Copy/Paste duplicates graphic styles

Scenario: Start with a named graphic style of say 2 pt black stroke/no fill called '2.0 pt'. Create an object using said style, copy and paste it, every time I do this I get '2.0 pt 1', '2.0 pt 2', '2.0 pt 3' etc. insanely populating my graphic styles panel. Anybody else experience this behaviour or is it just my set up and something I have to troubleshoot?
This is with CS6 (16.0.4) running on Mac OS X.6.8
Any help, much appreciated
Les

Yeah, sorry about that, tried to edit my post to reflect that I was in the wrong forum but the forum software said I didn't have permission to edit my own post! weird. And yes I'm talking about Illustrator.

  • Copying a path creates a duplicate graphic style

When copying a path by using the the menu commands, if there is any graphic style associated with that path, a duplicate graphic style will be made.  We deal with copying hundreds of lines.  As a result, we are left with hundreds of graphics styles that are duplicates.  This slows the program down by a significant amount.  Is there any fix to this?  We do use the ALT shortcut when we can, which does not create duplicate graphic styles. But, there are some instances where this cannot be used.

I'm going to take a guess here - if you create a brand new document and do not paste anything into it, but create a path, apply a Graphic Style, then copy and paste that path, you do not see this problem right?
If that is correct, then my guess is that you frequently work with files where some of the content was created in a much older version of Illustrator and you should refer to this knowledge base article to see if it can help: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408008.html

  • Copy-Paste/Duplicate files in finder doesn't work

    Hello Everyone!
I am trying to duplicate a file in Finder, but it seems I cannot do it.
I can do cmd+C/cmd+V or duplicat through cmd+D but two things can happen:
    - The copied file is shown in grey and I cannot open it
    - The copied file is shown for a fraction of a second and then it disappears
Please note that it works for VERY small files (under 1k)
...and my permissions are OK, just verified and corrected!

BTW If I create a new user on the computer the system works!

  • Do not duplicate the graphic style when you copy and paste a feature

I rely heavily on the use of graphic styles.  However, when I copy and paste a feature that has a graphic style assigned to it, a duplicate of the graphic style is created.  I sometimes end up with a large number of these duplicate graphic styles that I have to trash.  This does not happen with the selection tool+alt shortcut for copying.  However, I can't use this shortcut when I want to paste in front or paste in back, which is the case at least half the time.

Only advice I can offer is Option Left cursor, then right cursor, to make an exact copy in same position.
This will give you a clone as the action does form the previosu poster, but unfortunately no oslution for when you want to target layers.
If anyone else has any input on this here is how to reproduc:
New document, create a graphic style (eg: fill yellow, stroke none) and save
    Close the document
    Open the document
copy and paste the element with the graphic style, and with every paste multiplies faster than a tribble on Star Trek
I played with changing the clipboard options, no luck. Exists on CS4 Mac, CS5 Mac & PC, might go back as far as graphic styles do.

  • How to duplicate calendar events copy paste?

I am trying to build my schedule on calendars with my iPad. I would like to put in my work schedule but I don't work the same days every week. I am looking for a way to copy paste/duplicate entries so I don't have to keep inputting them. Because I don't work the same days each week/month I can't use the repeat feature. I have tried a long press to copy and paste but it moves the whole event and doesn't duplicate it. Is there a way to do this? I have found that I can do this on my Macbook Pro in iCal and then it updates the iPad through iCloud but I would like to do it with my iPad because I have the iPad and iPhone with me all the time and the Macbook stays at home.

As you know by now, there is now way to copy and paste (drag and drop duplicate) iPad Calendar events. However, I have found a workaround that allows you to duplicate an event and place the duplicates in various dates on your Calendar. NOTE: This is probably not too practical for making a single copy, but it does save time and keystrokes for multiple copies.  In Calendar, tap on the event you want to duplicate and select Edit. In the Edit window select Repeat. In the Repeat window select Every Day, then tap Done to take you back to the Edit menu.  Tap End Repeat and select an end date that will give you the number of copies you want (e.g., if the original event date is 11/12 and you want 5 copies, select 11/17 as the End Repeat date.  Tap Done twice to return to the Calendar. Then just drag the Repeats/Copies to the various dates where you want them placed (works best in Month view). When you finish each drag/drop, you will get a "This is a repeating event" pop-up window; you need to select "Save for this event only."

  • Can I copy and apply title style edits?  Or save them to favorites?

I'm doing a slideshow in iMove and I have a lot of titles. Is there a way to copy and paste a style or save an altered title to a favorites list? I've started with one of the stock title styles but altered the font, kerning, leading, color, transparancy, etc... But I don't want to do this every time for every title. Can I copy and paste the "graphic style" like I can with photos in iWeb?

