Copying and Converting to DNG

Using Lightroom 3 beta 2, when importing raw files to both a primary location and a secondary backup location, using "Copy and Convert to DNG". the files are copied to the primary location as DNG, but NOT to the secondary location where they are copied as NEF (Nikon) files. Shouldn't they be copied as DNG to both locations, or am I missing something?

I think the idea behind keeping your files as NEFs is that LR is archiving the original. That wouldn't be the case if it were converted to DNG at that point.

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

Trouble with CR2 and converting to DNG

I am new at using camera raw files. I recently got a Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D as well as Adobe Lightroom 3. I tried loading my CR2 files into Lightroom by "copying as DNG." Once I did this, the program said "the files are from a camera which is not recognized by the raw format support in lightroom." I then tried downloading the latest DNG converter from Adobe.com to convert my files, but this program also said "the source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files." The third route I tried was loading my photos into brindge directly from my camera and checking "convert to DNG." This did not work either. When I looked on Adobe's website, I saw that Camera Raw 6.3 should be downloaded for Lightroom 3, but it is not compatable with CS4. I did not do this because I did not want to interfere with the other CS4 programs and I am not sure if this has anything to do with it (I have camera raw 5.7 I beleive) I have also tried saving my photos to my computer, then importing them, as well as directly importing them from the camera into Lightroom.
Can anyone help me with this? LIke I said, I am very new to using camera raw and Lightroom and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Almost certainly. I suspect the file got truncated. The header info is there, but it looks like most of the image data is just missing.
Buy some new good quality media and do not trust the card these images came off of until you can verify them. Even if the media is suspect, a card reader might have better luck extracting all the data, so just put the media away and look at it later.
I've said it before, but it bears repeating. It isn't about /if/ your media or hard drive will fail, but /when/. Flash media is tricky because it can go bad in really inconvenient ways like this. Pro cameras are starting to accept dual media so you can at least have a JPEG copy on the other media if the raw write fails. But, as suggested elsethread, ALWAYS format the media in-camera so that the firmware on the card can spread the writes out over the entire card over time, and map out bad spots as they occur. And they always occur. Flash media starts to fail the moment we buy it and stick it in the camera.

Copying and Converting Automation

If i make some automation up for say volume contol, and then would like to use the same drawing to use on the filter of the same synth, how is it done?
I did a search in the manual but couldnt find anything, but i know it can be done.......

you can copy the automation by holding down option and double clicking in the background of the track automation. this selects all automation for that track. then you can use the copy and paste commands (control C and control V) to copy and paste into the other automation spot.
if you only want to copy from a certain point in the song, hold option and click on the first automation node from where you want to copy and it will select it and all after it.

Automation Folder, Automation Event Editor, Automation copy and paste help

Hello. I have been reading the copy and paste automation threads and I still have a few questions. First, thanks to whoever posted the option double-click on track background to select all visible automation for that track. Also, thanks to whoever posted the option click an automation node to select all following visible automation nodes.
Now, how do you select the middle 10 automation nodes in a track with 30 nodes? Many people have stated that the answer is a rubberband selection. This does not work for me. When I click and drag on the track background using the pointer Logic thinks I'm trying to create a new automation node. When I click and drag on the track background using the marquee tool Logic selects the audio and automation data. Then it only pastes the audio only even though I have "move automation with regions" set to ask.
Some people have recommended the automation folder. When I open the Automation Event Editor and click on the tiny rectangle in the upper left corner I just get a short list of the automation data. Is this right? If so, how do I select the data I want and paste it to another track? Because when I select the automation data for a track and copy nothing seems to happen when I paste.
Any automation gurus out there willing to help? Please and thank you in advance.

Hello Pete. Thanks again. It's odd that something so potentially useful is so hard to get to. I guess that is what people are referring to when they say that Logic has a steep learning curve. Is there another way to get to the automation folder? I think that it should have it's own item in the windows menu instead of sharing it with the arrange window and being contextual.
The copy and paste in the automation folder (automation arrange seems more appropriate as I cannot figure where the folder is) does not work as I expected. For instance, when I select volume automation from a track then option drag it to the pan automation of another, it still copies it to the volume automation. I then have to command click volume then switch to pan and select copy and convert, which makes it MIDI, which you say is not recommended. Will you tell me why TBA (and I assume RBA) is preferred over MIDI based automation? What is the difference exactly? Thank you so much for your assistance.

How come no voice memo files show up when I go into my iPhone via My Computer? All it shows are the videos and pictures in the DCIM folder, but not the voice memos. Is there another way to access the voice memos other than through iTunes?

Email it to yourself, then save the file and then see if you can convert it to MP3.

It depends upon the restrictions set on the pdf.
If the creator of the pdf has set restrictions against copying then you will not be able to copy the content.
Are you facing the same issue with all the pdf's?
Would it be possible to share the pdf with me.

I use Acrobat to convert firefox pages to pdf and with firefox4 I need to be able to copy and pasted text from the pdf and no longer can.

With the prior version of Firefox I could convert web pages (financial data) to pdf for maintaining historical files. And then with the pdf, I was able to copy and paste the numbers into Excel. With Firefox4, I can convert to pdf with Acrobat but I cannot access the numbers for copying and pasting as text, only as a picture. While I prefer Firefox, I check to see if this problem recently started with the "other" company's web browser and did not have this problem. So, it is not Acrobat.

Try triple-clicking in the text that you want to select--it can sometimes be tricky to select text in a converted document. If that doesn't work, it could be that the PDF document was created from a scanned document, and OCR wasn't enabled when you converted the document. (However, OCR is enabled by default when you convert via the ExportPDF website.)
If you're unable to select text by triple-clicking, let us know. I would be happy to take a closer look at your files.

Why does copy and paste always convert to arial 10 in firefox?

I use a web based email and auto responder system. In the past I have been able to create a document in word and then copy and paste the content into a template. The font and size, style and color would save in the document as they were in word. Now when I do the same thing, they are converted to arial 10 black.
why is that and why does firefox not support other fonts?

You can paste in any track you want, make sure the track is selected first before you paste.
Or Alt drag to any track without selecting the track first or even to a new track.

You know that you lost the layers when you saved it as a jpeg, right? But you're saying you can't add layers to the jpeg now when it's open in the editor? Go to Image>mode and be sure it's RGB, for starters. Are all the commands in the Layer menu grayed out?
