I have had a look here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1835
which informs me that this machine will not run Mac OS 9.2.1 (or any subsequent versions). This site:
    http://lowendmac.com/ppc/performa-5200.html
    has also been quite useful.
However, trying to source a legal copy of Mac OS 9.1 has been much harder than I expected. Does anyone know of somewhere I can source a copy of Mac OS 9.1 cheaply? I'm based in London, England UK. The reason for me wanting to keep costs down is because I shall shortly be giving this machine away. My Performa 5200 is currently booting System 7.5.3. I contacted Apple Support via telephone, but Apple Legacy wasn't able to help me. One thing I haven't done is pop in to my local Apple Store to ask their advice, which is something I shall do if I cannot obtain a copy via this discussion group.
    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Don,
First, thanks very much for the response and the help. Seemed to me like what you said made sense so I attempted to reboot from the OS9.0.4 Software Install disc and reinstall.
Booting up worked, but the OS would not recognize my hard drive and kept asking if I wanted to Initialize it or Eject it (I continually opted for Eject). The software installation began but failed just when it was about to end because, the error message said, the volume wasn't a valid disc (or something like that) and then the icon for the hard drive disappeared from the desktop. Rebooting didn't help -- I could get the mac to boot off the 0S9.0.4 Software Install disc but could not get the DVD OS to access the hard drive. I knew it had to be there, because I hadn't asked the computer to erase or write over anything. I also couldn't access OSX on reboot. The only thing I could do was reboot using the OS9.0.4 disc to boot from.
Without access to internet to inquire further, I opted to do the following (and now have a whole new set of problems on my hands to ask about):
I installed OS9.0.4 onto my hard drive from the Software Restore disc instead -- I know you said not to, but I could boot off of that disc as well, and -- for whatever reason -- it would at least allow me to install onto the hard disc (not sure why it could "see" the hard disc but the Software Install disc could not -- even on repeat tries).
In any case, what the process did was take my existing hard disc (which I had named Barbarella) and "cloak" it in a new OSX Macintosh HD "environment". I ran the 9.1.5 updater and then my OSX update discs and performed the recommended software downloads/installs to bring the OS back up to OSX 10.3.9.
At least this installation of OSX can access Classic. But now I have to "get rid of" the older OSX installation and apps and reinstall them (yuck) or bring all my existing OSX apps into the new environment somehow. I tried using the "new" Apple Mail to import all my stuff from the Apple mail I had installed on Barbarella and it only picked up most of the messages and didn't acquire any of my Sent messages.
What's the best way out of a situation like this? Have I made an irrevocable error?
Thanks, very much, by the way for the help. I am otherwise at a loss.
