Copying Library from external HDD into Mac Pro

I have a copy of my iTunes 9 library (from an earlier Windows PC) on a USB HDD and want to copy the content into the library of my new Mac. Which folder shall I paste it into? Is this the one that shows up under preference > Advanced > Media Library?
If I replace that content with the one in my HDD, will it work in iTunes 10?
Thanks
Shan

I would troubleshoot or dump the LaCie in favor of something else.
LaCie have been trouble enough in the past with FW ports, power adapters, shorting of cables, running very slow when connected off PCIe SATA using USB/eSATA cases.
But you never say if this is a FW800 case, or what interface, that is so slow. Resetting FW ports is a troubleshooting trick designed just for LaCie cases. Along with swapping cables and power adapter.
I would give all your drives a shot of Alsoft Disk Warrior to insure that the directory and file system are okay. And look at the hardware test in DW output for spare blocks vanishing on the drive.
Using SATA drive, case, and controller of course should be fast and done in seconds, not minutes.

  • Copying folders from external hd to mac pro desktop very slow

    Hi everyone,
I have been experience very slow download times when copying folder from my Lacie 30GB External HD to the desktop of my Mac Pro. For instances, it took 19 minutes to down load a folder with 300MB of contents to my desktop. The Lacie is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" I ran Disk Utility on it and "the volume appears to be ok".
Any ideas on what is going down?
    Thanks...Stan

  • Itunes library on external hdd for mac and pc

I want to store my my iTunes library on an external hdd and use it with a Mac and a PC. All changes made on the Mac should be recognised on the PC and all changes made on the PC should although be recognised on the Mac - one library for both.
I already tried to store my library from my PC on an external HDD and then started iTunes on the Mac, pressing "alt". But I wasn't able to open the library. When I choose library.itl, the Mac just opens iTunes without opening my iTunes library.
Any ideas, how I can put all my music, videos and podcasts on the external and then use it on Mac and PC?
    Kind regards,
    Matthias

The only format drive that will work with both a Mac and a PC without you using additional drivers is an older format called FAT.  Disk Utility can create this.  Otherwise if you use Windows' NTFS you need something like NTFS3G or MacFuse, and if you use OSX's HFS format you will need MacDrive on Windows (others may also work for both PC and Mac -- those are just the ones I could remember).
Theoretically the Mac should have been able to read the .itl on the Windows NTFS drive but maybe since it found it could not write to it, it reverted to default.
Note, if anything happens to the FAT32 drive you will need to repair it using Windows.  I also assume you aren't usign this drive for huge files because FAT32 has a 4GB filesize limit.
You will have to completely erase the drive to partition and re-format it.

  • Install external drive into mac pro

I have stored my itunes library on an external hard drive and now that i have purchased a mac pro i would like to install the external hard drive into the mac pro and continue to use the drive for the library. The external drive is a deskstar in an enclosure that i can just slide it out of so i can install it in the mac pro. Will this work or is there a better way?

Turn off the option in the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences to copy the files to the iTunes music folder, and then drag the folder into the open iTunes window. This will not preserve playlists and other metadata.

  • ITunes won't load library from external HDD.

I'm a DJ in Miami. I have 1TB+ of music. I have it in my HDD that I've used for months with my Macbook Pro Retina. For some reason I opened iTunes a couple days ago before a gig & my HDD wasn't loaded to the library. I went into the preferences & chose my HDD again but when I click apply it just closes the window & nothing happens. My music & playlists won't show up. Everything is still on my HDD so I know that's not it. I even formatted my Macbook & installed a fresh copy of Mavericks hoping that would solve it but it won't work. I have a backup HDD as well but iTunes won't load it either.

I think if you are using iTunes in a semi-professional capacity you need to learn how it works:

You will normally only have one .itl file.  It is the library file, along with a smattering of support files and folders.  Most of your files are just media files but it's the .itl that gives it all structure.  The reason I can't answer your question is most people don't understand "library" has a specific meaning in iTunes.  It isn't just media, it's the whole lot working together.  Now some people split their library and keep the main files on the main drive, and media on the external.  Better is to keep it all together, either on internal or external.
You should have a .itl file somewhere.  Conceivably if your drive is corrupt or something weird happened then it might be gone.  That's what backups are for.  If nothing else you should have old copies of the library fro when you last upgraded iTunes.  Did you do a spotlight search?
If your library file is really gone then you will have to build it again:

  • Moved Library from external HDD to MyBook NAS...