I am not aware of a way to do this with copy/paste. Copy and paste in iMovie allows you to copy video adjustments or sound adjustments to other clips.
One way to help accomplish what you are looking to do would be to create your title slides in a new project called title templates. When you start a new project, you can right-click (control-click) on the project name in the project source list, and select Duplicate. Now you have a new project ready to go with your title already in it.
Similarly, you could take your existing project with the title you like. Duplicate the project. Then delete everything except the title. This could be your template.

  • How do you keep strokes, etc, from changing when copying & pasting?

I am sure there is a simple solution to this problem, but I cannot figure it out and could use some help.  I have a graphic in one InDesign document (ID CS4 - using Windows XP Pro) and when I try to copy and paste it into another ID doc, it completely changes the strokes and fills.  It usually does the opposite of what is in the graphic (this happens with every graphic I try this with).  So if I have a circle that is stroke only, when I copy and paste it, it comes in with no stroke and a fill.  I have to use these graphics between documents frequently and some of them are complicated, making it difficult to spend the time correcting this problem.  When I tried adding the graphic to a library, it did the same thing.  It also changed it when I moved one page to another document.  Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening and how to make it stop?
    Thanks,
    GS

Thanks for the reply.  While it wasn't the preferences, I did find a link on the link you included in your answer that led me to the solution.
The problem was conflicting object styles.  The solution was to load the object style from the doc that included the graphic into the doc that I wanted to place the graphic in.  Then when I copy & paste, the graphic comes in perfectly.  The only problem is if there are other graphics in that doc, but now that I know there is an issue with object styles, I can pay attention to it as I design.
I can always count on the forum for great answers!

  • Copy/Paste graphic w/drop shadow to indesign - loses transparency

See above image.. I made a vector version of our company logo in illustrator (all programs referenced are cs5 btw) and it looks great, but when I copy and paste from Illustrator to InDesign, it loses the transparency around the logo. If I place the logo instead, it works fine. The trouble is there are about 16 variations of the logo, and its MUCH easier to copy/paste from one aggregate file instead of having many different logo files to place.
Background on how the logo was created: The inner circle area is multiple different gradient layers (some with transparency masks as well). The white line around the outside is an expanded stroke, and it had a drop shadow effect applied (Stylize menu), which I expanded so it would scale properly when scaling the logo up and down. Here is a link to download the logo: download logo
Q: Is there any way to make InDesign preserve the transparency when I copy and paste?
Would be eternally grateful if someone has a solution that allows me to copy/paste!

I agree with Bob's suggestion to use separate "layer groups" in your logo file for different styles. I also use separate layers inside InDesign to "multi-purpose" company documents with different backgrounds, graphics, and content. But that's the only way I use layers inside InDesign – Not for general placement of image files! I also disagree with ability to copy and paste graphics from Illustrator with drop shadow. Here's an .ai logo which I quickly added Drop Shadow to in Illustrator CS4, and then a Copy and Paste into InDesign CS4 document. Best workflow practice is to 'Place' image files as Bob suggests, linking them from a separate file folder.
For something "quick and dirty" I see no problem with Copy and Paste, but your success may vary based on OS, and CS versions you are using!  Sometimes it is wiser to take a few shortcuts to hit rather than miss that deadline!

  • Graphic Styles multiplying when objects are copied

I have some groups containing lines with graphic styles. Sometimes, when I copy and paste these groups I get new graphic styles with name plus the number 1, 2, 3...
    E.g. "Foo" -> "Foo 1", later "Foo 1" -> "Foo 2"
Do you know how to avoid this happening?

That could help - but it seems that it would kill your CS5 specific stuff if you opened the file up in an earlier version?
Is that not true? Would I lose any other data?
I tried bcl5462's comment below but the import into cs4 failed completely (I get a "PDF Objects that have been Reinterpreted error" and none of my original document remains), and I'm not sure if it even deals with graphic styles (from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408008.html )
Open the file with Illustrator CS5 (trial)
From Window > Actions, "Delete Unused Panel Items"
Also - try clicking on the brushes panel and selecting all unused brushes - delete.
Select all unused swatches and delete.
    Save the file.
Open the file with an older version of Illustrator (e.g. Illustrator CS3)
This will inform you the file was saved in a newer version of Illustrator and the file will be imported.
In this process Illustrator CS3 will not import the corrupted brushes or swatches.
    Save the cleaned file.

  • [AS] Copy/Paste graphics

    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can help... l'm trying to copy/paste graphics from one document to another.
I've been doing this my getting the file path of item link of graphic 1 and then setting this value to the frame on the other document - then setting the offset etc to move it to the correct place - which works great. (see below code)
The problem l've got it sometimes the original graphic file doesn't exists so it does not work - what l want to do is then copy the 'preview' image you see on the document and paste that in the box on the other document - just like a normal copy/paste
Any ideas on a nice way of doing this?
This is my current copy/paste methods l talked about:
    on copyItem(boxName)
         try
         tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
              set myCopyDocument to active document
              set proceed to false
              tell myCopyDocument
set theSelection to graphic 1 of page item boxName
set theTarget to parent of theSelection
set FilePathOfImage to file path of item link of graphic 1 of theTarget
set {a, b, c, d} to geometric bounds of theSelection
set {w, x, y, z} to geometric bounds of theTarget
                   set xOff to a - w
                   set yOff to b - x
              end tell
              return {true, FilePathOfImage, xOff, yOff}
         end tell
         on error msg
display dialog "Can not copy original image: " & msg
              return {false, "", 0, 0}
         end try
    end copyItem
    on pasteItem(boxName, FilePathOfImage, xOff, yOff)
         tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
          try
              tell myPasteDocument
set myImage to place FilePathOfImage on page item boxName
set {a, b, c, d} to geometric bounds of myImage
                   set geometric bounds of myImage to {a + xOff, b + yOff, c + xOff, d + yOff}
              end tell
         on error msg
display dialog "Can not place original image: " & msg
         end try
         end tell
    end pasteItem
    Regards, Gary.

Worked out a way of doing it with the following:
    property myDocuments : {}
    set boxName to "pic1"
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"
        -- Source
set MyRectangles to page item boxName of document 1
set MyRectangle to item 1 of MyRectangles
set thePage to parent of MyRectangle
set thePageNumber to name of thePage
        -- Target
set MyTargetRectangles to page item boxName of document 2
set MyTargetRectangle to item 1 of MyTargetRectangles
set theTargetPage to parent of MyTargetRectangle
set theTargetPageNumber to name of theTargetPage
set {y, x, l, h} to geometric bounds of MyTargetRectangle
        -- Duplicate onto document 2
set MyTargetRectangleCopy to duplicate MyRectangle to page theTargetPageNumber of document 2
        -- Delete old target
        delete MyTargetRectangle
-- Move new target to old targets place
        move MyTargetRectangleCopy to {x, y}
    end tell

  • Pages Copy & Paste Style Buttons don't change font size and style?

Shouldn't the font size and style also be copied and pasted when I use the buttons to copy & paste the style within a page?

    Hello
It seems that the description of these buttons in the Help is not clear.
After several attempts, one may understand that they don't apply to attributes inserted "by hand" with cmd + B for instance but to "styles" defined in the Styles drawer.

  • How to copy and paste vector graphics

I have a program that draws curves and I would like to copy and paste them as a path into Adobe Photoshop.
I am using the Clipboard class (Clipboard clipboard = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getSystemClipboard()), but I
do not know what string I should use for the StringSelection argument in the setContents method. I tried the
string that describes my curves in PostScript.
But that didn't even work for pasting into Adobe Illustrator, although Illustrator is capable of opening
a PostScript file. (However Photoshop only opens a PostScript file as a bitmap, not as a path.)
With Illustrator, instead of pasting the curves, it just pasted the PostScript text.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

For me, freehep is the fifth hit when googling "java vector graphics library". But of course I don't get to "[Access hidden information|http://www.copernic.com/en/products/agent/index.html]" without paying up :).
For a simpler way: since you already say you can save to postscript, make a temporary ps file and export it in a file list (keywords "java drag and drop files"). Perhaps Illustrator then opens the file and the user can copy/paste it there. Otherwise you have to figure out what Illustrator expects on the clipboard and put it there in the same format.
Another option might be to use some com wrapper to talk to Illustrator directly (but probably need a commercial com wrapper for that).

  • Copy/Paste Style not working consistently in iOS Pages

I cannot figure out what is going on with iOS Pages Copy/Paste Styles.
Sometimes it works, but often it doesn't. I copy a style, and then select the text I want to paste the style to, and the 'paste style" option doesn't appear. It's as if no style was copied in the first place. Tried multiple times with the same result.
Also, it is not really clear to me WHAT is included in iOS Pages styles. It appears the font and size is included, but not the color. Not sure about other elements (line spacing, etc.). Is this described completely someplace?

You are not doing, something wrong. I have the same problem.
    Past Style, disappears ....
This must be a BUG, in Pages, after the latest update.
Had zero problem, with this before.
Have to over and over again turn off iPad and restart it.
    Very, very annoying!