Hello forum - I am both perplexed and frustrated.  I have moved my entire itunes library from one external drive to another network drive.  I re-pointed iTunes to it's appropriate library.itl file.  All music, movies, audiobook, etc. seem to appear.  Two things do not appear:
    1. The bulk of my artwork.  99% of my library has artwork which I manually embedded which is what I find strange as it seems that often that is the suggested fix when it is missing.  Any thoughts? Is there a way to have itunes re-scan a folder and re-populate?
    2. The "Shared Library" icon on the left hand side is also vanished.  It does appear that home Sharing is on - but no icon.
I'm using the latest version of itunes, OSX Mountain lion 10.8.2 on 15" MBPr 2.3GHz.
FWIW - originally library was on a WD MyBook external drive.  I transferred it to a WD MyBook Live Duo drive which is plugged into my airport extreme (latest model).
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Steve

    Ok - I may have resolved this (let you know in about 2 days...).  New question;
I did a library re-organization with iTunes.  The heirarchy of folders seems weird - is this normal or "ok"?
    On external drive:
There is content located in Music, Movies, etc. but there is alos content including Music, Movies, etc in the "iTunes Media Folder" - is that the way it i ssupposed to be? Seems like all music should be in one place - yes/no?
    Thanks - Steve

  • Moving iTunes library from external HD to MacBook Pro

Ok, so a while ago, my iTunes library had grown so large I was running out of space on my Mac, so I moved all the files to an external HD. Of course, I could only listen to my music (as well as sync my iPhone and iPod) with the external device plugged in.
Fast forward to today, and I've decided that I'd like to reverse this process, as it's far too big a pain in the rear to continue, not to mention the fact that I'm a little sick and tired of entire albums disappearing for no apparent reason.
That said, if I simply go to Files>Add to Library and click on the iTunes Music file on my external HD, will I end up with duplicates of all 2300 of my albums? This is what I'm dreading, as I have nightmarish visions of my sitting here all weekend deleting duplicate files.
Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but there it is...
    Danke schoen!

Did you move the whole library or just media (there is a big difference)?
    Whole library:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
    Just media:
Consolidate is how you move your iTunes media files to a new location.  Consolidate simply looks at everything you have in iTunes and copies them to the iTunes media folder location specified in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.

  • How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

My guess is that the encryption is the problem for the new app.

I think there might be information there on how to reset Time Machine to do a full backup. I think you basically have to reset it and start over.

  • Plugging firewire external hdd to mac to get library to pop up in itunes?

hiya, i was wondering if there's any way to have a firewire external hdd to mac to get library to pop up in itunes as a seperate entity? because I want to centralise all my music to the external hdd, or will it do it all on it's own? (haven't tried it yet, just copying now as we speak) :d
    15" Powerbook G4 1.67ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1.5gb ram, 80gb hdd, 8x dvd burner,

If I understand correctly, you want to move all your music to an external HD.
Before continuing copying, read this article:
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
Your music files can be stored anywhere, but the library files have to be in a fixed place and can not be moved:
What are the iTunes library files?
Always connect your ext. HD before running iTunes.

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

  • I can't paste text from external sources into Photoshop CC 2014.

    Hello everyone,
Since a few days I'm not able to paste texts from external sources into Photoshop CC 2014.
I never have problems with Photoshop CC before.
I have the new iOS Yosemite installed in my macbook.
It's really frustrating, can someone help please?

I have basically the same setup, except on a Mac Mini. I am unable to reproduce your problem. Double check that you are copying the original text in the first place, and then make sure you are pasting into a text layer as you cannot paste into a regular Photoshop layer -- nothing will happen. Create a text layer by clicking on a regular layer with the text tool, the T in the tool box. The new layer will show up in the layers panel identified by the first line of the text.

  • Is it OK to use USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive?

Is it OK to use a USB 2.0 connection for Glyph external drive and Mac Pro as project drive? I was told by Sweetwater tech support to use Firewire, but both the FW400 and FW800 connections crash my audio interface software mixer (Presonus' "Universal Control" software).
Both Firewire connections also create a 10 second hang for each Command-Save that I do.
USB 2.0 for the external drive seems to be working so far, but is there some reason I should be wary of using this as my go-to project drive? In other words, I am imagining that there was probably some definite reason that the tech support guy mentioned not to use it. But maybe not. It's a brand new Glyph. In any event, it's nice to have the 10 second hang eliminated, and I was just looking for some advice, since digging into the Presonus software issue could take some time.

If you have a mac pro, why not stick the external HDD inside via one of your many SATA cables & have it run 9 times faster than your USB?
Or stick a HDD CADDY in your mac pro, so you can slot in a full sized 3TB HDD for recording, and when you are done, pull it out & slip it in an external enclosure if you need to take it places?
